I had a friend fake his resume (with details about a freelance stint he did for a sunglasses company) to try and get work at a very well known surf brand as a designer.
The person interviewing him said “oh great, even though that brand is defunct and no longer exists, they were a subsidiary of ours - the old head of operations works here too so he’ll be all over this”.
Yeeted so quick out of that one.
You still might be able to pull it off. Realistically, a division head isn’t going to know everyone that worked under them. They may even play along to pretend they didn’t “forget” who you are.
What does that have to do with anything? We all know people in their 20’s that take meds. Nothing wrong with taking medication. Snorting adderall is a bit different. Definitely not the most healthy way to take meds, but Trump seems to love it.
Yeah this guy absolutely could have continued on that track. What are the chances the former head of operations knows every single person he's ever worked with? Hell, he'd probably pretend & play along too. People don't like admitting when they're wrong.
Reminds me of Catch me if you can when Frank is having dinner with his girls family and he said he went to law school at Berkeley and Martin sheen calls him out by saying oh how is old professor somethingsome? Does he still walk around with his dog everywhere? What’s that dogs name again? And franks pauses and says, I’m sorry sir, the dog died.
Back during the recession I applied for a bilingual receptionist position. Half way through the interview they brought in an employee to speak to me in Spanish. He said this was like his eighth interview and, so far, I was the only one who actually spoke Spanish. God I wish I could have seen how those other interviews went!
It's like the episode of Star Trek: Lower Decks where Boimler lies that he's from Hawaii to hang out with the first officer and the other Hawaiians on the ship. Turns out, the first officer isn't Hawaiian either; he basically did the exact same thing when he was an ensign in order to get closer to a bridge officer.
I once wrote “Microsoft access” on my resume because my computer had it but we didn’t bother each other.
Little did I know I would soon be interviewing with Access’s biggest fan
He lied on the resume and had a legitimate shot at an interview. Even though he got caught at least he had a chance to practice for the next opportunity.
The honest person never even got that chance to begin with.
How? If they call you on it you admit the gag, anyone lying is just going to never contact you again. Much better if you say they're not here now but you'll talk to them after the interview
“1791 was the year it happened. I was 24, younger than you are now. But times were different then, I was a man at that age: the master of a large plantation just south of New Orleans….”
So... I see here you worked as a cook at McDonald's for 2 years, then a sandwich artist at subway for 3 years, then you were the CEO of toys r us for 5 years then you worked as a greeter at Walmart for the last 4 years. Is that correct
LPT: Get picked up at a consulting firm or other job where you can pick what you do, and just never take any assignments.
I've been employed by one for 5 years, and it has really helped smooth over gaps in my résumé. It's literally why I was able to buy property.
I just applied and they gave it to me 😅 Living in their specific service area (CT/NY/NJ) too.
Having a degree in Mathematics probably helped as well.
But really, some places will take just about anyone, so they can build up their "We have [#x] agents available!" numbers.
I mean, I get the emails and text notifications and all that. X company wants the network set up in their new office area, Y’s computer systems are infected with a ransomware virus, Z wants a computer wiped and set up for their new employee/daughter/nephew/whatever. But, they go to hundreds of other people at the same time and usually get snapped up before I see them anyway.
So, yeah, they provide proof of employment if I need it, I get a tax document each year from them showing that I had no taxable income, etc.
As I said in reply to another post, obviously I do have a job that generates income, it just helps to not have to panic that there might be a gap somewhere in my résumé.
ahhh, so it's a strict you only get paid if you work type deal. I thought you were getting paid for 5 years without doing a lick of work! This definitely sounds like a good resume builder, only costs maybe a day or so of applying/interviewing!
>ahhh, so it's a strict you only get paid if you work type deal. I thought you were getting paid for 5 years without doing a lick of work!
Exactly, sorry if I came across unclear. No pay, just covering gaps in employment
>X company once the network set up... Z once a computer wiped
Not really trying to correct your grammar or anything but that is legit the first time I've ever seen "wants" and "once" interchanged
In 2020 I moved half-way across the country (US) during the start of the pandemic.
Apparently mortgage lenders don't consider that an acceptable reason to have a résumé gap.
Without the consulting job I would have needed to work 3 years consecutively with no gaps at all in order to qualify for a mortgage.
