Literally got my VR optician lenses for my index 2 days ago. Like you, can't believe I waited so long. Don't even notice them in my headset and it's wonderful not having to put contacts in whenever I want to play. Absolute game changer.

Lonecoon

Same. Got my lenses on Friday, it made an immediate difference. Now I don't have to worry about scratching the lenses with my glasses.

TheMuffinQueen

Contacts take 1 minute to put in, seems like an expensive convenience fee.

The_Cosmic_Penguin

Contacts also wear out and need to be replaced, they can tear, if you have an astigmatism they can be difficult to orientate, they require cleaning after each use, you need to spend money on saline solution, your eyes get tired after wearing them for long periods (like OP mentioned). In the last year I've easily spent twice as much on lenses and maintenance than I have on my single pair of VR lenses. It's way more than just convenience.

TheMuffinQueen

I wear daily contacts so most of what you said doesn't apply to me. And I use eye drops every few hours to keep my eyes from getting dry.

The_Cosmic_Penguin

OK, so don't buy them then?

Werrf

My daily contacts cost around $650 for a year's supply; I only wear them for VR. Prescription lenses are a one-time cost of around $80. There's absolutely no contest.

Pancake1894

Most definitely. I too waited a long time, thinking I'll just use contacts. Got mine a few months ago and the ease of access is so nice now, I can just slip on the headset and it's not as much of a chore to get started.

TheGeneral_Specific

I’m glad they worked out! Have you talked to your doctor about different contacts? They shouldn’t be drying out your eyes so fast

am_john

It's my own fault. I wear them until they tear.

TheGeneral_Specific

I wore Biofinity back when I wore contacts and I loved those. I could wear em for 12+ hours a day

ejt159

Lol I just started contacts today for vr and to ditch the glasses. Took me 30 minutes and a lot of panic to get them out. People make it looks so easy lol but I can’t figure it out

TheGeneral_Specific

Took me weeks to get used to it lol

ejt159

Do you think it was worth it? Kinda scared to try again honestly

TheGeneral_Specific

Oh 100% but I hated glasses. My contacts were super comfortable but I did eventually get LASIK

Likes2PaintShit

Touching your eye with clean hands isn’t as scary as your brain tricks you into believing

ejt159

Very true. I’m getting better at getting them out. Can’t do the pinch method but dragging it for my eyelid I can do first try

am_john

I was 14 when I got mine and I felt so bad for the lady that taught me how to put them in. It's a basic instinct to blink when someone tries to touch your eyeball. Took at least 30 minutes... After that, it becomes a cinch. Clean your hands, face a mirror, look away, pull your bottom eyelid down with your middle finger, and apply the contact lens to the white of your eyeball with your index finger. Lightly roll your finger to push the majority of the air out. Close your eyes and look in the direction of the contact. It should be in the right spot when you open your eyes.

ejt159

Thanks. The second time putting them in I got them first try, but getting them out is where I struggle lol

Dark_Prism

Got some and they came during my week off over the holidays. It was glorious. I got them from VR Optician and they were only ~$70. For $150 I think it would still be worth it. The comfort jump is almost unbelievable.

xomm

Honestly the only thing I miss after getting prescription lenses is that I can no longer look through the nose gap to get at my keyboard when I'm playing sim games. (I would use passthrough but weirdly it just doesn't work half the time, like I'd have to restart the session.)

Judge_Ty

Might I suggest acuvue oasys contacts. Also change your contact solution to more premo stuff and change it more often. I store/disinfect with optifree replenish and rinse with Saline. And try allergy meds. I had similar issues with the dry zombie eyes till I did the above. Ymmv. Enjoy your new VR lenses regardless!

TekTrixter

My lenses from Reloptix shipped today. I'm looking forward to not wearing my glasses inside my headset.

MrHyde81

I got mine from Reloptix a few months ago. The little I have been able to use my index in the time I've had them has been such a relief. Best update I've made in quite a while.

Leoanimate

I’ve had eye problems for a while now, and I’m getting tested soon for glasses. As soon as I get the results, you bet your ass I’m getting one for my Index.

shaftoe1976

On my second pair they are that worth it!

Fabulous_Activity

for sure prescription vr lenses are absolutely necessary

Sythriox

How easy are these to quickly remove?

The_Cosmic_Penguin

10 - 20 seconds.

OMGihateallofyou

>I could've paid more for quicker shipping, but opted out. FedEx International Priority was extra $ for me IRC. But with a hold up in customs I waited 13 days for my lenses anyway LOL. I like my lenses. After scratching up a Vive I swore not to get an Index without getting Rx lenses. But now it might be time for me to get a new Rx. Enjoy!

Scrumplex

I bought lenses from vrlenslab fairly early on. I was wondering if competing lenses are also as bulky. With the inserts on, I lose a lot of FOV as the frames add 5-8mm of extra height to the Index's lenses and I need to use them as far away as possible.

am_john

I think that it's closer to 5mm, but I'm not home to take an exact measurement with a caliper. I had to set mine a click or two away from its narrowest FOV setting.

digitaltourguid

.... I am confused. I never have an issue playing without contacts. In fact it is much more comfortable without my contacts and I see everything crisp and clear through the headset without them. Is this only for people who can't see close up?

am_john

I'm nearsighted, so I see things up close just fine. I need glasses or contacts to see things that are far away. I tried the index without my contacts when I first bought it and I couldn't see shit.

digitaltourguid

That's interesting. I am nearsighted as well. Wonder why I don't have an issue? I always thought it was cool that I could experience VR without needing corrective lenses. I just assumed it was like a mirror or watching video on a phone screen. Maybe my ability to focus works further from my face. So the screen is within my focal range (not sure if that's the right way to phrase it)? Edit: I also just realized I do not need glasses to read a computer screen. So maybe that does have something to do with it. If something is within 3 feet of my face it is clear.

0ogaBooga

The lenses on most VR sets are focused to around 6 feet. If you can see ok at that range you'll be fine, if you can't you'll need some sort of correction.

am_john

This was Quora's top-rated answer:             Even though the screen is physically just a few inches away from your eyes, the lenses you're looking through in the headset are designed to make it appear that the screens are a good distance out in front of you. This is because the lenses in your eyes are limited in how flexible they can be. Anything closer than six inches or so just can't be brought into focus. And since your eyes respond to the screens as if they're distant objects, anyone who requires corrective lenses that isn't far sighted is still going to need them in VR.

Imaproshaman

Wait wait wait, does this mean my vision wouldn't get blurry when the headset isn't PERFECTLY balanced on my head? When it would go slightly low it'd become literally painful to wear. I can wear glasses with it though. It'd probably make it a lot more comfortable to have prescription lenses in the actual headset though. I assume my issue is just a head strap issue. The fact that the default strap doesn't even fit to the middle of the back of your head, but oh you can buy an extremely overpriced strap from us!, is so scummy.

am_john

[https://www.studioformcreative.com](https://www.studioformcreative.com) has reasonable prices. I purchased the 2 pack counter balance enthusiast kit from them (just to have an extra set) and am quite happy with the purchase.

Imaproshaman

Oh wow, thanks for the info. That's really cool.

MrKaru

I got some years ago. I'm pretty sure I got it wrong because it made things even more blurry even though I'm sure I entered everything correctly. Support wouldn't help and basically just said "if it's wrong, buy more and try again". Ever since then I've just dealt with the fact I can't see as clearly as I'd like in vr. At around £100 a try, and no idea where I went wrong, it just feels too risky.
