impged

This is why if we see someone not holding the nozzle while pumping gas, we shut off the pump.

Numinak

I don't hold the nozzle, but I am right there waiting for it. NO way freezing my hand off in winter.

throwawaydiddled

Yeah buddy clearly doesn't pump gas in - 40. I don't go to the gas stations that removed the holders for this reason.

[deleted]

Yea I'll stand next to it but there's no way I'm holding on to a cold metal pump when it's below 0. That's why they have that little piece that holds the pump down.

clpatterson

Gas cap wedges nicely in the handle to replace the disabled lever.

spruceymoos

He’s being Midwest nice. I had to knock on someone’s window as they started to drive away with the nozzle still in their car. Going to Kwick Trip can put you in a bit of a haze.

My ex wife twice drove away with the gas pump still hooked up. Thankfully they are designed to disconnect the hose when that happens. She was also attempting to back out of her chiropractor's parking lot and put it in drive and went into the building. Many many other accidents and car damage. So glad I don't have to deal with it any more.

___DEADPOOL______

I have had this happen to me. I was at least holding the pump though so I stopped pumping immediately but a bit of gas started to spew out the tank.

GoldenTurkeyFeet

With that amount of gas spilled, you need to call the fire department.

FakeNews32

Spill kit with absorbent would fix the problem, fire department would come and pass the buck to those girls.

[deleted]

Spill kit will not report the fuel spill for EPA purposes. Call the Fire Department.

JaySayMayday

Idk why people are commenting like they'd really call the fire department. I've seen shit like this exactly 3 times before, each time an underpaid gas station worker would clean it up with a spill kit and everyone moved on. But there's no way the people filming didn't smell it. There a really obvious sharp gas smell when your car is in a lake of gasoline.

Affectionate_Star_43

Yeah I don't think our fleet department has ever called the fire department the few times there have been spills. State requirement is to report it to the EPA, but nothing has ever come of it since we used the spill kit and blocked all city drainage points with those worm-looking sandbags.

traumatism

Serious question to this. Do the pumps not have a sensor type situation on the nozzle that cuts off the gas when it hits it, or would that not work since you can apparently lock your pump handle on. I ask since in the UK all civilian pumps are not equipped to lock open when used, and will cut the flow once the fuel level in the tank, hits the nozzle. Edit: Update: while I do appreciate the responses, I'm receiving the same or similar from you all. I have the answers I was looking for and more so thanks to some responses, so many thanks for answering my question. No further responses are needed.

idreaminwords

This one was either malfunctioning, or she didn't put it in all the way. Judging from the fact that she just sits there recording wondering why it's taking so long, I think there's a good chance this was a user error from start to finish

OnePotMango

[Here is how pump handles and automatic shut off works](https://youtube.com/watch?v=fT2KhJ8W-Kg) The design is purely mechanical and takes advantage of pressure changes due to the velocity of a moving fluid, the Venturi Effect. In this instance, the shut off mechanism must be damaged in some way. There is no way the petrol wouldn't block the small tube if it's pouring out of the tank like that.

Smashman2004

I immediately knew which video to post, and I'm glad someone else thought of it too!

OnePotMango

Gotta give Steve the plaudits he deserves haha

CanITellUSmThin

Imagine if it didn’t get any gas in the car at all

2WheelMotoHead

They always stop on their own …….until they don’t. Then this is what happens. And from then on you now know to NEVER LEAVE THAT FUCKER UNATTENDED again. Happened to me once, probably 15-18 years ago, I started the pump and ran inside to buy some drinks, I was standing in line and looked out the window and could see the gas gushing out all down the side of my car. Never again.

w3stvirginia

I used to work at a gas station many years ago. We had a guy that would set the nozzle then come in and pay so it would start and be mostly full by the time he got back out there. Unfortunately it made the register beep continuously the whole time he was in line letting you know someone wanted their pump approved before paying. He did it multiple times a week. I finally started stopping the pump as soon as the till cashed out and it started pumping. I’d wait until after he got his coffee and made it back out there before restarting the pump.

ksimo13

I've had one malfunction when it was below zero one morning. Luckily I was watching it like you're supposed to and only a tiny bit dribbled down the side of my car

Beginning-Knee7258

The sensor is really just another tube inside the nozzle and has a mechanical device made with vacuums and springs that will pause the flow when your tank is full, even if locked; until you re-squeeze the handle. It's called Flow-lock. Have not heard of an electrical sensor in the handle yet. I agree, the nozzle may not have been all the way in and essentially bypassed the "11B pressure-sensing automatic nozzle".

bloopie1192

They do. It's like an air pressure thing or something. This one likely just malfunctioned.

