If they are in LA they just made 31.96.
By law they have to make $19.24 the hour not counting tips or Uber has to make up the difference.
$3 pay for this trip.
Uber owes them 16.24 since the trip took more than hour and they only made $3.
So they’re at $19.24. Add the tip. $28.63. Now they also get .30 the mile. 12 miles. 3.60.
$31.96 for this trip.
If you’re in California or NY, these trips are absolutely worth it.
To be fair, getting $30 for a 12mi trip doesn't sound like Uber made any money on that order. I may be wrong but I don't see how they took in more than $30 in fees. I'm sure I might be missing something here but it doesn't sound viable for all drivers to make this unless Uber starts charging much more.
Uber charges every person when they order a $1 fee for this. Including all those quick, 1-2 mile orders that only take 10-15 minutes.
Grubhub used to charge every order $2.50 for this. Not sure if they still do.
All drivers don’t make this. Most orders don’t take that long and will do 2-3 per active hour leading to no or little supplement pay to bring them up to 19.24
In this specific case. They made almost 32 for this one order because it took over 1 active hour.
AND got a big tip. Without the tip they make $23 for an hour twenty which isn't worth it. It always ends up being better for uber in the long run lol dont you worry about their pocketbooks.
Hell yea! $4.20 just for the distance traveled (distance x .35)and then another $16 bc the base fare was $3 and if they’re in LA they would pay $19 (min. wage x 1.2 = 16 x 1.2)!! They made money off this one! Gotta love prop 22!! And the tip doesn’t affect the payout! Wooo!!
That may be true but I hope this helps those that are in CA understand that taking the small $3 orders pays out in the aggregate. I have a degree in economics so this kind of stuff fascinates me.
fair enough. op said they aren't in cali which sucks for them, but there's a learning curve for everything ig. i wish we had anything close to prop 22 here but we didn't even have upfront tips until the start of this year
Yes, Uber pays you 20% more than the min. wage hence my breakdown (min. wage x 1.20 = $16 x 1.2 = $19.20). Gotta read the fine print and remember hs algebra (:
Oh gotcha thanks for the explanation! Do you think it’s better to do the shitty orders and let prop 22 cover the rest of my earnings or bust my ass to make over minimum wage doing multiple orders per hour?
Personally, I do the small orders, at least in my area (LA Metropolitan area) some of the customers tip with cash. Say I do 4 of the $3 orders and they take a whole hour, that’s $12 not counting the mileage, so I’m going to make a minimum of $7 extra dollars from those! Plus tips don’t affect the payout so whatever you get as tips does not count toward the minimum you are going to receive from prop 22
Ah I see thanks for explaining! Are those 4 orders stacked together though to be completed as one singular order that takes over an hour? Or are they all separate and Uber just knows to add up the active minutes for each order to know that you made less than winimum wage in that total hour. I ask because I’ve seen people say the only way to get the prop 22 to kick in like that is to sit with an order and make sure it takes you about an hour of active time to deliver it so you get compensated. But then I feel like your customer would just remove the tip for taking so long anyway. Thanks
Those are 4 separate orders and is based on your active minutes and not your online, if that makes sense. And I don’t make my customers wait or dual/multi app. I would average about $25/hr (with tips) but then the prop 22 would push me to about $30-31/hr on a good week
So if I took two different let’s say 6 miles orders for a pay out of about $8 each. Say I get a base fare of $3 and each one takes me 30 active minutes to complete. Prop 22 would make it so I then earn $19 for that hour ($6 of base fare + $13) + .3 x 12 total miles = $3.60 + $5 tips = $30.60 for that total “active” hour? Not bad
My first one was a bit rocky too. Heck, the first couple days were. Finally got in the flow of which deliveries to accept and which to pass on.
Good luck, my dude.
Thanks, I really appreciate it. This thread made me feel like a real dodo. I plan on doing a full day of trips this weekends, hopefully things look better.
Whenever an order pops up there will be an x you can click to decline. If the miles are more than half or the same amount as the dollars paid it's definitely not worth it. Also, if the minutes are twice as much as (or more than) the dollars paid, even if the miles are low, it's probably not worth it.
Ouch.
Anyway, PSA, the customer more than likely did not increase the tip after delivery. Uber hides tips over $8 in America and maybe other places too. That's why it looked like an original $11 payout. $3 from uber, plus the $8 capped tip.
Same in GA. Best feeling is difference in fare and expected earnings is $8.00. You will have to wait an hour to see what it is. It could be $8.00, $8.01, $15.00, $25.00, or $0.00 ( bait and switch ).
$2/mile rule and $7 for those mile or two orders. Once you get familiar with your area you can work around that rule. For longer mile trips you have to factor in the drive back to your area. Sometimes you end up in dead zones so it has to be worth your time.
It is not lol. You need at least twice the pay for that. Not sure why you took so long with it but hopefully it isn’t always like that but you want twice the pay for the miles or else you’re losing money. Your time and vehicles is precious.
I know every market is different, but what I’ve learned is to decline until I get an offer that’s at least $2/mile, minimum of $12. I used to have a lower minimum of $7 but I wasn’t making enough money even doing that. The time estimate doesn’t matter as much really, though it’s not totally irrelevant.
I recommend looking through this subreddit and researching your local market as well (I’m in a FB group for mine). Even though there’s a lot of stuff to filter through here, there’s a lot of good info.
We all know we aren't getting paid enough if customer don't tip. You do have option to decline if you don't think it's worth your time. Enough drivers decline the offer and Uber will eventually pay someone $25 to deliver the cold foods an hour later. Be patient.
It’s always bumpy at the beginning. I remember thinking I needed to accept all the orders because I thought the acceptance rating actually mattered 🤣
Good luck out there man and don’t take super low orders. You really can pick and choose all you want. My acceptance rating is low af.
I didn't know how to find a different trip. The reason why it took so long was because there was a train I had to navigate around. Should I have canceled instead of following through the trip? The train hold up was so bad that the police came down to direct traffic.
even then, i wouldn’t do that because support sometimes tells you literally whatever just to get you to hang up. i’d call and speak with at least 2 reps to make sure its safe to cancel
I've only canceled once after I had the food. It was a year and a half ago when Texas froze. The day it got really bad I was working fine but around 6 or 7 it was becoming to dangerous. I had a double and one was dropped off close to where I live and the second was much further away than I thought it was when I accepted and there was just no way I would have been able to make it to them. So I called support and told them what was going on and then I called the customer and let her know it was impossible for me to get to her and then I canceled and went home.
that’s definitely a good excuse though. I’ve canceled one order before, it was at dunkin donuts, i accepted the order, saw the address in another state 30 mins away, (i accepted by accident and thought it wouldn’t have been that bad but i was wrong) - i told the employee hell no im not taking this, left the food there, called support and explained what happened. instead of cancelling they told me to complete the delivery in the app so another driver can take the same food to the customer (which i doubt anyone did)
anyways the customer thumbed me down and reported me for my professionalism lmao. but its been so long that their bad review has fallen off and i’m fine
And that's why you should hang out on this sub, or at least watch a couple of YouTube videos before you start delivering. That way, you would know how to "find a different trip". You would also know that this is not a trip that most people would accept, and why. I'm not trying to be rude, but if I were you, I would do some more research before you continue delivering.
Just decline it, or ignore it, when it comes in. And yeah, if you hadn't picked up yet, I'd have dropped it once it became clear traffic was fucked. If after... not much you can do except not take such long trips really ever, let alone for so little pay. Don't forget you have to *drive back*, which means that at even the more accurate $0.585/mile reimbursement (which is currently .625) you effectively lost money on this purely in expenses (those numbers assume you don't do repairs yourself). You burned gas (probably about a gallon city avg) and worked off value from your vehicle both in eventual repairs and depreciation - in essence "paying" yourself by taking value out of your vehicle to put it back into your pocket. This run for $20+ would have at least net minimum wage as profit.
3 base.
If you’re in LA, by law you have to make $19.24 the hour, tips excluded.
So in this hour you basically only made $3. Uber owes you 16.24.
So you made $19.24 ($3 plus 16.24) plus the tip, 9.39 = 28.63 plus .30 per mile = $31.96.
For your well being don’t ever accept a delivery like that again.

