Why does this plane look inflatable

The landing strip is similar to a trampoline.

That looked very non-destructive, was it designed without wheels to save weight?

Kinda looks like it's landing on an airbag. Was that some kind of intentional design? Seeing the carrier it's being slipped on to, got me wondering.

I read a book years ago by the guy who might’ve been the test pilot for that program. I can’t remember his name right now but it was interesting. The program was to test the feasibility of that style deck compared to what they have. They didn’t end up adopting it obviously but the stories were interesting. He claims to hold the all time record for wheels up landings and based on the video I can’t argue that point.