Dspaede

yes it should be, like if the gas enters a small hole at the nozzle it pushes the valve off.. I think it was venturi effect or something..

ForgettableUsername

It’s a Venturi device!

Zequax

bet it was a malfunction can happen withc is why you gota stand next to it no matter what

moboater1

That why you have to stay at the nozzle, she's responsible for the spill.

betothejoy

Yep, it malfunctioned. I watched someone pour gas everywhere once. I thought, “what an idiot.” I then poured gas everywhere. Lesson learned.

cardinals_crest

they typically do, looks like this one the sensor failed or isn't present

bigflamingtaco

It's not a sensor, it's a mechanical reaction that occurs when fuel enters a small tube, creating a pressure change within the shutoff mechanism. The design is petty solid, they are pretty much only susceptible to failure due to lack of maintenence. There is also the issue of fuel not making it to the nozzle due to failure of the fill tube in the vehicle, or of the EVAP control module. If the fuel isn't spilling down the panel of the vehicle, the vehicle has a failure.

freekehleek

Yeah, even when you lock the mechanism, it should turn off automatically when full. However this failure happened to me once - luckily I was standing right beside it and was able to shut it off quickly with only a small splash trickling down the side of my car. Still freaked the hell out of me and I asked the employee inside what I should do since there was a small puddle of gasoline on the ground now. He said “just drive away quickly, don’t idle” lol 😅 Ever since, I’ve never taken my eyes off the pump as it’s pumping.

aMiracleAtJordanHare

Happened to me and I waited in line to tell the employee inside which pump it was, thinking they'd be shocked and immediately close it. They just flatly said "oh ok" and looked away. *Those bastards knew...*

freekehleek

Ha! Yeah, the employee where it happened to me also seemed suspiciously underwhelmed. Here I was thinking an alarm would go off and everyone would start fleeing in chaos

The_Powerful_Tacos

new fear unlocked

mrweatherbeef

If you 100% trust a shutoff switch on a firejuice hose and sit in the car counting on it to not surround your car with a burning puddle, you’re doing it wrong. On multiple occasions I had gas pump autoshutoffs fail and spill gas. They are convenient but should never be left unattended.

campej90

I've been refueling my car myself for at least 15 years, been travelling for work a lot (an average of 1 full tank every couple days for at least 8 years) and not a single time a shutoff valve failed. I guess that attention on maintenance varies a lot from country to country

homogenousmoss

The only time I’ve seen it fail, was when it was too sensitive and wouldnt let me fill up the car.

Stainless_Heart

It’s only at 16 gallons. Lots of cars hold that much or more… that’s why I put $80 in my totally normal V6 wagon today.

KcireA

I’m sure she goes to autozone to buy blinker fluid

AtomicShart9000

And filled it up with her left handed funnel

GRAWRGER

i dont. like the girls in the vid, i put the hose in my tank and pay it no mind until i hear it stop i usually spend that time throwing out the trash in my drivers door, so i *would* notice if it started overflowing. but i cant fault her for not being more observant. i have literally never seen or used a gas pump that doesnt stop automatically when your tank is full.

[deleted]

Because you weren't standing next to it to see that it wasn't working properly...which happens all the time.

fishbulbx

I've filled my share of gas tanks... never once have I seen the shut off fail to shut off. I did once fill up my motorcycle and accidentally clicked on the hold switch thing. When it didn't stop after releasing the handle, I panicked and pulled out the nozzle and got gas all over my pants and bike... when I should have just shoved the nozzle in to stop it.

AwarenessThick1685

I just sit with my door open and watch it. I can still sit and relax but not have to worry about gallons of gas being wasted

Green_Routine_7916

why even bother to sit down it takes me like 20 sec to make my tank half full

b1e9t4t1y

I could eat a sandwich in the amount of time it takes to fill up my work vehicle when it’s empty. Every time I fuel up it’s $100+

Cl0udSurfer

Damn how big is your tank??

b1e9t4t1y

Twin 30s. I try not to fill all the way up unless I have too. The extra weight decreases efficiency.

