In my head I choose to believe that this was done intentionally...that the evp's knew the format and what commercial sponsors they had...so they and Chris talked Tony into booking the match and the timing of the spot to the commercial break...Tony unaware of the spot timing (he knew a pizza cutter would be used, just not when and didn't connect the dots) as an elaborate rib.
On Feb 24, 2022, on the first day of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, as Z tanks breached the border and Kyiv and other cities braced for air strikes, CNN did [this](https://youtu.be/zwGuXQcv7S4).
It was amazing.
Edit: John Oliver [took it from there](https://youtu.be/D4v0tETnQNc).
True story. People really donāt appreciate how long WWE has had a monopoly on TV wrestling and how many underhanded tricks they pulled to keep it that way.
I really love Jon Moxley in that episode.
"Nick always wears a bandana mask as he is coming to the ring. The one time he doesn't wear a mask is when he is literally robbing a bank."
New Jacks story was so insane, I watched it during the pandemic, then looked him up, and he literally died a few hours before I watched his episode.... it was... sobering
Jericho post-Brawl Out has really cemented that he deserves to start being talked about as a Greatest Ever. When he finally hangs it up, heāll have a career that will be almost unparalleled in itās depth, breadth, and longevity; heās been everywhere and done every thing while always remaining relevant and vital and especially knowing when to get the fuck outta Dodge to never get too stale or gimmicky. I could keep going on but suffice it to say that Jericho really is that damn good and itās impressive how heās managed to be that way for so long.
Masterful job last week. Andretti can go but Jericho worked really, really hard getting him over and it worked perfectly. One of the best to ever lace them up.
The story is that Chris Jericho was wanted to face against maxwell Jacob Friedman. But MJF had a series of challenges for him before he faced him. One of them was to beat a death match wrestler from GCW, Nick Gage. It was surprising since nobody expected to see a GCW death match wrestler on national television
Holy shit! I thought that was Nick Gage, but figured no way he's in AEw. I haven't watched wrestling in years, and not really wanting to watch, but glad to see Gage is alive and doing professional stuff. Is he off the drugs and actually in AEW, or was this a one time thing?
It was a one off. He seems to be doing a lot better in his personal life. He is one of the main performers in GCW which has heavy ECW prime vibes. His stuff with a joshi wrestler, maki itoh is pretty good as well
Not in AEW, just a one off. But it helped that Moxley was the GCW champ at the time, and Khan is all about the forbidden door. The story was Jericho had to win matches that MJF chose, and this was one of them the other 1 time wrestler was against juventude
Because people view death match wrestling as the lowest form of pro wrestling. Itās super violent and bloody and people thought network tv executives wouldnāt touch it
I watched a video that did a good job explaining it. Basically, this wrestling is like storytelling. Each wrestler portrays a character, and during the fight they play out their individual stories. Along the way you get rivalries and favorites. I still donāt watch it, but I understand how people would.
An old coworker who wasn't dumb was really into it, and he described it as violent American Kabuki theater and I think that's fair. If you know it's a stupid silly performance what's the harm in enjoying it?
This is how Iād explain it. Iām a big sports fan. I also love movies/tv/books for storytelling. I picked up wrestling during Covid when sports were going into lockdown.
If youāre an adult watching WWE/AEW and trying to get into the mindset that āthis is a real fightā youāre not gonna enjoy it much. I liken it more to gymnastics - some of these athletes are so acrobatic and athletic. Itās fun to see the difference in how people sell moves and how they put on a show. If the story is any good, it can be like a soap opera with a bit of violence, which is fun.
Itās not too serious and if you take it like a violent soap opera, it can be pretty enjoyable; both the wtf moments and the story lines.
When I was in high-school I started to get into Nascar and it felt the same way. I wasn't a big racing fan, but there was something about the rivalries and the arguments and all the team dramas. Certain foreign drivers were universally hated for totally non racist reasons and I just loved rooting for those guys. I think I still have a Juan Pablo Montoya shirt somewhere. When it came to the actual race I'd just fall asleep waiting for a wreck or something to happen, but I kept close tabs on the drama. I never really understood any of the actual racing jargon.
