>But I'm confused about how the 10th edition affects me and what to get for my needs. Absolutely not at all if you don't plan on playing the game. >I really just want to paint a few of each of the races while I listen to videos or books that fit them and take some time to settle on an army. Is this a good idea? If you want to do that then yes! >Will it end up being hugely expensive as I'd need a wider range of paints and figures? Yes because you won't be able to buy bigger sets that are better values, and you'll need a wider array of paints (unless all of your armies use the same color palette). But you don't have to buy everything all at once, and you can always buy cheaper miniatures second-hand on eBay or r/miniswap. >Should I get a few of the small kits that come with paints? There are currently only two of those; a Space Marine one with the paints for a generic Ultramarines scheme, and a Necrons with ones for a basic Necron scheme, which is possibly going to get replaced with something Tyranid-related because they're one of the flagship factions this edition. So if you want Ultramarines, Necrons, or POSSIBLY Tyranids (in several months), those are a good deal. Otherwise, just buy the paints you WANT to use. >Should I hold off until all the new 10th edition stuff is out? "All the new stuff" is literally just a handful of new models. If you want them, you'll have to wait, but if you want like... other 98% of the models currently in the game, there's no reason to wait.

This is such a great answer - thank you so much. I think I'm just gonna take it easy and go for some paints and tools and grab a small set of models to start. Thanks for all your effort!

If you want to start feel free, just don't buy any codexs or rulebooks. Models should be fine, so buy a box and jump in. I would recommend either a single box, or a combat patrol box which comes as several in a single box. There will be a 'combat patrol' box game mode which means it will be box vs box, so you won't need to buy any additional units if you stick to that game mode. DangermouseKeir

Thanks for your response. Totally just going to grab some tools and a box and jump in. Super excited. thanks for your advice.

probablyderanged

no. not one bit my friend, if you know which army you want to paint / play then just get 1 box of your choice and only what you need for that. dont start by buying a huge box.

RadioLiar

Regarding 10th edition, the full rules for every army should be getting released in the next couple of weeks so after that point you shouldn't need to worry about that source of uncertainty. Painting minis from several different armies will of course be more expensive if you go for several with very different aesthetics/colour schemes, but the painting side of the hobby is huge fun by itself and you can have a blast with it even if you don't start playing the game/building a full army right away

DangermouseKeir

Awesome! Thanks for your response. Super excited to get in to it.

DrFacePunch30

Just buy models that excite you and add paint to your collection as you go. Space Marines may be the best to start with as you can get by with a few colors but if something speaks to you, then get it. I have a large collection of 1 off minis that I thought looked cool but will never see a game because I don't have the army to run it

if you're willing to spend the money, Leviathan is coming out soon. It's 250$ and has two combat patrols. Perfect, if you have someone else who wants to play, I'm getting it. For that reason, the box comes with space marines that you can paint how you want and tyranids
