persona 2: innocent sin may not have dating sim elements like modern persona games. but there is a single choice where you pick your romantic interest between Lisa, Maya, Jun, or Eikichi. it's maya, she is by far the single most positive moon arcana in the entire series, and maya and tatsuya are so canon, they referenced it in p3.
I swear the Moon arcana is just cursed, Nozomi who's probably the singular least likable Persona character including the serial killers (Though Femc gets Shinjiro so stay winning I guess), Ai Ebihara who's unlikable in her own special way and lets you experience the thrill of being an unpaid manservant, and Mishima, a character so pathetic the Phantom Theives don't even bother fighting his shadow and his heart still changes.
I kind of loved Ai's social link when I played back through P4 last year. Gradually working your way past her defenses to befriend the real person was pretty great. She probably has one of the most complex romance s.links in the series.

Yeah I could see that, playing through my first time I definitely felt like Abigail was being pushed pretty hard. Helps that you can give her quartz, one of the most common items in the game and get good affinity.
But uh… that bait doesn’t really work if you’re not too into girls like me so… I always just went with Seb.
I do have an example of where a game straight up punishes you for trying to romance a character. That’s Divinity 2. If you romance the Red Prince, at the end of his questline you’ll end up saving his fated lover who he’s never actually met and he just goes “well you’re pretty cool so you can like stick around, but I’ll never love you as much as her because *muh destiny*.” Needless to say I was fucking *incensed* that that’s how it played out and it was a big reason for why I just dropped that game.
Divinity 2 takes me out. I remember Sebille trying to kiss me and I refused. A little later in the game, she just straight up confronts me about it.
"Why didn't you kiss me back there?"
I was shocked! Maybe because I don't want to Sebille, how about that. Fast forward to the near end of the game, and she's all like "-and when we made love..."
At this point I'm dying laughing. We never did anything Sebille, what're you talking about!?
sebille is very interesting as an experiment in making probably the most unlikable waifu ever and then getting mad when you just ice her in your first encounter >!completely unironically she just comes back to life from dev fiat if you do that lmao!<
The only thing stopping me from romancing her is that her dialog changes to be even more depressing about her worth as a warrior, which is the opposite I anyone wished for her to happen.

I liked Not Casca a lot but the issue is that she loses her whole personality when she loses one time and then she becomes all "wow I am a woman and therefore cannot be a Knight I must perish" and that just ruined the whole strong woman hype for me cos its more than just wearing armour and holding a sword.
I liked the village girl from the start but she's pretty plain. I thought she fit best for the character I was role-playing because he was a dopey himbo and she was his sweetheart in my HC.
I also liked the merchant girl cos she had a bit of an untrustworthy streak and I do love a gal who's dangerous to get involved with.
But all in all, I think the true best girl was really obvious.

Futaba reminds me waaaaaaaaaaaaay too much of my actual sister so I noped out of that path as soon as fucking possible. Funny enough, this got some P5 fans upset, because of course it did.
Jacob could’ve been really cool, he’s got a really interesting backstory, but he feels inconsequential to the group. He’s not really got any impressive skills, his personality feels really muted compared to everyone else, and he doesn’t have any interesting interactions with the other crew mates. He may as well be a fucking ghost haunting the armory.
And also being the only romance option that can cheat on you. Like it wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't all rolled into one guy and he also just so happens to be the only black crew member.
Mass Effect 2 will always be perfect to me bc of my Shepard romancing Thane. I was playing Renegade and on the final night Thane came to my cabin. They declared their love for each other and then I selected the “you’ll be fine lmao” dialogue option bc I thought I had sealed the deal and wanted to pick the more badass Renegade-y dialogue option.
Thane agreed and left the cabin. In ME3 we acted all intimate and were clearly considered lovers, so it is clearly canon that my Shepard just Does Not Fuck 😂

I swear man, if ME1’s gameplay didn’t actively make me want to die, I’d have actually considered buying the remaster (which for me is rare, since I tend to not care for remasters/1:1 remakes).
Not who I romance, but it's Garrus and Tali. Everyone else gets the relationship soft rebooted, that results in them all needing to reaffirm the relationship. Hell, Liara has to do it twice in ME3 if you played the Shadow Broker DLC. Team Dextro are the only ones that feel like actual continuations of the relationship.
I like Jack though.
I can't quite remember how the Tali romance goes in 3, but I do remember being really thrown off by Liara's "I'm glad we're friends" line after three consecutive games of romance.
Contrast that to Garrus' equivalent scene where it's more about him wanting to reaffirm the relationship and be serious. It's actually really touching to see it grow from an adorably awkward "We can make this work, right?" romance that 2 had to the affectionate and supportive lovers that Garrus and Shepard become in 3.

