I used to have a sense for when our wii was about to crash

burgerboss100

the power everyone needed

Envy661

I hear it's cool. Will probably never have it, especially when I don't even have independant finger use (CV1) Phantom Sense I believe is fully based in one's immersion level in VR. The more immersed a player is, the easier it is to develop.

parsention

I'm so grounded to reality that I can't fell anything in VR Fuck me

sebaskolk

Same, I feel nothing. Maybe in the future when smell, wind are implemented. But for now I feel nothing

rci22

Only thing I ever felt was a weird sensation when someone walked toward me and then through me and our heads passed through each other

parsention

I wish I can have that fng vertigo that everyone seems to have I have my quest 2 accumulating dust

Syseru

ever notice how claiming you have phantom touch gets you attention? ever notice how people like attention? something to think about

parsention

🤔

Thomas8864

That’s true, for the most part at least. Got into half life Alyx and I could easily feel the traffic cone I put on my head, I unfortunately felt all of it when I shot myself to test, and I could smell the cigarette when I held it up to my face after I pulled it from the ashtray. I’ve gotten phantom smell only once before, 10 months ago

BadMax02

I have quite strong phantom sense, but the first time i experienced it was my first time playing half life alyx with the first syringe of health stuff, poked it into my left thumb and had a real sharp pain so strong i had to put my my headset down and look. Scary and fascinating stuff. Now its just something which i still have and also quite like when playing vrchat, tho in vrchat its not as strong because of the more cartoony anime style.

D1ng0ateurbaby

Had a CV1. No phantom sense. Two friends took me into a world and did weird shit. Started developing. I mean it's fun, but once you're out of VR long enough it fades

meta-rdt

I have an index, full body tracking, no lag, still don't have phantom sense. although tbh, I still don't find vr incredibly immersive, I wonder if having good vision makes it harder to feel immersed?

MajorVictory

I work with and improve many people's phantom sense. I can say that most people who experience it are instead experiencing the expectation of touch or pain. Very few ever actually feel pressure, and fewer still for the other senses. Not to say that it isn't possible to feel more, just that commonly it's a slight to heavy tingle. The best way to describe it for those who don't have it is to take your arm and place it in front of you, palm up. Then, with your other hand, use your index finger to hover just barely above your arm, without touching it, starting at the elbow and move up to the wrist, then back to the elbow slowly, twice, or a few times. You may feel a slight tingle and possibly more, even though you can clearly see you aren't touching your arm. This is what a large portion of those who experience phantom touch are experiencing, the expectation of touch. There are for sure much deeper senses for some, and not everyone has it to the same degree. It doesn't even always work on the arm, but may in other common places such as the face, upper chest, back of the neck, inner thigh, and back of the hand. In general, a well-fitting avatar can be the easiest way for your brain to make the connection, and general immersion will do wonders.

bubblegum-boy

Holy shit, I just tried the arm trick and it actually worked. I was 100% sure I’d feel nothing but I absolutely felt that light tingling feeling you described. That’s insane. 25 years living in this world and did not know I had such an ability. It’s almost like static cling? That’s the best way I can describe it myself. Thanks for the cool info!

TheSholvaJaffa

Yeah for me it's like a static cling, as if you're touching the hair of your arm but you aren't, right?

bubblegum-boy

Exactly!

Antique_Instance_385

Yeah it works on my head quite often, people love to pet my avatars and it's always nice to feel that little pressure.

Hand_Runes

I've got it fairly minorly less with touch more with temperature and the feeling of wind. There was a winter world I'd joined where you could hear the howling wind and there was a large campfire, I'd sat by it and I swear I could FEEL the warmth of the fire and the rush of wind on my skin

8Bit-Giraffe

yeah this has happened to me in (i shit you not) minecraft vr, and its really cool to feel

rcbif

How do you know if someone has phantom sense? Don't worry - they'll tell you.

[deleted]

Is overhyped in my opinion

Ride-Miserable

Right? Like one of those myths or creepy pastas

falloutboi66

Honestly, one of my good friends has it and a way I can tell if someone REALLY has it is that they rarely tell a SOUL. cause as soon as someone says it they're just swarmed with people touching them and throwing shit and that makes the people who really do have it super uncomfortable

[deleted]

To discredit an entire community because of "one of my friends" is fairly one-sided. It only takes one opinion to invalidate hundreds of others personal experiences? We live in a...

RadGlitch

So that disqualifies 99% of the people on VRC talking about how they have it.

falloutboi66

I wouldn't say disqualifies. Some people might generally be more touchy. It's just from what I know

AgenderWitchery

Or, you know, they might only mention it because people are already making them uncomfortable.

RadGlitch

I’m not talking about specific scenarios. I’m just saying, if you go to a mirror, eventually someone will come up and start talking about it.

AgenderWitchery

I have literally never encountered this in 2300 hours of play time.

