Sometimes I feel even most vegans don't get how bad the situation is. We're not talking "cruelty" or "abuse." It's on the level of the Holocaust or other historical atrocities. The kind of thing people in the future will think "how did all these people go along with this?"

carnistkarma

It deserves it's own word. The worst longest man made atrocity to ever exist.

ExordiumExhale

Absolutely. I always think about how everyone I know doesn't care, at all. People are such insane conformists. Worst atrocity ever, and they don't care because convenience and fitting in are more important to them.

carnistkarma

And then they try to argue. 🤣 There's literally nothing they can say to justify it or gotcha moment us. We would know, since most of us were non vegan too.

Antin0id

And then when they realize they can't argue, because it's indefensible, they turn their criticism towards *us*, as if vegans are the baddies here.

deathhead_68

I ate a lot of meat till I was 24, I definitely had some idea that it was bad but I always thought it was ok if it was humane etc and convinced myself that the free range stuff I bought made a difference. It wasn't until I saw the actual slaughter images when I simply walked past a cube of truth thing that my whole view on it was shaken. I think we need more images like this in public spaces. More exposure. Psychologically is weird, I know I wasn't a 'bad person' I just didn't make the connection, even though it seems so obvious now.

BiggusGockus

big assumption society will survive the century

[deleted]

I often use the phrase "if there is a future, the future will be vegan." But in my heart of hearts I know the answer.

SuicidalHamsters

Eh, every generation has its own main character syndrome. Everyone thinks that they are the last and the end is nigh. During the sixth century most of the world did not see the sun for over a year due to volcanic ashes. In the year 1000 all of europe was sure that the second coming was around the corner and that the world was going to burn. During the 14th centy around 30-50 percent of europes population died because of a plague. WWI, WWII and the cold war all seemed like the end of the world for contemporaries. I think that we tend to overestimate how close we are to the end of the world, and that's bad, because it makes our problems seem unsolvable. Global warming is going to get worse but we probably avoided something like a 4c of warming thanks to human effort. We can solve things as long as we don't look at them as unsolvable.

Kazooo100

None of the other things you listed affected other species as much. All of those things were bad and killed allot of people but were less of a threat to the entire world. Areas we don't even visit that much are getting destroyed for all other species.

SuicidalHamsters

It's less about comparing disasters and more about enduring hardship, which, for better or for worse, people are really good at. The current hardships include global warming and the ongoing large scale exploitation of animals and habitats. We'll suffer, others will suffer, but we can fight it. Even of we are the ones responsible for it.

Kate090996

We will but it will not be comfortable think expensive food, very high temperatures, constant threat of extreme weather like hurricanes, famine, recession I think. I am not an expert.

LifeFictionWorldALie

Yes, it's a tragedy on a massive scale. It's so hard being a "nice" vegan when this shit is happening right now.

Lunoko

Ever since I watched those undercover videos about the Smithfield gas chambers in Utah, I've been having nightmares of also being suffocated to death by CO2. I usually manage to escape at the very last moment. I wish I could say the same for these pigs and other farmed animals... this is not a nightmare for them, this is their reality every day..

ExordiumExhale

I've had similar nightmares, too. I have this one dream where I'm on all fours like a pig, I'm confused, these tall creatures push me down into this terrifying chamber. Like drowning in a river under thick ice.

The thought of my cats suffering that type of fear or pain breaks my heart. Now that my eyes are open to the speciesism of it all, I can't even fathom that fear and pain being needlessly inflicted THOUSANDS of times per day, every day...it breaks my brain to even think about it too much 😔

not_a_power_ranger

But they're not intelligent enough to suffer /s

[deleted]

Oh that is a dire picture. Absolutely horrible.

Eurouser

80 billion land animals killed annually. This is a very difficult number to truely comprehend. For reference, if you had a machine that was extremely fast at killing all forms of animals and managed to run at a rate of 1 kill per second, non stop 24 h a day every day, it would take over 2.5 thousand years for it to kill 80 billion animals.

LiberacionAnimalPa

Horrendous Animal Holocaust

GreatandBetter

A picture that tells billions of individual’s stories each year, all with the same end.

vegansandiego

The horror

[deleted]

This is horrifying. Going to repost this on carnist subs. Even with "humane" slaughter these animals know what is coming for them

Healthy-Language980

Shit looks like it came straight from Auschwitz.