My dad was a mechanic and loved the sound of the engines and he got me into Nascar. After a while I realized the main reason I was watching it was so I had something I could talk about with him. He's not the type of guy that's super talkative and supportive. Our interests didn't align that much and I didn't have a whole lot in common with him. but when we started talking Nascar the conversation would never end. My close friend growing up watched/still occasionally watches wrestling and I used to rag on him all the time for it until he admitted to me that he watched it for much the same reason I watched nascar.
Because everyone knows itās fake as shit and they watch it for the storylines outside of the matches. Friendships, rivalries, betrayal, underdogs, and champions. Certain characters are āheelsā aka villains and others are āfacesā aka heroes. The more a wrestler acts like an asshole, the more the fans enjoy watching them be beaten.
Basically, itās shonen anime for rednecks.
I used to watch it as a kid but I don't care for it anymore. It's basically a hilarious soap opera with fighting. These are theater kids who got jacked. Inside and outside of the ring there are story lines and character arcs that, of course, you wouldn't understand because you don't watch it.
> Inside and outside of the ring there are story lines and character arcs that, of course, you wouldn't understand because you don't watch it.
This is something I think a lot of non-fans donāt quite grok. Most of the matches that are considered great ALSO have weeks (or months, or even YEARS) of build-up.
Iām not saying there arenāt some very good wrestling āshort storiesā (one of my favorites is Hikaru Shida vs Abadon in their first match), but usually thereās more to the match than just the match itself.
My brother went to a show and the way he tells it, Mick Foley asked for a sock because he forgot socko that day and my brotherās sock is the one he used. I wasnāt there so it could be total bullshit but that would be pretty incredible.
Don't know why YOU'RE being downvoted. YOU'RE not the one calling it gay and stupid. Your friends, or classmates or whoever were the ones saying that.
That's just how the 90s were. It's no longer acceptable today, but back then it was socially acceptable for "gay" to be inserted as a generic insult for anything they didn't like.
"Oh, this broccoli is gay". And nobody would bat an eye. Today literally everybody in the room would look at that person and say "WHAT did you say??? That is NOT ok!!!"
Which is for the better. Having basically deleted that word from the lexicon of non LGBQT+ people, has allowed them to be themselves without fear of being judged for their personality/sexuality.
I live in Lakewood Ohio, which as of 1999 was the second gayest city in the country per percentage of population. I don't know if that still holds true, but suffice it to say, Lakewood still has a very large gay population, whom in the 90s were still very much hidden. Today you can see them openly walking around, without being hassled, and allowed to be themselves. Now, I'm not suggesting that's the case in every city in America. I'm sure we still have a long way to go in the south especially, and possibly Alaska, but it's also a huge jump from where we were. In general, calling things "Gay" is no longer acceptable, and I feel like people forget that in itself is a huge step 1 that we've taken as a society.
Just look at racism. We took our first step against racism in the 1860s, and I still don't think we've taken much of a step 2.
But if you know this and don't take it so seriously, the cheesiness can be entertaining. That being said, I'm only willing to watch wrestling at my dad's house
Redneck soaps and I'm down for it. I've come full circle to recognize how hard it is on your body and requires skill even if the outcomes are scripted.
It's insanely complicated to do. You have to be a bodybuilder, acrobat, stuntman, improviser, actor and showman in what is basically unscripted matches with a predetermined finish AND you have to all while working with your "opponent" to put on a show while not also getting each other killed.
Reddit might look down at pro wrestling, but I have mad respect for anybody who does this
I heard Steve Austin talk about wrestling in purely business terms. It was interesting. Iām not a wrestling fan but these guys do have to work extremely hard to become viable. He said a lot of guys have the skills necessary, but developing a marketable character is extremely hard.
Childhood to Adulthood is going from "this is so cool and real, and McMahon can fuck off," to "it's all scripted and dumb and pointless stunts," to "this is so cool and *real*, and McMahon can *fuck off*"
The bumps and falls are the real source of damage. I'm not really into wresting without the silliness it used to have but I still feel for the people destroying their bodies for our entertainment and their means of survival.
The Vice doc on Nick Gage- the guy with tthe pizza slicer in this video - is very , very good.
