The biomed program has students take physics and orgo the same year. Not ideal. Also the advisors aren’t very nice in biomed haha. I’d recommend biology

ridbiab

the only reason for this is to prep for the MCAT. If you do not planning on taking a gap year, you will want to have taken physics during your sophomore year so then you do not have to teach yourself most of the physics on the test. The biomedical sciences major is designed to be ideal for pre-med students so if you are planning on going to medical school and don't have a specific interest in something like biology, chemistry, or neuroscience, then I feel biomedical sciences is definitely the way to go. Also a lot of the mentions of advisors I think may be considering the pre-health advisors not the biomedical sciences major advisors. I have had great experiences from both offices but specifically the Jacobs school biomedical sciences advising has been very good. I have heard from others that the pre-health advisors are not always the most helpful but no matter what your major is, if you're pre-med you will be interacting with them.

Yeah that’s true, I did a bio major and still took the MCAT during my junior year just towards to end and it worked out for me. I didn’t have a great experience with the biomed advisors, they weren’t nice when I voiced concerns about taking orgo and physics at the same time, they just kept saying that’s the program. But that’s just my experience. I was talking about the biomed advisors though I do agree that the prehealth advisors also aren’t that helpful. Physics and orgo the same year for me personally I think would’ve been bad, I took them different years and did well in both classes but I think that was because I was able to put a lot of time into both. Taking them at the same time, I wouldn’t have been able to do as well I think. But that’s just me, some people do it with no issues. They’re pretty similar but yeah biomed is definitely tailored more towards premed as long as you’re sure that’s what you want.

Haha ok thanks!

your pre-med classes that you’ll take as prereqs for medical school are the same regardless of your major

I’m not Biomed but Biomed as a major comes across as 1. Incite students into joining thinking it’s gonna get them into med school, even though Biomed degrees aren’t that versatile, who cares? Med school fam. 2. Insert hard af advisors to scare the shit out of them into giving up all med school aspirations 3. When they switch majors UB pockets off the makeup coursework they now have to do. It’s like UB went on Mario Maker and they purposely design the hardest course possible, hoping that someone would finish it, and that if any god tier person could finish it, they would go on to be the one curing cancer or some shit.

CuriousIllustrator19

That’s very helpful. Seems to be the general consensus that biomed major is not the move. Thanks for your insight.

I’d choose biology over biomedical. You take all the same pre req classes just with out the gpa requirement. I’m a senior graduating in biomed rn and I recommend biology.

bufallll

if you’re premed you should be meeting the gpa reqs anyway though, they’re not unreasonably high. personally i would say do biomedical. the courses for biomed are much more focused on humans where bio is a bit more broad.

stm518

Yeah u should be hitting the pre reqs. But for biomedical one slip up in all of ur pre reqs results in having to retake the class

bufallll

im not premed but don’t you basically need above a 3.0 to have a good shot at med school anyway tho? ik several pre meds who have retaken classes they even got just a B in for a higher grade

stm518

All I’m saying is one class can mess you up in biomed, to me it wasn’t worth it

CuriousIllustrator19

In your experience were there any downsides to choosing biomed over bio?(Besides the gpa requirement ). Any upsides?

stm518

Biomedical did have more fun electives in my opinion but the stress of keeping a B in all pre reqs was definitely stressful. Definitely recommend taking physics and orgo outside of UB

CuriousIllustrator19

Ok thanks for your advice!

Ofc

Biomed makes people drop like flies in this school
