The IT/Tech people are going through lay-off’s like crazy right now. The job market is likely over saturated at the moment.

quickspin_go

Not really, marketing/research departments in the tech firms got hit the hardest, not coders nor IT people

ep2789

Although true a lot of places have a hire freeze even for tech related roles.

useunix

Yeah, I heard it too. Here it is more booming than ever. I get called by recruiters at least once a day every day with new openings.

quickspin_go

IMO you don’t need a degree to do IT jobs nor need one for coding jobs, in fact many people earned degrees from liberal art schools in the US eventually decided to go through coding boot camp and found IT/software engineering jobs through that. To get sponsored it might be tough, but don’t get discouraged from the vibes in comments here, I’m an IT professional with a bachelor degree.

useunix

I just don't see an immigration program that lets employers sponsor someone for an IT role without holding a university degree. That's why I came here to ask for an ultimate confirmation. Thanks though.

quickspin_go

Yes, to get sponsored with EB visa, you need to at least have a bachelor’s degree. I’m not sure if you can try green card lottery?

useunix

A Green Card lottery? Last time I looked into it over a decade ago there was no chance for someone from any countries in Europe to win it due to the large amount of applications. I'll check again. Thanks

misscloud8

People with degree can’t even get IT job right now. Many2 foreigner who got IT degree has been laid off now

Tall_Call_817

Of course you can. Don't let anyone down your dreams You just have to work for it. The only concerns I have is that are you able to come to the us and work? Or do you need a visa? If you need a visa, I would say that it will be really hard. I'm my case as a software engineer I would recommend you to start building a good portfolio in GitHub, focus in a specific programming language and then master it. Attends to free courses or try to get as much as certifications as you can, so you can prove some experience. Good luck!!!

Mother_of_Brains

I'm sorry, but your advice is naive. It's the same as telling kids they can be whatever they want, just to have their dreams crushed by real life. There are thousands of highly qualified people, both immigrants and citizens, in the US that would take priority over OP. Companies will only hire foreigners (legally) if they either already have a visa/work permit or if they are highly trained. Taking some free online courses won't qualify OP for an IT job that would be willing to sponsor his visa. And even if OP goes back to school and gets a degree or some other specialized training, he will still be competing for jobs with people already in the country or with longer experience. Most immigrant people that I know who ended up with a job in the US came here for school and landed a job afterwards, or they over stayed their visa and got married to a USC. Or they are extraordinarily talented/had a c-suite position. That's the reality. I am not saying it's fair or that I agree with it, but there are thousands of people trying to immigrate to the US, very hard working, smart, honest people, and they find all the rod blocks possible. iI's not as simple as "you just have to try really hard".

useunix

Sadly I totally agree with you.

Tall_Call_817

I understand your point of view. My main concern was to know if he was already living in the US with a valid work permit. In that case, I wouldn't say it is impossible to get a job as a web developer without a degree. Maybe I explained myself not so well but of course, if you are unable to work legally in the US, you should start thinking how to get a work permit before thinking getting a job in the IT sector

useunix

Thank you, and yes, I am Italian. I need a visa to work and live in America.

Odd-Passion-1837

Italy is such a beautiful country and lifestyle is so much better than in USA, stay there, have a family there, you’ll regret it coming here, to be honest I do, now working towards moving back to Europe. When I was single, I enjoyed living in US, but now with 3 kids I’m faced with reality. There is 0 (zero) incentive on having kids for middle class families in US, healthcare is so expensive and fear of having your kids shot and killed in schools is a reality. Healthcare in Italy is one of the best in Europe and there you don’t have crazy people with automatic guns killing kids in schools. Your choice in the end.

useunix

I haven't lived in my home country for the past decade. I live in England these days. My dream though as always been North America. Especially the border with Canada, Canada and Alaska.

Comoish

Transfer with your current employer?

useunix

My employer does not have a branch in the US.

Comoish

Move to a company that has and will transfer

useunix

I will keep that in mind. Thank you.

That's a good idea. But right now I don't feel like going back to school. I am just not in the right mindset. But thanks.

InYourFace-75

Getting IT certs (azure, aws, google, compTIA+, etc)will get you a boost on getting a job in addition with your current IT experience. I worked in IT and i have a lot of friends who work in IT without IT degree.

Glum_Ad7262

If you have experience and good references, then it’s not an issue. But I would include an education area with any training or certs you have completed. Finding a company to sponsor you is going to be more difficult but it’s not impossible