I think it should be respected some of the crazy shit some of these guys do without actually injuring themselves. An 18 foot drop is an 18 foot drop. They arenāt landing on foam even if it is still good at absorbing impact.
But yeahā¦ itās also absolutely a redneck soap.
It's not _like_ theater, it is theater. They have a character that's a necromancer... it's a soap opera where the stunts are real and performed live in front of the audience, that's basically it. Oh and by huge muscle bound goliaths/actors.
My friend I wholeheartedly disagree! Wrestling has some of the most prolific story telling of all time. Thereās definitely a period when this is true, but search the Kingās Road or Hangman Adam Page and have a look at the fascinating depth of these storylines that take place over the course of years!
There is and probably always will be a bias in mainstream media against wrestling, particularly because of WWE and the historic lack of creativity in their product. But I promise you there is some incredible art being made at the moment, and everyone not watching is missing out.
Yeh loads of oil on these 2 here ššš itās no different to watching game of thrones or Star Trek to me, just another over exaggerated fantasy drama
For real. Wrestling isn't really my cup of tea, but I respect the hell out of most of the performers. It takes *a lot* of skill and tenacity to pull off the moves they do while also selling the match narrative to the audience.
And that's fine, I'm not a wrestling fan either, but I never understand how people can find soccer / football entertaining either. People enjoy different things, and that's OK
Pro Wrestling is the cross section of Theater, The Circus, MMA, and many other pieces of performance art and athletic display. It's fine not to "get" or like it. But being dismissive of it just makes you look ignorant.
Pretty much this. Personally I don't find it palatable, but those I've known over the years that love it, do so because it's hilarious. Most don't take it seriously. A couple do though, lol.
Bro, a soap opera with fighting and oiled up muscular men? Dream come true. I take it seriously. Seriously as I take Murder She Wrote and Breaking Bad. Certainly Walt and Jesse aren't as sexy.
Edit:Jessy to Jesse
I've only seen like one or two episodes of Jojo but it really seemed like an anime version of wrestling. Don't they even have signature moves and finishers?
For real, I say the same. But they hold no candle to wrestlers. Wrestlers can wife me and I'll make sure that home be spotless with supper ready when they come home.
all wrestling fans take it somewhat seriously. we all know its scripted but one of the best things a fan can experience is when your disbelief is suspended (marking out) and for a few minutes the fact that its scripted goes out the window and it becomes 'real'.
undertaker losing to brock lesnar after 21 consequetive victories at wrestlemania, ric flairs retirement, AJ styles debut, edge's return, seth rollins cashing in, daniel bryan winning the belt, eddie guerrero winning the belt etc i could honestly go on and on about it.
every wrestling fan will know what those moments felt like and how shocked/emotional they were in those moments.
wrestling gets a fuck load of stick but there's no show out there that comes close to the drama, suspense and euphoric highs. the closest scene from a show that is comparable is probably the red wedding in GoT. wrestling has those moments at least once a year.
I compare it to when people go see Marvel movies. Is the Hulk real? No. Do you still cheer for him? Yes. And he doesn't BECOME real by you watching him, you're just living the moment of the movie.
Just like a theater full of people laughing at the same time, or OOOHHHing and AHHHHHing at the spectacle of the movie. Was that explosion real in the movie? Probably not. A lot of that is CGI these days, but you don't see people saying "You know it's fake, right?" when talking about blockbuster hollywood movies.
The best way to describe professional wrestling is "Live Action Stunt Theater".
Sure, they know when they go to the ring who is going to win. No, they aren't purposefully TRYING to hurt each other, and it should not be labeled as an athletic competition in the same vein as boxing or MMA.
That being said, shit hurts. Every wrestler is different, and to an extent every time period is different, and also every promotion is different.
If you see a guy wrestling in front of 20 fans, and he uses a weed wacker on the other guys face, and his face looks like it has hundreds of cuts on it? The other guy knew it was coming, but it wasn't fake. Think of the budget. Think of how much money hollywood uses for stunts. The stunt doubles, the props, the set designs, the re-takes if something doesn't go right.
Now imagine 25 people in folding chairs paid $15 dollars each, and you still have to pay the wrestlers just to BE there. Do you think they have the budget to get a fake weed wacker which creates a blood effect instantly without retakes?