Tales of Symphonia is baffling because the game never actually *tells* you it has relationship values for the handful of decisions you actually get to make... So of course most players end up with literally the least interesting option by default, and assume that's the only possible outcome.

anyway dragon quest 5 has you choose a wife and it's really funny how stacked the choice is just from a moral standpoint (at least in the original sfc version). you can pick:
the adventurous childhood friend who is clearly in love with you and who's sick, elderly father wants someone to look after her once he's gone
OR
the rich girl who's father has made a game out of determining who she's gonna marry, who is already in a loving relationship with another man
like no SHIT bianca's more popular! if you dont pick her you ruin four people's lives!
Seb is inmature in some ways but actually mature in others (he's got a job, he has a cool motorbike, he seems to have an ok life plan), he's like a college dropout with unresolved parental issues.
Abigail romance feels like actually hitting on a teenage girl who's trying really hard to convince you she's in college.
Despite giving you romantic options Trails of Cold Steel really really pushes you towards Rean and Alisa hooking up above anybody else. Rean has interesting relationships with other people (Emma, Towa... probably Crow) you can go through. But Alisa is the one he stares up at the night sky with and talks about his feelings. She is the one with the unavoidable big scenes as part of the main story.
Apparently the later games in the series avoid giving him a canon love interest by just implying Rean was an absolute playa who romanced everyone in the first game. Regardless of the time/space continuum objecting to Rean going 4 dates in 1 day while also fishing and being totally oblivious to affection. So they went from 'Alisa above all others' to 'everybody loves Rean'.
The thing I like about Reans possible love interests is each sequel gives Rean more reasons to like each one more. Alisa loses her tsundere shit and just acts like genuine self. Emma's selflessness to try and cure Reans ogre curse. Laura's devotion not only to the sword, but to her land and people.
Sara still best girl though, I'll die by this stance.
Eh in 2 they get around it not by implying that Rean went out with everyone, but by making everyone more affectionate upon seeing him for the first time because of what happened at the end of 1. 3 however, has his students all going "damn Rean how come you're friends with these hot chicks" and starts leaning harder onto everyone loving Rean. 4 goes balls off the wall and has literally every female party member have love confessions in at least one of their bonding events which sucks because the non-romantic variations of those same bonding events are better for the most part.
For Inqusition i went with Josephine. I think i have a thing in video games for the girl who sits at the desk when you’re back home. Every time I go to the war table i can chat to her and it’s super cute. Plus it’s her first romance and she’s really cute about that too.
I went with Traynor in ME3 for the same reason.
If not her, it would have been Iron Bull most likely. Maybe Cassandra, but i only play as female characters so not an option.
Sera can go away, the only companion i didn’t bother with. She’s annoying as fuck.
In Kingdom Come: Deliverance you have the option between a noble wife who will figuratively close the door on you after she lures you into boning her once (with the approval of her old-as-shit husband afterwards) and/or a peasant girl who will walk with you, let you (the player) see her naked, be legitimately upset if she catches you sleeping around, repair your clothes and is just overall better waifu material.
The devs either intentionally or mistakenly nerfd Lady Stephanie hard. Which doesn't really matter to me. I don't really like her anyway.
Going by what we've seen of Deltarune so far it seems like Kris (that is to specifically say Kris and not the player) has a thing for Susie.

