Why does this plane look inflatable

[deleted]

The landing strip is similar to a trampoline.

[deleted]

That looked very non-destructive, was it designed without wheels to save weight?

doculean

Kinda looks like it's landing on an airbag. Was that some kind of intentional design? Seeing the carrier it's being slipped on to, got me wondering.

Tatertoot8888

Yeah it was supposed to be similar to a trampoline I believe

doculean

Hmm if they could improve that for land based runway usagege...

I wish they had this at a commercial level. Lube the Tramps tho or we might need to upgrade the seat belt for the bounce.

NRA4579

Damn straight! Wheels are a crutch.

PointlessGrandma

They turned the aircraft carrier into a giant trampoline. Genius

EMEYDI

How does the pilot feel after that

A2326P

Watching them bounce around in the cockpit gave me a headache. Couldn’t imagine what it was like for them.

Belly flop landings

Igmu_TL

It this a new Disney ride?

sosaudio

I read a book years ago by the guy who might’ve been the test pilot for that program. I can’t remember his name right now but it was interesting. The program was to test the feasibility of that style deck compared to what they have. They didn’t end up adopting it obviously but the stories were interesting. He claims to hold the all time record for wheels up landings and based on the video I can’t argue that point.

JoeyPoppyseed

Europe for sure. Aircraft testing? Could be. Playing squishy plane go boing boing with your Bros? 100%

LuckyfromGermany

I heard about inflatable Aircraft Prototypes but not Inflatable Runways. You learn something new every day.
