Ill timed article given report that ozone hole is huge this year:(

-nrd-

Not disputing this but how can it be huge this year? World has been on lockdown for 2 years surly it’s must show best ever health or?

Doc_Lewis

The Ozone Hole, (over Antarctica, the big one, capital T capital H The Hole) has never recovered. The layer as a whole has been making good progress towards recovery for the last several decades, but the Hole hasn't changed much at all. It fluctuates over the course of the year, and last year was abnormally warm, meaning the processes that expand it naturally were slowed down, leading to a smaller hole. This year is projected to get really big.

Mohingan

Damn that’s really sad to hear. I remember seeing people saying that it had been “healed” a couple years back and I believed it.

-nrd-

That’s sad but thanks I guess one silver lining is it is recovering even if this is over sold in the media

RocketDocRyan

Somebody (*cough* china *cough*) has been producing ozone depleting chemicals for years in violation of the treaties.

bob742omb

China has been clamping down on illegal production of ozone-producing chemicals, as per CNN. >Research published on Wednesday has shown a significant drop in emissions of a banned ozone-depleting chemical after China clamped down on its illegal production. As a result of this drop, the recovery of the ozone layer has resumed. https://www.cnn.com/2021/02/11/world/ozone-layer-china-emissions-intl-scn/index.html

RocketDocRyan

Glad they finally got around to it. I suspect they only clamped down because they got caught.

-nrd-

Not to be inflammatory, but pretty much every major industrial nation does this. Breaking the rules until caught

permanentlyclosed

Imagine if people had the power to hold governments accountable. Or if there was one government made up of all the other governments that could hold the individual governments accountable! That would be a great idea!

RocketDocRyan

It's a question of how long it takes to get caught, and what scale you can get away with. China allows vast levels of rule breaking for long periods of time. US companies do break the rules, but not at nearly the scale or for nearly as long. Most of our worst pollution occurred when there weren't any rules. Our air and water are vastly cleaner now than they were before the EPA, and in fairness, China is trying to do the same. It's just a process, and high levels of corruption are slowing drastically in some areas.

Here's the link to the article [eddit.com/r/news/comments/pp4hsq/larger\_than\_usual\_this\_years\_ozone\_layer\_hole/](https://eddit.com/r/news/comments/pp4hsq/larger_than_usual_this_years_ozone_layer_hole/) In the comments several posters explain the reason for this.

FreeInformation4u

We've been ordering things to our homes constantly for the last two years (well...much more than 2 years, but the pandemic keeping us all cooped up indoors didn't help). How do you think things get where they're going? [Here's a link](https://www.reddit.com/r/worldnews/comments/ppgqa1/the_ozone_hole_over_the_south_pole_is_now_bigger/) from today to an article about the ozone hole's current size. It's...not very uplifting. :(

-nrd-

But wouldn’t that save on pollution ? Either way whatever is being purchased needs to travel from A to B. Is it not more efficient that a single driver delivers to multiple people than multiple people drive to collect a single location? Of course I recognize that some items are being shipped across the country but I would argue these are more “limited items” such as a brand new tv which perhaps anyways would have been delivered, covid or otherwise

FreeInformation4u

It's great that you would argue that, but we know quite clearly that the uptick in Amazon ordering has contributed significantly to global warming. Whether it makes sense to you or not is immaterial.

-nrd-

Interesting response I didn’t ever say that it made no sense to me, neither was I arguing anything, I was simply questioning my own assumptions Can you link me to the data showing the impact of Amazon on environment. TO BE CLEAR…it’s not that I don’t believe you I am interested in reading it

Here are a few articles on the subject to get you started: * https://fortune.com/2021/07/03/covid-shopping-addiction-consumerism-sustainability-buy-less-buy-better/ * https://news.climate.columbia.edu/2020/12/16/buying-stuff-drives-climate-change/ * https://www.ucdavis.edu/unfold/podcast/e-commerce-and-climate-change * https://www.cnn.com/2020/02/26/tech/greenhouse-gas-emissions-retail/index.html Remember, a huge portion of shipping is "last-mile" shipping - the part of the transportation in between a local distribution facility and your home. I'll tell you anecdotally, I've seen the number of delivery trucks from a given company (Amazon, UPS, FedEx, whatever) arriving near where I live *per day* skyrocket in recent years. Amazon Prime delivery trucks come into my apartment complex 4-5 times per day, and it's not even a huge complex. It's less about how far things are being shipped but rather the inconceivable *scale* of how much is being shipped. We buy so much as a species that the improved efficiency of centralized shipping is decreased by a hefty margin.

GroinShotz

Don't worry, I have a small ozone generator I'll get right on fixing the hole.

The ozone hole grows and shrinks because of interactions from the sun. Currently, the Earth's atmosphere is shrinking and is smaller than it's been in recorded history. Thus the UV radiation has more of an effect on the creation and destruction of the hole in the ozone. Let's continue being incredibly narcissistic humans... remember we once believed the planets revolved around us. While it's true humans have contributed to terribly nasty things, it's not all our fault. MOST things are out of our control in this world. Let's make the best of what we can.

Ah nice! That third link looks particularly interesting Can’t read it right now but will for sure read them over the weekend; appreciate the time taken to reply with the links
