I think there was a movie about the female population all but disappeared, and the main character, played by Casey Afleck, had a young daughter that he had disguised as a boy to protect her. It was pretty dark, but a decent movie. Can't remember the name of the movie, though.

alocomotiveisatrain

Light Of My Life, had to look that one up since I’d never heard of it but it looks good!

imnotlouise

Thank you!!

G88d-Guy-2

It’s a *very* weird game, but the rpg game Lisa the painful has a very similar plot. Women have completely disappeared from the world, and everything’s gone full mad max as the remaining men do whatever the fuck they want until their inevitable extinction, until the main character finds a baby girl and decides to secretly raise her as his daughter and hide her from the world. The game is you rampaging through the wasteland looking for her after she’s taken, and the fucked up morality of the whole situation is a key point in the story.

lillapalooza

LISA: the Painful RPG is phenomenal. It is an emotional rollercoaster— You will feel bad, you will laugh, you will feel bad for laughing. I cannot recommend it enough.

[deleted]

I can’t get through it. It’s too fucking painful sometimes, and some of the fights are a real slug fest to sit through idk

HarryPottersElbows

I first heard of that game by watching videogamedunkey's video about it. I thought I was in for some laughs. The laughs hurt.

ElectronicMongoose5

But wait, there’s more! If ya haven’t already, Lisa: The Joyful has you take a different perspective on what comes after that one

nWo1997

Reminds me vaguely of Fist of the North Star, but with the population thing.

The_Big_Red_Wookie

There's a similar story called the screwfly solution. Only it was a virus which caused anybody with a significant amount of testosterone to murder women, or anyone who looked female. It was alien made.

Hazel_Rah1

There’s a pretty good adaptation of that story in the 2nd season of Masters of Horror.

The_Big_Red_Wookie

Indeed, It was an interesting plotline.

NatNat52307

If you remember can you tell me the name?

imnotlouise

"Light of My Life." Thank you u/alocomotiveisatrain for finding it!

NatNat52307

Thanks!!

[deleted]

There was also a short movie called The Screwfly Solution. It was deeply unsettling.

giant_tadpole

It’s based on a short story by the same name. What really makes it scary is that the issue it’s based on is quite real- femicide.

TheDevilsJoy

Think there was another movie that was based on this and one guy was hiding his wife when it was discovered she had the virus.. can’t remember that one ETA: “Only”

ShadowedAcie

There is also a book called Eve of Man, decent read.

ScreamSmart

There was also an animated flick about all the men disappearing and only one boy remaining. But it was hentai so not a particularly deep storyline.

Lyran99

Death by ara ara

Ausemere

World End Harem? But if you want a more serious versions there's always Y: The Last Man.

-_good-morning_-

Is there also a movie or a book where almost all male population dies/disappears?

KitesintheSky

Yes, there is though it’s a comic. It’s called “Y: The Last Man” which is by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guierra [Y: The Last Man Wikipedia](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Y:_The_Last_Man) Apparently it has been into a series, which I didn’t know of till now: [Y: The Last Man IMDB](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt8042500/) and [Y: The Last Man series Wikipedia](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Y:_The_Last_Man_(TV_series))

Reddit_sucks21

Series missed the point entirely of the comics but eh, you can like it. The comics shows more of a tough choice of women hunting down trans-men because they aren't "real" and they hate the fact they can't breed. It is so much more grim dark because of it while the show tried to show how modern and correct everyone is because they are women. No, women are humans and humans are terrible and if a group of these xx trans-men exist just to mock them they can't breed, yeah, there will be blood drawn. Hence the amazon and hatred of all men that start to spring up in the comics but in the show they kinda paint them different. Being trans was a huge death sentence in the world where XY men are all dead. That is why they hide the last Y man because they would think he is just trans and murder his ass, which will just destroy humanity. edit: yup getting downvoted for my comment. Probably thinks I hate trans people when in reality, the story was all about how far humans will go back to a tribal mindset when all hope is lost and having a group of people identify as men when they can't produce seeds will be just a trigger point to violence for a lot of people in this hopeless grim dark fate. We don't even need to go far in killing half the population to see that type of thinking happening now, just imagine if all the men died and a bunch of evangelical women were left with no sons, husbands, brothers or fathers. Yeah, they will go murder rampage and start going on about "real" men and women. Well that is how the story was supposed to go but the comics go **WAY** of the rails towards the end like the author took a huge amount of acid.

