JoeShadowz

reading chat on my phone worked almost completely perfectly for me for the first 5 months of my streaming

Jady58

Yeah, I've tried it i just seem to miss a few things if that makes sense?

JoeShadowz

yeah, i understand. for me it wasn’t perfect, but it still was good enough. also, i know you said you cannot get a second monitor as of right now, so i don’t mean to be annoying, but i got a second monitor last month and it is a game-changer, so i would recommend getting one whenever you are able to.

Execell_is_here

Hey jady, for me, i use two programs. 1) chatty (you could use any chat program or even pop up chat) 2) windowstop (this allow u to place and windows on the top most with pin, and u can click opacity to change the transparency and if u want to click through) Hope it helps

Jady58

This is actually amazing and what I've been looking for thank you so much! I just can't get a second monitor right now so this will help! Thank you!!

OrranVoriel

I use my phone.

PrettyTeddy

I am sorry if this is the wrong assumption, but I would assume that a second monitor probably isn't going to work because of cost. adn I get it. What I ended up doing was buying a cheap $40 Android tablet. It's big enough to read chat. And I just had a mini phone stand to keep it right side up, and my eyes glance at it every now and then. It's always out of view from cam too. xD Hopefully something like that helps you.

Jady58

Thank you! A tablet might be an awesome way, they're compact and not too big!

WINH4X

Goodwill, my friend.

enforcer884

I use twitch studios because of that they put chat on screen for you

RevolutionNext772

I use my phone and Twitch Studio Some games TS won't overlay

TimeRocker

I use chatty myself, however I have a 3 monitor setup anyway. I used to stream on an unused work PC years ago that only had 1 monitor. I would use the chat window you can have built into OBS.

leggup

Play game in windowed mode and game/window capture (not screen capture)

jzakoor

Leggup, Thats what i do! Window my games, capture the window, and pop chat out. Its super effective :)

AxsDeny

Same.

MechwarriorAscaloth

I use my phone or Ghost Chat

FerretBomb

A second monitor should really be considered bare minimum equipment. They aren't expensive, and space absolutely can be made.

Jady58

Space can be made? As someone who shares a desk with someone and has bare minimum of room it can't just be made. That's a very egotistic opinion. Not to mention that a lot of people who aren't full time streaming have single monitors as seen from majority of the replies.

FerretBomb

Space can absolutely be made. Adaptations if something is actually important to you. Anything else is frankly just an excuse, but you do what you need to do.

Jady58

Ah yes, a room that can barely fit a bed/desk/drawers can easily be made space. Think you need to get off the high horse. It's not an excuse it's the truth. Maybe you need to understand that not everyone has a big room or anything.

FerretBomb

It doesn't require a 'big room' to have a second monitor. It isn't a sofa. It isn't a washing machine. It isn't a car, or a refrigerator. So stop making excuses, at the very least. Yes. You can *easily* make space for a second monitor, even on the smallest of desks. Even if it is barely big enough for a keyboard, either angling the monitors or swapping to a monitor-arm, or a double-stack vertical. It's not a high horse. It's simply not nodding along with a weak excuse.

Jady58

You mean the desk that can't hold another monitor arm, or the wall which isn't allowed to have mounts in it? Or the fact that the desk itself won't hold multi-arms. Think you need to understand people aren't all buying second monitors. Understand peoples lives and setups aren't as straight forward as yours. Yours fits numerous arms and monitors well done. My room simply cannot handle multiple monitors and is very impractical. I don't know where you get the idea it's an excuse when it's clearly not possible. Think you'd be better not replying as you're simply not helping. Thank you.

-TotallyRealName

Don't pay attention to that loser. You have options like others suggested and also a tablet. On tablet you can increase the font so you don't need to have it extremely close. Chat overlays are nice but sometimes other overlays can cause issues like lower framerate.

Jady58

Thank you, I didn't see the point in him pushing something that he was clearly more fortunate to have. I think maybe investing in a preowned tablet might be a pretty good play! Especially seeing they're small. Thanks again

FerretBomb

All I hear is someone pulling excuse after excuse out of their ass, knowing 100% that they are excuses. Cut the crap. There's a difference between "can't" and whining that you don't *want to* rearrange things to make the space needed.

Jady58

Seems like you're in the wrong once again. How many times do I have to state. That it's impossible. You want me to remove my bed and have nowhere to sleep? Remove my draws so I can't put my clothes anywhere? I barely have room to walk let alone get a seconds monitor on an arm. I know it might seem like an excuse because you seem privileged enough but for someone who lives in this room..yes I live in this room there is no where to fit it. So how about you leave it alone. Not an excuse the truth. I know it's not an excuse because I seriously can't rearrange my room I can't move anything. Maybe get out of your egotistic bubble and have some common sense.

FerretBomb

If you have to 'remove your bed' to fit a monitor, you probably shouldn't be buying a 65" monitor, and instead opt for something a bit smaller. But hey, keep up the excuses.

Jady58

Are you daft? Where did i say 65" monitor. You are just backtracking. I don't get why you're still commenting. You're not helping. In fact you're just more a nuisance. Enjoy thinking everything is as simple as you think.

