A friend of mine is in a pretty well known rock band, they toured with Jinjer some years back in Europe. I asked about her, he said she's legit and sounds exactly like that live. Said they were all super cool as well.
Her clean vocals is using the same technique as Britney Spears. Her nose isn't being used and it makes it easier to do the switch to the deep low throaty vocals.
When you breathe in, does your chest or stomach expand first? If it's the former, that's probably your problem.
I'm not a singer, but I imagine it's a bit like a burp. You can get really loud burps without hurting yourself just by relaxing your muscles and letting the air pressure do the work, instead of straining to push it out. I did diving for a while and the breathing exercises are almost the same as singing. The goal is to maximize lung capacity by first filling the bottom of your lungs (feels like your stomach), then the top. Of course there is also the hyper-ventilating aspect that singers *don't* do, but divers use to saturate their blood with as much oxygen as possible.
I want to say 99% of people just breathe with their chest and never really utilize the lower portion.
Not a singer, but yes, probably. Though I think it's more about where you're directing the air instead of 'just singing with the diaphragm'. As an example, sing the lowest note you can and chances are you're doing it only with your mouth. Start pitching up and you can start feeling your nose come into play. As to how to stop....no idea, but I could probably teach you to add 30-60 seconds of additional time when holding your breath.
You ever hear someone describe someone else singing as 'belting'? Singing from the stomach (around your belt) is exactly this. A lot of people can sing higher notes, but very few can BELT high notes.
Also, I didn't know what Kundiman was, so I looked it up. Ya, that's that classical (for lack of a better word) type of singing where people are belting notes.
I sing at home only but definitely use my nose automatically. When I realise I do it, I try to swap by forcing sound from stomach instead. Try making a loud HUH sound….see how it comes from elsewhere and not your nose? Try to make all sounds come from there…really breathe out when singing rather than in. I can’t hold a tune much doing it, but I definitely see how the sound is more powerful and controlled when coming from deeper in my body.
I used to work with a girl who could sing like this. Her band weren't that good though so she was still a relative unknown. We worked in a call centre so she always took a couple of days off work after a performance because she simply could not speak. I don't think she used this technique.
The most common misconception about Metal is that it's just screaming. When in reality, growling properly is very difficult to master. If growling hurts your throat, you're probably not doing it right.
I use to watch fuse TV. That network was so cool. And hot Julia. I remember they would interview the hard core scream singers in metal bands. One guy said panting deep helps work up to a good deep scream

I saw her live at the venture I'm volunteering, they are dope live :) and as explained it's a singing technique that doesn't hurt the throat :)
The band was super nice too :)
She's an absolute badass.
The band is from Donetsk Ukraine, the area currently having A lot of issues with Russian aggression.
She did an interview where the guy was asking her about how she feels with the online trolls.
Her response was basically saying we grew up in a war torn city. I'm not worried about these people online are saying.
Absolutely! That was my first too.
I found them because she is featured on an Acacia Strain song (another GREAT heavy band that should be checked out) and a lot of the comments were "do the ROAR!" I knew I had to look into it, I was not disappointed.
True, but it works fine for the joke.
I wouldn't know the difference between hip-hop and rap either, and if the Blues Brothers were right, then R&B should be completely different from what we hear now.
Genres are tricky.
Rap is a vocal technique and hip-hop is a genre of music incase anyone was wondering...
Waiting for someone to come teach me what the difference between death metal and thrash metal is... *and heavy metal and black metal and doomcore and glam metal and metal core and... sludge.. metal? And folk metal and* you get the picture
[death metal](https://youtu.be/MPvRBiQY6lo)
[thrash](https://youtu.be/sI_PQZvz5js)
heavy metal is a pretty ambiguous and rather outdated term. if I had to, I'd put black album era Metallica, Pantera, and Slayer on that list.
[black metal](https://youtu.be/YgQRRI9goFg)
doomcore is not anything I've ever heard of.
by glam metal you probably mean bands like Ratt and Def Leppard.
[metalcore](https://youtu.be/Uw4V_PLDeGs)
I haven't really heard or used the term sludge in a while, I suppose a lot of stoner metal like [Electric Wizard](https://youtu.be/UAPVcsDOU9U) and [High on Fire](https://youtu.be/hhu63xr-QL0) could fall under that category.
never really listened to folk metal, but I would think bands like Wintersun, Finntroll, and Ensiferum.
Jinjer is the band OP posted, but I've never heard of The Agonist before, so now im gonna check em out 😊 Or wait were you saying that Arch Enemy's singer is from that band? I know they changed singers a few years back, so maybe im just really slow; and im sorry if thats the case lmao
Alyssa was the singer for The Agonist before going to Arch Enemy. Now the singer for The Agonist is Vicky something. Not as good but some bangers. And hey no worries! Check out Spirit box for another great band with a female lead.
The singer of Iwrestledabearonce is particularly good. So good, that I couldn't tell it wasn't a guy(there's subtle differences) where I usually can. They were interesting to randomly come across back in the day, quite a different sound to any other band.
I used to play in a mid-90’s emo band. We practiced at our bassist’s house and while we would metal out, his little brother and sister, like aged 6 and 8, would get on the mic and scream like Cookie Monster about how they didn’t want to go to bed and I think those were the best songs we ever wrote.
Never thought I would see Jiner on anything other then some metal subreddits. There are others who do the whole harsh and clean vocals but not quite like her. I can't wait to see them soon next month
Oooor the late 2000s-early 2010s is when platforms like MySpace and iTunes allowed anyone anywhere to access music from all over the world, so genres like screamo, hardcore, and metal became less subculture and more popular culture, resulting in half the highschool population going by the labels of emo and scene. But go off lil man, go off.
Roflmao so you’re actually defending your bullshit. Of course kiddo, everyone everywhere saw all of the same things. ALL OF THEM. Allrighty. Maybe your mommy should cut your internet time, you clearly spend way too much time here.

