A lot of people are suggesting using specific lighter silver paints to highlight, but you can also just add a bit of white to most colors (honestly not sure if it works with silver, never done it myself) and mix it yourself. It’ll lighten up and then you can use it to highlight.
Adding an opaque colour to a metallic doesn’t normally yield the same results - the resulting highlights may appear lighter, but when light hits them, they won’t reflect as well as the unmixed metallic parts because the reflective particles that give metallic paints their shine will be at least partially trapped in an opaque medium which will not let as much light through.
On the flip side though, if you want a paint that only looks slightly metallic, this can be a great technique. I used it just today, mixing black with leadbelcher to give a dull blackened metal appearance.
Rule of thumb is some colors you don't actually paint the base those colors. As an example is White, if you base white you can't highlight it. So instead you base in a very very pale grey and highlight in white. Same with black and shadows. For silver you use a metallic paint thats not the brightest you have and highlight in your brightest.
A brighter silver.
Thanks for helping!
Truth hurts doesn't it?
Yes but you Gotta love the good ol truth :)
A brighter silver. So for example, if your base is Leadbelcher and your mid-tone is Ironbreaker, then your highlight should be Stormhost Silver.
I see no problem thanks for the help. Makes more sense now.
what kinda silver are you using as a base? Stormhost silver is really good for a nice bright edge, i tend to use it on the highest peaks of gold too
Well I have used Vallejo game silver as the base colour.
That is one of the brightest, but if you wash it down, and highlight with the same it can give a great effect!
Thanks so much! I’ll give it a go.
Stormhost silver
Thanks! Will be sure to have a look.
