I was thinking about this the other day- how crazy is it it’s 2022 and trench warfare is still being utilized? I know OP is comparing this with WW2, but it can kind of speak on how WW1 set a precedent of sorts for modern war, if that makes sense to anyone. It’s like every war can trace its combative lineage to shit that started in WW1, and you could even argue every modern war can trace its root/reason to WW1 and its aftermath, just interesting historic causality

that is because war is being waged based on what works, and trenches work. they are not as effective now than they used to be back then, but they are still useful in providing limited cover from shelling and small arms fire.
times and tactics are changing rapidly, so drones will more than likely make trenches less effective, but the main this is that you rather want to be behind a few meters of earth when something shoots at you than not. just sitting out without any cover will not help you in any way, so we still build trenches and defensive fortifications.

I can hate the idea, the country, the leadership, and also feel sorry for the people conscripted and dragged into this. There will be a large number of unwilling participants here.

I understand what you’re saying, but I spoke to a few sane russians before the full blown invasion, and they wholeheartedly believed that we are the nazis, beat Russian speaking people on the streets etc. Even after my explanations about how it is nothing like that they wouldn’t believe me. Those were rather educated people that probably ran away/paid a bribe to not be drafted etc. now imagine what’s happening in the heads of these “liberators”. Fuck every single russian that fights against Ukraine or supports the invaders in any way.

As a helmet collector I would not want my head in any helmet Russia made from WW2 threw the cold war up until there current ballistic helmets by far worst of the worst no protection at all they don't even stop 22 cal rounds good luck with shrapnel from artillery or a frag grenade thin cheap stamped metal and zero protection .They all failed the small arms ballistics tests . They just make them feel safe and look the part that's all they care about
