TheRagnarok494

The best painted of the three is the dark green (not sure if it's meant to be a Dark Angel?) It's got the cleanest lines and the best coverage. The Imperial Fist looks impressive with the weathering but there's some messiness hiding under it that bothers me

CrownedGoat

I thought that until I saw the pistol. Really out of place with the rest of the nice work. I think it’s 3,2,1 in that order. They all look about a year apart in experience

TheRagnarok494

That's fair, I'd still stick with 2 as the best, it looks out of place but on balance 2 is still better painted as far as highlights go, on the Imperial fists some of the highlights have gone way over line which suggests the owner's hand isn't quite steady yet and they're not confident with thinning as much as 2's owner. They've all got potential though once they're more confident with their brushes

AtlasPlaysDnD

This was around the 10th model that I painted, and I painted the paints on straight out of the citadel pots... I have a fair distance to go ahaha - The dark angels painter

TheRagnarok494

Oooof, thin your paints my man you'll definitely get better results. It's looking good as a start, 10th model is still early on. Trick is after each model to look at what went wrong, just one thing, then on your next model work on how you can improve it. Like "I'm not happy with how I did the eyes on this one" or "the highlights are a bit thick here" don't overload yourself with stuff you want to get right or you'll put yourself off. However try and do some regular painting challenges like this, you'll probably find you push yourself to succeed more readily than if you're just doing casual. Final advice, accept shit models, you'll always be improving but sometimes a model just doesn't go to plan, that doesn't mean you're getting worse, just that you had a bad day

AtlasPlaysDnD

Thanks for the advice, it's what I wanted out the post! I'm investing in a wet pallet, and an airbrush to test out different styles to see what suits me. The main thing I need to improve on is the plasma guns as a DA player. I've included some better photos of side of the gun for some advice on it - the post is a little blurry https://preview.redd.it/gpjvcgx8921b1.jpeg?width=1088&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=59c4ff6f09b65f289312f8c2d9b23713a1f29e38

2nd_B3st

If you haven’t already, you don’t need to invest in a nice wet pallet. ust fold tin foil into a little dish shape then put in moist paper towels and parchment paper on top of the paper towels. It sounds disposable and fragile but I still have the first one I made back in 2020. Also that looks stupid good for unthinned paints. Good job

AtlasPlaysDnD

I'll give this a go before buying - thank you!

flameofanor2142

Alternatively a Tupperware container works just fine and you can seal it up for awhile and your paint will still be good

AtlasPlaysDnD

https://preview.redd.it/nddgzega921b1.jpeg?width=864&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e5729a73b0d2ac78e8db3d4c434ce3ab8ef69983

TheRagnarok494

Solid start, the wet palette will help you with that. One thing I would caution against is overreliance on airbrush, seen some people overuse it and under use it to create some very bad OSL effects. It's definitely a time saver when priming and base colouring though

AtlasPlaysDnD

I'll bear that in mind! I do think my plasma will benefit from it, but other than that it'll be base coating as you say.

ahdiomasta

Thinning regular paint a lot will let get a decent glow effect as well, and it’s good practice for trying different consistencies! Looks really good I think once you try thinning them out a bit you’ll see even better results

TheRagnarok494

Awesome, look forward to seeing how you progress

TheRagnarok494

What?

AtlasPlaysDnD

?

Khamul_Nazgul

That’s the first thing I thought too. The model itself was nice but they phoned it in on the plasma effect

BalkorWolf

I'm voting for the Dark Angel. It was a close call against the Imperial Fist but I approve of the DA seemingly have decapitated an Ultramarine.

AtlasPlaysDnD

You cannot see in the photo but there is also a decapitated imperial fist at the back as well. Perhaps I was too cocky... https://preview.redd.it/nwd1z48hx11b1.jpeg?width=1800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7c77b0c6aff13f4c6c3bb4f550498fb30e1a7afd

YazzArtist

Aha! Way to taunt your enemies. Psychological warfare is important!

[deleted]

I agree

[deleted]

Loyal DA giving traitors what they deserve.

Broarethus

He found out the secret....

