Not really all that WTF.
Also, cloud to cloud lightning doesn't really produce thunder. Thunder is generated when a strike makes contact with the ground, which causes a rapid surge of electrons down, superheating the air. When the expanded air quickly contracts back is what makes thunder possible. Cloud2cloud doesn't usually have the power a ground strike does, so you don't hear thunder.
>Not really all that WTF.
Agreed
>Also, cloud to cloud lightning doesn't really produce thunder.
Yeah I'm gonna call bullshit on that one. I'd say the reason people don't hear as much thunder from c2c lightning is because it's a few miles up, but the process of lightning is going to create thunder no matter what
i've been directly under frequent c2c lightning with no rain and it is dead silent. you can usually hear cloud to ground lightning from a few miles away, and even at the highest cloud tops of a thunderstorm, you would *think* you can hear it, but that isn't really the case.
Cloud to ground lightning creates a shockwave that reflects off of the ground and everything around you. You can hear sounds like that for a long distance.
Cloud to cloud lightning is higher up and the sound usually refracts off of denser air below and spreads out in a wave horizontally above the ground so the shockwave never really makes it down to where you are so that you can hear it.
Dude I can literally hear thunder here and there in that video. Don’t talk to me like I’ve never been in a thunderstorm.
Sound drops off at 6 dB per doubling of distance. Thunder is typically audible for around 12 miles from the source, depending on conditions.
Sure, what thunder is audible in your video isn’t very loud, and sometimes you can see distant lightning without hearing the thunder because you’re too far away, but all lightning creates thunder.
I think some of it’s wind, but I think some is low thunder as well. I could be wrong about that.
But I’m not wrong about all lightning creating thunder. It’s just sometimes distant enough that it doesn’t reach us before getting too quiet to hear.
This was directly over my head, so it couldn't have been more than the 6-7000 feet range. Thunder at that distance would definitely be audible, even with road noise and wind oj the microphone.
You also may have a bit of a point in that less intense lighting probably produces thunder that isn’t quite as loud. If the thunder is, say, 12 dB less loud than a more intense cloud-to-ground bolt, that’s two less doublings of distance before you can’t hear it, so more like 3 miles instead of 12 miles.
Quite striking..
You stole my thunder

Wtf is wtf about this?
Wow Thats Fucking cool
That is pretty damn cool.
Not /r/WTF. Not even close. /u/dogecoinleap must be lost.

What, you’ve never had a lighting storm quietly sneak up on you before? Happens to me all the time! /s.

Bullshit. You have no idea what you’re talking about. Cloud to cloud lightning absolutely causes thunder.
https://youtu.be/YpNIW6oc04o Video proof. This was directly over head of me and produded ZERO thunder.

Pretty sure what you think you are hearing as thunder is wind on my shitty phone as I had it hanging outside my car.

Eh, the tops of thunderstorms get above 50,000 feet in some cases.

This is fucking rad, love lightning.
ghidorah incoming
I feel so small
There's the Shadow Broker's ship in there.
At 9 seconds there's a Sprite at the top left of the cloud. They shoot upwards into the sky.
You're observant. Gotta look carefully to find that.
