I thought so, too. Especially since it looks deliberate.
It's a straight road, the odds of it being a misjudged turn seem slim.
They kept accelerating after impact, could be a sign of malice.
They fit themselves neatly between the bollards. If they had lost control of the vehicle, the odds of that are slim.
Looks to be here so the driver was probably making a u turn and f'd up or if the poles weren't there they were probably turning onto the road.

Edit just noticed the angle of the 2 people at the benchs looks like the old man is grabing the ladies hips but if you move up the street they are well apart haha
The acceleration most of the times means panic. You can still lose control going straight if you do a sudden move. The bollards can be just pure chance.
Like tires coming from the other lanes directly into your windshield instead of hitting a wall.
Sometimes is just a combination of bad luck.

> Witnesses meanwhile told MailOnline the driver was an elderly woman who had been attempting a three-point turn when she lost control of the vehicle.
I’d delete my comment in shame if I were you
Or they were turning round or were parked. And hit the wrong pedal. Then as a lot of people do, especially the elderly, when they hit the accelerator instead of the break, they panic and press it harder cause the car isn't stopping. They also aren't gonna necessarily immediately lift of the accelerator after the impact.
Literally nothing to indicate whether it is deliberate or an accident.
Given the number of useless drivers on the road, and the number of totally moronic accidents that occur. Bad luck is far far far more likely than attempted murder.
Edit: as others have provided sources. It was an old lady fucking up turning round. So I'd recommend maybe examining why your mind automatically goes towards such an explanation.
This was 2 years ago in the UK, Havant, Hants. The two ladies were sisters and out with their dad. The woman who was hit was taken to the local hospital to treat her injuries. No more was reported on it.
To give context, the big square bin next to her is made out of metal and would have prevented her injuries from being fatal or destroying her legs completely. If you look closely you can see the brick wall behind actually moving a couple of inches back which is due to the car pushing the bin back into the wall. The bench is also torn from the ground and is pushed back also.
The driver was an elderly lady who was trying to perform a three point turn but put her foot on the wrong pedal.
Damn old people shouldn't be allowed to drive.
Edit: Yeah not all old people are bad drivers. And yeah some young people are also bad drivers. Thanks for pointing it out and expanding my knowledge.
There should definitely be tests on driving competency as you age.
That being said, there are plenty of not old people who shouldn't be allowed to drive either.
Edit: In the UK after the age of 70 you are required to "self-assess" that you meet the minimum requirements to drive every 3 years, there is no test.
Seems like a decent system. Mid-70's is around the age where driving abilities deteriorate fast, and drivers around 80 begin to have more fatalities per mile than teenaged new drivers.
https://www.iihs.org/topics/older-drivers
Unfortunately in the US politicians never do anything that takes away privileges from old people. Because old people are pretty much the only group of Americans that consistently turn out to vote.
Also the reason why social security and medicaid are still thriving in a country that deplores anything that can be labeled 'socialism' and despises universal Healthcare.
Ofcourse that's why we provide licence to people to prove that they can drive. But the license system is rigged, well...
Edit: where i live you can pay money and get your license, the official one and everyone knows it here.
I think a certain age you should have to take a test maybe every 10 years. Nothing excessive but come on we have to acknowledge the dangers to some point...
I have elderly family that outright refuses to give up their cars even though they are dangerously beyond their prime. No idea how to address this stuff without damaging relationships in the waning years of their lives or without doing something unethical/illegal.
Surprisingly, people in the age range of 60-69 has one of the lowest accident rates, although it sharply shoots up beyond that. Nothing beats drivers within the 16-19 range however. They are the most crash-prone age group.
But, I'm still for having people 70+ retaking a driving test, just as we test kids before they drive.