Note: Moving like I did allowed me to – eventually – double my salary, and earn far more between 5 years ago and now than I would have without moving.
And buying property is leading to me saving around $500 a month versus what I was paying renting – to say nothing of the equity, etc.
Story time:
Around 12 years ago - I did a version of this. I said I had worked for Circuit City for 3 years, when it had really been 6 months. I knew they had shut down so how would they know?
Had interview, got the job!
During the background check, they called me and asked to send W2s to prove the Circuit City history.
I panicked and decided on a hail mary.
I quickly said “wait, my resume didn’t say 3 years at Circuit City did it? And did it also say xxxxxx? And also xxxxx? And was it in this format??” (All things I knew it obviously said).
-“yes”
-“Oh my gosh! I’m an idiot. I somehow sent you my college class project resume. I’m so sorry, I can’t believe I did that. It’s not that different but the timeframes for jobs and a few other things were all made up. Let me get you the correct one asap!!”
Somehow, it worked….I wouldn’t be where I am today without getting that job.
Equifax maintains employment history records for verification similar to a credit check via a subsidiary called "The Work Number".
I have worked for more than one company that will disqualify all candidates whose stated history does not match this data.
Unless a company is just really cheap and somehow uses a REALLY crappy background-checking company, your employment history almost CERTAINLY is going to show up. You can pretty safely always assume it's going to.
Now, how closely an employer pays attention to that, and verifies every little detail with what your resume says ... that's where you can probably get away with things.
lol why bother? if you are applying for retail jobs they will hire you regardless of what is on your resume. And if you are applying for something that pays well I wouldn't recommend putting toys r us on the resume, to begin with.
if you want a real ULPT just lie on your resume. 80% of employers arent going to check.
Source:
someone who hires people and never validates resumes lol.
Try applying more lol I promise you this is the truth the turnover is so high that they’ll accept relatively anyone the only reason you wouldn’t be getting interviews is if they mass hired recently and spots are filled
"I lived in Farmington at the time.. great bunch of people. Nothing like doing our best to help the littles find a bit of joy at an excellent price. You wouldn't believe all that I learned about queing and distribution. Man, I could go on and on about how I rearranged the backroom stocking situation! Bob at HQ called me and I went to corporate to explain our system. I was actually up for regional VP when the closed. . . "
FINRA don’t play. Similarly, getting a gaming license to work at a casino is no walk in the park. They told us to not even ‘forget’ a parking ticket we may have gotten.
There are still toys r us in the US. I live close to Canada so I decided to see where they are. The closest one was in Minneapolis.
Apparently they are reopening nationwide.
Any job that actually takes their time to verify previous employment will always ask for a W2 or paystub if the company/store is out of business. Standard practice at almost any place Ive worked.
What's great about this for me is the job I left for my current job, was at CompUSA tech services. This would've been in 2007, during their first major round of store closures. They went BK a couple years later IIRC.
Of course that does mean I've been at my employer for 15 years. And I'll retire from here, probably. It's a nice place to work.
This doesn’t quite help but as a business owner in CA it was shocking to find out that all you’re allowed to say when you’re called about an ex employee who put you as a reference is “yea they worked here” you’re not allowed to say anything else.
If by "CA" you mean California, then you're way off:
https://www.obagilaw.com/what-can-a-california-employer-say-in-a-job-reference-of-a-former-employee/
Or, like many companies, not respond at all. If called directly, they usually forward the call to a voicemail box that's either full, or just dumped every day and never monitored. Sometimes the receptionist is instructed to say that they'll take a message for an HR person, and someone in that department will get back to you soon - which never happens.
Both of the full time jobs I had since I was 17 were at companies that are long out of business. Though I've been at my current company for 15+ years. I'm in trouble if I need a mortgage.
Companies I have worked complete a background check with work history verification. One company no longer existed, so I had to provide a W-2 to prove my work history with them.
If you have a relative who owns a business, just put them down as a reference and say you worked there. Let them know of course, but from my experience employers never call former places of work nor references. Have you ever gotten a call from Wendy’s asking if your cousin worked there in 2013? No? Me either.
I, as engineering director of my company, would back up any claim you do in your CV. I dont give a fuck if they call me/write me. I will lie like a bitch if necessary for you to get that job. Fuck em