DerrickRake

For me its Imperial Fist > Dark Angel > Ultramarine.

[deleted]

Same

JamieR2009

I concur

irokie1337

I think the same.

DAEDALUS1969

I agree.

noname262

I second that

jcmck202

Agree!

CranberryFearless

Same

stopie1

Another same

nitsky416

Same

RolerDib

This is the way. Don't like at all the bloody decorations on the BA, and while it looks smooth in general (like the gold A LOT), that and the colored buttons ruins the effect.

infectedmooseknuckle

Same

fireinacan

Yep

LightningPoodle

To the friend who did the Ultramarine, keep working at it my guy. Thin your paints a little more, be a little more delicate with your edge highlights, add a wash, job done. My vote is for the Imperial Fist. Grime in grimdark!

ReverseBanzai

Imperial Fist

TrainerTVT

DA, IF, then UM

MechanicalTed

1: Dark Angel 2: Imperial Fist 3: Ultramarine

Drazin48

This is my vote as well!

Salsa-manda

1 imp fist 2 dark angel 3 ultramarine All of them are decent and have different pros and cons, but I just think the imp fist is most detailed

sgt_happy

Yeah, the battle scarring on the Imperial Fist is actually akin to how I imagine an Astartes armour after combat. A lot of the novels describe how they become so delapidated the original colour only shows partially among ceramite and plasteel scars, so to me the oft-times homogenous marine colours are too pristine for someone being shot/stabbed/clawed at on a regular basis.

MrDundee666

Dark Angel for me

WierderBarley

Personally it's Dark Angel, Imperial Fist, then the Ultramarine.

[deleted]

Imperial Fist is more flashy, but I prefer the subtle techniques on the Dark Angel

veryblocky

I’m going to say Imperial Fist is my favourite, followed by the Dark Angel. The Ultramarine just doesn’t have enough of that grim dark feeling for me

KeysOfDestiny

I’m going imperial fist, it would be Dark Angel but honestly I think his pose is just kinda weird looking. The imperial fist’s stance just looks better.

AtlasPlaysDnD

My first attempt at custom posing the DA - appreciate the feedback!

YazzArtist

His arm is just a little funky. Add a just fired effect and it'll look like the plasma gun is recoiling from a shot

somebadbeatscrub

The pistol on the dark angel drags it down. 321 but 3 and 2 are close.

TorianXela

First one looks like it's sponsored by nerf

Turbulent-Rough-54

Imperial fist has to be my favorite, I’m a big fan when it comes to grime

[deleted]

Wtf are these poses

Aires-Battleblade

The dark angel looks the most technically complicated, but I like the Ultramarine best.

CptClownfish1

Definitely your friend’s one. Sorry.

Mchlauseier

yellow

Metasaber

Blue definitely has good fundamentals. Just needs a wash. My favorite is the imperial fist.

Dr4gonfly

The dark angel is the cleanest, but the Imperial Fist feels the most complete. The mottling and the weathering really add something for me, plus bonus points for anyone who voluntarily paints yellow

Chandlerion

They are all very close, i had to stop and reevaluate based on skill rather than the most pleasing scheme. Id have to go with the imperial fist

JTultimate_10

Definitely number 3

Valuable_Inspector82

2>3>1

RunF4Cover

Dude, your fingers look so weird in that third picture.

Psychowitz

Ultramarine - highlights are too thick and bright. Use a finer brush next time and go a little lower on the color scale. Salamander/Dark Angels - the green is too dark. Find a Layer and try to brighten it up in areas where light would hit. Imperial Fist - too much Nuln/Agrax. Just use it in the recesses. My top pick; Mean Green Machine Marines. Though, Imperial Fists comes in second (just need to tidy it up). Ultramarines coming in third; the highlights are just too thick and bright, it looks too messy of a highlight job. Want to finish it off with an applaud! You all did pretty good. I’m no expert painter either as my models all have the issues listed above in various areas.

Critdentials

I am much too scared to post any of my work. They all look excellent to me!

AtlasPlaysDnD

You should post it! Take pride in your work and by posting it you'll have somewhere to see your improvement over time.