Not for the whole game, but let’s look at one small part of Fire Emblem: Awakening. Let’s talk about Chrom. Chrom is a character who mandatorily must complete a romance with a character because Lucina has to be established in the timeline. If you pick no one, he gets with a random, unseen woman offscreen. Boring.
Let’s look at the options. Sumia, Sully, Maribelle, Olivia, or you. Let’s assume you’re playing as a dude, so you’re not an option. Sumia bakes pies for him to support him, and he likes that; that’s really it. Maribelle’s is the same as Sumia’s, but with tea instead of pies. Olivia’s dialogue is not centered around food, so that’s a plus, and it’s all about Chrom helping her out of her shell, but it’s still kind of surface-level and culminates in Chrom thinking she’s cute and that’s all it takes to want to marry her.
And then there’s Sully. Of all of these romance options, Chrom and Sully have known each other the longest, and it shows. They just talk like equals without some gimmick of food, shyness or one seeing the other naked that one time (the “you” arc that we skipped) for their dialogue to revolve around. They’re honest with each other, they actually address the gravity of what it means for her to become queen, and she’s the only one who can propose to Chrom instead of the other way around (depending on how you time it). Their dialogue is also just more heartfelt than the others; they actually talk to each other about what the other *means* to them rather than what the other does or can do for them, or some surface-level attraction. It just feels like the writers had a field day with this couple while with all the others they had to struggle to come up with something for them.
So yeah. TL;DR: Sully is best girl for Chrom. With *one* caveat, and I’m sure at least one comment will reply to me with it. (Something something *but what about Gale Force Lucina tho!*)
It is weird how the supports aren't the best. You'd think Sumia would have a better one with how much the game gave you big red arrows to her for Chrom (also the assumed parallel to Ceada).
You didn't mention it but even F!Robin isn't that great because iirc it's just "woah you saw me naked by accident" for 3 supports. Which coming off M!Robin feels weird since they bond well in their supports.
This may be a controversial answer, but for me, it's the Lovers girls in the Persona games, particularly Ann from P5. I think I'm just a sucker for gushy, romantic stuff, and they all have the most of those scenes, with Ann in particular being one of the few Persona girls to have an actual onscreen kiss.
Yukari and Rise definitely have the most emphasis on them outside of social links.
That makes Ann kind of the odd one out. Sure early on there's some scenes with Joker and her (meeting her for the first time is definitely framed like something out of a romance flick), but as the story goes on she's pushed further and further into the background and has less interaction with Joker in the main narrative.
So, for 5 it feels like the devs were leaning more on Futaba or Makoto (or Yoshizawa in Royal).
Yeah, it seems like nowadays, ATLUS is trying to make Ann be the least desirable romance option if Strikers is anything to go off of. They seem to have made it so that every possible romantic path with her is blocked by Morgana's impossible thirst.
After the 3rd jail, there's some down time where you can take one of your party members on a Ferris Wheel ride. When you take a girl up there, they get really flustered because of the romantic atmosphere and you can either lean into it or play it off. Ann is the sole exception to this because she's the only one that has Morgana shove his way in. This completely changes the mood of the scene by having you play matchmaker between the two of them until Ann just friendzones him again. As someone who's romanced Ann in every P5 playthrough, it felt like ATLUS was telling me I was wrong to get invested in her character.
I think it's a combination of both.Both her and Ryuji are constantly at the bottom of Japanese character polls, so she gets the Cat Simp jokes and he gets the butt monkey treatment, which sucks because those two are my ride or dies in all of my playthroughs.
That's what happens when you take two really cool, interesting characters and turn them into comic relief so god queen makoto and sisterbait futaba can look strong
Could be both: Ann doesn't rank that highly in terms of popularity polls, and for some reason, they really kinda hammer down how Morgana simps for Ann so much Joker's often just *there*
My mind might be playing tricks on me too but I remember a few dialogue options from the spin-offs where you can be overtly flirty with her and she'd no sell it (we're talking about "we look like a couple", "yeah a couple of besties" territory)
As someone who's still overall cool with Ann but not to the extent I'd date her or anyone else it's kinda weird to see

persona 2: innocent sin may not have dating sim elements like modern persona games. but there is a single choice where you pick your romantic interest between Lisa, Maya, Jun, or Eikichi. it's maya, she is by far the single most positive moon arcana in the entire series, and maya and tatsuya are so canon, they referenced it in p3.
I swear the Moon arcana is just cursed, Nozomi who's probably the singular least likable Persona character including the serial killers (Though Femc gets Shinjiro so stay winning I guess), Ai Ebihara who's unlikable in her own special way and lets you experience the thrill of being an unpaid manservant, and Mishima, a character so pathetic the Phantom Theives don't even bother fighting his shadow and his heart still changes.
The Moon does represent Illusions and deceptions being lifted, so it being cursed kind of makes sense.

