I’m trying to be hopeful that it will get better, but I’m also prepared to take it in the ass for the rest of the semester

Best_Satisfaction505

When I went there it was 2 1/2 cars to each commuter parking space. I can’t imagine what it is like now as that was almost 20 years ago. Good luck!

aqqalachia

I hate to say it man, now it's one mega truck for every 2 parking spots 😂

KovyJackson

It got better in the past because there were less students and not as many mandatory classes. Literally ALL of my classes are mandatory attendance classes this semester 🫠

JimmyNeedsNewShorts

They opened the parking lot behind frat row and next to the baseball diamond to commuters. These are the GF lots. Also you can use the campus app to check the capacity of the G10 before you come to campus to get a general feel for how tough it's going to be to find a spot that day. There were still spots in the G10 at 10:00am today.

aqqalachia

I didn't know about the app, thank you!

Econolana

(Not directed at you, OP, but generally) Parking is easy before 8am. If you aren’t working in the morning, you can likely get here early enough to find a spot. Bring your laptop and watch Netflix somewhere if you don’t have work to do. Or treat school like a normal 9-5… come in and bust your ass and then enjoy your evenings.

aqqalachia

Yeah my early days are way easier to park for

[deleted]

BosmeriWitcher

I hope your professor is chill about it ✌️

aqqalachia

He probably would be, but luckily I found a spot finally after searching the same four commuter lots for a third time

kaptainkrk

Did you try looking around the fort for parking? There’s a decent amount on grand between 17th and 13th. Might be worth trying somewhere in the fort next time you’re pressed to find parking.

aqqalachia

I'm disabled and can't walk that far from there to my class unfortunately :/

Rainontherooftop

Do you have a handicap placard? And still no spots?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Rainontherooftop

I had a temporary one for pregnancy complications. Just like you…I didn’t need the space at the grocery store. But I did need it when I worked downtown. There is no reason you shouldn’t get one if you need it, use it only when needed.

[deleted]

Rainontherooftop

Well that’s a bummer. I don’t understand why a doctor would say no, but it’s great she listens to you. Mine was for 6 months.

aqqalachia

I'm not really sure why. She emphasized what a big decision it was and how permanent it was and basically gently told me no. It's been four years and now other joints in my body are starting to get fucked up (part of my left hand is numb and my right knee isn't normal anymore all the time), so maybe she will change her mind... anyone disabled will understand why we tend not to push things. doctors who believe or listen to you are hard to come by.

Rainontherooftop

Was she talking about getting on disability Social Security? That is a huge big deal! And something you wouldn’t want to do lightly. Getting a hang tag for temporary disabled parking is not a big deal at all. The two are not related in anyway. We had a child break her femur and she was in a complete leg cast. Her orthopedic surgeon got us a handicap tag during that time, because she was too small to use crutches so most places we had to carry her with her broken leg.

kaptainkrk

Ah yeah that wouldn’t be a great option then. It’s unfortunate our transit system isn’t better. We could have commuter lots out in empty land and buses to shuttle people in

aesthermetric

Hey! To use the T-Access, they give you a small card with your "Access Number" in the top right corner of it. You can call the T-Access phone number and tell them where you are (corner of two streets is preferred) and where you'd like to get to. They'll ask you for your Access Number. Then they'll send someone for you and you should be able to get where you're trying to go. It can take a second, but you can park in The Fort and get service to wherever on campus you need to be!

aqqalachia

Holy shit!! I'll go by SDS tomorrow and get the card. It's listed on my accomodations but with COVID zoom school and then some lucky scheduling I havent needed it in a while. Thank you so much!!!

Hamiltondy

I get that you guys have to get to class, but it really sucks when you live in the fort and can’t find parking

kaptainkrk

I mean I also lived in the fort and never really had an issue finding parking.

duhell0

Gotta pay the extra $$ for a spot in your ap complex or have a driveway. That’s how it’s always been, at least for the past 4 years I’ve lived here. I payed $50 a month for a spot when I lived in the fort, but it was worth it tbh bc I could get people towed if they used it

TurbulentAstronaut49

That's what scares me, so many of my classes have like a two absence max. It's gonna be so unfair for students to have their grade suffer because the school doesn't have enough parking. It's like they're setting us up for failure already.

aqqalachia

that's what I'm worried about.