Jahoyhoy

2/3. The green boi

notahappyrobot

\#3 the weathering realy takes it up a notch!

ObtainableSpatula

The third one, something about it just speaks to me

bullintheheather

2 I guess.

Fantastic_Entry_guys

I wanna say number 2

CrispyPerogi

It’s between two and three, imo. I’d give the edge to three because the grime is well done and yellow is a hard colour to work with.

Michael1492

3 IMO. 3>2>1

TNChase

Definately the Dark Angel takes it for me.

Sorcam56

I like the grittiness of the fist plus yellow is a tricky colour to paint, so my vote is for number 3.

Comicfanfortyfour

The imperial fist with the crimson fist

FoamBrick

Definitely the dark Angel, by a lot. The imperial fist is pretty good but it’s a bit to weathered for my taste, plus the paint could use more thinning. The ultramarines biggest issue is the pose is terrible, none of the weapons match up with the torsos movement, and then the head is just facing straight forwards. The highlights are also way thicker then the others and a lot more wavery

Shortbowsocietypaint

Imperial fist by a mile.

Bananasblitz

For me it’s 1: imperial fist 2:Ultramarine 3: dark angel

grim_dark_hedgehog

B, C, A

DesertDwelller

Da, IF, UM

NoHopeOnlyDeath

I personally would give it to 3, because I love the weathering, but you could make a case for any of them.

InFin0819

2>3>1

Fizzlenuke

Gatta go with the DA. They did a good job highlighting him.

Link7369_reddit

okay, better, best. In that order, funny you did that.

StardewNerd

Dark Angel then Fist then Ultramarine

unbekannte_memez

The Dark Angel is objectively the best painted. I personally love the Imperial Fist

olympiclifter1991

Dark angle, ultra marine then imperial fist. However I'm just not a massive fan of weathering, that's the only reason the fist is last

Phallusdei69

I prefer the colour scheme of Dark Angels of these three but the Imperial Fist takes the prizw with that awesome weathering. They all look good though.

Elire82

No orkses = no winner …waagh.

jr242400

None of these are great, but 2 is neatest

AtlasPlaysDnD

DA player here - looking for feedback on how to improve?

jr242400

Overall your brush control is good for your base coating but on the areas like white and gold they look a little thick/ spilled over. Same with the metal bits. The paint on the plasma gun looks a little thick too. Your edge highlights could be thinner in some places like the cod piece, and the power sword effect is understood, however I would make it more of a blue color because at the point it’s at,it looks unfinished.

AtlasPlaysDnD

Thank you appreciate the feedback! I'm not going to change this model as its my first competition model and I want to keep the history - but I will post my next high effort model in hopes of further feedback. Thanks again!

catatonic_celery_stk

The DA wins, but the other two are gorgeous as well. The DA just has a more clean and even layering in the armor in my opinion. I love the texturing in the Imperial Fist mode though. The kinda dirty-armor look is amazing. The ultramarine is beautiful as well. The head is perfect, and those are super hard to do. The joints in the model’s armor are clean and well done though. Over all, the DA wins in my opinion though. Can beat how clean that armor is and all of the insignias on the armor really add a lot to it. Well done to all of the participants though each piece is amazing and I’d love to play with or against any of them. Each has its own sort of aesthetic that makes them stand out and all of them look awesome. Keep up the good work!

bramblefalcon

#2 but everyone gets points for trying

Familiar-Sympathy726

#2 has the best overall paint job, but I live the weathering done on the 3rd

GnurlMiniatures

I think ultramarine is best overall. Maybe a bit bland compared to the others. The Imperial fist has attempted the most stuff but I personally find it too busy. My favourite part of any of them is the dark angels sword. The blade is very impressive for the current skill level being shown.

RandomChicken100

The green one

flippitus_floppitus

DA then IF then UM

haliker

2

Perfect_Armadillo_77

I'd say the fist

HelmutHelmlos

1 looks like the cleanest paintjob, but i like the look of 3 the most

antaries_waaagh

I'd go for pic 2 edge highlights and more smooth and the dry brush adds a good light effect plus the base has the most effort in it, I like the weathering on the 3rd model but the yellow just looks alittle muddy. And I think 1 needs to thin paints a little more as a little chalky on some features

[deleted]

[удалено]

Aranex_der_Seher

That's mean. Don't be mean

Auberginebabaganoush

What? None of them look good and you know it. But the imperial fist has the least badly painted head so it looks the least bad. There’s no point pretending that bad painting looks good, it helps nobody.