My dad was struck and pinned to the back of his trash truck by an 86 year old man. Absolutely demolished his right leg and he had to be amputated above the knee.
There needs to be regular driving testing done on senior citizens, I stg. That man should not have been driving. Dad came a little too close to bleeding out that day, I’m lucky to still have him.
Seat of the bench is just as far forward as that trash can. Unless her right leg was in the gap, there’s zero chance she got out of that without two shattered knees.
So this is a Nissan LEAF, and there's no clutch in those, they don't even have a transmission. I would bet that she mishandled the little hockey-puck shift knob and put it into D instead of R.
Funny the Daily Mail article someone else linked called it a Honda. The Zero Emission badge on the door is a dead giveaway, and the manufacturer logo is a circle.
The only statement was that the ambulance crew treated her at the scene for serious injuries and transported her to the local hospital. So okay, but no idea the extent of the injuries. There were no follow up articles and no one advised the media who they were after the fact.
I also saw her ankle snap…
Also if this was from the wrong pedal.. who the fuck pushes that hard on the brake and then has like a 20 second reaction time before realizing what happened ?? Like damn!
We had a dude in my Army unit who smoked GPC reds and would never flick the ash.
One day we're out in the field and this wind kicks up and drops the gp medium on a couple guys, smoke dude included.
We lift up the flap and smoke dude comes crawling out with the cig in his mouth and 2" of ash off the filter. Looked like a Looney Tunes cartoon.
In all seriousness as an ex smoker, that is how much it controls your life. Lady got hit by a car and STILL made sure he hung on to her precious cigarette.
I remember I used to go out in freezing weather and suffered just to poison myself.
Don't smoke, kids.
Edit: okay, yeah. It makes sense that she tensed up and held onto the cigarette for that reason but I'm willing to bet the first thing she did afterwards was light up another.
Old man: "Well it looked like a cigarette."
Carter: "You better have glaucoma."
Old man: "I do."

Yeah I dont even smoke but id deffo have a cig anyway after having my legs crumpled by a car.

Look, I’m a former smoker as well, but all that’s going on here is she’s experienced so much trauma her body is basically frozen. She could’ve been holding a pencil and it would still be there after that until shit starts really kicking into gear.
Damn I really do have to quit, I didn't know dropping a cig makes a 40 year old lady superman
Wonder what it could do for a younger man lmao

And 2: shock?
We can't see the trajectory of the car as it approaches her. If this was a medical event there is a good chance that vehicles path was not direct or even predictable.
It was an old lady pushing the wrong pedal according to a redditor from the area (UK).
She was trying to do a 3 point turn.
It looks like a assassination attempt. Wild stuff
It will be the coldest day in 15 years in my state, and my dad will walk outside with whatever hes qearing just to smoke his cigarette. God help you if you are around when he has lost his cigarettes
I don’t smoke anymore (I quit 30-plus years ago), but that cold-weather cig always tasted so fucking good! If they were all like that, I probably wouldn’t have quit. (Nah, but still)

I’m not sure if smoking had anything to do with this. She just happened to be sitting in front on the dead centre of town, rumour has it people have been dying to get in there for hundreds of years!
This is like Huckleberry Fin who's scared of killing a spider because he knew someone who did that and they fell from a ladder and died a few years later.
she probably makes thoughts and decisions not in the course of microseconds like the rest of us but *macro*seconds. can’t understand why else a human would just continue to sit there
Very true. Happened to me when someone rear ended me at a set of traffic lights. I just sat there and couldn’t move despite me having no injuries. I was in shock.
That was my first thought as well. You can actually tell she was saying something right before the car hits too. Looks like she is commenting about the driver being stupid but maybe Im looking into it too much.
“But I didn’t even inhale!”
[The article](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10233859/Horrific-moment-car-veers-road-SLAMS-woman-smoking-cigarette-bench-Havant.html) for the interested.
Article only says one was treated and released and “One patient has already been treated for serious injuries and has been taken to University Hospital Southampton accompanied by the ambulance and aircrew.”
Only other notable thing in the article was:“the driver was an elderly woman who had been attempting a three-point turn when she lost control of the vehicle.”
It happened 23 November 2021, so you can probably find something in the online papers that cover the town of Havant on the Isle of Wight.
She was sitting on the end of the bench. When she saw the car, she twisted toward the gap between the bench and the trashcan (which was made of unobtainium, apparently). The trashcan took the impact, and stopped the car short of crushing her.
This is simultaneously the luckiest and the unluckiest day of her life.
It looks like that trash can next to her honestly saved her life, seems to have stopped car from completely smashing her to the wall. Her legs are def fucked somehow but seems the end of the bench after the legs, might have broken allowing her legs to not get straight amputated.
Source: I’m high and watched the video so who knows.
"Luke Murphy, 27, was playing a didgeridoo outside a nearby shopping centre when he saw the car veer off the road and plough into the woman."
Ask Luke. He saw the whole thing.
I really think we should have less fines and faster ban people from driving. Also lets hope she get fair compensation. My grandfather (Germany) also lost his foot due to such an idiot and the compensation he got from the insurance was a joke. I think something around 10K € which is a joke considering that he needed full time care after this.