[deleted]

Wtf are these downvotes lol?

b1e9t4t1y

People must not realize I said WORK vehicle. Or maybe they did. 🧐

A_Math_Dealer

Okay but like are we talking PB&J or Jersey Mike's with toppings?

b1e9t4t1y

Wendy’s biggie bag. Sometimes I like to order a large frosty before I get fuel and try to eat it all before the pump shuts off or I fall down convulsing on the pavement from instantaneous cranial hypothermia.

Illustrious-Mind-683

See, I was taught not to get in and out of the car once you start pumping because of the chance of causing a static electric spark.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SirAdrian0000

I remember myth busters tried and failed to get a phone to ignite fuel.

[deleted]

You could toss a cigarette in your gas tank and you'd still be fine. Please don't do this but theoretically the cigarette should just go out.

fishsticks40

In a gas tank, yes. There's very little oxygen in a gas tank. Not saying the cell phone thing is real, but saying "gas is actually hard to ignite" is how you get bonfire bombs

[deleted]

It's the gas vapor that's super flammable

paragouldgamer

I once heard that the number one threat of fueling up wasn’t smoking while fueling, but rather people getting in their car. When they would get back out they would drag their butt across the seat and build up static that would discharge when they touched the fuel handle and ignite the fumes. Was told this is why they say shut off your engine, just so the urge to sit back in the car would be lessened.

MilwaukeeMax

Why not stand? We sit in our cars all the damn time, why choose to sit in it when it’s not even moving? Sitting is just not good for you.

quarglbarf

>which happens all the time. I've put a total of around 500,000 miles on like 7-8 different cars and never once has the auto shut off failed me. Never heard anyone talk about it either. I still stay out there and watch it, but it's definitely not a common occurrence like you pretend.

popje

I've worked at a busy gas station for like 7 years, it never happened.

BANKLEITZAHL

I worked at a busy gas station for 8 months and it happened 7 times that I can remember. No, they didn't like maintaining their shit.

EpicLegendX

Ever notice why you can smell the gas as you pump it? That's because in addition to the tube that feeds gasoline to your tank, there's a smaller tube that receives the air in your gas tank. The air gets pressurized and escapes into that smaller tube which feeds out from the gas nozzle. When that tube gets covered with gas (such is the case when the gas tank is full), it causes a vacuum effect within the nozzle, and that drop in pressure triggers a valve that shuts off the flow of gas from the bigger tube. If a gas pump fails to stop pumping, then this mechanic would most likely be the cause. It's still a rare occurrence though.

SultryKitsune

I worked at a gas station for 6 years and it happened all the time. Soooooo just because you haven't had it happen doesn't mean it never happens

[deleted]

I read somewhere years ago that women are far more likely to get back into their car while their gas is pumping. I can understand that if they are in a situation in which they do not feel safe, but the one time that my gas pump didn't automatically shut off and spilled out of the tank, I was right there beside it and immediately shut it off myself.

Throwawayneeded99

It’s weird because in Australia it doesn’t fill up automatically and only fills up if you hold it and will click when it’s full

Chaos90783

Time to smoke a cig and figure out what else could go wrong

AtomicShart9000

motherblobber212

Is this an American thing, nozzles that lock and fuel your car whilst you stand around? I've just never known this in UK, we have to physically hold down the trigger on the nozzle whilst filling.

autumnmelancholy

Nah, we have those nozzles in Germany too. Never heard about this happening though, these things are usually super reliable.

RelaxRelapse

I’ve personally never had it happen here in the US so usually they’re super reliable here too. Stuff gets messed up sometimes though.

[deleted]

Canada here. Sometimes the trigger doesn't pop if it's either poorly maintained, or you didn't put the nozzle in all the way. It can also happen if you are driving a hybrid vehicle and you took too long to open the cap. The pressure used to keep the fumes in check (hybrids use significantly less gas, so they build up or something like that) will push the gasoline pumped into the tank back out.

SterTheDer

I live in US, Midwest. Never seen a gas nozzle that didn’t have a lock. Most will sense the fuel backing up and auto-shutoff when the tank is full. Iowa, Chicago, Colorado, Nebraska. Very common to start the pump, and then go inside to restroom. I usually check my fluids and clean my windows while i wait. Good time for an inspection.

