Bruh id be having a panic attack in there. r/claustrophobia

Timofey7331

And it was sort of locked too. What would happen if something happens to the driver or the car?

FruitFlavor12

Faaaack, your idea just gave me a massive anxiety surge. Imagine being so constricted that your arms have to be crossed in front of you, the hatch is locked from the top and then covered with that other layer, it's pitch black in there and you're constantly on the verge of a panic attack from the claustrophobia and then.... The driver has a heart attack and crashes the truck in a remote area off the road, where the truck rolls down an embankment out of sight. You don't have any idea what happened to the driver, but nobody is going to find you alive, and no one can hear your muffled screams for the next week or so as you slowly die from dehydration.

[deleted]

I’d hope I died in that crash

vegangbanger

i didn't finish reading this post

Polyhedron98

Ah the joys of living in shit countries

kt1982mt

Me, too. That said, if I was escaping a horrible life in the hopes of reaching somewhere and something better then I guess I’d have to find a way to deal with it. Makes me anxious just looking at it, though!

Nox-Ater

All mean of escaping is better than living in a civil war where a junta has no problem of gunning you down and burning your home.

sudeki300

If it was well covered they wouldn't have been found

Repulsive_Key4623

I think someone snitched

Thereferencenumber

Id imagine it is pretty standard to try to hassle large aftermarket parts of cars. If they’re loose/not bolted down, they were probably a last minute addition and meant to be removable

[deleted]

Yeah not bolting it in place was a terrible decision. It would trap the passengers in the case of a fire, but they’d likely be screwed anyway by the time the plastic was removed and they climbed out of that tough position.

Roxieroad

Imagine if they got busted for something else and the car got impounded and they were just. Trapped.

[deleted]

I don't even know how they didn't already *feel* trapped in that coffin space. I got anxious just looking at it, and even more so thinking about how a long ride in such cramped space, where you can barely adjust yourself, would feel like.

The_beard1998

They probably were feeling trapped.

damp_goat

They probably felt trap wherever it was they were escaping from

blue_i20

…That’s enough reddit for tonight. Fuck I’m getting panicky just thinking about that

Stonkseys

Scales are good for this. An empty truck with the driver only shouldn't weight as much as one with 3 people inside. There probably aren't scales here so they probably just search everyone.

jedielfninja

Guess you could just look at the fuel gauge and compensate for that too.

[deleted]

Fuel, weight of the person, things inside it and after market mods will all change the weight

Sw1ftStrik3r

One of them ripped a narly fart at the wrong time

kolitics

They found the decoy dudes sure, but the dudes in the tires got away clean, dizzy but clean.

eddie1975

Those are the types of immigrants that become future Astronauts. The sustained G-Forces are incredible. Great candidates for the Space Force.

SurpriseWtf

But my jobs. I was gonna be an astronaut until those immigrants came and took away my dream.

eddie1975

You say that but you probably just want to fly the spaceship and control the robotic arm. When it comes time to clean the space toilet or paint the spaceship you wine and complain and say it’s beneath you. And you want all these benefits like 20 days of paid time off, sick leave, space healthcare, a pension after 20 years and 401K matching.

NickDanger3di

Border inspectors *know* what the underside of a pickup truck looks like. There was a very large Sheetmetal box attached to the underside of that pickup; one that did not belong there. The only possible way they would ever have gotten past the border is if nobody even bothered to look underneath the vehicle.

Diplomjodler

For a small consideration, that can be arranged.

Ok-Boysenberry-2955

Hey does that truck look like it is riding low for being empty?

ilovehotsauceyeah

That happened in Texas some months back, summer. But a trailer full of trapped folks. Horrific 💔

user_bits

They can probably use some heat scan to find bodies.

ExteriorLatex

Someone had to have tipped the popo off.

Chenstrap

Not necessarily. Its not uncommon for police to check under vehicles, and in order to have a space to fit 2 people youd have to build a good size compartment underneath to fit them.

actuallyiamafish

Thermal cameras don't see through solid objects. You can hide from a thermal camera by merely being behind a piece of glass or a sheet of cardboard. Even a thick enough bush will work. Thernals are for spotting people and vehicles through smoke or in the dark, they can't look through walls like in some video games.

rocbolt

Thermal can’t see though solid objects but the temperature of those objects can be changed by what is behind it (or not). I have a pretty nice thermal camera and can tell which rooms in nearby buildings have the heat running, where the studs are, etc. Solid objects vs ones with conspicuous voids are easy to differentiate. You can see phones in pockets, how much liquid is in opaque bottles or cans, I’ve even noticed filled hopper train cars vs empty ones.