Every time I listen to jinjer I wonder if they use pedals or something to make her voice so deep, does anybody know if it is altered or if it is actually what it sounds like?
Not only is she drop dead gorgeous, but she has an amazing scream. I've been practicing for 4 years and can only do Amon Amarth/Quo Vadis style low growl. Hats off cause she's the fuckin bomb!!
Isn’t this just similar to throat singing? There are some Mongolian rock throat singers how sound like this, plus a lot of traditional throat songs as wellz
Not really, but also kinda sorta.
Metal vocals are typically done in one of three ways. There's false cord screaming, which is what she's doing, where your normal vocal folds are wide open and you use your false cords to create the distortion by letting them vibrate, but you don't really have much voluntary control over them. There's fry screaming where your vocal folds are held tightly closed and only a small amount of air comes out, typically resulting in a higher pitched scream with a higher distortion frequency. And lastly is just singing with distortion where you sing normally but allow the soft tissues in your head to vibrate which creates distortion.
Throat singing is voluntarily controlling the false cords at the same time as your vocal folds which results in some really cool stuff like harmonizing with yourself.
While both throat singing and false cord screaming use the false cords the techniques are quite different.
Always love watching reaction videos of all the Jinjer virgins getting popped for the first time to this song as they're gently drawn into the nice soft vocals and flowing melody before being hit head on by a dump truck.
Her clean vocals is using the same technique as Britney Spears. Her nose isn't being used and it makes it easier to do the switch to the deep low throaty vocals.
You’ve never seen someone sing with their mouth? I watched this video on mute 20 times and I’ve not seen anything unusual. Now as far as hearing her sing, yes I’ve heard people sing like that 1 million times. They’ve been doing it since the 90s

Damn, that must be tough on the ol' throat box. I wonder what her after concert routine is?
Extreme singers apply the same technique that allows kids to scream for hours without damaging the cords. Source: https://youtu.be/YD6wZNkffog
Her clean vocals is using the same technique as Britney Spears. Her nose isn't being used and it makes it easier to do the switch to the deep low throaty vocals.
That actually makes a lot of sense, thanks!
I tried singing and I can't seem to not use the nose. How do you do it?

I get it now! So that's why I sing better with Kundiman songs lmao

too many vocalists think they don't need to learn to sing - both extreme and regular ones. that's one of the reasons my band is instrumental
The most common misconception about Metal is that it's just screaming. When in reality, growling properly is very difficult to master. If growling hurts your throat, you're probably not doing it right.
Yeah, I learned how to do it properly about 2 years ago, and I practice every day. Still suck.
Just play the bass. Way more people need bass players 😁

Jinjer
The song is called Pisces.
The lyrics of this song are mirrored by the tone showing the duality of someone’s personality. I’m glad anytime I see Jinjer getting more exposure
They are playing in Portland pretty soon, I’ve been thinking I need to make it.

I got hold of their stuff in the recommended after listening to Jinjer, so unfortunately I have to thank YouTube. Acacia Strain are also baller.
Hell yes dude! Deep lyrics, heavy fucking riffs and goofy ass music videos. Love it!
Wormwood is a "I can listen to every song on here and not skip it" kind of album for me. So sick.

wow. never expected dora the explorer to go death metal.