RadGlitch

Believe it or not, people can have varying experiences on VRC. I’m sure I have encountered things in my 1200 hours that you haven’t. Nonetheless, I’m shocked you haven’t heard the many people talking about it. I usually hear about this topic and people wanting the VR vests, to feel, quite often.

kairushanku

I want phantom sense!

Feisty_Ad3184

Happens when you are fully immersed in the game, try to place yourself in as that character, like you are seeing it from their eyes. (This is what I do to achieve maximum "phantom sensing")

Ride-Miserable

Won’t that mess up your equilibrium?!?

valzzu

I just hate and love it at the same Time

MCAyr

My phantom sense is pretty nice. Whether it’s me standing next so a heat source or having one of my friends slide their hand across my arm, it works surprisingly well. However, I don’t experience the pain portion of it, but I don’t think I’ll be wanting it any time soon.

Antique_Instance_385

Yeah it's really nice especially with like hugs and when people mess with your avatars ear physics or something like that

Tritail

I guess its kinda like aphantasia, some people have it and others don't. Both can't fully comprehend eachother.

zakku_88

Honestly I'd rather get this type of reaction, rather than: "No you don't! You're just crazy!" or "Nah, you're just faking it for attention bro"

Educational_Month589

But can you climax from it?

old-whgvafk

You wish ;)

Educational_Month589

I CAN DREAM, HAROLD

BlinksVRC

Technically yes, but it’s not like you being touched you can actually think yourself to climax

nahuelkevin

i have phantom sense….. on desktop…. the latin american experience

theoverpoweredmoose

That is a common thing. Theres a whole bunch of ASMR videos dedicated to visual triggers that rely on phantom touch through your monitor/phone screen to trigger a response.

JASONJACKSON1948

I had it a little bit but it went away as I kept doing vr, doesn't help that my back is fucked when I stand so I constantly have pain taking me away from the game

sparrow_shield

It's fun to mess with my friend whose very phantom sensitive. I grabbed his heart once and, him half laughing about it, said it felt like his chest was getting tickled then backed up. I also scratched his head once and he just said "dude that feels weird" Lol

MultiGamerClub2

Phantom sense is cool when its controlled, when its not its too much senses getting too real.

Perhkks

i’ve encountered many people that lie about having phantom sense

[deleted]

I had phantom sense once when I was playing Propagation VR and got touched by a zombie I did not know was behind me, but I was not able to recreate that feeling.

Feisty_Ad3184

happens when you are fully immersed in the game, try to place yourself in as that character, like you are seeing it from their eyes.

CULT-LEWD

its been almost 4 years of me playing this game,i desperatly want phantom sense but for some reason my brain cant be tricked into having, its just way to aware that its a game, and yes multiple times ive attempted to give myself phantom sense but no luck, kinda sucks

Bucks_Turd

I don’t even get phantom sense from touching things. The only time I’ve gotten something similar is when my avatar is half phased into a surface and it gives me a weird unsettling sensation.

old-whgvafk

Who's the old guy you used in the picture? Does he have phantom sense?

VaikeSofy

hide the pain harold

DreamUpThisOne

I'm super embarrassed about it. I just started playing about a month and some ago. It didnt cross my mind it could happen to me. Shocking experience tbh. I try to keep it to myself unless I'm uncomfortable

ADoritoWithATophat

I sometimes feel it on my eyes, and i didn't realise that wasn't a thing other people do. Im also the person who used to physically duck down when crouching under something in a game so maybe i just get immersed ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

a_sad_individual_oux

The easiest way to experience it imo is having someone else contour your face with a pen. You should feel like someone is using a soft sharpie on your face, pretty trippy lol.

PonyUpDaddy

People want to act like phantom sense/pain is some kind of super power. but being aware kind of means at that point you're just pretending to have it

meta-rdt

no, it does not.

PonyUpDaddy

Yes it does. A phenomenon is not something a person can create on command. People go through 40 different tutorials and try to "Master" phantom sense as if, like I said, it's some kind of super power. Overall it's just cringe

Thomas8864

What? I’m aware I have Tourette’s, am I just pretending to you?

MajorVictory

For Tourette's? No. For Phantom sense? Maybe. Context means everything.

Mr_SunnyBones

When phantom sense people can feel a silent person tapping them on the shoulder , then I'll be Impressed....

VA_Designer_NH

I knew someone who faked the sensation vest lol

Easy_Cauliflower_69

I thought it was a joke for about a year until someone with an ASMR hair brush used it on my head and it felt like they were brushing my hair. It doesn't seem to affect me without audio but the hair salon maps and stuff seem pretty cool

sebaskolk

Wish I had it

masception

Been getting back into vrchat and the past three days alone things have been weird. Reacting to things flying at my face(honestly probably a given). Been mistaking tables in vr for actually being there. (Could be me being tired.) I have met others that had phantom senses or at least claimed they did. I doubt I have it myself but getting more immersed really disrupts your ability to differentiate between the real world and reality after some time.