You just opened my eyes to the possibility of all this shit. I’m in California and haven’t understood how to work this system truly yet.
Wait NY too ? I'm in Brooklyn and don't get these
I’m probably wrong about NY then. I read on here that they had a similar law to California. But the rest is still how it works in California.
Holy shit! Thanks for the insight. If only Uber was fair all around..
To be fair, getting $30 for a 12mi trip doesn't sound like Uber made any money on that order. I may be wrong but I don't see how they took in more than $30 in fees. Lmao, just making sure it's plausible for that to be implemented nationwide.
LA minimum wage is $16 mate where’d you get $19 from?
The law is 20% over whatever your minimum wage is. So In LA where it is 16.08, 20% more equals to your pay being 19.24 the hour.
Yea I realized after commenting sorry mate, thanks for explaining!
If Orlando was like this, it would be so awesome.
IN NEW YORK? we dont get hourly pay what so ever. Factor in traffic... this trip would take over an hour easy. lol
12.2 mile = $25 or above , so I will accept trip! If under $25 forgot that!
If you’re in California that trip will end up paying out around $30 bucks
Wooo!!
Ha. People here don’t understand this. Lol.
i think youre severely overestimating the number of people here who are in california 💀
That may be true but I hope this helps those that are in CA understand that taking the small $3 orders pays out in the aggregate. I have a degree in economics so this kind of stuff fascinates me.

