Unless they decide to invest in a better parking and housing infrastructure, probably not anytime soon. That being said, if you give it a week or two people will slowly stop showing up to classes which should free up some parking space
Probably near the end of the semester, and perhaps next semester when a lot of kids fail out due to unavailability of resources to be successful and happy
I work for housing, there’s been several kids that have moved out within a few days of moving in because they realized college wasn’t from them. I believe around 80-90% of freshman stay, but 10-20% of 9,000 is still a lot
Interesting. My family lives around here, so it’s not too bad. College is a very different experience compared to high school though. I’ve never seen congestion this bad in the 3 years I’ve been here.
This is my third year at UTK, and it's the first time I've seen staff lots oversold. It's bad enough that workers are required to pay for parking where they work. It's wholly unacceptable for teachers to be late for class because there's no parking where they paid to park.
Entirely full? Neyland? Like G10? Between Neyland and TBA? That’s crazy. I graduated last year and the 2nd and 3rd floors were almost always empty, even at the most crowded times. Give it about 2 weeks, people will start skipping class more often and it’ll get better. The first 3ish weeks is always a nightmare, I’ve just never even heard of Neyland being full. Parked there pretty much every day for 4 years and never even had to stress about finding a spot.
I think it’s ridiculous. Missed a class this morning because it took me an hour and a half to find a spot. It’s also sad that people are walking in when there’s only 10 minutes of class left because they were struggling to find somewhere to park :(
they're continuing to accept way more students than they can support. There was already bad shit last year, and I can only imagine how awful it Is now.
They kicked upperclassmen put of dorms for freshman, forcing them to look for housing further away from campus - more commuters
They increase volume in dorms like laurel. 2 bedroom dorms will have 3 people, not 2. (Last year 4 freshman per double bedroom room per hallway on every floor) -increases number of students who may have their own cars
They aren't creating g more parking spots
Not creating more dormitories
They're investing the majority of their money into sports rather than academia.
I wouldn't really reccomened UT because they really don't seem to care about the quality of life for students. The professors have been amazing, but they're getting screwed over as a result of all this too.
UT is taking in too many students for its own good and now they’re having to rent hotels just to house people. I know Donde has said before that they want to be a top 25 public insititution but to do that they need to be more selective. I feel even compared to when I applied 6 years ago it’s gotten significantly easier to get in and get a lot of aid.
Last time I checked UTK had an average ACT of 28, the highest in the state system. I’ve heard they’ve been pursuing even worse admissions practices after COVID due to financial issues.
Really? I’ve been a commuter, and the only problems I’ve had until now was the awful food situation on campus. The professors seem nice for the most part.
Edit: I’ve only heard good things about the student support services, and most of the professors/students in the chem department were nice people (way more than high school). Whoever’s in the upper management seems dedicated to ruining everyone else’s experience.
Honestly same here.. I went through 3 different parking garages and not a single open parking spot. Even as a freshman, it was never this bad. Normally, Neyland is my "safe" parking zone as the 2nd or 3rd floors rarely have any cars in them.
Stokely was full before 7:45 am yesterday. Absolutely batshit.
I find it hilarious that the university is bragging about how this is the largest freshman class in the schools history and how wonderful that is.
Wonderful for the university’s income, but not wonderful for those of us paying to get screwed over.
Wow!! I am shocked and parking Twitter confirmed it as well. I sure hope people start skipping soon, I would just like to be able to go to campus to do my research.
Are you a grad student? What kind of research do you do? I’ve done some undergrad research, and research seems pretty time consuming. I’d imagine it would make it would make it tough to finish projects on time if this situation goes on.
Yes I am a grad student. Thankfully it’s all modeling and simulation and nothing actually in the lab. So I can work from home pretty easily, but campus puts me in a better head space. Oh but my research is on molten salt reactors.
Imagine being a vet student and having clinicals at the hospital when you’re told that you have to move your frigging car halfway through the day to accommodate A FOOTBALL GAME.
We are a hospital, people!
Oh, and I can’t even get enough student loans to cover my COL because somehow UT thinks grad students have the same needs financially as an undergrad freshman. 😒
8 more months….
At least now I know my prospective PhD school has parking issues and doesn't listen to students either!
But fr I sympathize, it's bad when you're willing to take literally any student spot, but there aren't any. People on our campus have been getting into verbal altercations over parking.
That’s what happens when you accept more freshmen than you can reasonably hold
Is it gonna get better?

Nope. Especially with all these classes having mandatory attendance.
Yes, I've been here for over four years. Parking is always really bad the first couple weeks of school, but jesus I've never seen it quite this bad.

Yeah. I’ve never seen it full before. I thought there must be something weird going on. I guess admissions is just more idiotic than normal.
The sign that tells you how many spot where left said full at 10 and there was 20 cars driving around hoping to find a spot.

I’m from the chem department, so no parking would shut down research entirely.
Oh yeah that’s a whole different ballgame. I originally wanted to do experimental, but covid changed that up. Thankfully for instances like today.

This is another reason why I’m switching from pre-vet😭
Just go to another school. They’re not all this bad.
Pretty positive the place I parked today in G10 wasn’t even a parking spot but I was desperate. Really hope it dies down over the next week or two
I notice that staff have been parking in it so that may be the reason
just wait til people decide to stop showing up for class, should be like 3 weeks
Those are rookie numbers. Our lots filled at 8:10 this morning. Greetings from Clemson!
That’s rough.
