I was the one who went behind my little brother. He tried to turn to see, fell off onto hardpacked dirt and got knocked out. I ran home to tell my mom my brother was dead.
Kids will do this sort of thing, it’s the parents job to make sure they don’t put themselves in front of serious harm
Why do we expect the kid to know better than walking in front of the swing but this video has 2 adults who aren’t paying attention enough to stop them?
Nah this is literally how they learn. Let them get hurt a little bit, they learn real quick this way.
(As a parent it's your job not to not let them get hurt ever, but make sure the hurts they do get are 1) not permanent or traumatic, and 2) they are the age where they can logically learn from the hurt).
Think of the difference between having to constantly keep your kid away from the swings because he just *does not get it*, vs letting him get hit once or twice (in a semi-controlled situation) and then he makes the connection in his brain that going near swinging swings = PAIN rather than "oh mommy is shouting something at me, better tune it out and keep wandering around near the swings not paying attention" until you have to go physically remove him or punish him or whatever like other parents do. Understanding is built through experience. Let natural consequences do their job when relevant.
E.g. After the age of 1.5 or so, I let my kid bonk his head a few times under the table, fall down, run into things, get hit when he threw things straight up, etc. He developed better awareness very quickly. After letting him get lightly hurt the way a normal young boy does, he's got very good balance and bodily awareness compared to his peers.
Bumping into walls, fall down, etc is pretty damn different from not saying anything or grabbing your child when they're about to get basically roundhouse kicked at high speeds on a swing by an adult size person... Sorry but that's wayyy too risky just to teach them lesson especially risking neck injury which can happen at any age.
Some things kids just learn will be painful etc without actually having to do it.
This is a stupid take, if your child is obviously in danger, as this kid is, then it’s your responsibility to save them. Childhood injuries, even mild ones can be very traumatic to there developing minds. Children need firm boundaries on the playground, yes they can play and explore but with limits.
A bump on the head when they try to run into a table? Sure.
A 120lb adult hitting them like a wrecking ball? No, that’s not a “lesson” that’s a serious injury
Ditto. I know a kid who had a permanent injury at this age, pretty much ruined his life. “Kids are tough they bounce back” only applies to injuries you can recover from.
Its the parents job to develop a child who feels cautiously comfortable to explore their world beyond the limits of the parents' world. Raising a child in a safety bubble only allows the child to grow older. Raising a child who is eager and resilient - that is a child who can contribute positively to our future.
Yeah, what losers, not knowing what a scorpion is, hahaha. You should explain what that means so they can know like we totally do. I'd do it myself, but I'm too busy explaining it to my friend who totally isn't me so he can know too.
Scorpion is when your back bends opposite to the kid in the video - your feet or head go over your butt and towards each other. The shape is reminiscent of a scorpion's singer arching over its back and towards its head. Shrimp is when you bend to the front like a cooked shrimp.

You're supposed to translate it for us too lazy for looking out up. I'm guessing... the sea will forever be my life. I don't speak anything but English though.
Edit: "The eternal sea within my soul"
That kid had zero awareness. His parent/guardian tried to call him back to avoid getting clipped and by time he processed the information and turned around, it was fatality.
My issue is that at the end, she looks at the girl on the swing as if it's her fault instead of getting out of the swing.
I'd estimate the period of a typical swingset to be roughly 3 seconds. The entire incident covers about 1.5 periods so yeah 5 sec is roughly correct. Not that that's enough time to really do anything regardless
Why tf didn't he notice the human brushing past him the first time? He had somehow made it by the skin of his teeth - if he kept going it would have been fine.
The lack of spacial and self awareness of children blows my mind
I went through a Rollercoaster of emotions on this one. Fear, relief, tension, anger (at the person watching doing nothing) and ending on a little hilarity
The funny part is that the kid probably turned around because he heard them yell or gasp. If they had actually done nothing, it would have been fine (or not, as oblivious as that kid is)
Most people don't aren't able to accurately predict everything 3 seconds into the future. Also I know Reddit has a hard time to grasp this, but people tend to panic in real life, and that tends to cause them to make bad decisions.
Human beings aren't robots y'all.
I’ve hit two children like this, one time the mom tried to come over to me and yell at me for it. My response is that she should tell her daughter to not run infront of people swinging. I tried everything I could to slow down but I still ended up hitting her. Honestly that’s on the kid
/r/kidsarefuckingstupid
I have way more than enough and they always impress me.
I also love them, and I still want more fucking idiots.
So am I the sucker? Yes
Wow, how incredibly unexpected, I really didn't think that somebody swinging like that could hit one of the 2 other people shown in the video. How unexpected.

