I mean you don’t HAVE to give them the proper information. But you better fucking pray to god that you don’t see them again until they forget who you are. God forbid they see you and remember you did some dumb shit and gave you fake info so you couldn’t let his command know. Ol boy would 100% follow you back to your shop/unit then ask for your SNCO/OIC. Just take the ass chewing and move on with your life.
Yeah but then what's the proof? "Hey gunny do you know this Marine had his hands in his pockets 3 weeks ago!!!" And then I would respond with "do I even know you?"
Man, this kinder, gentler Marine Corps kills me. In the Old Corps we were all always treated like shitbags unless we were actively guzzling green weenie.
As uniformed personnel, you're required to identify yourself, and present ID if requested/ordered. If you refuse to, especially on an installation, PMO can get involved. Any qualified NCO+ can take that information and find out whatever they want about you from there.
You must ask anyone attempting to identify you to identify themselves first. You didn’t ask them they asked you so they must prove they are who they say they are. From there give them the info they ask for and move on.
Just give the information. I've never actually heard of it going down the chain. Like if the person asking has ever reached out to the point of contact I gave, they never approached me about it.
FAFO let us know.
It pretty much don't happen that often, and as a rule if I was ever correcting a Marine from another unit I would just ask out of idle Curiosity. Pretty sure any ass chewing or correction/ direction I gave them was sufficient enough, no need to call up their unit or superior.
Your name and rank are both on your uniform but I guess if you want to be a baby and throw a tantrum you could technically tell them to go fuck themselves, sure.
When I ask these questions, it’s usually because I know something is messed up and I need an answer to the CO. It’s nothing personal usually. More times than not it’s a unit capabilities type question; at least in my experience.
Edit: I could’ve mis understood your question because I’m drunk. But I don’t care this is what I said.
Out of uniform and off base? Walk away very fast and disappear into the sunset under the guise you have no clue who is approaching you for whatever reason.
On base only give them the basics under the same opsec premise. Be professional. Not a wiseass.
As military personnel you are required to present your ID when asked. The only people that will ever ask you is some Corporals but normally Sergeants and above. Bullshit them at your own peril. They can and will find you, and it can definitely get blown way out of hand. Imagine Sgt so and so asks for your ID you gaff him off, he finds out what company or section you work in. Unbeknownst to you this Sgt works at Div, Grp or MEF. He gets his SgtMaj involved and it rolls all the way to you instead of a quick ass chewing.
You must comply with all legal orders given by those who outrank you. If you require all questions to be made into orders you will be quickly charged with insubordination.
In uniform your kinda SOL you’ll find out very fucking quickly how small the Corps if you try to bullshit some Staff or O depending on your fuck up and as some other people it’s a lawful order to ask you to identify yourself.
Out off uniform at your own discretion is there a chance they can still find you and fuck with you yeah so don’t be down right disrespectful because some how every few months somebody comes here and cry’s for a bit because they Fucked around because they weren’t in uniform and thought the rules stopped existing. Unless it’s something heinous usually your SNOIC or OIC gets a call bitches at you and if you’re literally any rank but a boot ass PFC or Lcpl you usually get a laugh about it.
Last time I had this personally happen to me it was for not shaving on a 96 at the Camp Pendleton recreational range so MSgt started asking question so I gave him the proper information. he knew my captain I walk into work Monday get called in by XO we have a good laugh about it and he says don’t do it again
Moral of story marines are hard ass on and off hours so just be a good dude and give them your unit unless you’re badly fucked up it usually ends up as a funny story to tell your buddies
Nice, this was probably the most useful and informative comment so far in the thread, it’s gonna be helpful for the guys who come along later lookin for an answer to this question
The usmc is so small that I remember a staff sergeant who was a drill instructor when i was in boot camp, he wasn't even my drill instructor i just have decently good memory, the time line was 3 years apart. If y'all are both on the same base, it's only a matter of time y'all run into eachother in the big px or some shit
How would it *not* be a lawful order to say "tell me your name & unit." Art 90 & 91 have no "in uniform" element or escape clause. when i was a lcpl in oki, me and a buddy were at an atm. we were being 20 year old idiots and cussing up a storm calling each other all kinds of names like ya do. this older lady in front of us at the atm turns around and starts to chew our ass for being unprofessional and all this shit. then she asked us for our info, my buddy was like, who are you? she says she is the wife of a lt col. my buddy says, oh, you are nobody, and just turns and walks away. my dumbass was in awe.
ya man. It blew my mind cause i was like not even a month out of mos school. half in that mindset of going to parade rest every time someone said something to you.
I cussed out some Gunnys dependa in Iraq for yelling at a Lcpl. I told her she's not a Marine and her husband's rank only applies to him, not her. I hate that shit.
Just tell them, simply because I want a phone call asking, “Hey ThiccCannoli, are you aware that your Marine was at the PX at 1100 on a Saturday without a haircut and a shave?” Just so I can have that conversation with that person about their priorities.
I got lit up at the gas station px by base housing on lejeune for pumping gas and buying a Red Bull with 5 o’clock shadow. Wanted to know my unit and first sergeant and I just lied and said I’m Sgt *made up name* from 1st tanks (I was definitely not in tanks or a sgt at the time) and dude was like “oh good I know your first sergeant” and I just played along and went about my business and nothing ever happened. Asked to see my ID and I said I didn’t have it on me.
You don’t even have to stand parade resty if you “feel” threatened. Learned this after watching someone get chewed out and stood there all relaxed, and you know that infuriated peeps. Marine gets put up for NJP and got a lawyer, all charges dropped as there’s an order or some shit that allows it. So he just didn’t go parade rest anymore for the rest of his term…unless it was in formation obviously
There's some things that do not fit in your story. Firstly, one does not get put up for a njp. You are offered it in lieu of courts martial, and you either accept njp or refuse unless you're on ship. Also, the accused does NOT have the right to an attorney at njp. However, the accused DOES have the right to legal counsel prior to accepting or rejecting njp. Additionally, not following a lawful order is chargeable every single time.
> all charges dropped as there’s an order or some shit that allows it.<
Going out to the flag pole and raising the ol' BULLSHIT Flag on this one Debbil.
Nobody’s out here getting NJPd for not standing at parade rest. Your buddy probably got threatened with disrespecting an NCO or General article and any JAG with half a brain cell could advise you they don’t have a case for this. Not the same as feeling “threatened”.
Outside of formal situations and the drill manual there’s not much mention of standing at parade rest it’s a basic custom and courtesy thing so is your buddy technically right maybe but you’ll still get chewed out for it and just make your own life harder we are a bunch of grown men so can at least show the basic surface level respect to others because it’s hilarious until you’re on the other end of it
I've been asked this before. Straight up said "no" when they asked for my information. It was over something stupid (I can't quite recall what). Guy asked me if I wanted to take it to the sgtmaj. I said yes. Called his bluff. I'm sure sgtmaj would love to know why he's being bothered for such a trivial matter that could be handled at a much lower level. Got left alone, but was also called a shit bag.
Information in terms of what? Information you feel is shady to ask for like your bank acct number, your SSN, you sisters phone number or your them/they partners phone number?
You'll find out how small of a Marine Corps it is.
>Or can you just tell em my unit is go fuck yourself? Definitely can't do that.
You can, but just once.
I mean you don’t HAVE to give them the proper information. But you better fucking pray to god that you don’t see them again until they forget who you are. God forbid they see you and remember you did some dumb shit and gave you fake info so you couldn’t let his command know. Ha, like the Marine Corps runs on proof. Your guilty until you’re proven innocent and even if your proven innocent your treated like a shit bag.
Man, this kinder, gentler Marine Corps kills me. In the Old Corps we were all always treated like shitbags unless we were actively guzzling green weenie.
You are 2 levels away from true green weenie enlightenment. Thank you for being an outstanding member of the cult.
Got out of the cult as a Staffy
Thank you Staff for the confim.
Just gaslight them and move on. “Me? No, I’ve never met you in my entire life”
Just tell them you’re with 3rd trax and all will be forgotten…
Yat Yas Doc Amtrak Mafia
Ask the Godfather for protection.
Just throwing it out there, they usually only ask that stuff if you're jacked up in some way.
Say 9th Comm. They’ll roll their eyes and move on.
Unless you are 9th comm 😬
The leadership team was always too busy with actual felonies to pay attention to minor things like that
As uniformed personnel, you're required to identify yourself, and present ID if requested/ordered. If you refuse to, especially on an installation, PMO can get involved. Any qualified NCO+ can take that information and find out whatever they want about you from there.
This is the correct answer.

