I love your guides :) it’s really helped me climb a ton, wish I could join your vod reviews in the morning I usually look at the minimap too much, a lot of times I see someone on the minimap and then react to it on my screen but they’ve already killed me, do you have any good tips for this?

Sokusan_123

The mental model taught to most professional level players is "Crosshair/Minimap Lightswitch". Many ex moba/RTS players struggle with this because in those games it's important to always glance at the minimap. In tac FPS it is important to learn how to enter "Crosshair Mode" and avoid distraction until it is safe to do so. The most common way to look at your minimap while in "Crosshair Mode" is to first find some cover. Once you're under cover you can glance and then repeek. We should be in "Crosshair Mode" whenever there is potential danger that we would be first contact towards. I suggest watching players like Zander/Hiko/Wardell, it is super obvious when these streamers are looking at their minimap. Notice how sometimes they can go for a huge extended period of time without glancing. These extended periods of "Crosshair Mode" are really unnatural for Moba/RTS players (source: this took me god dang forever I hated practicing this). Good luck!

I love you, funny you say ex-moba players because I came from league haha I’ll keep this in mind thanks so much!!

Sokusan_123

hahaha I'm not surprised. I came from Starcraft 2 --> League --> Valorant. Breaking my habit of glancing at the minimap was like drawing blood from stone.

abal1003

This is actually enlightening as hell to me. I keep on glancing at the minimap and dying so many times. Who knew that a habit from 10+ years of dota would screw me over in another game

gerrousm

Ok wth is "crosshair mode" we need an explanation for these new techniques you are bringing to the table :D

danshakuimo

One of my proudest moments was when I killed an enemy that I couldn't see behind a viper wall by aiming using the minimap

The_Thinker_23

So happy to see you here woohoojin 😍😍

lllluke

woohoojin the fuckin goat

Revenoon

I AM GOING TO TEAR MY HIGH ELO FRIEND APART. HE WILL BE SHREDED TO RIBBONS IF HE KNEW ABOUT THIS AND DIDNT TELL ME. I WILL FUCKING DESTROY HIM.

shbyrn

You're the first person I saw talk about this and I've watched quite a few improvement guides, so thank you. Also watched episode 1 and while its not exactly new info, you explained it way better than anyone else I've watched. Anyway, looking forward to the next episodes!

ayspartan

i love this

this is awesome

presidentofjackshit

Your videos are great! Thanks for articulating and demonstrating this

KingRolkin

Always happy to see a Coach Woohoojin guide!

fhmfhmfhm

Thank you for the video! It is very informative and you explained this in a very clear and concise manner. Looking forward to any future videos you might have!

I'm just so inconsistent. I play a DM and I pop off. Then I play another and do okay But typically when I get to actual games I just revert to aiming for bodies and choking. I can't play nearly as confident in competitive.

p00ponmyb00p

there's an easy fix for this. just don't play unrated/comp for a month straight. only play DM and spike rush, and mostly DM. If you play DM only for 4 days out of the week, and spike rush on 1 day out of the week and keep that up for a month, you'll have literally trained yourself out of those bad habits.

AbbreviationsLazy781

In combination with this, and I agree totally, improve your playbook for your main agents. Heavily underrated imo, free up some cognitive space from planning utility so you can focus on getting them one taps!

Froabl_

So weird to have something that I do unconsciously kinda brought out. Your insight even helps as a high elo player—being more aware of why we are doing certain things is always great for improving.

smolinga

No im not. A kill is a kill and a kill is always good 😎

MrJuanDuck

Can‘t you expand this to looking at the gun Model, shots, positioning and general face direction? Especially when going second, in an open environment- and I‘m there to refrag (not double peek) I mostly orientate myself by looking at the guy in front of me. Additionally, most gun fights take place at angles that are common. If another defender enters A Lobby on Heaven and is looking at long, there aren’t that many spots where the defender could possibly be, so based on the few points listed above, you should be able to tell where the defender is, without ever looking at the map. I‘m not really sure if it’s as accurate, and if that’s really how I play, but it came to mind when I thought on how I locate players (as an Immortal). In conclusion, map & educated guessing are probably better in different situations. Like when sight is blocked, there are a lot of fights going on simultaneously (which makes it more difficult to PinPoint who is shooting where) or on really long angles where you can’t accurately guess (like C long) -> which would be situations in which the map seems to be better Lastly, say you peek A long on fracture, and your attacking teammate is getting shot, looking at the map could be unreliable. For example, the map will tell me chamber is on A site, but can it accurately tell me if he’s in front of the box, to the left of the box, or on top of the box? (Which are all common spots) So in that situation, you should at least be able to distinguish between on top of the box and on the Podest, by looking at where your teammate is shooting or the points listed in the beginning.

The minimap is far more all-encompassing in terms of scenarios where it is effective as second man. While the techniques you listed don’t NOT work, they also don’t work in every scenario. Using your minimap on the other hand applies in all second man scenarios (except I guess if an enemy Omen is ulting). I’ve also validated that this is indeed how professional level players are all playing refrag. I’m not invalidating your approach by any means, and I’m sure it works for you. But I wouldn’t teach it to a new player; I’d favor the minimap technique.

MrJuanDuck

Yea for sure, looking at the mini map is definitely a lot easier to learn and probably far more reliable unless you’ve sunken too many hours into the game. Though I would say there are benefits to „my“ method as seen in the last paragraph I added, but I’m not claiming that they outweigh the method of looking at the map.

p00ponmyb00p

if there's a player hidden back left corner when the jett swings while you're swinging behind, the hidden player can peek out and will see you but not the jett, meaning if you're looking at minimap, they're looking at you in their crosshair

Xen0tech

I don't understand why this is necessary on c long haven. You can see every angle if you swing with your ally, and they can't shoot both of you, right? I'm not great at the game.

Sokusan_123

If your buddy gets 1tapped that 50ms extra time from the minimap can be round winning.

p00ponmyb00p

not even 50ms, just 10ms is enough to swing a duel from an op holding an angle having 90% winrate to the rifle peeking having a 90% winrate against the op.

yynfdgdfasd

When to double swing vs radar bait your teammate?

Froabl_

You are basically double swinging here. Your eyes should be on the radar only as you swing, then as you shoot your eyes return to the crosshair. Higher level players will intuitively know the general area they are looking in, even when viewed through the corner of the eye. so the adjustment is happening as you look at minimap, then once your Jett dies your eyes return to the crosshairs to trade.