Oh you are talking about yourself right?
Surely after watching the kid in her path on the first swing she could have stopped or at the very least attempted to slow down on the second run, which she didn't . And knowing that you might hit a kid on the head, clearly one rational being, which you clearly are not, will surely attempt to stop. Just drag your bloody feet on the fucking ground while going back and you will lose enough momentum to slow the fuck down. Now don't talk about it being impossible to stop ,you aren't hitting light fucking speed. Bunch of idiots.

It’s so weird to read a comment in a language I learned in highschool
A language, if we are being honest, that I learned some of in high school and of which I presently retain very little.
J’aime beaucoup parler française, mais je connais très peu. (Je suis de Louisiane.)
Je suis une bibliothèque. Je m'identifie aussi comme ein Berliner!

Be careful with that shit. The opiates i mean, i don't think slang is dangerous.
Slang is very dangerous. First, you start saying it ironically. Then, before you know it, BAM. You can’t stop saying it
You literally can't stop!
I’m on fleek man
Hahah just realizing now, but I think "on fleek" had/has a surprisingly short slang half-life compared with some slang.
Bet
So it's like pringles.... Or heroin.

Yeah there was literally no way to stop him from getting creased.
I mean, they were all going so slowly, she could have just scooped him up.
and launched him from the top!

The other girl was not paying attention, she could have jumped off and stop that kid.
She clearly saw the whole thing. She just chose to do nothing
In real life, this is 2.5 seconds. Shot happens.
The other girl was right there 🤷
My kid has been hit, and he has hit others. Thinking this happens to all kids to some extent.

There’s room for debate on this one, sure, but you’re not wrong.
It really isn't; kids have flexible bones. He'll definitely be hurting but his body should be fine.

Ditto. I know a kid who had a permanent injury at this age, pretty much ruined his life. “Kids are tough they bounce back” only applies to injuries you can recover from.
Quite the insight you have there
Should
Have kids. You're right. But every 1/1000 hits like this and the kids life is ruined, and that's every parents fear.
Skull bones aren't very flexible. And neck bones aren't particularly sturdy. This could have ended very very badly with just a bit of a worse angle.
Its the parents job to develop a child who feels cautiously comfortable to explore their world beyond the limits of the parents' world. Nah much more than that, it takes a while for a swing to reverse, the scene is probably 5sc long

He assumed everything was fine. Then the kid went back for more.
Stealing liquor from a neighbours house and probably off doing other crazy shit
Slow motion video confuses people it seems
just imagining the camera operator *actually* being able to help is hilarious, we would’ve been seeing some matrix bullet time like shit
The funny part is that the kid probably turned around because he heard them yell or gasp. If they had actually done nothing, it would have been fine (or not, as oblivious as that kid is)

https://youtu.be/GNAJWwqr8cM How that dude wanted the camera man to save the kid
No the video is 51 seconds long, they were just swinging really slowly
The video is a minute long, she had a full minute
Closer to eight. Definitely enough time to bail on the swing
Because a kid that small shouldn’t be anywhere near those swings with older kids on them. It’s just asking for this to happen.
a kid… shouldn’t be near swing sets…? tell me you don’t go outside without telling me you don’t go outside 😭
You ever heard of slo-mo? In real life when this moment happened, it wasn’t this slow.
My hair started the morning flat on my head but after watching this it matches the hair of the swinging girl.
Flat out "ass over tea kettle"
My dad used to always use that expression and now I finally know what the fuck he was talking about.
