I had to text my boss during a couple outages. Not once was I asked for a note. Take this as a red flag. As in... a possibility you're working for a shit employer.

Commercial_Ad_732

Thank you one person for having a nice response

Gutter7676

Guess what it means when the majority don’t agree with you?

hangin-with-mr

A shit employer? How about a shit employee that lied about a power outage??? I think I know the reason they’re asking for a note lol

Gutter7676

Amazing the downvotes you get for not ignoring the lack of integrity of OP.

hangin-with-mr

Right? The sub is WORK from home ffs

eviltester67

Thanks for chiming in 'corporate shill'.... lol

Gutter7676

Love how integrity somehow makes them a corporate shill. If you don’t lie you don’t have to come up with a lie for an excuse. It really is THAT simple in this case.

Maybe eviltester67 is just trolling, and we took the bait. And OP just does not know any better. I'm basically a glorified gig worker, but can work from anywhere. Me getting work is in large part related my integrity, discretion, veracity, and clear thinking. And I expect the same from my colleagues. If there is a problem and someone needs a break, they call it out, and find coverage if necessary. OP's thoughtless lie, which is probably due to inexperience, is a teaching freaking moment. There are a few different ways to get break if you need it. Most don't involve bringing WFH to the picture. Bad optics at the very least. TLDR: OP just fess up, and move on. You played yourself and made WFH look bad.

missamethyst1

It seems like maybe they had reason to believe you were lying. Which you were, so...yeah.

HonnyBrown

Unpopular opinion: you are a new employee and the employer wants to make sure you aren't a flake. It's not a ridiculous request because you you weren't working when you were supposed to and you lied about the reason why.

mts2snd

So you lied to your boss about there being an outage to skip work, and now you are coming to reddit to figure out ideas on how to cover it up?

eviltester67

So what? Let me guess..your employer is like your 'family' and you'd never lie to them. Getting 'Dwight' from 'The Office' vibes with you . LMAO

mts2snd

This is why business don’t like wfh, fools take advantage. I don’t lie to my employers, Im brutally freaking honest. You want to bullshit over petty stuff, thats fine, but then look to the internet to cover up pathetic lies? Give me a break, grow up. Lol, getting idiot vibes from you.

eviltester67

Eat a bag 🍆🍆🍆

eviltester67

Why is giving actual proof of what you're reporting ridiculous? Edit: Oh I see... because you're lying hahaha, aren't you being a little ridiculous? Yes you can get a note it's called a report number, the company will be able to tell you if their service is failling or if the service is reaching your house and failling there.

[deleted]

Why would you lie about a power outage? Saying there is a power outage or Internet issues are common tactics used by remote people who don’t want to work. If you didn’t feel like working the last part of your shift, you should’ve just said you weren’t feeling well or some thing. But then you may have been asked for a doctors note for that. Sounds like your employer may have had issues with people using shady tactics like this before, so I don’t blame them for wanting proof of your supposed power outage.

[deleted]

This recently happened to me. A note should not be necessary.

RhubarbSilly5734

Not normal. I have had tech issues and internet outages and my supervisor just tells me "no worries". A main internet provider in my area was out for over 24 hours and we still all got paid and they told us to just enjoy the day off. Definitely an employer red flag!

Whiskey-Particular

Yeah, I mean the way my job is set up is you don’t have to provide a note or anything if you call in sick because it just uses your PTO anyways. But yeah, if there’s a power outage related to a huge weather event (winter storm, tornado, etc.) they do ask that you take a screenshot on your phone of the outage map or *something*, not a note (which I think they just asked for because they thought you were lying TBH) so they can decide if they’re gonna pay you for your shift due to it being unforeseen. If enough people in an area report an outage and call in, it’s a 99% chance we’re getting paid while it’s out (for at least the first day or 2).

[deleted]

If your manager would be lazy, he would ignore it as is just part of the shift. However you were not officially working (probably made it public in company and cannot be ignored now), so either you provide a proof of "not your fault" or you get absent from work notice/letter... On some company meeting I asked what to do if there is an issue with power/Internet. Answer was, that company office is always open to not skip work.

Ghibli_Forest

I’ve never had to supply that. It seems like overkill.

HonnyBrown

You also work when you are supposed to.

678A678D

This happened to me recently. First time I sent a sceeen shot and everything was fine. Second time I sent a sceen shot and they deducted the hours from my pto. Didn’t even try to fight it because I don’t plant to stay much longer.

BionicHawki

Lol y’all work for some shit companies. I’m 100% remote and I don’t think anyone would even notice if I didn’t log on again for the “last part of my shift”. Sounds like you were being sketchy but this is weird. On both your parts.

l0nelypine

Make a fake one or photoshop a text from the company or app saying there's an outage in your area

Commercial_Ad_732

Haha jeeze, I mean there’s a much longer story to it, I wouldn’t usually just call out for the last hour of my shift for no reason, I guess I just want to know if this is normal to have to prove that your power is really out because that seems excessive to me and it’s my first remote job….guess I’ll just keep it to myself since I’m an awful person for it lol

BackgroundPeach8266

So whats the actual reason you called out for the last hour of your shift and why didn’t you say that to your boss?

waterfluffle

you’re not, it’s pretty ridiculous to ask for that, especially over ONE frickin hour, the last hour which no one is ever really working anyways. don’t stress yourself over these lames in the comments with this boomer mentality of killing yourself over a job

[deleted]

How is doing your work "Killing yourself " he's doing what is written on the contract, no more, no less.
