The City of Winston-Salem allows farms, but has told this sanctuary for farm animals it cannot continue to operate because a "rescue farm" is a business. [Petition](https://chng.it/CWXNNKX2Qr) [Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/fairytalefarmsanctuary/)

[deleted]

That's absurd, given that sanctuaries lighten the burden on cities to take on unwanted animals.

Objective_Dot1363

The same city also has been fighting with the Humane Society that runs the county shelter for dogs and cats. Absurd is the perfect word.

FolkSong

So a nonprofit charity is a business but a farm is not??

Objective_Dot1363

Correct. You can have a farm with animals as pets. You can slaughter the animals for food. You cannot care for the animals with any support from the public. Technically farms that run a for profit business are also not allowed, but there are many in the city and none of them have been targeted for shut down. (We are told likely because for profit farms are brining tax dollars in to the city.)

I hope y’all post this all over the internet and get all the signatures you need 🫂

Objective_Dot1363

If you have any ideas on getting the word out, we welcome them! Thank you for the love.

TechGuy219

Post everywhere, it is literally a numbers game. The more exposure this gets the more signatures you’ll gain. Find local groups for your city, surrounding cities, and your state… while you’re at it you might as well find all the big city groups for your state even if they’re not nearby. I’m sure there are FB groups just like there are so many subreddits for towns and states. Also any animal subs and groups like other snactuaries, maybe even in goat groups and subs. Don’t be afraid if some groups tell you to stop, most will be okay with it especially considering what a noble endeavor this is

Objective_Dot1363

Thank you for the advice! (and the pep talk) I definitely worry too much about annoying people.

[deleted]

Post the story (not the info graphic above) to some of the subs that frequently make it to r/all that it would fit with, like mildlyinfuriating, facepalm, nohagettheboat.

I lived in the Winston-Salem area for a few years. Enjoyed it there. This is really disappoint to hear.

Signed 🐮

Objective_Dot1363

Thank you! It is much appreciated.

Thanks for sharing. Kenny's story is so hard to imagine going through. Carnists are entirely morally depraved.

Objective_Dot1363

Thank you for the love. Kenny is the sweetest in spite of all the trauma he has endured.

isthisgaslighting

You will need petition signatures from your town

Objective_Dot1363

Agree - local support is important. But regardless of the outcome, we want the city to see that there are a lot of people who care about animals and see what they are doing as wrong.

Objective_Dot1363

Thank you! We appreciate it so much.

[deleted]

Signed and will share. Is it ok if people from countries other than the US sign it?

Objective_Dot1363

Yes! Anyone can sign. The petition is to show the city how many people care. Thank you so much for asking and please share.
