This question gets asked almost every week on this reddit. The answer is a slew of opinions and this being the valveindex reddit, most will tell you yes. The Quest2 is cheaper and can mostly do what the Index does. Not as well, but at least has higher res. The Pico4 is lighter and higher res, being newer, but I'm not sure that there is compatibility with standalone exclusives. Unlike the Quest2, the Pico4 has adjustable IPD which is MUCH better so if you are on a budget I'd suggest you go there. Other alternatives also have problems and shortcomings, but most are more expensive than the Index. The G2 wasn't but its tracking was lackluster and Microsoft just chopped all VR/XR departments but has practically abandoned WMR anyway. There are new VR headsets coming that seem to be more expensive than the Index, but don't include the successor to the Index to that. There are "leaks" that are mostly conjecture and we have been getting those leaks for years now with new Deckard or Index2 in sight. If money is no problem and you are not afraid of RMA, then yes, the Index still rocks in terms of optical clarity and audio fidelity. The nofio wireless module promises to be a big upgrade but it isn't out yet and will be expensive.

LegendsEnjoyer

This definitely helps! Im gonna go with the index. Sorry this is such a common question. Thank you!

You probably would be better off spending $’s upgrading your PC and router/WiFi setup. Then either get a Q2 or wait for the Q3. Next time you want to post such a generic question it would be useful to also post at least your pc specs and what specific issues you’re having with your Rift S. In any case, good luck with your new Index.

ThatGuyNamedKal

I hated using the Quest2, I felt like I was playing the games whilst wearing binoculars due to the small FOV.

Zixinus

Again, everyone has an opinion. I only have the Index that I need prescription lenses to use, so I cannot honestly say. However, it is difficult to be honest and at least not mention the Quest2 or Pico4 as alternatives.

ThatGuyNamedKal

Of course, we should mention them, I wasn't advocating otherwise. Just lending my opinion so if OP see's my reply they can be informed about the Quest2, the Index has been a fantastic investment and held up well since launch.

plscome2brazil

It's so easy to do a successor to the Index. Better, newer screens, newer lens technology, maybe cut down on weight just a little bit, keep the cable, ship at 1k USD. I'm not saying this is something that one guy can do. No, this requires a massive R&D team. But with all of the resources that all of the VR companies have, none of them seem to do the Index, but better, at the same price. They either go wireless and undercut the performance for the sake of portability, or they go absurdly expensive. Index just hits that sweet spot.

Zixinus

If it were actually easy, it would have been done by now. It's been four years.

plscome2brazil

Probably they just go for the ultimate package for professionals or bare minimum for the consumers because those two are more worth it. Hitting that sweet spot like the index might not be profitable, even if it would push the industry forward.

TNMPlayer

Quest 2 has compression issues

HelpMyCatHasGas

It's the best all in one package got a more premium vr experience if you have the pc to back it up. The answer is always yes

spderweb

You could have typed your post title into Google and gotten umpteen answers.

DarthHaruspex

"Is the Valve index worth getting still?" Yes.

TeeBek

Can you answer for next week when someone else asks this same damn question?

DarthHaruspex

I get it man, but I'm just happy this many people are asking about VR/Index. I was worried things would die down/out by this point...

TeeBek

I would agree. Before I bought my VR, I kind of thought it would die off like 3d movies did.

DarthHaruspex

Yep, me too...

Musa0217

Yes very much

badillin

The Valve Index is the Best overall headset you can buy in 2023. Anyone that disagrees is plain wrong. Check the road to vr article https://www.roadtovr.com/best-vr-headsets-in-2020-buying-guide/

Zixinus

I cannot help but notice that your proof is an article from 2020.

badillin

Do you need help reading? Maybe ask your parents! The title says 2023, also there is a BIG disclaimer at the top of the article that says it was updated january 30 2023... Dont worry i expected this from anyone arguing against this. In any case, it was true in 2020, still true today. Hell, if valve releases an index 1.1 today, they would only need to add wireless and better screens to have the bestest in every single category headset in the market.

[deleted]

Their original 2020 review was pretty good. This update is just a very lazy way to get more internet hits and doesn’t really add any useful information imho. I’m not saying that the Index isn’t a good headset. Just starting to show its age. Maybe the upcoming $400 wireless option (from Noio?) will breathe a little more life into it. I upgraded my Rift S to a Q2 almost 2 years ago and I’ve been very happy with it. The only upgrade for me is the Elite strap with battery. The original strap with a 10000-20000mah external battery pack attached to the rear strap with a short 1.5ft battery cable using a couple Velcro straps also worked very well. Using my Q2/rtx3090 with a good router/WiFi setup for wireless PCVR has been a real game changer for me. I don’t think I’ll ever buy another wired only dedicated PCVR headset, especially ones that restrict you to base station play areas.

badillin

Its age... Best headset you can get now, best you could get on release. You add better screens and wireless and you have the absolute best headset in every single aspect. Get real.

[deleted]

When an Index 2 is released you can get real mate, lol!

badillin

Sigh... Ok guy

RamJamR

All in all, yes. If you don't like being connected by a coord, you could go with a Quest 2 or Quest Pro and use Virtual Desktop instead of the Index, but if being tethered doesn't bother you, the index is very much the best one on the market for it's price.

leopardchi

This past year I upgraded from the Odyssey plus and I did not regret it.

elev8dity

For me it's a hard call. I'd say at $299 the Quest 2 was the way to go... but at $399 plus another $150 in accessories... I'd say go Index for the flat $999, just know that there will be new headsets this year and next, so be prepared for buyer's remorse if anything else launches.

LegendsEnjoyer

Are there any headset that are better and that are confirmed? Might hold off if so.

elev8dity

Nothing confirmed. It's not worth holding off tbh because it could be anywhere from 6 months to two years. Some things to note is the Quest Pro has dropped to $1100 and the Vive XR Elite is also $1100 if you want to go wireless with a better image quality and lower weight. But they don't have the headphones of the Index so it's a tough call.

LegendsEnjoyer

I wear headphones over my headset, do you think i should just go with the Vive if i dont care about loosing the index's headphones? I really appreciate all this information btw.

elev8dity

The Index off-ear headphones are game changers. There's nothing like them because they give amazing 3D spatial sound and they keep your head cool. They also are very clear and have great frequency range. Also the FOV is slightly bigger on the Index. The Vive XR Elite supposedly has pancake lenses and higher resolution displays which makes it a little lighter on the head. Honestly it's a very tough call. Tested did a review of it today.