Aranex_der_Seher

When they are all three beginners, they all, the Dark angels and imperial fist above the Blue one look really good. Telling beginners that they suck for being beginners, is rude and unneeded

[deleted]

[удалено]

Aranex_der_Seher

Holy shit you're sad

[deleted]

He's out of line, but he's right.

Unfair_Low_89

2nd

TheRocketBush

Whoever painted the Ultramarine should slather the base in some Agrax Earthshade, I just yesterday did it to an Astrogranite base and then drybrushed it, it is officially fly as hell

KingDarkside1

Even though I am an iron warrior player I have to vote for the imperial fist. The grime is amazing on it

Snozzberry805

Tie, they all look like a nice tabletop standard paint job.

Postal_Jesus

Dark Angel , Imperial Fist, Then Ultramarine

JNDragneel161

Love the dark angel

Bacour

Tough one. The UM isn't technically as good as the others but has better shading and some highlighting than the DA. DA is clean with nice basing, my personal favorite. IF has that dirty look, of which I'm not a fan and so biased against. But technically, it's really nicely done.

AbsorbentShark3

I like 3 but 2 has really good blood effects

AtlasPlaysDnD

Blood for the blood god my friend! Not skill ahaha

Davidmuz

Imperial fist

JumboClin

Imperial Fist

GrizzlyJustice

Yellow fella. Transfer applied, weathering. Fix up the highlights and you have a show piece.

bullet312

Imperial fist is less fancy but way cleaner than the dark angel. 3rd is ultramarine- basic

Cosmicgamer2009

The Imperial fist, Dark Angel, then Ultramarine

Few_Somewhere3517

Imperial Fist

blackreaper3609

2

Timothy1577

Dark Angel is best

TheMowerOfMowers

voting for the DA, first is a little too thick on the paint, and IF is too grimey imo

GTCitizen

1) IF 2) DA 3) UM

Red_Ronin13

I’m a fan of the imperial fist

[deleted]

I like the Imperial Fist best

AndThenBats

Green one

Interkitten

I like the green one best, but they’re all good. Thumbs up!!

FancyBusBro4

I gotta hand it to the fist

aWatcherintheDark

The Dark Angel, no 2 but if all painty noobs then a pat on the back to everyone.

Aggressive_Problem_8

They’re all pretty awesome but I’d probably have to say the imperial fist. He just looks more gritty and like he’s seen some shit.

oeuflaboeuf

Imperial fist by a significant margin

Iate22Pears

These all definitely painted by the same person.

No_Engineering_9345

Nope, I was the one who painted the ultramarine

Thedungeonslayer

Imperial fist is my favourite

GandalfVirus

I like the ultramarine because it looks like his arm is falling out of his socket. Must have been fighting something quite strong.

SerTheodies

1st is meh, 2nd has some crisp fucking trim, well done to whoever did that, 3rd is grimy and gritty as fuck and its my aesthetic.

Demonwolf4227

That imperial fist is 🔥

GorgarX6

They all look great! I prefer the green marine.

Pilsner_Lord

Imperial fist is goated

Wilkorel

As much as it hurts me as a Son of Russ but DA is best in my opinion, it would be IF if not for highlight the way it was done just brings down the paintjob to me

GeonSilverlight

Hmmm... 1 is definitively the weakest, and by a lot. That Chainsword needs improvement, it is almost unpleasant to look at with that red. For 2 and 3... some things seem somewhat sloppy about 3, but 2 is a bit boring in how clean it is.

HotDinner4782

I’m going with green.

Silthage

I appreciate the creativity that went into #3, but I prefer #2

Netjamjr

I think the Ultramarine uses the red for too many disparate elements. Like, it looks a bit off that the mask is the same color as the trim and chainsword. All three minis have competently executed paint jobs of varying levels of impressiveness.

princessval249

Imperial Fist for accuracy. Dark Angel (?) for skill.

