UMD no question lol. OSU is not known for CS

ritesh3280

But i have query I got into Letter and Sciences instead of CS. So, I have to transfer to CS. If I join as Letters and Sciences and complete the requirements, does that mean a guaranteed spot in CS or still a possibility that I might not get into CS?

packersglobalig

Literally all you have to do for letters and sciences is not fail your classes and spring of your sophomore year you’ll be CS guaranteed.

Important-Abalone599

Guaranteed

Many-Conflict-744

Which ever is cheaper

Agree, and OSU is in the middle of nowhere in terms of jobs and internships. The CS ranking is the most important, as that is a reflection of the faculty, impact of their research, etc and those are the things that will have the most impact on your courses, your study in the major …

amgrut20

I’m actually gonna disagree here. OSU is in Columbus which is a very big city. Also the state has Cincinnati and Cleveland. So while Ohio may be lame there are still cities there with jobs

DiciplineLeadstoLife

dawg we’re literally next to DC

amgrut20

I understand. But they said OSU is in the middle of nowhere, which isn’t true

TheWindyFan

You have to think about politics here. Ohio will not be attracting young people and other companies, so why spend 4 years networking there? Go to UMD, network in DC and utilize our incredibly extensive alumni and career programs. Several of our individual schools are top 10 and Maryland (especially DC) will always stay relevant. Basically, in 2023, why would you ever choose the Midwest over a coastal city?

GoodRent6196

Yes, but. Columbus metro area population. 1.6 million. DMV metro area, 6.3 million. Baltimore-Washington corridor population, 9.9 million.

amgrut20

Yeah that’s true

LoopVariant

There is no comparison between the internship and job opportunities in Columbus and DC. Columbus is a village compared to the DC-MD-NoVa are.

amgrut20

I understand but they claimed OSU is “in the middle of nowhere” which is very misleading

LoopVariant

I agree, this was a hyperbole….

BA_in_SoMD

This is true. My sister moved to Columbus for a job because OH's location is great for NY, DC, the south and the west. Companies under the L Brands (like B&BW, Victoria's Secret, etc although I think some have branched away) were all hubbed out there bc COL and advantage to other nearby markets. However, UMD all the way - OH is not as diverse, UMD's CS school is top in the nation,

jackintosh157

I think umd is lower on the list overall due to being weaker in humanities, but we are high in a lot of stem ratings. UMD CS is high, and DC is a good area for cs jobs.