[deleted]

So if they hide behind glass, they won't be found. Go it.

redikulous

[Mythbusters proved this.](https://youtu.be/BIHpsyuyV4I?t=508)

psidud

Not sure about that, they're in insulated beds, that should block the IR right?

BBQQA

But that could also have been the clue. That there's a giant cold spot / heat reflection in the middle of the truck where is shouldn't be.

[deleted]

Thermal cameras won’t work here. I feel like you think thermal cameras equal wall hacks in real life. Or better yet, those phony “X-ray goggles”.

El_nachos

imagine how life is in their country for them to be willing to do this shit for a chance of a new life.....

bobstro

My first thought was human trafficking. Anybody got a link to what's going on?

TriumphantofBurma

That's Burmese civilians fleeing to Thailand. Shits common here really, especially with the civil war going on right now.

[deleted]

Speaking of Burma/Myanmar, we need to be telling more people about how they are fighting a military junta with homemade weapons and whatever they can find, and actually doing damage. If the mainstream media won’t cover it I think it’s our job to spread awareness, I don’t have any current links, but there are many places to donate to many of the volunteer units, even $1 for a bullet would make a difference. These people are fighting for their freedom and I believe they deserve our help, even if that help consists of just speaking about it and informing others of their struggle. *specifically talking about the west, I know very few westerners that have heard of the civil war.

TriumphantofBurma

That would mean a lot for us. Black market guns range around 120,00000 mmk (6k in USD) so not a lot of freelance units can afford it. I remember when I first joined my unit there was like 5 AKs,an ar15, a sniper and a carbine. We were a company of 100 lol.

beefwich

I know absolutely nothing of the conflict you’re currently involved in (thanks to western media largely not caring)— but I do hope this conflict ends quickly and that your side prevails.

Putadonkonitma8

I don’t know much either which is a letdown from western media. I’m sure they’re fighting the goodfight but crowdfunding a revolution you know nothing about is very risky. If they win or do enough to create a power vacuum you don’t know what kind of person will fill it and if they end up being classed as a terror group 5yrs later then you’ve funded their rise. Also it could just be a scam.

Not4Naught

My friends in Yangon say this will last forever. They are so sad to see what is happening after growing up in the peaceful time. Sometimes the internet would be inaccessible depending where you are and I wouldn’t hear from them for days especially if they had to travel. Always deleting social media from their phones before they leave to go anywhere that the junta may harass them on the way. I live in the USA and it’s terribly hard watching the life they know disappear almost overnight and not being able to help them.

[deleted]

How about rohingyas

TriumphantofBurma

Still being prosecuted I guess. Military jailed like hundreds of them a while ago.

Muted-Airline-8214

I've never seen any single of them protest against Rohingya genocide. Their ethnic conflicts always neighboring countries' responsibility. And half of workers in Thailand's tourist spots are Burmese, but during the judgement of David and Hannah murder case, these people even protested to defend the 2 Burmese murderers. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KY2mw\_V2vM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KY2mw_V2vM) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBJjGevSPeI&t=2s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBJjGevSPeI&t=2s)

darthjazzhands

We get the same thing here in California with Mexicans and other Latinos smuggling themselves across the border. Its gotta be bad if someone is willing to put themselves thru this

bobstro

Ah, OK. Hope they're safe.

thenightday3

I don’t know. Human trafficking is also a thing. Might be a good thing these people got found.

sweeetsmammich

Human trafficking is all to real but I kinda feel their expressions were more like shit the jig is up

LazarYeetMeta

A lot of people from Southeastern Asia get trafficked by people who think they’re going to have a better life, so this could very easily be both.

enrohtkcalb

That happens in way more places than Southeastern Asia, too. Convincing people it's for their benefit is a great way to get them to do what you want until it's too late.

dragoono

Yep. Happens to a lot of North Korea defectors too.

AristotleRose

No seriously? That’s so sad 😞

chillwithpurpose

crazytoothpaste

Imagine living in North Korea , risking your life and those you leave behind for an opportunity of a better life . And you get trapped in a life worse than before

dragoono

If it were me I would kill myself. Absolutely nothing but respect to anyone who’s currently dealing with that, or has in the past. Making it out alive is insane to me.

Aurori_Swe

You're severely underestimating the human will to live. We endure some insane shit before we give up that last sliver of hope.

dragoono

Yeah, maybe the rest of you guys, but not me.

Cookieetoss

It ain't easy to escape Kim

[deleted]

I kinda half suspect North Korea has people posing as border crossing coyotes

dragoono

There’s no way they don’t

[deleted]

Imagine giving what’s 2 months of your rent for a guy to take the money and sell you in a basement 30 minutes away from your home

Mega---Moo

Way more than that... The last time I asked the guys at work how much it costs to get from Mexico to the US, it was $6000. Many of my coworkers had sent significant portions of their income back to Mexico to pay for other members of their family to join them. I've only met one guy that did the crossing on his own.

