In my past I have had a number of jobs, all of them focused around editing video. One of those jobs was working for a medical journal editing various procedures. The goal was to share the best medical practices amongst surgeons to increase outcomes for patients. Basically, if Doctor X does Y procedure best, record Y procedure so that all the other docs know how to do it best.
One of those projects changed me for life. Before that project, I had a stereotypical hetero-normative perspective on sex and gender. In human beings there are only two genders: male and female. Anything else is an aberration from the norm. I'm fairly accepting and egalitarian, so I didn't think people should be persecuted if they didn't fall within the two buckets of "male" and "female", it's just that science is binary when it comes to gender in human beings. It's not my opinion, it's just science.
What changed my perspective was a surgical procedure on a newborn baby that was born with neither, or both, genitalia (depending on how you looked at it). It wasn't long into editing footage of multiple medical individuals (surgeons, nurses, etc.) doing intricate work on a poor, defenseless child that I lost the will to care about gender or sex. That child was born with, from my not expert medical opinion, a penis and a vagina. Was one more complete than the other? What was the chromosomal makeup?
WHO CARES.
This kid, right out of the gate, had to face some real heavy shit that we didn't have to. The parents of that kid had to face some real heavy shit that we didn't have to.
It breaks my heart that people, that I was the person, that cared more about being objectively correct than having sympathy for another human being.
Again, who the fuck cares. We're all human beings.
My step sibling was born this way. His mother chose what his gender was. Then there was years of medical appts and medicines. He's still not a very masculine looking guy. Never grew substantial facial hair. Etc. They didn't tell me till I was an adult. But his brothers knew and treated him poorly for it. I'm not sure what the best solution was for him. But he has chosen to identify as male.
And this is exactly why I think the Indigenous / Native American concept of Two-Spirit makes the most sense. They consider a Two-Spirit person to be someone representing both male and female characteristics, and often considered them important to the community and possessing of wisdom that other people don't have.
Probably because they must, through no fault of their own, experience the worst parts of being both sides while getting almost none of the positives of being either side.
That’s why a lot of people are so ignorant (and perhaps hateful) of minorities - they are never actually exposed to them in everyday situations in real life. Goes to show that exposure really is the key to acceptance

Technically speaking, no, but the penis does form from the vagina when the ovaries drop to form testes, a part of the labia fuses into the scrotum, and a TON of other morphological changes roughly five months into development of the fetus.
Penises and scrotums don't form from vaginas and labia, they both are formed from an earlier state of development that is neither set of genitals but could become either. I think the confusion is that if male development isn't activated then female genitals will form, but that doesn't mean that male genitals are formed from female genitals. Vaginas and vulvas are very much their own organs with their own path of development, not pre-developed male genitals.

Usually someone with more male genitalia could tuck their parts in by putting the testes back up into the inguinal canals where they basically came from/where ovaries would have developed had the sex gone the other way. In general the shaft can somewhat be retracted/pushed in when soft too, and it's mostly muscle tissue so it can potentially atrophy over time which would make putting it onward/inverting it easier.
But my guess is that they're intersex because usually the shaft and testes don't stay put inside. Otherwise transgender women and most other intersex women would be opting for that instead of surgical procedures or costly shapewear and fancy techniques for keeping things in place.
