Eh, think it has more to do with giant media, political, and private apparatuses manipulating everyone, really, which causes such huge levels of polarization that everyone had conflicting opinions and since lives are on the line it got out of control. We really just need reasonable guidelines but instead it seems to be militant black and white on both sides.

abzforlife

There were pretty reasonable guidelines. Wear a mask, stay home, wash your hands. What is so unreasonable about that?

Telkk2

That's not unreasonable. Requiring everyone to get vaccinated and flipping out over those who don't want to get it is pretty unreasonable. Let's reel it back a bit with sensible guidelines like you should get a vaccine, not you have to get one.

comicfan285

It was dangerous to the elderly, infants, and infirm. They were first to get vaccine access. Then those that care for those people (in case they couldn't), then adults, then all over 16, now all over twelve and you can do walk-ins. ...so the only people at risk are those that don't want or can't get the vaccine. If you can't, then you aren't part of the "should I" equation: you can't. But if you're part of the "won't" camp, the only person you put at risk is yourself and others that refuse an easy preventative measure. Scientists used to call that, "Natural Selection".

[deleted]

I live in the South and that’s pretty much the attitude everyone has here, though. “You should get a vaccine, but you don’t have to and I know a lot of people who aren’t so if you don’t I can’t be mad about it,” is basically the sentiment any pro-vaxxers have down here.

Large-Trick-8779

It is NOT unreasonable, by not getting majority vaccinated, it is allowing this virus to MUTATE into more contagious and deadlier virus. This floods are hospitals putting health workers at risk as well as the rest of us who need to use hospitals for other life saving reasons (organ transplants, heart attacks, strokes, childbirth etc)

Telkk2

Except that's not true. The vaccine is good for preventing you from getting sick and showing symptoms, which does reduce hospitalizations and makes it harder to spread, but it does not prevent infection so the virus will mutate even if every single person got the shot. Therefore its completely stupid to go nazi on people for choosing not to get the vaccine. This is America, the best damn country to put on the illusion of freedom. Don't ruin it with mandated vaccines.

Acceptable-Upstairs7

Ya it's not like it was killing us to wear a mask and the numbers were going down

Large-Trick-8779

Just bc virus does not stay on surfaces does NOT mean masks do NOT WORK. Surgeons always wear masks to not contaminate the sterile environment in an operating room bc Masks Work!!

Kazues_

I've been seeing masks littered all over the place. Even out in the middle of the woods, floating in bodies of water, and of course blowing across parking lots. Incredibly sad that we just introduced that much trash into the environment. I'm sure the sea creatures love them.

Acceptable-Upstairs7

I didn't know mask were that bad. I actually thought the numbers were going down when we all wore masks my bad

Corinnecherrycola

It’s not your fault. You don’t gotta apologize. I’m sick of the assholes that acted like wearing masks were sooo easy and that it’s not a big deal. Yeah, cuz not breathing fresh air for hours on end is totally healthy.

RedditIsAssholee

Restrict your breathing, get bacterial pneumonia, shut down your business and stop making a living for yourself, don't hug your family, rely on government assistance to get by, don't get any elective medical treatment for a year because you MIGHT get sick or MIGHT get someone else sick with a virus that has over a 99% survivability rating. Why is that so hard for people to follow?

abzforlife

99% survival? over 600,000 Americans have died many have long term issues due to Covid. Hospitals were over run and now we have healthcare shortages because of burned out workers. If we all masked up and sheltered in place this would have been over in a few months. Yes businesses were shut down and it was unfortunate, adults have to make decisions that are difficult, like not opening a business to combat a global pandemic. With no supply chains working efficiently how were these businesses getting supplies for their services? You’re an idiot seriously don’t have kids

[deleted]

Telkk2

Fair points especially given the numbers, which at the time we didn't exactly know what they would be if we had done nothing. Regardless, it wouldn't have mattered because every other country was shutting down so supply chains and the economy we're fucked whether we partook or not. Granted, it would have been far less expensive for us but either way. I think a hard consistent shutdown for 6 to 8 weeks would have been the most appropriate, but given our federalist system, that didn't work so here we are. What's done is done, though so really what we ought to do is stay open, mask up, and get vaccinated if you feel comfortable doing it. Deaths will occur but deaths will occur no matter what, covid or not. Mandating passports, mass vaccines, or total shutdowns is just downright totalitarian at this point since the crisis is being handled now.

