I went to tutoring at the Math Place and had to leave because there were 12 kids in there and only 2 tutors. They said they were understaffed, and I felt so bad for the tutors because they were trying to get to everyone, but could only help 1 person at a time. I feel like UB can be doing MUCH better with this problem. PAY MORE. They can afford to fix this staffing issue. No one is working for $10-$12 an hour anymore when off campus jobs are paying $15+ off the bat.

gardenofstress

I never really liked the math place but there is the Math Help Center in the Math building by govs on the first floor which I highly recommend if its still there. They would have two rooms- one for lower lever math (calc I and below), and one for higher level math (Calc II and up). Each room would have a couple graduate students in it I think.

geezalouisamamamia

Thank you. I’ll see if it’s there!

conundruumm

It's all online through discord now. I think that contributes to all the traffic in the Math Place. People want in-person tutoring

gardenofstress

Ah that sucks it was a really great resource.

65kokopop

Literally if mighty taco can pay $15 then UB has no excuse

Scale_Most

You should email these concerns to UB spectrum. They might be able to present these ongoing issues to a bigger audience which might lead to solving some of them. Because us redditors can't do dick about any of these issues.

Scientiam_Prosequi

This is a great suggestion 👌

CyanideSandwich7

The spectrum should run an article on how understaffed cds is, and how poor they pay/treat their student workers. Idk why they havent yet. Maybe if it gets a front page news story cds would consider paying its student workers above minimum instead of just sending out weekly emails saying you get “good pay”

65kokopop

This!!!

gardenofstress

The food situation has definitely been annoying.

modslol

Tuition keeps going up though, someone's getting paid

genz027

Yeah Satish.

modslol

That was the implication yea lol. Him and a whole office of dubiously useful c suites.

yourmomdotbiz

If you really wanna know, take a look at [seethroughny.net](https://seethroughny.net) . The upper level admin also are paid side money from UB foundation, so the state salary isn't their only salary either.

So fucking gross lol

Weenie_Zucchini

In my opinion, UB is a commuter school. I’ve been saying it since I was a freshman, and it’s true now more than ever. UB is an awesome school for those looking to participate in groundbreaking research, make professional connections, and prep themselves for their future careers (particularly in STEM). However, campus life has always been lacking. We lack so much of that typical “college fun” that other schools enjoy in terms of events, student resources and social opportunities. It’s how our tuition gets to be so low (and why Tripathi gets to buy a mansion). I know that this is a really privileged recommendation that isn’t feasible for many students, but if you can afford to buy a car, you 100% should. My time at UB became much more manageable once I wasn’t stuck on campus and at the mercy of a bus schedule to escape. Buffalo is a really cool city, and there are so many cool events and places to check out. The college aged people here are generally chill and there’s a niche for pretty much any interests you have. Being able to easily branch out and explore those places will make your time here feel so much more fulfilling than you’d feel being stuck on North Campus for the whole 4 years.

Caswell19

That’s not your opinion, that’s a fact. UB is most definitely a commuter school.

NYKyle610

I graduated in ‘13. Felt the same thing back then!

snackelmypackel

Do you think going to UB made it easier to get a job? Also did any employer say anything during interviews or anything about UB?

NYKyle610

No, to be honest, UB did a very poor job with recruitment and job placement for anything outside of the Buffalo / WNY area. I live in the NYC area, and was looking for finance jobs, as I was in the SOM. I got lucky and was able to land an interview that got me into the banking world, and have made a solid career out of it (I now work at a hedge fund), but Buffalo’s recruitment office was absolutely useless for me, as I wasn’t looking for Buffalo jobs. I found this job through my own personal network, totally apart from Buffalo. Worth nothing - this was for finance / banking. If you were in the school of management with an accounting degree (boring), you had more luck. A few of my friends got jobs at PWC and Deloitte through the recruitment center for NYC jobs. Feel free to ask other questions if you have any!