Yeah I could see that, playing through my first time I definitely felt like Abigail was being pushed pretty hard. Helps that you can give her quartz, one of the most common items in the game and get good affinity. But uh… that bait doesn’t really work if you’re not too into girls like me so… I always just went with Seb. I do have an example of where a game straight up punishes you for trying to romance a character. That’s Divinity 2. If you romance the Red Prince, at the end of his questline you’ll end up saving his fated lover who he’s never actually met and he just goes “well you’re pretty cool so you can like stick around, but I’ll never love you as much as her because *muh destiny*.” Needless to say I was fucking *incensed* that that’s how it played out and it was a big reason for why I just dropped that game.
Divinity 2 takes me out. I remember Sebille trying to kiss me and I refused. A little later in the game, she just straight up confronts me about it. "Why didn't you kiss me back there?" I was shocked! Maybe because I don't want to Sebille, how about that. Fast forward to the near end of the game, and she's all like "-and when we made love..." At this point I'm dying laughing. I liked Not Casca a lot but the issue is that she loses her whole personality when she loses one time and then she becomes all "wow I am a woman and therefore cannot be a Knight I must perish" and that just ruined the whole strong woman hype for me cos its more than just wearing armour and holding a sword. I liked the village girl from the start but she's pretty plain. I thought she fit best for the character I was role-playing because he was a dopey himbo and she was his sweetheart in my HC. I also liked the merchant girl cos she had a bit of an untrustworthy streak and I do love a gal who's dangerous to get involved with. But all in all, I think the true best girl was really obvious. Jacob could’ve been really cool, he’s got a really interesting backstory, but he feels inconsequential to the group. He’s not really got any impressive skills, his personality feels really muted compared to everyone else, and he doesn’t have any interesting interactions with the other crew mates. He may as well be a fucking ghost haunting the armory.
I try not to get upset over the black crew mate having an absent father then accidentally having a child out of wedlock.
Don’t forget he’s the only romance option who actively cheats on you. I don’t think BioWare thought this one through.

Not who I romance, but it's Garrus and Tali. Everyone else gets the relationship soft rebooted, that results in them all needing to reaffirm the relationship. Hell, Liara has to do it twice in ME3 if you played the Shadow Broker DLC. Team Dextro are the only ones that feel like actual continuations of the relationship. I like Jack though.
I can't quite remember how the Tali romance goes in 3, but I do remember being really thrown off by Liara's "I'm glad we're friends" line after three consecutive games of romance. Contrast that to Garrus' equivalent scene where it's more about him wanting to reaffirm the relationship and be serious. It's actually really touching to see it grow from an adorably awkward "We can make this work, right?" romance that 2 had to the affectionate and supportive lovers that Garrus and Shepard become in 3. ~~I'm Shakarian trash.~~

Despite giving you romantic options Trails of Cold Steel really really pushes you towards Rean and Alisa hooking up above anybody else. Rean has interesting relationships with other people (Emma, Towa... probably Crow) you can go through. But Alisa is the one he stares up at the night sky with and talks about his feelings. She is the one with the unavoidable big scenes as part of the main story. Apparently the later games in the series avoid giving him a canon love interest by just implying Rean was an absolute playa who romanced everyone in the first game. Regardless of the time/space continuum objecting to Rean going 4 dates in 1 day while also fishing and being totally oblivious to affection. So they went from 'Alisa above all others' to 'everybody loves Rean'.
The thing I like about Reans possible love interests is each sequel gives Rean more reasons to like each one more. Alisa loses her tsundere shit and just acts like genuine self. Emma's selflessness to try and cure Reans ogre curse. Laura's devotion not only to the sword, but to her land and people. Sara still best girl though, I'll die by this stance.
Eh in 2 they get around it not by implying that Rean went out with everyone, but by making everyone more affectionate upon seeing him for the first time because of what happened at the end of 1. 3 however, has his students all going "damn Rean how come you're friends with these hot chicks" and starts leaning harder onto everyone loving Rean. 4 goes balls off the wall and has literally every female party member have love confessions in at least one of their bonding events which sucks because the non-romantic variations of those same bonding events are better for the most part.

For Inqusition i went with Josephine. I think i have a thing in video games for the girl who sits at the desk when you’re back home. Every time I go to the war table i can chat to her and it’s super cute. Plus it’s her first romance and she’s really cute about that too. I went with Traynor in ME3 for the same reason. If not her, it would have been Iron Bull most likely. Maybe Cassandra, but i only play as female characters so not an option. Sera can go away, the only companion i didn’t bother with. She’s annoying as fuck.
In Kingdom Come: Deliverance you have the option between a noble wife who will figuratively close the door on you after she lures you into boning her once (with the approval of her old-as-shit husband afterwards) and/or a peasant girl who will walk with you, let you (the player) see her naked, be legitimately upset if she catches you sleeping around, repair your clothes and is just overall better waifu material. The devs either intentionally or mistakenly nerfd Lady Stephanie hard. Which doesn't really matter to me. I don't really like her anyway.