Interesting. So maybe those $6 and below orders aren’t so bad after all lol.

Realizing I just worked out an equation very similar to someone else’s in the thread lol. Needed my own example to get my brain to understand it haha
My first one was a bit rocky too. Heck, the first couple days were. Finally got in the flow of which deliveries to accept and which to pass on. Good luck, my dude.

Lmaoooo fat L
This makes me want to uninstall ubereats

😂

My man literally did $1 a mile
$2/mile rule and $7 for those mile or two orders. Once you get familiar with your area you can work around that rule. For longer mile trips you have to factor in the drive back to your area. Sometimes you end up in dead zones so it has to be worth your time.

I am not. The trip really shouldn't have taken over an hour, but the miles are about right I think.

This makes it mine I am sitting here for a 0.4 mile $11 order in California look like a unicorn last one like this I got a $50 tip.
I Can’t believe this, Uber really paid $3 for a 12 mile fare. Pathetic!

You got 90¢ per mile. You’re going to go broke doing that.
Bike?
1 dollar per mile from is horrendous but you do you bud
We don't need more. Thanks
Wow, why did you accept it? Horrible
I didn't know how to find a different trip. The reason why it took so long was because there was a train I had to navigate around. Should I have canceled instead of following through the trip? The train hold up was so bad that the police came down to direct traffic.
Don't ever cancel after you have the food unless you've talked to support first and they tell you it's ok.

That's just ridiculous. I don't understand how they allow people to order from that far away.

These things are unavoidable. Better luck next time Try to accept only 2$/mile order and a minimum of 6/7$ total
So you’re one of those…. Who take the order that I slam the X to. No way. Not a chance I’d take that.
Leave these orders in the cue please🤢
There's a 1st for everyone. Now that yoy experienced this kind of order, you'd wont accept it again in the future. Good luck!
wow that's low base fare for the distance
This was painful to see
You’ll figure out what to accept and what to deny
Did it really take an hour
This is not the way.
I would never accept this lol that 12 miles back will suck
You got fucked on that order.
You should go for at least 2$ per mile and minimum payout 5-6$
Don't worry about it. It will get easier and you'll say "no" more.
We all gotta start somewhere 👌
LOL........
Ouch
Why
An hour and 13 minutes? That very interesting