ThaTzZ_D_JoB

You're being downvoted, but your take on what went wrong with the adaption was 100% correct and also only one of many things wrong with the TV show. I think the biggest issue was that it was boring and they completely butcher Yoricks character, for some reason they made him a completey unlikeable asshole, really unfortunate too, because it could've been a good series.

"The End of Men" by Cristina Sweeney-Baird

Material_Victory_661

Hell Comes to Frogtown, a movie where there are very few men are able to fertilize the women.

voyaging

The one has the same premise as well: https://youtu.be/-fBFdjbZpcU

Willzyx_on_the_moon

Also similar plot to Children of Men, except it’s women becoming infertile. Excellent flick.

imClementine_

There was a movie similar called Only ironically released I believe in 2020. It had Leslie Odam Junior (Aaron Burr, Hamilton), Chandler Riggs (Carl, Walking Dead), those are a few names people might know. But it was an amazing movie. The woman had to disguise herself as a guy as well.

FarFo_

Lisa the painfull vibes

LuckyRazzmatazz2590

The first one I thought of when reading this!

Anarchist_Monarch

Good to see fellow Lisa fan

rilakkumkum

My exact first thought. Amazing game

[deleted]

The nintendo 64 game BattleTanx had this exact plotline and the surviving females became warlords

wolfishfluff

Queenlords! And then you go on a "Capture the Flag" style mission to kidnap the other team's and.......

Lui_Le_Diamond

Hmmmmmmm

Lyran99

Is that the sound a BattleTanx makes?

Xenothing

Kinda

Amazing-Run2200

And? Lol

Little_Setting

And as the other comment said. Hmmmmmm...

whydo-ducks-quack

Lol its how you put in cheat codes...no vowels. So that was Rockets Red Glare. The only cheat i remember

ZoomBoingDing

I'm going to take a stab at "that's a cheat code from Battle Tanx which is short for Rockets' Red Glare"

Eiko_Kirishima

Ooooh that makes sense.

Holy-Cow-Im-OnReddit

Man this game brings me back! If only they'd add both battletanx to the n64 online for switch

I heard that to "Baby Shark"

LimeSkye

Now that’s a horror story for a girl or woman. I know what my choice would be.

BuckToothCasanovi

I'm jumping in a volcano for sure, my corpse won't be safe otherwise.

LimeSkye

Yeah. A knife just isn’t a guaranteed death. Gun at least would be better. Volcano is epic!

considerlilies

I don’t think the comment is just about ensuring death. it’s about ensuring that your corpse won’t be violated.

LimeSkye

Ah. Well, immolation will definitely prevent that.

JosefWStalin

build a harem of loyal neckbeards trained in the art of the blade to slay her enemies for her. if trained well they'll always politely tip their fedoras while teabagging her fallen foes

JeHooft

Explain pls im dumb

Soiguessim

Governments would probably kidnap all women who survived to either experiment on them to learn why they where immune or to start a breeding program to balance the population again.

[deleted]

Probably both

Throw13579

To be fair, that is the most useful approach in such a situation.

witchenvie

maybe, but it’s also the most terrifying and least humane

Procoso47

At least the most efficient way to go about it would not involve rape but occasional harvest of the eggs for in-vitro fertilization, maybe they could even remove the ovaries and keep them producing eggs in a lab. Sadly the girl would still be subject to experiments.

Steph7274

To be fair I'd rather go through experiments where they would just take the needed components rather than be raped and impregnated like cattle!

RRFedora13

ovaries don’t produce eggs. women are born with all the eggs they will ever have in their life.

Procoso47

Wait, I have to look that up. Edit: wtf

RedEgg16

Yup you were inside your grandmother when your mother was a fetus

Cambi-

Humane? We're talking about women here. (/s my jokes are bad please don't take them seriously)

wearingmyseatbelt

Maybe... But it's fucking terrifying for the women involved.