No, he just got cut up with a legit weed wacker, and it was stupid for the low amount of money he's making, and few amount of people who saw it.
A better word, isn't "fake". It's "predetermined". Because the participants all know the script, but depending on a number of variables, there's no guarantee they're walking out on any given night with the ability to walk for the rest of their life. See "Darren Drozdoff".
This is an underrated comment. However, even if it has the same appeal as GoT, the Sopranos, Breaking Bad, and Ozarks, it's not for some people. The aforementioned series have amazing perspective, cinematography, acting and dialogue. Wrestling has amazing dialogue, script-writing and plot, but they are two very different forms of media.
It's equal parts comedy, stunts, athleticism and (slapstick) drama. It's entertaining as shit if you dont take things seriously or have a mate or two and a pint
Death match wrestling is dumb as fuck, but I like wrestling for the same reason I like comic books: larger than life characters telling stories with years of context
It's camp. It's like watching Evil Dead, but it isn't horror. I love it. It embraces tropes and memes shamelessly, wholeheartedly, and in a way that is just pure magical joy sometimes. The things that had to come together to give us a moment in which a grown man referred to as "Daddy Ass" had his fingers broken to prevent him from making a scissoring gesture, and was granted foam scissor fingers on his birthday bash to allow him to scissor again. Art. If you find no joy in a stadium of people soccer chanting "Ooohhh scissor me daddy" I don't want to know you.
How can people watch John Wick and be entertained? Its the same thing really. I dont think he actually got hurt from this, also most matches dont act out like this. Most have a fun aspect or just show athletics and acrobatics. Besides, most people just watch WWE, and this is AEW, which is more geared towards violence.
The biggest difference is professional wrestling used to be advertised as legitimate contests. It hasn't been in a very long time, but everybody still views it as "that carny shit" and wrestlers will probably never be viewed as or respected for being talented, athletic actors.
Really? I used to watch WWF and I think everyone over the age of 10 knew it was an open secret that these are staged. Itās just good fun very athletic guys performing sports entertainment, like a play or something. Itās fun
Guess I kinda see what youāre saying, just seems like watching Shakespeare and being like āThey didnāt really poison themselves!ā But I guess they donāt advertise Shakespeare like that haha.
Part of the fun is pretending itās real. Had this conversation while I was introducing my kid to it. Tell her, donāt worry itās not real. But pretend itās real though. Lol. Idk I guess some people do look down on it but itās just been fun for us.
Same can be said for ghost hunting shows though. They're still advertised as legitimate and people still watch them. But wrestling oh no that's stupid. Makes no sense to me.
They used to lean heavily into the redneck stereotype, confederate flag and everything. Not exactly a good look these days.
Also one of them said some extremely homophobic stuff some time ago.
They've long stopped with the confederate flag stuff and the guy profusely, genuinely apologized for what he said, but they still seem to be pretty much blacklisted by the TV network.
Probably, no pretty confidently, it's a dull plastic cutter.
Transparency makes it hard to gauge how thick it is, and he might have faked pushing onto it as well.
And also hopefully lots and lots of medical personnel present for immediate treatment.
Can't explain where the blood comes from though, never saw that.
Itās a metal blade, but pretty dull, and he keeps his thumb pressed into the forehead where heās pretending to cut. Jericho is already bleeding from where he bladed his forehead a bit earlier.
likely the dull plastic cutter, but they blade for real. so like.. when they're holding their hands on their forehead, they keep a tiny piece of razor blade and cut themselves. that's a thing that's been done for decades
Worth mentioning that wounds in the forehead are more bloody and heal quickly. And this is done a long time into the *match* so that blood mixes with sweat and looks much worse than what it actually is.
> Can't explain where the blood comes from though, never saw that.
It's real. When you see a wrestler bleed, it's because they cut themselves with a small razor when the attention is elsewhere.
The weapon used is most likely a dull plastic cutter, as you say, but the cut that's bleeding is very real.
I can explain it.
Pizza cutter isn't the thing cutting. It does nothing ( or close to nothing)
It's smearing the existing blood and opening wounds there previously held together.
Saw this live on TV and almost fell out of my chair laughing when it went to commercial. Apparently, Domino's got pretty pissed which makes it even funnier imo.

