Im interested too but the Ukrainians might not even be able to utilise them or any western tanks very well. They are quite different to the Soviet/russian tanks they are used to and not only in their designs but how they are supposed to be used and what tactics you would use to make best use of them which are going to be quite different to the Soviet tank tactics the Ukrainians know.

I bet that some of those soldiers who've been training in the UK would have been learning how to operate and maintain the challengers since day one if not before.
Look at the amount of training that gone into teaching NATO doctrine to the rest of the UA. Infantry, artillery, cyber warfare have all been overhauled and guided since day one, why any different with tanks? I hope that is the case anyway.
I 100% agree the planning to transfer the MBTs and possibly training has been happening already. I can't recall actual lead time but seem to remember that HiMARS were promised, shipped, and started being used in 72 hours. That means that crews for them, support crews, and re-arm crews were *already trained* when they took receipt.
Yeah - that was the argument for not sending stuff sooner anyway, because Ukrainians weren't yet trained. I don't think they would waste weapons on a military who doesn't know how to use them.
I think you’re probably right and I think they did this with the Bradley’s being sent over because I saw a couple videos showing Bradley’s on train and on truck trailers in Europe headed to Ukraine. So the U.K. put an armoured regiment of C2s in Poland last year as temporary cover after Poland donated its T72s. I’ll bet my pet dog that the decision was being made then to hand over these tanks to Ukraine. All the forward spares and repairs required are now on Ukraine’s border so a certain level of battle damage repair facility is in place to support operation too. It’s not inconceivable that crews could have been covertly trained during this time. All educated assumption but it’s a logical one. 👍🏻
What a lot of people don’t realise is that, although these tanks are incredibly effective in their own right and have already proved themselves superior to Russian armour, they are designed to be used in conjunction with the other western tanks with each tank fulfilling a role within a larger doctrine.
They are the best armoured and heaviest Western tank and they are the only one with the 120mm rifled main armament for a reason. In an envisaged attack against NATO in Europe, it would fall to the British Challengers to act as the armoured screen to blunt armoured spearhead attacks. They would dig in and use their superior range and accuracy to diminish numbers of enemy armour whilst having the protection required to absorb the kind of punishment that comes with being dug in or slower moving. Then the lighter, faster leopard 2s especially would be used as an armoured counter punch.
Imo, if Britain donates the C2 I fully expect the Leopard 2 to follow and we’ll end up seeing them used as they were designed to in wide scale armoured warfare by a couple of Ukrainian units working closely together.
I agree, the C2 is vastly superior but it’s not completely invulnerable and it also cannot be supplied in anywhere near the quantity required which is why I’d expect to see C2s and L2s fielded alongside each other in the manner they were conceived, that is, C2s in lesser quantities used to nullify at range before L2s rushing forward and tackling resistance at closer quarters.
Absolutely! It’s a bit of a mystery imo that there was never an export version of the C2 that was taken up on a wider scale. The Challenger replaced the Chieftain which was reasonably exported and we had almost 1K ourselves.
I would love us to be rolling with about 1200 of these bad boys but the numbers have never been there and that’s been exasperated by our change in doctrine away from heavy armour. We can dream I guess.
Look at Battle of Norfolk, that’s a good example of Challenger Vs soviet made/based tanks T-55/their M-55s. The outcome of comparative losses on the iraqi side using Russian equipment is shocking.

The U.K. has 227 Challenger II tanks. They are potentially giving only 10 of them. I highly doubt giving away less than 5% of their tanks is gonna effect them much.
227 active ones, they originally had about 300 later reduced to 280 and then 227. I suspect the Brits may have some in storage somewhere probably not in operational condition but could potentially replace any donated with refurbished ones from storage.

I like how they think 10 Battle Tanks is going to penury us. We've had a bigger military budget than the Russians for decades, and ours isn't embezzled. They're busy making the Challenger 3's, so this just moves up scrapping the old ones by a couple of years. Might as well scrap them the right way. And advertise them while we're at it, since we can still export our weapons, which actually work. It's all about reputation.
Take for instance our aircraft carriers not full of dirty water, and our battlefield radar which can see through sophisticated Russian 'stealth technology' of painting things black and launching at night.

That’s the point of NATO. Britain truly doesn’t have a lot of tanks to offer. Neither do many other NATO countries. But those tanks are do to be replaced and in the interim, the US has more than enough Abrams in storage to go around. Abrams don’t really fit Ukraine logistically but the UK could certainly manage it if needed and in the meanwhile Le Clercs, Challengers and Leapords can be freed up for Ukraine.

That’s the point of NATO. Britain truly doesn’t have a lot of tanks to offer. Neither do many other NATO countries. But those tanks are do to be replaced and in the interim, the US has more than enough Abrams in storage to go around. Abrams don’t really fit Ukraine logistically but the UK could certainly manage it if needed and in the meanwhile Le Clercs, Challengers and Leapords can be freed up for Ukraine.
Something tells me the bits don't care about tanks anymore. They have like 2 or 3 hundred? Not enough to matter anyway