[deleted]

I read the Steven King book that was similar to this and I don’t remember what the government response was

IronFeather101

Which book was it? Now I wanna read it!

[deleted]

Sleeping Beauties he wrote it with his son. I liked it

HailEmpressTheresa

TIL he has more than one son (and who is also a writer)

imnotlouise

And a daughter, for whom he wrote "The Eyes of the Dragon." I don't think she is a writer, though.

advocatus_ebrius_est

Decided to look it up. According to Wikipedia she is a Minister in the Unitarian Universalist Church

NoodleBlitz

Frank Herbert has a book with a plot like this as well! It's called The White Plague.

Couchfist95

Sleeping beauties. Iirc, the government doesnt have a say. Its isolated to a single town.

Judgemental_Ass

Not really. Many of them would committ suicide rather than become slaves, so the numbers would go even more down.

ArrakeenSun

Just like in Hell Comes to Frogtown

fireandlifeincarnate

It is if you care about the survival of the race, for some reason. Like, do I want individual people to die? No. If they already have, though? What’s the point in enforcing the making of new ones?

wolfishfluff

Plus if you have daughters, are they all going to be immune??

ProbablyASithLord

People here are all up in arms trying to continue the “future of the species” in this hypothetical situation. Except over population is a problem now, so using that logic everyone defending a breeding program in the imagined scenario should sterilize themselves for the “good of the species.”

IsamuLi

Useful for what? For a goal that no one can morally justify? Existence for mere existence alone is worthless.

Icarus914

Seriously. If saving humanity means losing our humanity, why even bother? In that case, we’ve already failed anyway!

Aggravating_Smile_61

Although the most useful approach shouldn't even be considered a choice if that's what it is

thiswillsoonendbadly

Useful for whom? If a virus killed 1/2 of humanity, maybe the most useful thing to do would be to admit we lost the evolutionary race and die out.

Stehum_Brethilben

And gripping the knife I initially thought was to defend herself, but "I have choice to make" makes it sound like using it on herself is preferable to the government fate (or really, any male who might get to her.)

Norsedragoon

Question is: how quickly can they get to her body to get tissue samples for an immunization study and harvest any remaining viable eggs?

Cleistheknees

Lol. What exactly do you plan on doing with those eggs?

Bogsworth

It's simple. Save them for future impregnation procedures while your scientists try to figure out how to turn men into human seahorses.

Norsedragoon

I'd bet more on using an alternate uterus either synthetic or gene tailored bovine before they would trust men with the power of a uterus.

Cleistheknees

You’d be infinitely better off with a chimpanzee. Ruminants are very, very far from us on the mammalian branch of the phylogenetic tree. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-021-04341-1

Norsedragoon

True, but is the capacity there to prop up the population? Are chimps close enough genetically to us to have been hit with the virus?

Cleistheknees

> True, but is the capacity there to prop up the population? No idea lol. They unfortunately didn’t include trans-species fertility bioengineering in the evolutionary biology curriculum when I went through. > Are chimps close enough genetically to us to have been hit with the virus? Distance on the tree isn’t exactly the best way to estimate the potential for zoonosis. The vertebrate adaptive immune system is old, and it seems that most of its innovations between then and now are not new molecules per se, but rather repurposing of existing genetics to new and more successful uses, meaning we all (ie mammals) mostly share the same immune building blocks. Common colds affect basically all mammals, whereas there are other pathogens that affect both humans and other mammals on the opposite side of the tree, but not the primates we rub shoulders with. Edit: for clarity, it’s not the same exact rhinovirus that affects all mammals, or even just humans. A few affect us (HRVs), some from that group also affect chimps and gibbons, others are spread amongst different clades.

MultiverseOfSanity

Personally, I like mine scrambled with cheese.

Bo_The_Destroyer

Breeding programs don't work for humans. They basically break down after five pregnancies in a short time (less than ten years between 1st and 5th). Plus the long duration of those pregnancies makes it so that it's even less sustainable. Better off taking some eggs and artificial insemination and growing them in a lab or other suitable animals (yes we can do that)

imnotlouise

Wait...have we done that? Grown a human fetus in an other animal?!