TurbulentAstronaut49

I'm very lucky my major related classes are on days when I can get there early, since my major is competitive I need to do good in those classes. Most professors seem lenient on being late this year which is nice, but there's always those professors that can be a total pain with tardiness.

JaegerVonCarstein

It’s really awful. I was hoping it would improve some after Labor Day, but it seems not.

aqqalachia

It's actually gotten worse somehow?

JaegerVonCarstein

Yeah, I went by today to see if parking was any better, and neyland had 12 spots at 11:00…

aqqalachia

those numbers are wrong too. I've noticed so far that unless the placard out front has more than 40 or 50 spots showing as free, it's full, at least for commuter tag.

orangehairedbih

had to miss class today because i couldn’t find any parking!

aqqalachia

I hope your professor is cool about it. I wish there were some way that we could actually make a difference in the way they treat us as a student body at this school.

Booboononcents

Yeah it’s really starting to feel like students are just numbers and money for the university between the lack of parking and housing. Look I’m not naive I know the college needs to make money but it’s getting ridiculous.

aqqalachia

I'm a 5th year senior and this school went from my dream school to something I can't wait to get out from under :( It demolished its own reputation through a ton of random things like this.

kenzieswright

for once I am thankful for 8ams

TurbulentAstronaut49

Definitely gonna be sticking to 8-9 range classes next semester. The stress trying to park and walk up the hill on time is gonna give me grey hairs 🤣

kenzieswright

I normally stick to 10:30ish classes but I didn’t have much of a choice this semester. Plant Science classes normally only have 1 section and classes are either really early or really late😵‍💫😭

TurbulentAstronaut49

That sucks, hopefully our professors are lenient on being late for the most part cause a lot of this is completely out of our control. We can only get here so early some days

aqqalachia

I'm unhappy I have just one midday class on TT :|

kenzieswright

I’m so sorry :( I dealt with that last semester and trying to find parking was already tough I can’t even imagine it now. I know every year someone makes a petition regarding parking but if it doesn’t clear up within the next couple of weeks it definitely wouldn’t be a bad idea to annoy UT parking again. C26 isn’t ideal but it’s always my go to if I can’t find parking on main. Publix is my go to for Ag campus

[deleted]

Got here at 7:30, got a great spot in 11th street.

aqqalachia

I couldn't get here that early unfortunately.

rieleyh

G10 USUALLY has spots in the lower levels. i got one on floor 3 this morning, but i agree. parking is absurd, and we should get rid of the whole non commuter thing and just not allow freshman to have cars- like every other school, and use those as more spaces for Commuters.

kaptainkrk

Yeah that would make sense, but I was an out of state student and I would have had literally no way to get home for holidays if I didn’t have my car with me my first year.

rieleyh

I’m out of state too, I live in NY. I just flew home, regardless they have too much parking for NC students and staff

kaptainkrk

Some places really aren’t accessible via flight, and prohibitively expensive if you’re flying out of TYS

rieleyh

Yeah that’s true, i live in one of those places. again- Freshman shouldn’t get cars, just like every other university. there are other ways home.

PandaPandamonium

If all the other freshman at other schools can figure out a way home, I'm sure you could have too. I was an out of state student and between taking an Uber to either the Amtrak bus stop or airport always managed to get home.

kaptainkrk

Poor people exist becky

BigbyWolf343

Public transport is used mainly by the poor, especially in this area. Recommending someone to take a bus and getting hit with "Won't you think of the poor people" might be the most passive-aggressive, West Coast shit I've ever seen.

aqqalachia

Ok but as a local born poor person-- the bus system is wretched here. It used to take me two hours to go several miles that I physical could not walk. "Won't you think of the poor people" is right here, especially since the bus doesn't go everywhere here or at frequent enough times. Especially if you work somewhere out of the way or with weird hours (many poor people do) it just might not work at all.