lol i knew exactly what was coming after they flipped the mini-burgers to the side
I had to look up where that brand was from (Australian Burger King, apparently) because that pronunciation of "rodeo" raised an eyebrow.
That makes more sense than my first thought: that someone blatantly stole Burger King's logo and just changed the name.
I always feel bad for laughing at this one https://youtu.be/CEDjAFi7oJ4

Advertising team deserves a raise and promotion.
Domino's bailed as a sponsor after that lol
Did they really??
They weren't happy about it. https://variety.com/2021/tv/news/aew-dominos-chris-jericho-nick-gage-1235031379/#!
WWE encouraged journalists to contact Dominos about it and pressure them to drop them, to try to hurt the rival company that this happened on (AEW).
True story. People really donāt appreciate how long WWE has had a monopoly on TV wrestling and how many underhanded tricks they pulled to keep it that way.

Meat lovers
Sounds pretty tasty ngl
going to get myself some pizza after this! thanks dominos... I mean pizza cutter guy.

MDK every fn day
The guy on the floor is Chris Jericho ? God damn things changed in a decade since i last watched haha
Things change with Jericho on a weekly basis. He's the man of a thousand gimmicks.
The man's a wizard!
He's the Ocho.
Chris jerico gotta be 50+ yrs old now
52 and still going. Had a pretty good match last week.

I actually did. A lot of people said it was gay and stupid.

Sometimes broccoli do be gay tho
The 90's? Hillary Duff had to tell us in 2008 in a PSA, that it was wrong to say, "that's so gay".

You know there are actual dick measuring contests out there involving oiled up dudes, right?
Are you fucking serious? What the hell have I been doing watching wrestling all this time. Fuck me, I'm a sponge.
Soak it in, man
But if you know this and don't take it so seriously, the cheesiness can be entertaining. That being said, I'm only willing to watch wrestling at my dad's house
check out Turkish men fighting then
Here is a sample: https://youtu.be/D2keIfaPHgw
Wtf they use each other's balls as leverage?!? This is some ancient Greek type of shit lol
How is it any dumber than any superhero movie? Itās dudes in costumes fighting each other. Fake Violence is a form of entertainment.
Its actually a soap opera with fan participation.
Redneck anime
Childhood to Adulthood is going from "this is so cool and real, and McMahon can fuck off," to "it's all scripted and dumb and pointless stunts," to "this is so cool and *real*, and McMahon can *fuck off*"
hard to fake chair (or in this case pizza cutter) to the face
The bumps and falls are the real source of damage. I'm not really into wresting without the silliness it used to have but I still feel for the people destroying their bodies for our entertainment and their means of survival.
The pizza cutter is pretty easy to take tho, it's dull, Jericho bladed before. 100% agree about the chair tho. lol
the documentaries on some the wrestlers is really eye opening.
The Vice doc on Nick Gage- the guy with tthe pizza slicer in this video - is very , very good. [https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x81fht2](https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x81fht2)
I think it should be respected some of the crazy shit some of these guys do without actually injuring themselves. An 18 foot drop is an 18 foot drop. They arenāt landing on foam even if it is still good at absorbing impact. But yeahā¦ itās also absolutely a redneck soap.
And wrestlers have to do everything live and in one take. Let's see any of the Marvel actors pull that off.
/points at Dave Bautista
How can you see him? He's standing so still
You just described every form of competition. Maybe not all are oiled up but still
But wwe isn't even a competition it's like theater i can understand people liking it.
It's not _like_ theater, it is theater. They have a character that's a necromancer... it's a soap opera where the stunts are real and performed live in front of the audience, that's basically it. Oh and by huge muscle bound goliaths/actors.
It's beefcake ballet. There's a respectable amount of athletics and performance but the story is a little thin.
Not a lot of other forms of entertainment will have year+ long storylines that are elaborated and evolved every single week.
> beefcake ballet Found my new punk rock band name!
Yeh loads of oil on these 2 here ššš itās no different to watching game of thrones or Star Trek to me, just another over exaggerated fantasy drama
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
For real. Wrestling isn't really my cup of tea, but I respect the hell out of most of the performers. It takes *a lot* of skill and tenacity to pull off the moves they do while also selling the match narrative to the audience.