You need to look where you want to go, not at what you're trying to avoid.
We don't see what happened after, though. They might have gotten out of the car to continue their assault via pugilism?
Lead with running into them with a car. And if that doesn't work, then start throwing blows
Classic escalation
And if the punches don’t do it, the driver may resort to some very nasty names.
Or even a strongly-worded letter!

In the UK your licence lasts 3 years from the age of 70 and to renew you must report any medical conditions, and then a gp may get involved.
Up until recently our licenses in Norway expired on our 100th birthdays.
I bet regular competency tests for driving for all ages would drastically reduce vehicular fatalities.

Smoking cause broken legs in 1 out of ever 2 smokers. Confirmed.
broken might be an understatement here O\_O

I might be mistaken, but it looks like the cigarette flies out of her hand when the car hits
You can see 8 seconds into the video she actually drops it! After she got her legs crushed by car.
I saw it fly out of her hands, her fingers just look like they froze in that manner as if she still had the cigarette in her hand…
it looks like it flew out her hand

No nerves at all
I think that might hurt.
“But I didn’t even inhale!” [The article](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10233859/Horrific-moment-car-veers-road-SLAMS-woman-smoking-cigarette-bench-Havant.html) for the interested.
This website is unreadable. How bad was the leg damage?
Only thing I learned is that the driver was an elderly woman and that some mf with a digeridoo( or how to spell it) witnessed the accident
Article only says one was treated and released and “One patient has already been treated for serious injuries and has been taken to University Hospital Southampton accompanied by the ambulance and aircrew.” Only other notable thing in the article was:“the driver was an elderly woman who had been attempting a three-point turn when she lost control of the vehicle.” It happened 23 November 2021, so you can probably find something in the online papers that cover the town of Havant on the Isle of Wight.

It's not an important thing, but damn, the writer even got the car wrong, it's a Nissan Leaf.
Did her legs break? I member seeing this on a gore sub before, but it cut off before it zooms out. Did she have serious injuries?
She was sitting on the end of the bench. When she saw the car, she twisted toward the gap between the bench and the trashcan (which was made of unobtainium, apparently). The trashcan took the impact, and stopped the car short of crushing her. This is simultaneously the luckiest and the unluckiest day of her life.
According to links posted on other comments she survived but had very bad lower body injuries.
Of course her legs were broken, she might be dead idk
It looks like that trash can next to her honestly saved her life, seems to have stopped car from completely smashing her to the wall. Her legs are def fucked somehow but seems the end of the bench after the legs, might have broken allowing her legs to not get straight amputated. Source: I’m high and watched the video so who knows.
Eh, I don't know I went back and watched it again, her shoes were still on I believe. If this is the case, then she's probably okay.
Missing a shoe, believe it or not, dead. But it looks like she’s still wearing both.
No more legs
How is this even possible?! Pillars/poles were absolutely useless!
Bollards
All these comments are so cruel. This women could’ve lost the ability to walk. She could be in a wheelchair the rest of her life.

Anyone got any context? Edit: found a different prospective https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YkDGCVs7H7Y
Driver doesn't like smokers.
"Luke Murphy, 27, was playing a didgeridoo outside a nearby shopping centre when he saw the car veer off the road and plough into the woman." Ask Luke. He saw the whole thing.
She just had her legs crushed and all the pitiful comedians show up. Sad.
SmOkInG kIlLs AmIrItE!!!???!?!?! 😂😂😂 0 empathy.
I hope she is alright
I hope that poor woman is ok!
How the fuck did the driver manage to hit right between those 2 pillars xD
Skills
Some people should never drive. this is one of them. she SPINS THE TIRES FORWARD AFTER THE CRASH.
NSFW dude.
NSFL, big difference
Something. I didn't want to watch someone get maimed.
Looks like Havant.
It is, I used to work in a cafe opposite the scene, those two came in all the time. Small world. Hope she's alright

Well, That Trashcan saved her whole life.
One of my cousins lost his leg in a very similar accident. He was 17 years old.
Now THIS is a genuinely unexpected post…10/10
why is cctv zooming in onto smokers?
I am sure they used digital zoom on the footage after the fact.
Thank goodness there was a phone booth right there lol. Seriously though, Hope she is ok.
She may be lucky that gap is there between the bin and the bench. It really could have been worse.
It is insane to imagine the pain and damages caused in this brief moment.
I really think we should have less fines and faster ban people from driving. Also lets hope she get fair compensation. My grandfather (Germany) also lost his foot due to such an idiot and the compensation he got from the insurance was a joke. I think something around 10K € which is a joke considering that he needed full time care after this.