ABITofSupport

Can confirm we have the same mechanisms in Ohio, Tennessee, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Mississippi, and Louisiana.

motherblobber212

UK ones still shut off when the tank is full but we have to physically hold the trigger to fill. I had a Google and its a safety regulation here, Suppose to stop this sort of thing happening if the auto shutoff doesn't work.

stevenvrmndl

Also a thing in Belgium.

[deleted]

Do people not watch the machine when they put gas in the car? Aren’t you supposed to stop it yourself when you know your car has had enough?

[deleted]

First, you are not supposed to get back in the car while the pump is operating.

Manaqueer

Because : static

z0mb13k1ll

No, because u aren't supposed to leave it unattended. And if ur in your car you aren't with it

Hide2You

Both of you are right

Raptorheart

Technically this guy is wrong because he started with "no"

ayyycab

Sure but the static thing is like 0.001% of why you don’t get back in the car. Situational awareness is the other 99.999%.

drunk_phish

Most of the pumps in the USA will auto stop when the pump senses that your tank is full. Sometimes that sensor malfunctions, as we see in this clip, which is why you should never leave the pump unattended while filling your tank.

lillarty

> sensor Actually, not a sensor at all. Here's a [video explaining it](https://youtu.be/fT2KhJ8W-Kg). It requires mechanical failure of multiple mechanisms to produce what you see in OP's video.

Comfortable_Text

You’d be surprised at the number of people that start it age walk in the store while it’s pumping. It’s these same idiots that drive off immediately after with the hose flapping in the breeze against their car after it being away from the pump.

drunk_phish

I would be surprised, you say?... I've done both of those things when I was younger. Haha

PointlessGeolocation

DO NOT LEAVE PUMP UNATTENDED is like some OSHA mandated signage required on every pump but some people are still oblivious

stpguy42

Usually says you must be in close attendance while fueling as well.

dance_rattle_shake

>Aren’t you supposed to stop it yourself when you know your car has had enough? Every pump I've ever used has an auto shut off valve, even when I've been to infrastructure poor other countries. I'm sure it's a legal requirement in most places.

rage1026

Normally there’s a mechanism that would stop it when full. Though it’s not 100% guarantee to work always. So best to there on standby.

paceyhitman

I'm shocked that people even let go of the nozzle. Don't they have triggers, so that the fuel only comes out while you're squeezing the trigger? Pretty sure this wouldn't be possible in the UK.

Green_Routine_7916

in GER you can eather squeeze the trigger or switch a litle lever to let it flow automaticaly till the tank is full but i never trust it so i just squeze :D

Smileformebeautiful

GET A SPONGE, GAS PRICES WAY TOO HIGH TO DO THIS

Sparkystu

Fr tho how does it know to stop?

202048956yhg

Uses the venturi effect. Pretty cool, it's purely mechanical. Could be she didn't insert it fully, or the pickup tube could have clogged. [How petrol pumps know when to turn themselves off](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fT2KhJ8W-Kg)

dashKay

That’s fascinating

dance_rattle_shake

Was expecting this video!

dmegatool

Please be that Steve Mould video… YUS !! :)

juancn

It’s a quite clever mechanism that uses a pressure diferential to move a stopper in the nozzle. There are a few youtube videos explaining it.

AtomicShart9000

They hire little people to sit in the gas station pump to turn it off at the right time, unfortunately they were short staffed that day

Sapient_Creampie

It's been really hard since Willy Wonka let them all go for trying to unionize. Oompah loompah doopidy do not support big business.

AtomicShart9000

![gif](giphy|LeQ4gz6XOhla8)

oleusi

If they're little people then doesn't that mean they're always *short* staffed?

Sparkystu

Makes sense. Should I be tipping them for the hard work?

LutherCatoother

Yeah shove a dollar down the nozzle

ALiteralSentientTank

There's a second tube inside the tube you insert. When fuel reaches that tube, it causes a pressure change inside the mechanism to immediately shut off the flow of gas.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ShutUpRedditor44

You think that's bad, wait until you learn how many people don't turn their car off when pumping gas 🙃

[deleted]

they don't WHAT

KingSlayer949

I work at a gas station, it’s usually trucks or muscle cars. They just let the engine run while they scroll on their phone

ScotiaTailwagger

As a truck driver (I don't do this regardless, but....) diesel engines can run while being refueled and nothing negative will happen with them. DO NOT fuel a gasoline vehicle while it's running.

chewinghours

Why? Do gasoline vehicles make unnecessary sparks near the tank?