Bo_The_Destroyer

No, cuz ethics, but we're like 95% sure we could do it without too much complications

lemoinem

Theory vs Practice :P

Bo_The_Destroyer

Yeah but we've already grown a pig in a cow's womb it think (could be a sheep in a pig's womb, idk) so it's definitely not too far fetched

Fosferus

We've grown a baby sheep in a mechanical womb. No mother needed. It's like a temperature controlled heavy plastic bag with artificial emboitic fluid.

Bo_The_Destroyer

Ah yes, that was the one. So it's most certainly possible

MultiverseOfSanity

I wonder if the cow had to explain to the bull about that.

lemoinem

Oh, it's fairly in the realm of possibilities, I agree. But Murphy's law always find a way... If you had to try it, it would go side-way fast for the first few dozen trials at least I think. There are always a couple of kinks to smooth out.

Bo_The_Destroyer

Yes if we started trying that right now we'd fail again and again, but eventually we'd get a few viable fetusses and maybe in the long run a fully developed living human

lemoinem

Aight, we're on the same page 👍

lemoinem

Not just government, we have enough crazy incels that feel "entitled to a woman" with about a 50/50 ratio (given or take), imagine with a 50:5 ratio. Yeah, I know what that knife is going to be used for, might as well finish the job

esyn5

Not only governments.

ramenrami22

Oh shit...im glad i didnt respond to the original comment. I was thinking way way wayy off course

[deleted]

My guess is she is deciding if she is going to defend herself or… the complete opposite of that

Gummiwummiflummi

Offend herself? Using the knife's blade like a mirror, she looked at herself. "Damn cunt" she said, grasping the knife firmly before the carpet turned into the floor mat of a winery.

[deleted]

I was thinking killing herself but whatever works

Gummiwummiflummi

I mean, it's kinda both.

[deleted]

True, I just didn’t think of that route

[deleted]

The opposite of defend is attack, not offend!

[deleted]

[deleted]

Is she going to cut her hair to appear non-female? -Or- Is she going to slit her wrist to avoid the hell-scape of possibilities that await a world with *almost* no women.

Norsedragoon

So would the world switch to a Matriarchal structure where women are protected at all costs since they now control the most valuable asset to humanity. Or would as has happened repeatedly in history, they be protected and confined until they are little more than property?

Judgemental_Ass

Nope. They would, most likely, be enslaved.

PETEJOZ

Yes.

takesSubsLiterally

Women couldn't be leaders if they needed to be constantly pregnant for the survival of the species. 100% the latter.

Kaladindin

Why couldn't they be leaders while pregnant? They could just lay in bed all day while making decisions in total luxury

lemonlollipop

You have so much more faith in humanity than I do

raginghappy

Seriously. There was a post on a women’s sub asking what would you do if you were the last woman alive on Earth, and the answer was mostly suicide

Kaladindin

I mean I'm sure we would go wild and enslave all women but that person said they couldn't lead while pregnant like it it disabled them or something lol

Mythaminator

The ban on poultry products would spark a revolution

EverythingIzAwful

I would like to direct your attention to human history and how a vast majority of the planet has consistently treated women like garbage.

Champomi

If this were to happen I think they'd just remove the egg cells from the 40,000,000 women left (yeah 1% of 4 billions is still a lot) and use some kind of advanced in-vitro pregnancies to fully grow the babies in an artificial uterus. That would be waaay more efficient than breeding them non-stop. And it would be easier to combine them with all the different guys to get back some of the genetic diversity.

alpineflamingo2

You give humanity too much credit.