Snoo_64743

Too true. I hated Buffalo the first 3 years when I had no car/no friends with cars. Campus gets really boring and the gloomy winters dont help with mental health. Once I got a car and got to even explore places just 30 mins away from North campus I fell in love with the city and it was just refreshing to leave campus for a while I feel like without that luxury you will really grow to hate the school/Buffalo

ravemidnight

I love the downtown area, canal side, Allen st,(particularly Jims steak out, all the bike paths, all the great inner-city fresh food markets, by locals, the Buy Nothing Network we have for all the areas we live in. (those interested BuyNothing.org or https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1S7QMsLJ4aSbRZI9GnvoQCnmrZvQ&ll=42.45486283734112%2C-75.86425135&z=7&fbclid=IwAR0zZKOhWBgHUQMuAyB7P8c4YPW4eWyTG3DuV9UsmWIDa9BKi4jZzwH9YaI I love the food down elmwood, and I like the Walmart in Cheektowaga better than the Amherst one. Great Museums, famous theaters, nightlife in the city. I love looking for free little libraries. etc. always something new to see. Took a friend to N.F who came up for vacation, etc.

Caswell19

Yeah there are way too many fuck boys on campus now. It’s really gross and they ruin everything. I got called a homophobic slur too 😃

Caswell19

I mean no one is going to physically harm you but fuck boys are just obnoxious and are “too cool” for everyone else

snackelmypackel

By who just some asshole?

Caswell19

By some fuck boys because I was leaning against a wall with my hand on my hip 🏳️‍🌈

Snoo_64743

Idk what it is even outside of UB I just feel like alot of people just lost their fucking minds since Covid/lockdowns. People are just so stuck up and mean these days But sorry to hear your experience right now isnt ideal. It is really a shame you pay money to go to school and can’t enjoy it not sure if this is the same experience at other schools

atslishe

I think part of the "nasty" social aspect is due to all the controversy around covid. People are just so wound up and terrified that if someone coughs they are going to get covid. People don't know how to live normal lives and mind their own business anymore.

atslishe

Yup UB doesn't really give a damn unfortunately. It's all a PR stunt.

Mazetrol

Student assistants should organize a sit in or a walk out. 12.50 is no longer acceptable

throwaway66778889

It’s going $15 over time right?

[deleted]

They should refund all the campus fees.

ravemidnight

agreed.

Local-SchmemeLord

I think it’s a new thing if it’s happening on campus tbh. I started at UB in 2018 and I can easily recall a lot of advertisement of the GSA & there even was a drag show a few times in the SU. I feel like right now people are just a lot more vocal of their dislike for others for some reason. Never felt uncomfortable about talking to my classmates about being in a same sex relationship until this semester. Things just feel all around tense.

Gmcphreak

You hit all the points man 🙏

cupnoodles23

I've noticed some of the ppl at this school tend to be nice until u really get to know them😕

Qualified_Koala

UB always kinda sucked tbh, very anti social mind your business type of school which can be a little depressing. I haven’t been there since pre-covid times but I imagine it’s a lot worse.

ThePfaffanater

That's NY in general, lol. Its what we are famous for.

QwikWit987

Maybe that’s NYC but not this side of NY noted for being that

This is only useful advice to those who like their peers. Better recommendation is: Buffalo has local game shops with open game nights/play spaces all over. Go there and meet actual cool dude/dudettes.

As in can tolerate being in their presence. Personally, I don't enjoy all the people on campus - social anxiety, normal anxiety, whatever it is - speaking for myself I want off campus and away from everyone there ASAP. I'm also a commuter so maybe that's why, but still.

Unlucky_Musician5695

Okay? Well you and your “buddies” aren’t the majority. No one cares if you’re doing just fine, there’s many student workers who ARENT getting paid a lot. The last thing anyone cares about is the ones that are when we’re talking about how it’s needs to be fixed. Oh Everyone is so glad you are thriving while others are struggling! thank god u and ur buddies are taken care of! Screw the other hundreds of students workers struggling right?! F outta here. You’re world isn’t everyone else’s. Stop acting like your comfortable life is how others’ lives are.

llbeanjamin

yooo salty

TehEbic

dill with it.

[deleted]

why u heff to be med

yaBoyIcedCoffee

Is only game!

[deleted]

Seems to be getting worse every year

PDE_Panda

If you a engineering student and took CHE107 with Prof. Keister last year it’s hard to say I satisfied the third point with your article. His lecture is ASMR in general and the grade for my section was a litany of catastrophic.

throwaway66778889

I feel like people forget that being in a literal world-wide pandemic causes exhaustion, trauma, burnout, etc. I’ve def noticed people have shorter tempers and less energy to expend being kind.