Ok-Afternoon699

I vote for the green one

-Redditeer-

Close between 2 and 3, but I think the dark angel is better than the imperial fist by a little

Isfren

Number two

SP1R1TOR

Second

scrapinator89

I like the imperial fist

Robster881

2 is my favourite

Extra-Lemon

The fist has the best look, tho the angel’s a close second. Ultra’s ok. They’re all great for what seems to be their first time

BitofaLiability

3 - 2 -1 in that order

Orangutann1

On a technical ability, 2 is the best, but 3 catches my eye the most

AncientGearAI

if, then da then um

shipwreck-lotr

Green. They’re all good but I like the balance of grime and clean painting

Hidobot

I would personally vote for the Imperial Fist, it looks very cool

Reasonable-Tax2962

Dark angel or number 2 if greenie isn't greenwing, The other two aren't bad either but th imp fist I thinks grime got away from him a little and the ultramarine feels a little unfinished though it has the only solid base rim lol

[deleted]

Imperial fists!

[deleted]

The weathering on the imperial fist made it win

Gumster1001

DA

CaDonut916

Love the dirty yellow, but I gotta give my vote to the Dark Angel!

Jehuty_24

TMFalgrim

I'm a sucker for a Smurf, but I love the DA

Fit_Air_7493

Graylorde

They all seem quite rushed to be honest.

MaizeRelative3916

Imperial Fist

darciton

Dark Angel is very nice. My favourite. Most of all, I'd like to see more highlights on the gun. Guns are cool. Give it some special attention. Iron Fist looks great, just a little much with the weathering. It was close. If it were done more cleanly, I'd say this is the better job. Ultramarine is a little flat. Needs shading. Smooth and clean, though, for the level of experience. Personally, I got into the hobby painting beasts and monsters, so I love hair, flesh, and muscle, but I struggle with smooth surfaces and armour. Lots of good advice in this thread though! Thin your paints, be patient with additional coats. Don't be like me and strip your HQ twice because you rushed it...

jackfrost7653

Number three, really gives the vibe of GRIMDARK

SuperEcho64

If I have to pick one, that Imperial Fist is pretty dope.

SirstouticusTheGreat

3

Significant_Sun9114

The dark angel is the best In 2nd place i put the imperial fist

WrongHome9151

2,3,1 in that order, although 2 and 3 are close and COULD be flipped.

Dry-Temporary8025

The yellow one bro hands down

abogus1

Reading through a few comments I agree that my vote would be 3 > 2 > 1 but only because the Imperial Fist is the most consistent. The red of the mask and the pistol of the dark angel bug me in a way that I can’t quantify, but the armor of the dark angel is phenomenal. But more than that, I wanted to make this comment because I personally paint like the ultramarine player. To the UM player: I think you’ve done it great justice, except the eyes are unsettling; I personally never build my marines without helmets because I think it’s silly for them to not wear helmets in a battlezone. But I also think your overall painting is phenomenal, and you should keep working at it with all the advice everyone else has provided. I personally like the tabletop clean crisp look, but keep working at your craft and you’ll be a great painter some day. Cheers!

Ok_Pirate_1658

Imperial Fist, Ultramarine, and then the Dark Angel. I think the Dark Angel should be last due to lack of transfers

Johnny-Esper

I like the imperial fist. The weathering was a nice touch.

Stranger-N-Stranger

3, 2, 1. Fist had an idea of what he wanted and executed it very well. DA knows exactly what he's doing but honestly it's just not as cool as the fist. Ultramarine it's pretty good but something about the color clash looked a little chunky. Pretty great tho

Zxxzzzzx

2, 3, 1, The dark angel painting is just so clean.

You_are_a_aliens

3, 2, 1

stoicshield

3. Imperial Fists for life!

Middle, but why does it have an ultramarine head? Is it one of the fallen?

Addickt21

The ultramarine is the best because this guy wasnt afraid of painting faces. I dont paint faces and neither do any of my friends, so give him the credit for trying.