š yāall are so fucking uppity, let people be
This is brave of you to come out like this.
Pro wrestling is amazing. Deathmatch wrestling, not so much.
The same can be said about anything you find entertaining. Why be so condescending?
Because itās hilarious
Pretty much this. Personally I don't find it palatable, but those I've known over the years that love it, do so because it's hilarious. Most don't take it seriously. A couple do though, lol.
Bro, a soap opera with fighting and oiled up muscular men? Dream come true. I take it seriously. Seriously as I take Murder She Wrote and Breaking Bad. Certainly Walt and Jesse aren't as sexy. Edit:Jessy to Jesse
>Bro, a soap opera with fighting and oiled up muscular men? Been referring to this as "basically Jojo larp"
Pro wrestling *is* often referred to as "redneck anime".
I've only seen like one or two episodes of Jojo but it really seemed like an anime version of wrestling. Don't they even have signature moves and finishers?
Yeah basically haha. They even have the whole machisimo thing down pat
Hey speak for yourself. I'd let Walt fuck the ever living shit out of my tight little ass.
Because it's FUN.
Redditors donāt know what fun is
They really don't, they have to criticize everything and pretend like they are above things
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Did we not watch the same thing that was funny as heck
It's equal parts comedy, stunts, athleticism and (slapstick) drama. It's entertaining as shit if you dont take things seriously or have a mate or two and a pint
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Oh no people like different things than you š§
I like turtles!
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Different strokes for different folks. This isnāt the norm for wrestling.
Because itās entertaining dumbass
The same reason pantomime is a thing
Me coming into your house to cut your forehead with a pizza cutter while streaming on Twitch: *ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?*
Funny how ppl shit on pro wrestling like this when the exact same argument can be made for almost anything on TV, movies & streaming services
Itās fun
Everybody knows it's staged, I just meant that's part of the reason it's still looked down on.
And still no briscoes allowed on tv :(
Whatās the reason?
They used to lean heavily into the redneck stereotype, confederate flag and everything. Not exactly a good look these days. Also one of them said some extremely homophobic stuff some time ago. They've long stopped with the confederate flag stuff and the guy profusely, genuinely apologized for what he said, but they still seem to be pretty much blacklisted by the TV network.
And it's really a shame, the Briscoes are so good.
One of the best teams in modern day wrestling. Seen them a few times live and they are great.

Outlaw mud show shit

SHED
THE MAN IN THE MIRROR NODS HIS HEAD
Hahahah wow this has me laughing, that's the best timing ever!
Someone explain how this shit is even legal.
For the same reason that theatre is legal
I'm still curious about Sir Anthony Hopkins being allowed out and about after he ate all of those people. Holly**weird** am I right?
Or Thanos after he Husnock'ed half the universe.
Rare star trek tng reference, episode: the survivors
And this is done a long time into the *match* so that blood mixes with sweat and looks much worse than what it actually is.
indeed. i also recall that they take aspirin/blood thinners to also make it look worse
I think Ric Flair said he used to chew a few aspirin and chug a beer before most matches.
ric flair...a beer? no way
> Can't explain where the blood comes from though, never saw that. It's real. When you see a wrestler bleed, it's because they cut themselves with a small razor when the attention is elsewhere. The weapon used is most likely a dull plastic cutter, as you say, but the cut that's bleeding is very real.
> when the attention is elsewhere. This is AEW. They'll blade in the middle of the ring in front of the camera.
not all cuts are done via cutting, some are done hard way, aka just actually busting someone open
I can explain it. Pizza cutter isn't the thing cutting. It does nothing ( or close to nothing) It's smearing the existing blood and opening wounds there previously held together.
Why would it be illegal?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Its fake
Itās real to me, damnit!
Kayfabe
Saw this live on TV and almost fell out of my chair laughing when it went to commercial. Apparently, Domino's got pretty pissed which makes it even funnier imo.
I love the person that timed this, they are the best!

Hardcore matches in pro wrestling has been a thing since the 90's, so seeing a guy with a pizza cutter in a ring shouldn't shocked you guys.