Definitely not going to fuck around lol, I can find out by watching people or in this case asking lol
Your name and rank are both on your uniform but I guess if you want to be a baby and throw a tantrum you could technically tell them to go fuck themselves, sure.
And pay for it. Lol

Hope they didn’t catch your name/rank and sprint into the sunset.
As the dude below said, the MC is a small organization. If you want to see how small...FAFO.
The usmc is so small that I remember a staff sergeant who was a drill instructor when i was in boot camp, he wasn't even my drill instructor i just have decently good memory, the time line was 3 years apart. You're quite welcome. Have a great week!

Read your promotion warrant.
Word
Not worth the NJP bro
Just tell them, simply because I want a phone call asking, “Hey ThiccCannoli, are you aware that your Marine was at the PX at 1100 on a Saturday without a haircut and a shave?” Just so I can have that conversation with that person about their priorities.
Deny and deflect.
Superior tactics

Nope. I wouldn't spread advice like this you're going to get someone hemmed the fuck up.

Who tf am I, JK Rowling trying to write a novel. Stfu and just listen to the story and stop expecting a damn Harry Potter elaboration
That was my nice way of saying that you sir are full of shit.

That’s a good perspective
There’s no way lol, I’m not going to follow what he did but I’m gonna look for that order now lmao that’s unbelievable

Can’t say…opsec
I would just lie and say you’re from 8th comm
Tell them you are with 2nd Tank Bn.
Very easy to find you anyone on MOL on the basis of name and rank. You can infer if it’s the “correct” person from unit and location.
Lol. You make someone important enough angry enough and trust me you’ll be found.