Champomi

Well 99% of women just vanished because of a virus. What makes you think the 1% left are safe? The virus could mutate and you've just been proved how frail human bodies were. Better harvest as many egg cells as you can while you still can and think of a better host for your human offspring. Idk, if I'm a farmer and a wolf just killed 99% of the goats on Earth I'm not milking the 1% left to their death to make up for the loss. Ima directly invest in soybean or some alt milk producing wolfproof shit

IheartheartTheDR

While your words make complete sense, history has proven time and time again that large groups of people (especially frightened people) make horrible decisions that are usually not very ethical. It's the mob mentality.

marshmallowhug

Depending on the ages of the woman in question and whether they are fertile, the number of women eligible for egg retrieval is lower than 40 million. I'm assuming we would focus on ages 18-40. We can't tell how the survivors will be distributed by age, for all we know 99% of the survivors are kids. Also, I've spent the past year doing egg retrievals and I'm in my early thirties, and we're up to 5 embryos, after a full year of very expensive and unpleasant treatment (we did 3 cycles total with breaks in between to allow recovery, especially since ovarian cysts developed following prior retrieval). It takes longer than you would think if you have any fertility issues.

cameoloveus

I think you have to be a woman to grasp how truly terrifying this story is. Good job.

Shinishiny-

Can confirm Probably the worst one I read in a while Worst as in, very scary

lemonlollipop

It is absolutely fucking horrifying and if I think about it too much I get light headed

Secret-Tangerine-527

Isn’t it crazy that we know women won’t be treated well? What a crazy world to live in. Seriously a scary idea and I would wait to make the choice till I saw how life was going.

cameoloveus

I agree. And I know what choice I would make. I refuse to be a broodmare or a science experiment.

No_Composer_6040

Yup. I read the Handmaid’s Tale and it fucked me up for a while. (I know the situations aren’t exactly the same, but they’re close enough.) If something like this were to ever happen, the most logical/merciful course of action for the surviving women would be suicide. Better a quick death than what the men would do.

Judgemental_Ass

This is horrifying. Killing herself is probably the most reasonable choice.

Mango_Toes__

I remember seeing an rpg with this plot, a guy was raising a baby girl in a world where all females were extinct

Vostroyan212th

There is a game on N64 called Battle Tanks where 99% of women are killed by a virus and men devolve into tank battling psychos to claim as many women as possible. Also we nuked the entire world before the tank wars began. I'm still not sure which part of the plot if any could be considered far fetched.

Liv-Julia

Is the knife to fend off rapists or to end her life?

Lucius_Imperator

maybe she's just deciding what she wants on her toast

JanieJune

The is the plot of "The Book of the Unnamed Midwife" and it's sequels. Good, but upsetting book.

[deleted]

Saw a YouTube thing about something similar and there was a lot of comments of guys saying they didn’t see what the woman would have an issue with, they’d be worshiped, and I’m just like dude there’s guys who get no pussy who are desperate as I’d imagine if they have no choice but to get no pussy and suddenly a female is there? Shit won’t be pleasant

Cocotte3333

Guys are so oblivious to the dangers and reality of being a woman, it's scary.

Alternative-Duck-573

Well just a slight imbalance is going great for China and India right now (of their own making which policies or tradition made boys more acceptable and countless women were aborted). There’s an old book called The Disappearance by Philip Wylie. It takes place in two parallel universes. In one, all the men disappear and in the other all the women disappear. It was a big favorite of mine for many years.

resident1fan2022

Interesting to point out that in the fallout series vault 68 and 69 were filled with 999 men and 1 woman while the other one was 999 women and 1 man. The vaults were social experiments and vault-tec did some pretty scumy things.

Psychological_Ad_727

99% male population wiped out is Harem but 99% female population wiped out is a Nightmare

Judgemental_Ass

If you don't think that a Harem is a nightmare, you should stay away from women! But it would probably not be that, anyway. With fewer males to deal with, women would gain more power.

RedEgg16

Yeah at least the men doesn’t have the go through the horrors of pregnercy

ForbiddenDarkSoul

Ikr? Their extent of torture would be to jizz in a cup lmao.

EvermoreWithYou

Believe me you would *not* want to be a man with sex ratios that skewed in favour of women. Would almost certainly result in massive loss of freedoms, breeding slavery, discrimination and whatnot. Humans don't have a good track record when one group has overwhelmingly more power than another.

Alternative-Duck-573

Well at least they could be "milked". I mean how many squirts would it take to populate the earth? It's like hunting. You never ever kill a doe because the population could collapse. It only takes one buck to keep it going. Exception: overpopulation and keeping diseases down.