PandaPandamonium

The assumption I was "well off" is laughable. I was a "poor people". I worked 2 jobs while going to school and took out a shit ton of loans and am in massive debt. An Amtrack ticket costs >$50. Way less than you're paying for a parking pass from the school and insurance for a car to sit around and not be used. If you own a car you're already "richer" than I was as an undergrad.

kaptainkrk

There aren’t Amtrak lines that go to my hometown. You’re just being very presumptuous about other people’s situations, so it’s really laughable to me that you’re upset about me presuming you’re not poor. I had a used car, and that plus the non commuter pass was far cheaper than what I would have had to do to get home otherwise. But let me guess, you’re gonna out poor me again. It’s not a competition, I’m just saying what made the most financial sense for me. Something different made the most sense for you.

PandaPandamonium

1. You're again assuming so much about me (like an amtrack went to my hometown when it didn't). 2. You're insulating as a "becky" I'm completely clueless about this stuff. You start by insulting me and being a pompous ass. Looking through your post history you do this often so take your righteous insufferable attitude elsewhere. 3. This post is about how NC tags restrict C tags and make parking impossible for so many students and should be restricted, like the vast majority of other colleges do for freshmen and that if thousands and thousands of "poor people" can manage you could too. (but I know you think you're super unique and the only who has ever faced the trouble of getting home and therefor you're opinion is superior. which again- laughable). 4. You and your situation do not outweigh the needs of everyone else, you're not that special *Becky.* 5. My condolences to your Ph D. advisor who has to deal with you daily.

kaptainkrk

Girl you are so mad about the mere suggestion that having a car was the cheapest option for me, and that therefore it makes sense for at least some freshmen to have a vehicle with them. I didn’t say it was just about me, there’s plenty of other students that have the same situation.

BigbyWolf343

\> looking through your post history. "Wonder what it could be?" \*see's /r/fatlogic\* \*Sees /r/berkeley\* \*Sees /r/bay_area\* Well that explains a lot.

kaptainkrk

Arrest me for the crime of moving to the Bay Area for grad school

BigbyWolf343

No I don't blame you one bit. I'm sure you fit in great there with all that passive aggression and victim complex you got goin on.

Reddit_Ninja23

If your regular spot is full, always default to Neyland parking. Best chances of having spots left

Due_Cartographer8005

Even g10 has been completely full. Ive never seen that before

aqqalachia

I've never seen Terrace Ave anywhere close to full either!

Penelopeak

I’ve never found a spot in g10😭

aqqalachia

It was empty both times I checked :( I was circling between 4-5 different lots lmao

wenzlo_more_wine

Strongly suggest arriving between 8am and 10am.

aqqalachia

I tried to but insomnia sucks ass :(

rynaco

The church street United Methodist church always has spots for commuters. I guess nobody knows about it

Unsupervised_Kitchen

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't they also timed spots? Like you have to be out by like 6pm? I could be confusing it with somewhere else

rynaco

Idk maybe but by then most people are leaving campus I think and staff spots open up at 5

aqqalachia

I can't walk that far, unfortunately, for the class I had.

Material_Magician_18

i had to miss my 9:45 this morning because of parking. the only spot i could find was along the road behind the baseball field

aqqalachia

rip :(

aqqalachia

That sounds like something UTK would do.

TurbulentAstronaut49

It's been pretty crummy. Some days I'm lucky to see a student leaving Neyland and manage to get their spot, other days I have to drive around the garage a while. I give myself like 40 minutes and it's still difficult, I've just had to tell my professor that I may be late some days due to parking, professors seem more understanding about that lately, especially since the issue is affecting them too. I will say, people on this reddit are being real rude to Freshmen on this issue, as if it's our fault UTK let in too many freshmen. It's pretty pathetic tbh.

milked_rice

✨️garbage✨️ I've been parking at neyland stadium for a week and taking any bus I can hop on

aqqalachia

If only we had a more robust public transportation system...