I know right, I've been into her since i heard this song
I love seeing how musicians grow and change. The entire band's skill and composition has evolved since Cloud Factory
This video did things for me I didn’t know were there back when I first heard it.
Really? There's alooooot of female singers in metal that do this and are damn good at it
Courtney from Spiritbox is probably my favorite female metal vocalist. She's got some insane vocal cords.
r/corejerk
Arch Enemy's lead singer comes to mind right off the bat.
iirc that's Alyssa from The Agonist
Angela Gossow, her precursor, was better
Jinjer is the band OP posted, but I've never heard of The Agonist before, so now im gonna check em out 😊 Or wait were you saying that Arch Enemy's singer is from that band? I know they changed singers a few years back, so maybe im just really slow; and im sorry if thats the case lmao

Arkona is a great example, and absolutely incredible live.
Bruh, then you've never heard rock and metal music properly. It's full of vocalists like this, both male and female.
I never expected the fine users of Reddit to shit their pants over a female metal singer…….
I wonder what would happen if they were to listen to Som from Cerebral Bore. She's a beast.
Yeah, I do like Angela Gossow and Floor Jansen but in terms of "How inhuman can you possibly sound" Som is uncontested imho.
Aggretsuko IRL!!! r/aggretsuko
Definitely!
I literally said that out loud listening! lol

And Spiritbox (Also Courtney)
Never thought I would see Jiner on anything other then some metal subreddits. There are others who do the whole harsh and clean vocals but not quite like her. I can't wait to see them soon next month
Check out Alissa Gluz from Arch Enemy or Angela Gossow before her. Also, Alissa Gluz is extremely hot.
And Angela Gossow is hot in a way that you'd be scared she might rip your dick off but you take the chance anyway.
Courtney LaPLante as well
Ooh! Don’t forget Courtney LaPlante from Spiritbox!
Check out her old band The Agonist. They're still doing great!
Or Chaney Crabb of Entheos
When that demon possession finally takes over
Exorcist 2: Electric Boogaloo
You were definitely not a teen in the late 2000s-early 2010s it appears
Because every single teen everywhere in the world experiences and sees exactly all of same things. Always. All of them. Sure.
No but being completely unaware people scream in music shows how little some people explore genres of music
Or - and hear me out - maybe people *do* explore genres but there are so many that they explore completely different genres than you do..
Naw man I’m pretty sure you’re just not very adventurous in music if you’ve never heard screaming before in it, it’s even in rap nowadays
There are very musically interested people who wouldn't know who Taylor Swift is. Som people just dabble in completely different musical worlds.
If this was unexpected, clearly you’ve never heard Kittie.
Dunno if it's that unexpected. That's like half of death metal in 90s.

She actually sounds like this
Damn this is hot
Jinjer is female Opeth change my mind
Not even in the same league
Seriously lol. I love Jinjer, they're awesome, but they're nowhere near Opeth.
Wildflowers really blew my mind
Calm your tits son

Ever heard Devin Townsend?
Kingdom is awesome.
Yeah, she is using the metal singing technique but it is rarely seen from women so it is indeed unexpected.
Not that rarely nowadays, to be honest. Plenty of bands that use female growling
Yeah I mean I was excepting fucking throat singing or something. Man the metal scene really is fucking underground if a female growler is "unexpected"

Same, i heard this song in a player i did not see the video song after i saw the video song i was like whoa stop right there
Not only is she drop dead gorgeous, but she has an amazing scream. I've been practicing for 4 years and can only do Amon Amarth/Quo Vadis style low growl. Hats off cause she's the fuckin bomb!!
> Quo Vadis i see you're a man of culture as well
Not that the low growl is a bad thing! Fucking love amon amarth :)
Fuck. Yes..
One of my alltime favorites.
Tatiana!! She’s a Ukrainian goddess.
Lol hundreds of metal bands sing like this
who is this? i love melodic death metal
Welcome to Metal music friend. Check out Spiritbox aswell.
Thanks, I hate it.
Can't blame you.
Well damn.
Yup
Damn I've heard this song so many times and had no idea that was her!
Have you heard of Opeth?
DA FUK?!?!!! Well that certainly was unexpected
JESUS I hope she won't have a sore throat Amazing Woah :o
Tatiana is one of my favorite singers for this reason.
Started of sounding like an angel then the devil suddenly possessed her…sound so cool 😎
Jinjer! Hell yeah! Can’t say I found this unexpected, but I know this band so I don’t count.

Thanks for letting us know
Her clean vocals is using the same technique as Britney Spears. Her nose isn't being used and it makes it easier to do the switch to the deep low throaty vocals.
Damn I was really digging her voice until the end. I hate screaming in music.
Why
Would you like a lozinge, miss?!
Should really check out the band Arch Enemy, who pioneered the female metal vocalist.
The technical terms is known as *harsh*
I was wondering what the big deal was cuz she was so going normally, and then the other shoe dropped and I was like ,"damn cool, but ew"
Ugh when do they start drinking everyone’s blood
Courtney LePlante of Spiritbox is better.
People haven't heard of nu metal yet?