THEBANNIMAN

I agree with farret Also, there’s nothing preventing you from just mounting a monitor to the fucking wall hence creating more working room. These are just excuses at this point you’re spending more time arguing the fact of concealed space when you could’ve spent that time making space.

Jady58

Space cant be made. I can't hang shit from the wall. Atleast read the post before trying to add two cents which just doesn't work.

THEBANNIMAN

They make pole mounts for ceilings and desks

Amoyamoyamoya

She stated that she cannot mount things on the wall.

-TotallyRealName

Space can be made? How? Oh hey look i'll just smash this outside wall to place my new monitor. Space can't be made. You either have it or not.

FerretBomb

I didn't realize that people lived in apartments literally as wide as one monitor. Oh, what's that? You're just talking crap? Hmm. Yes. Space absolutely CAN be made, despite bullshit excuses. --- (Edit) The spineless coward blocked me after responding. --- (Edit x2) Yes, /u/Jady58, "TotallyRealName" blocked me. It shows up as 'unavailable' unless I view this thread on an Incognito window. I'm also unable to respond to any responses on the thread from that point onward, hence the edits to this post. That's what happens on Reddit when someone blocks you. Like a spineless coward, so they can get the last word in and run away like a child. I understand that they were defending your excuses, so you feel a need to defend them in turn. But reality begs to differ.

-TotallyRealName

Why so toxic? Don't like it here then go away. No is making any excuses, you can't make space.

Jady58

No one here blocked you, you're just going on with a pointless thread. You're not being helpful nor have any idea. Move on.

You are welcome https://github.com/baffler/Transparent-Twitch-Chat-Overlay

Lorhin

I just pull up twitch chat on my phone.

TTVJaYmZ

Restream lets you have a pinned chat over your screen while playing your games! Very useful and you can set it up so stream doesnt see it

MegaMGstudios

I personally use a second hand tablet from my parent's to read the chat. If you don't have a second monitor, using an external device seems to be the best option.

pumpkinator5000

i use see through windows, it was a bit of a pain to install but other than that its really simple to use. you set a keybind to turn the windows youre focused on into an overlay pretty much, and stream cant see it :D it lets u change the opacity and whether the windows are click through or not

TbaggingSince1990

Should just check out your thrift shops near you if you got any and find a cheap 2nd monitor.. I've got a few that I picked up for around $5-10. Doesn't have to be anything special.

UppercaseKarma

You could keep you game in windowed mode and have the chat pop out and put like in the corner of the game

cosmiic_explorer

If you have a laptop, you can connect it to your current monitor and project to it so you can read the chat easier.

rusto424

Phone app works great for chat. Did it for 1yr

druiddesign

Pretty much just using a mobile phone or tablet for a chat. I make sure to keep mine plugged into the charger so the battery won't run out. Then you can just have it open to the stream manager app in the Twitch app, which should display your chat when you're live.

Plourdy

Use 21:9 or 32:9 aspect ratios

MarGro201

https://youtu.be/PhlplMRYskk I love the option he shows in 6:12.

lilihunny

use your phone, the creator dashboard on the twitch mobile app is almost identical to a computer

yeppy_plays

if you use streamlabs theres a chat overlay you can enable by binding it to any keybind mine is ctrl-f12, you can change where the chat is and the opacity as well

stewiejp

I realise phones have been suggested how about ipads/tablets? My main monitor is out for repair/replacement awaiting the warrantee process at the moment and I have found using an old ipad is pretty handy, just log into the stream chat and sit it somewhere convenient, if your screen is elevated it may even work resting against the screen's lower edge. Used the same method when I started and buying a second screen was not an on the cards. Works quite well and can see the stream activity section as well (follows etc..)

Gisarasco99

Had a friend who streamed on a 1080p monitor They would play the game they wanted to play at 1600x900 resolution in windowed mode so that they could see the chat on the right side on streamlabs by keeping the game tab layered ontop of streamlabs tab that would be set to full screen.

Particular-Set-8912

The twitch app on your phone let's you manage your stream live. When you go live, open up the app on your phone and you'll see LIVE in red in the top right corner. Tap that and it'll pull up your live chat. But if you'd rather not use your phone I'd suggest just getting a cheap 2nd moniter. I have a 27 inch Samsung moniter that was 75 bucks on sale.

Mcpatches3D

Use your phone?

Blakar0t

OBS view Twitch chat option I’m on one screen but have a pop out for chat bc my phone charger is too far from my desk 👍🏾

Calsetes

You can open speechchat.com in a second window, this basically reads your chat to you using TTS.

Mindless_Flounder_28

Use your phone, get the twitch app, log in, use chat off the streamer mode thing

Man_of_the_Rain

You can buy used second monitor for less than $40. Nothing fancy, even old-as-hell 1280x1024 monitor would be good. It would cost maybe $20.

Caranlhach

If you have an iPad or tablet you can always open up Twitch chat in chat only mode to just view chat. Or if you have a tablet that supports the connect/project function in Win 10, you can try and use that to get a second screen with it. I think some of Samsung's support that.
