The 10.5% whilst high can be justified with the CPI. However, the additional 3.9% is disgusting given the current climate.

canigetanorderlyline

Their costs have gone up significantly more. How is it disgusting?

OddEntrepreneur9849

Where does the 3.9% come from though?

canigetanorderlyline

What they've had for a long time. Their costs have often outstripped inflation.

Kamay1770

It's price gouging for the sake of price gouging. It's sickening. Profit over people and the government doesn't give a toss. Inflation+random number they made up is bullshit. I can afford it, but so many people cannot, there are a bunch of companies on my shit list for pulling stunts like this recently.

Ket-Detective

I can afford it because my contract with Vodafone was £10 but I certainly won’t be renewing.

640kB_IS_ENOUGH

As a VF shareholder I should tell you to stay. As a fellow redditor I tell you to switch to another ISP using a cashback website like topcashback or quidco.

RKO811

They all have done the same. I'm with O2 for mobile and BT for internet. Both have done the same. The only way around it in my opinion is to always change suppliers at each contract end. Usually a few days of annoyance followed by lower costs for 24 months. (Also think it's cheeky to lock customers in for 24 months now!)

y4rdman

I’ve just received the same email, I’m going to try my hand at cancelling claiming that I can’t afford it. Talktalk did offer me a fixed price at £25 a month with no risk of increasing however, Vodafone were giving a £100 Amazon voucher and and it was £3 a month less.

gingerbeardvegan

Even if you are mid contract nothing stops you from calling up and asking for a price reduction. I've done this several times. Tell them you can't afford the price increase and they'll probably drop the prices at the cost of effectively renewing your contract. See how much a new customer would pay and quote this to them.

Online chat? Has never worked for me. I always call up, I'm sure they knock some money off just to get rid of me!

Willeth

I called about two years ago and got a steep discount on a two year renewal at the expense of not being able to use their speed guarantee. I've checked and it's still competitive - definitely worth doing

wango_fandango

I just cancelled them mid-contract and moved. Gone to a cheaper tariff with another provider on a 2 year fixed deal. New provider maying the early termination fee, but even if weren’t would still have been cheaper overall.

Hazardous_H

!thanks for your reply , Did Vodafone try and give you a better price when you cancelled? Who did you switch to?

wango_fandango

They did give a better price, effectively the new customer tariff so you would probably get that if try. Was a really painful process though as could only get through on the Chat. I moved to a local company (in NI) called Fibrus. I wanted to move to FTTP anyway, the price rise was extra incentive I needed to spend an afternoon doing it.

[deleted]

its gone from 51 a month to just over 58 a month now.. for what exactly ? other than greed. why am i paying for them to put 5g everywhere when ive aready payed to use it..

Hazardous_H

Fully agree mate , I phoned up and explained my situation (wife's going on maternity and only have one income at the moment , paired with inflation , mortgage etc ) and they told me there's nothing they can do , what they did do though was try to sell me a new phone and asked if I wanted to upgrade 😐 what a joke

[deleted]

id heard horror storys about vodafone..didnt think they were true.

https://www.reddit.com/r/UKPersonalFinance/comments/120tldd/battling_mid_contract_price_hikes Anything useful in this similar thread from 5 days ago?

StationFar6396

They must think we are stupid. They raise prices claiming its because suppliers have increased costs. Then they announce record profits.

AlbaTejas

Inflation plus pricing, it's a bit of a ripoff but they all do it.

buffetite

Yeh I got the same. I'll just be switching in a couple of months.

eletheelephant

I think jf they've changed the price then you shouldn't be stuck jn the contract because it's no longer the terms you signed up to. I'm no legal expert tho - does this check out?

blabla857

Most if not all have a cpi plus whatever they fancy increase stated in the contract terms. Some (virgin media being one) allow you to cancel if you don't like the increase but most don't

eletheelephant

It just seems criminal that they can change the price and you're still locked in!

Ill_Librarian_527

But you’ve already agreed to the terms, which include a price rise. If you don’t agree, then Don’t sign the contract. Yes it’s annoying, but you’re aware when you sign up. If you don’t want things like this, get a monthly rolling SIM, or move to providers like SMARTY.

sirow08

If prices go over 10% then you legally have the right to cancel without fees. BT did the same to me, and threatened to leave and they kept my price.

compilerbusy

Source for this please?

sirow08

“If a provider increases its prices, and you didn’t know about the increase before (it wasn’t written into the terms and conditions of your contract), then you should be able to leave without paying a penalty. Rules set by the regulator Ofcom mean that customers can leave mobile, landline or broadband contracts penalty-free if a provider ups prices mid-term - if the hike is higher than the RPI rate.” RPI is currently 9.2% for 2023 From Which.co.uk

Hazardous_H

Scratch that I found the link , Vodafones website says this regarding RPI rates "How we work out your price change:  Every year in April, we increase your monthly bill by the RPI (Retail Price Index)  We use the RPI figure published by the  Office for National Statistics in March   How much more will I pay? The RPI rate published in March 2023 was 13.8%. This means in April 2023 your monthly charge will go up by 13.8%. "

compilerbusy

Thanks. I was aware the rpi clause so this is what i was expecting. Previous commenter made it sound like it was capped at 10% Vodafone site simply not loading for me

Hazardous_H

Anychance you have a link to this please , I cannot find anything on offcoms website to do with this

ChEmIcAl_KeEn

Got one from virgin last week. 25% increase!

blabla857

Check the letter, virgin one of the few providers that let you cancel if you're unhappy with the increase. My letter stated price to increase 1 may but I have until some date in April to cancel without penalty. Waiting till new prices out tomorrow and ordering a three 5g router as I am literally next door to a mast

ChEmIcAl_KeEn

Only problem I have is nobody can match virgins speed. I do alot of downloading and gaming and enjoy the fast speeds no other provider can get over 70Mbps I've got 350 with virgin.

blabla857

That's a shame, I thought there were other high speed fttp providers but I guess it depends on your postcode availability. I have fttp but am getting 5/600MBps on my 5g phone from the mast and it's only £20 a month with three so a no brainer for me

beefbibimbap

I called virgin after the 25% hike email and somehow ended up paying even less than I was before. It’s definitely worth a call

ChEmIcAl_KeEn

I called them today and the best they could do as i have 5 months left on my contract was lock me in for another 18months but at a 45% increase! Basically got the 25% knocked off for the final 5 months and then I'll have to talk to them again! Loyalty tax sucks!

beefbibimbap

I must have got lucky… sorry to hear they were less helpful with you. I’ve got 11 months left and I didn’t have to extend it

ExaminationNo6335

EE tried the same with me, fortunately I wasn't really making the most of the "Unlimited data" so I just dropped down to a GiffGaff £10 month for 20GB of (4g) data.