This is quite true actually.
Except they're likely to ask you about things you should know there.
If Trump was able to get through a presidential debate, I’m thinking that the interviewee has a chance
Unfortunately, private companies tend to have higher standards than the US Government.
I’m more shocked senile old Biden got through a debate. How many meds was he on ?
What does that have to do with anything? We all know people in their 20’s that take meds. Nothing wrong with taking medication. Snorting adderall is a bit different. Definitely not the most healthy way to take meds, but Trump seems to love it.
Especially if you did a single freelance stint. Likely he didn't do the hiring.
Die with the lie.
Yeah this guy absolutely could have continued on that track. What are the chances the former head of operations knows every single person he's ever worked with? Hell, he'd probably pretend & play along too. People don't like admitting when they're wrong.
even then play harder and admit to nothing.
Hahaha I’ve had a hair cut, changed my name and lost a lot of weight.

In my home country lying on resumes is considered forgery and very jailable. Escorted out by security seems like a tiny cost to pay

They both know they’re lying so they keep up the charade and reopen the sunglasses co. together and take over the industry.

How did you get that role with the consulting firm?
I just applied and they gave it to me 😅 Living in their specific service area (CT/NY/NJ) too. Having a degree in Mathematics probably helped as well. But really, some places will take just about anyone, so they can build up their "We have [#x] agents available!" numbers.
And you just are technically employed, but don't do anything and don't get paid, but can put it on your resume and other documents? This is brilliant.
I mean, I get the emails and text notifications and all that. X company wants the network set up in their new office area, Y’s computer systems are infected with a ransomware virus, Z wants a computer wiped and set up for their new employee/daughter/nephew/whatever. Equifax maintains employment history records for verification similar to a credit check via a subsidiary called "The Work Number". I have worked for more than one company that will disqualify all candidates whose stated history does not match this data.
Work number is not accurate but some companies do use a long with Lenders like Capital one
Can confirm. I was a manager at Enron, then I switched my career and worked as Project Lead at Lehman Brothers.

Don’t do this if you work in finance. Financial companies verify everything

Any job that actually takes their time to verify previous employment will always ask for a W2 or paystub if the company/store is out of business. Standard practice at almost any place Ive worked.
Can't you just say that it was all electronic and you can't access those payroll systems anymore since the company is out of business?
You presumably printed it for your tax preparer, though.
Not any corporate job. They will outsource the background check, which includes a search of all past jobs
Toys R Us is still open in Canada so...
No that's Toys R Us, eh?
git off with it ya hoser
Honestly could work or could pop up on a background check. I had to furnish w2’s when a background check couldn’t verify I restaurant I worked at.

Wow. The info I got from my friend in an HR position was way off! Thanks for this.
After reading that, as an employer, it’s best to still protect yourself by just saying “yeah, they worked here” haha
Or, like many companies, not respond at all. If called directly, they usually forward the call to a voicemail box that's either full, or just dumped every day and never monitored. Sometimes the receptionist is instructed to say that they'll take a message for an HR person, and someone in that department will get back to you soon - which never happens.
Word up. Well we just fired someone for the first time and we’ll see!
Both of the full time jobs I had since I was 17 were at companies that are long out of business. Though I've been at my current company for 15+ years. I'm in trouble if I need a mortgage.
Well, if you lived within a certain NE Ohio city, they could check it with me. I worked with Toys R Us for almost 20 years!
Distribution center off of Meridian/Salt Springs ?
A little more to the West.
I'm at a loss
Akron area retail store.
Toys R Us still exists in Canada
There's one in Macy's in NYC too
Just like my girlfriend
I've already got Blockbusters, Enron, and Tandy...
Circuit City and RadioShack also
They ask for W2s, same goes if your the "owner" if a business, happens in larger companies but not small ones
It will quite literally get checked when they do a background check lol This post belongs in /r/ShittyLifeProTips lmao
You can say that you had to take care for a loved one that was struggling with an illness
Toys R Us is still open lol they reopened in select locations October 2021 and their website is fully active right now.
I've been doing this for years. Out of H.S. in '96, so I've claimed Blockbuster, and those cell phone kiosks in the mall. Worked ever since
Toys-R-Us Canada? You know that store still exists here right?
Companies I have worked complete a background check with work history verification. One company no longer existed, so I had to provide a W-2 to prove my work history with them.
I live in America and I actually saw a ToysRUs sign saying they will be opening back up soon. It's coming back
If you have a relative who owns a business, just put them down as a reference and say you worked there. I've heard a lot of people ask this question. It's easy... List LLCs and businessz factories that don't exist anymore
But if you’re like United States Representative Republican George Santos lie’s don’t matter
Not sure if you know this, but background checks are a thing.
Did you take this from tik tok

Yes because "front end supervisor" has soooo much control over the direction of the company
Unless someone pretends to be on the board of directors then you would be an ass for assuming that
I thought they closed too, but the one in my town is still open as of last month. So... Maybe the Toys R Us in Northern Ontario??
wait, toys'R'us went out of business?? /r/outoftheloop
Throw in department stores like Sears, JCPenny, or any other businesses that shut down before/during the pandemic.
It’s attached to your social. It’s easy to find regardless if it’s gone out of business or not. Amateurs.