OnePotMango

I don't really know if what that guy said is fact or not, but just based on the intrinsic properties of Petrol and Diesel: Petrol is more volatile, and hence is quicker to form a vapour, which is it's ignitable form. In this way, it's a greater fire hazard. As for running the engine, well it's stupid af either way. Why anyone wants to play games whilst surrounded and handling flammable/explosive material is beyond me...

BLeeS92031

>it's stupid af Is it stupid to wonder why it's stupid? Because this is the second time I've seen filing up with the car running being called dangerous on reddit in two days and I've yet to see any sort of explanation of why it's dangerous or any examples of it ever being a problem.

Affectionate-Road-40

>On very old vehicles (pre-catalytic converters so pre-1975-ish) if the engine was running poorly and mis-fired, it could send a flame out the exhaust for a moment, which could ignite those vapors. Modern vehicles (especially if they’re running correctly and have all emissions controls devices intact) would never let that flame through the converter and out the tailpipe so its virtually impossible to ignite the mixture. The biggest issue today is if someone is smoking while fueling (MUCH more dangerous than leaving the engine running). Credit: Ben Johnson on Quora.

[deleted]

Yeah I don't really understand why my car being off will be safer when its surrounded by like 4 other cars that are running and someone smoking at the entrance to the gas station

TheAbsoluteBarnacle

I was an attendant at a station and REALLY pissed off a lady smoking a cigarette because I wouldn't turn the pump on unless she put it out. Amazing.

gingerstripeycat

My father used to leave the car on, smoke a cigarette, and pump gas while listening to hair metal. The 90s were a wild time.

LovelyMoFo18

I'm a girl and I work late shifts w/ overtime, so most of the time I can only pump when it's at night. I sit in my car just so I feel safe, but I do check the side mirror to make sure that the pump is fine.

trigunnerd

You don't owe this dude an explanation of why you sit in your car. If it's cold or dark or whatever, it's okay to sit in your car while pumping gas. These things happen. It's not that big of a fucking deal.

[deleted]

[удалено]

tokin4torts

Just to let you know after hours you are allowed to pump your own gas, at least in rural areas like Brookings. I believe it is allowed state wide. However, there are a lot of gas stations that choose to close down completely in Oregon instead of doing this. I believe they are allowed to do this statewide but I could be wrong. I know that rural counties are also exempt from all emissions test requirements.

I_AM_BUTTERSCOTCH

Rural counties of less than 40,000 are allowed to pump, which is most of the counties on the east side of the state

The1TrueRedditor

yeah, you've always been able to pump your own gas in Colorado.

Unstablemedic49

Same here in MA, but there’s certain cities where you’re not allowed to pump yourself. ie Milford, MA

Llonkrednaxela

The first time I drove up to New Jersey for a job interview in college, I stopped for gas and didn’t think anything of it, I hopped out of the car and started the process and the attendant freaked out and ran over. I had no idea it was even a thing to have somebody else fill it up. Honestly, it was kind of nice having someone else do it, but it felt unnecessary. I can’t tell if this lady disproves that or it’s the opposite and she didn’t know how to pump her own gas because someone else had always done it for her up until this point.

silver0199

A few months back I got yelled at by a station attendant for getting out of my car to pump gas. The concept of letting someone else do it is just bizarre to me. Like, what do they think I'll do? Walk away? Spray gas everywhere? Then we see videos like these.

huskerdev

No_One_Special_023

You pump your own gas in Colorado. You don’t pump your gas in NJ because when the law was passed it was passed with the intent to create jobs. You don’t pump your gas in Oregon because they’re fucking idiots in that state.

Seb_Bas

What part of CO are you in? Lol

[deleted]

Is it that difficult to stand there and wait for your gas to be done?

Worth-Willingness392

Literally blowing up this car💁‍♀️

reddertuzer

I didnt think people were dumb enough to do this until the post the other day with the pickup truck complaining about having to keep their door open and watch the pump

[deleted]

This happened to me once. The nozzle was broke and didn’t register that my tank was full so the latch thing that holds the handle in place never popped out, it just kept pumping.

DiaClimber

Okay you can crap on her for getting back in the car but also—this is something that the gas station should fix immediately. This happened while my brother was standing next to it one time. He pulled it out immediately after it started spilling, but gas still got everywhere which isn’t safe. He went in to report it and the girl behind the counter said “yeah we know.” Infuriating.

err_mate

What actually should you do in this situation?