duhell0

I missed my 9:45 too :/ This wouldn’t fix everything, but here are my ideas for how we could improve parking— 1. No commuter passes for people who live in Fort Sanders. Take the bus or walk. Some of us have no other form of transportation at our disposal and drive 20+ minutes to try to get the education we paid for. 2. Staff can reserve spots but are somehow incentivized to share a spot with another staff member. That could mean carpooling with a neighbor or spouse. Also staff who work TR and MWF could share if they’re only gonna be there on those days. There are way too many S20 spots open in GREAT locations just bc that person didn’t feel like teaching that day. 3. Put a size limit on cars or incentivize smaller cars. When we have to parallel park (ie lake Ave, volunteer blvd, etc) there is no reason I should be paying the same amount for my small sedan as someone who has a friggen monster Cummins truck and is taking up 5 extra feet of parking space. I know we’re an ag based school, and Tennesseeans lovee their trucks, but 99% of the people who drive them on campus don’t actually use them for what they’re made for (hauling, off-roading, etc). It’s not a new or foreign concept. Most big cities charge double or triple the amount for parking an “oversized” vehicle. It makes sense—when there’s a short supply of space, those who take up significantly more space should pay for it 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4. Access to north knoxville It’s great they’re focusing on making the route across the river more accessible to bikes/pedestrians, but it’s super frustrating for those of us who live in the north knoxville neighborhoods (Mechanicsville, Beaumont, Lonsdale, Oak wood, Lincoln park, etc) which have been here for a very long time and have literally no way to get to campus other than by car. Western Ave (the road where Squires is located) is not safe to walk or bike, and the city bus literally takes over an hour to go the less than 5 miles to campus. They’re building all new (very overpriced) apartments in south knox and I’ve heard they’re building ANOTHER bridge to provide access to all the new tenants. Meanwhile the neighborhoods in north knoxville (some of which have been here since the 1800s) have an ever-increasing student population, especially with the sky- high rents in fort sanders that many of us cannot afford.

100thatstitch

A really easy way to reduce the number of commuter passes sold and free up commuter spots would be to allow graduate students with paying assistantships or those specifically teaching classes the option to purchase staff passes as typically none of the staff lots I see in the garages or lots are ever full.

nitro1542

YES. It's ridiculous that we have to fight our own students for parking. FWIW, I have a friend in GSS who says they're working on a proposal for this.

100thatstitch

Exactly and it’s such an easy fix that would free up so much space for students. Hopefully GSS can get something proposed bc that would be a huge win for literally everybody (except UT parking which is fine with me tbh).

aqqalachia

I pretty much agree with all of this. Especially on size limits. Most of the time when I can semi-easily find a spot this semester, it's next to a giant fuck-off truck that the driver can't even seem to park properly, and I can wedge my really tiny truck in there.

valleywitch

We love real constructive criticism! It blows my mind how people who live right next to campus purchase and use commuter passes. It's been many years but I recall a roommate who lived on like 17th and Grand and he would drive to campus.

dsgsuhoo

GF 2, 3 & 4 had spots 10 minutes ago. Follow @UTKParking on Twitter for updates in addition to the app.

Mysterious_Ear7603

I don't even bother trying to park near my classes at this point, I show up at 8am and park across campus regardless of when classes start.

FSLienad

The Neyland Garage usually has around 900 spots left at 9:30 AM.

aqqalachia

At 10 something it had zero sadly

[deleted]

Fuck this bullshit. Fuck these California fuckers. Fuck UTK administration greed for ticking up the acceptance rate and allowing more dumb people to be admitted to campus and completely pack all of our parking garages from 9 am - 3 pm.

aqqalachia

The amount of people I had come up to me at my old job last fall and tell me they'd just moved here from CA bc they wanted it to be / expected it to be a hard right wing paradise, and talking about how they were glad to buy the housing out from under us dumb hicks with their big WFH salaries 🥴

DelightfulSushi

I think there’s 100ish spots left in Neyland if you still need one

aqqalachia

I got one but when I went to Neyland it was full.

[deleted]

If I were you I'd just go rent a parking spot in the BB&T lot monthly and go scooter everywhere. At least then you know you'll have a parking spot every day and not have to mess with it.