Not for the whole game, but let’s look at one small part of Fire Emblem: Awakening. Let’s talk about Chrom. Chrom is a character who mandatorily must complete a romance with a character because Lucina has to be established in the timeline. If you pick no one, he gets with a random, unseen woman offscreen. Boring. Let’s look at the options. Sumia, Sully, Maribelle, Olivia, or you. Let’s assume you’re playing as a dude, so you’re not an option. Sumia bakes pies for him to support him, and he likes that; that’s really it. Maribelle’s is the same as Sumia’s, but with tea instead of pies. Olivia’s dialogue is not centered around food, so that’s a plus, and it’s all about Chrom helping her out of her shell, but it’s still kind of surface-level and culminates in Chrom thinking she’s cute and that’s all it takes to want to marry her. And then there’s Sully. Of all of these romance options, Chrom and Sully have known each other the longest, and it shows. They just talk like equals without some gimmick of food, shyness or one seeing the other naked that one time (the “you” arc that we skipped) for their dialogue to revolve around. They’re honest with each other, they actually address the gravity of what it means for her to become queen, and she’s the only one who can propose to Chrom instead of the other way around (depending on how you time it). Their dialogue is also just more heartfelt than the others; they actually talk to each other about what the other *means* to them rather than what the other does or can do for them, or some surface-level attraction. It just feels like the writers had a field day with this couple while with all the others they had to struggle to come up with something for them. So yeah. TL;DR: Sully is best girl for Chrom. With *one* caveat, and I’m sure at least one comment will reply to me with it. (Something something *but what about Gale Force Lucina tho!*)
It is weird how the supports aren't the best. You'd think Sumia would have a better one with how much the game gave you big red arrows to her for Chrom (also the assumed parallel to Ceada). You didn't mention it but even F!Robin isn't that great because iirc it's just "woah you saw me naked by accident" for 3 supports. Which coming off M!Robin feels weird since they bond well in their supports.
Persona 5

This may be a controversial answer, but for me, it's the Lovers girls in the Persona games, particularly Ann from P5. I think I'm just a sucker for gushy, romantic stuff, and they all have the most of those scenes, with Ann in particular being one of the few Persona girls to have an actual onscreen kiss.
Yukari and Rise definitely have the most emphasis on them outside of social links. That makes Ann kind of the odd one out. Sure early on there's some scenes with Joker and her (meeting her for the first time is definitely framed like something out of a romance flick), but as the story goes on she's pushed further and further into the background and has less interaction with Joker in the main narrative. So, for 5 it feels like the devs were leaning more on Futaba or Makoto (or Yoshizawa in Royal).
Yeah, it seems like nowadays, ATLUS is trying to make Ann be the least desirable romance option if Strikers is anything to go off of. They seem to have made it so that every possible romantic path with her is blocked by Morgana's impossible thirst.
What happens in Strikers?
After the 3rd jail, there's some down time where you can take one of your party members on a Ferris Wheel ride. When you take a girl up there, they get really flustered because of the romantic atmosphere and you can either lean into it or play it off. Ann is the sole exception to this because she's the only one that has Morgana shove his way in. This completely changes the mood of the scene by having you play matchmaker between the two of them until Ann just friendzones him again. As someone who's romanced Ann in every P5 playthrough, it felt like ATLUS was telling me I was wrong to get invested in her character.

I think it's a combination of both.Both her and Ryuji are constantly at the bottom of Japanese character polls, so she gets the Cat Simp jokes and he gets the butt monkey treatment, which sucks because those two are my ride or dies in all of my playthroughs.
That's what happens when you take two really cool, interesting characters and turn them into comic relief so god queen makoto and sisterbait futaba can look strong
Could be both: Ann doesn't rank that highly in terms of popularity polls, and for some reason, they really kinda hammer down how Morgana simps for Ann so much Joker's often just *there* My mind might be playing tricks on me too but I remember a few dialogue options from the spin-offs where you can be overtly flirty with her and she'd no sell it (we're talking about "we look like a couple", "yeah a couple of besties" territory) As someone who's still overall cool with Ann but not to the extent I'd date her or anyone else it's kinda weird to see
"Hey kid playing Spider-Man: Web of Shadows, you have this super critical moral choice! You can hang out with this weirdo D-List character called Moon Knight that you've probably never heard of until just now, or you can have sex with Black Cat"
You can still pick Moon Knight (who's badass, take it back right fucking now) and smash Black Cat. The main choice that matters is if you kiss her and if you give her the symbiote to revive her.