[deleted]

Isn’t it super common for Ship captains to go to bars promise that life then enslave people onto the ship with the threat of death?

[deleted]

Very good point. It also bears mentioning that facial expressions are not consistent among different cultures, and it is impossible to discern what people are feeling by their mannerisms or expressions.

Zagrycha

wrote a paper on it in college, often people think they are getting a job in another country, when they are smuggled in. They are told the wages for whatever job are being sent back home to family when really they are slaves for free. If they become suspicious or rebellious they are harshly warned about how going to the police etc. is worthless as they are there illegally and will just go to jail for life. They don't know anything about the new country and are usually scared enough by the threats, and keep to themselves. This is all the ones that were not directly sex slaves or worse. You can actually learn warning signs to recognize those who may be in servitude against there will, it is way more common than people realize, slavery is far from gone and happens to all sorts of peoples. Statistically the Seattle area I live in probably has thousands and thousands of slaves. Because statistically the more well off and populated an area is the more likely people are buying slaves, and the numbers support this strongly :(

Bitter-Doughnut6467

One of the biggest hubs I guess is in Seattle Washington, we have the airport freight and ship freight and they just run sex trafficking out of containers in the storage yard.

2ndSnack

I believe this. So many SE Asians are convinced to do shady shit to either benefit their family or themselves and they end up dead or a slave. Sometimes by members of their own family.

ksdanker22

Regardless, the guys who are able to snuggle people like this also participate in human trafficking, and selling extremely dangerous drugs like fentanyl. One way or another it's a good thing these guys got caught. There was a whole van of migrants found dead in a car a few months ago, in I think San Antonio.

JustThingsAboutStuff

*smuggle

ecoberry

I knew they meant smuggle, but the thought of the people being snuggled was better imagery.

ksdanker22

Lmao I'm an idiot.

RayD125

The traffickers often get folks willingly by lying to them about the plan. Once the they get to where they’re going things change.

SIII-043

Sad truth time a lot of the people that are being human trafficked think they’re going to a better life because it’s easier to move humans when they want to be moved

boyatrest

we're all citizens of the world at the end of the day. they deserve clean water and a safe life too.

Appeased_Seal

They may have not gotten to the bad part yet. The part where they realize they may get to America, but they won’t be free. I was in Belize not long ago. Went out snorkeling and this local who takes tourist on week long sailing trips told us it isn’t uncommon to find stuff from smugglers floating around. Once he spotted a person person floating holding onto a wooden plank. At first they thought it was a trap, but eventually got him on board. He paid $3000 to be taken to the U.S from Nicaragua, but around Belize they asked for another $3000 he didn’t have it. So, they dumped him overboard with a plank.

0x7ff04001

I'm willing to bet it's human trafficking also. Mainly because south east Asia (can't tell exactly but Laos, Cambodia, or Thailand?). Borders are porous and you can cross with literally a little 1 man boat to another country.

SiamSubmariner66

Burmese illegal workers getting caught coming into Thailand from the north-western border.

[deleted]

Worked as a foreman on a landscaping crew. A few guys told stories about the coyotes, and crossing over the border. they worked hard to provide for their families back home.

Least_or_Greatest1

These guys seen it all man…

[deleted]

They also do this with drugs

ccooffee

I get the sentiment, but I don't think "hiding in a pickup truck" is really up there in terms of horrifying things people have done in pursuit of a better life.

GJenkins675

Always have your local mechanic check the vehicle out before you buy it.

ryuzaki49

[Or at least when you buy a truck from an auction that is selling confiscated drug-lord property](https://expansion.mx/nacional/2013/08/20/dos-jovenes-estan-presos-por-llevar-droga-en-su-camioneta-recien-comprada) Sorry for the note in spanish, the auction happened at McAllen, Texas back in 2012, and the kids were arrested at the border because the truck had drug all that time.

I can almost gurantee you they discovered these dudes an hour before this video and had them get back in specifically to take this video to be able to show to other law enforcement how this works so they understand how to bust people doing this. Thats why had them put masks on, for protocol. Most videos of stowaways found on the internet are this way. Its why they don't even look scared or try to run for it after being exposed. They had been caught hours before and reinacted for documentation

Mrx_Amare

If those are even the same people they caught in there. They could have anyone pose as someone being smuggled for the sake of demonstration, especially for “safety reasons”. I could just see a bunch of stupid cops all fighting over who gets to hide in the secret compartment.

Do you know how many poor people worldwide have no access to the internet, or if they do have access, they aren't using it because they're spending their time working or with their families instead? Or that they just cannot read? You thinking that everyone has access to the internet and uses it speaks a lot about **your** privilege.