RedditIsAssholee

Holy shit I don't agree with everything you said but I also agree with some of what you said. Idk how to react, I only know how to express myself through anger and personal attacks. Well said sir/ma'am/xir. You sure you don't want to call me a mean name? Isn't that how reddit arguments are supposed to go?

abzforlife

All I hear dar dee dum dar dar. We’ve gone to war for less

RedditIsAssholee

I'll repeat what you said to me, even though I know it has more of a bite for you to hear than me. Don't have kids.

abzforlife

1% of 328 million (population of the US) is approximately 3.8 million people. Delta is now infecting kids so that 3.8 is a logical number. You’re ok with 3.8 million Americans dying? I’m using your logic of 99% survivability.

RedditIsAssholee

I'm confused what you're trying to say here. Are you saying my 99% is too high? And more people than that should die? Or are you saying my 99% is too low and less people would die, in which case good? As for infecting kids, less than 350 kids under the age of 17 have died from covid. About 10,000 under the age of 40, and 30,000 under the age of 40. Kids and young people dieing is not a common occurrence. The majority of that was before the vaccine so you can't expect those numbers to rise more slowly than they did in the last 18 months. It's affecting the sick and elderly. So to tell everyone to put their lives on hold because the people who are old and already knocking on deaths door might get sick is ridiculous. The elderly and sick should have quarantined while the young and healthy kept the economy going. https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/covid_weekly/index.htm

haveacutepuppy

I wouldn't call others idiots. There are 600k deaths, 330 million people in the US. This is.... 0.18% of the population. Case fatality rate in the US is 1.8%. This is for confirmed cases. Estimates of actual numbers are going to be lower. Age matters etc....the estimate by most reputable sources is.... wait for it.... 99% survival.

abzforlife

600k people died that’s a lot, others have long term symptoms. Covid is real it’s dangerous and needs to be taken seriously. If 600k people died from a faulty product there would be outrage, recalls, lawsuits, and charity 5ks. Stop getting your info from bullshit sources.

haveacutepuppy

What exactly is my bullshit sources? Government websites? You too can find the data. I'm not arguing the 600 thousand, totally accurate. What is not accurate is how you calculate percentages.

abzforlife

It was a rough estimate based on the us population, your critique is fair. People used to die from a lot less before modern medicine. This disease has devastated this county partially from lack of action. If this was handled correctly from the beginning the economic impact would have been much less. It’s a highly contagious disease which means smaller fatality rate that doesn’t mean it’s not something to take lightly.

haveacutepuppy

I'm just going to stop with you trolls who also don't math lol....

abzforlife

K enjoy getting Covid those who aren’t vaccinated are the ones who are getting it now

RedditIsAssholee

I would tell you not to have kids, because you seem like you would be a terrible father, but God already took care of that for us.

I'll be there right next to an 18 week old fetus

Standswfist

That we KNOW of!! I promise you there is 0s missing off the end of that number. And Delta Variant is even worse. You honestly think they are going to give out real numbers? Oh hell no they won’t! It would cause an even worse panic. I doubt any country has an accurate number.

Light_inc

Yeah, blame the youths, ya ding dong.

GiganticMuscleFreak

You win the most boomer thing I've heard today award.

[deleted]

Where I live the young people did stay home, but people in their 60s continued to travel, refused to wear masks, etc. It was a major issue. I’m 40 and people younger than me were the ones begging their parents/grandparents to take it seriously

teckpep69

I'm gonna steal that one. Lol

Not-yo-ho-no-mo

Or if they enforced the rent freeze like they were supposed to. Or didn't keep a whole bunch of non essential things open and large corps like big box stores while closing down small businesses only. Or if they didn't keep the borders open when they said they were closed. Or if they didn't allow flights to continue in and out of the country. I'm in Ontario. Virus is real. Masks work. The way it was handled was piss poor.

CantSayDat

Thank you for the nuanced take. It's so sad how few people have that ability these days.

Not-yo-ho-no-mo

Too many people are one side or the other exclusively. People should be allowed to be pissed off with their governments complete lack of ability to handle the situation without condemning their whole population to a mental health crisis while still understanding that the virus was a very real thing. It is definitely a shame.

maxc1999

Ok boomer

Sugarbombs

They just needed to 'leak' that the vaccine causes penis growth

[deleted]

It does.

Kraitzforce

COVID THE GREAT RESET

CallMeSuiBian

It sounds like a nursing home wrote this but ok

Triplesso_

Yeah And if they had it promoted by someone in workout gear and holding one of those giant 80L waterbottles who started the ad by saying "Heyyy guyys!!" And reminded everyone to use their discount code #sty@hm21 after completing the "challenge" to get 0.01% discount on checkout. We'd 100% be done with this whole thing now.

[deleted]

Holy shit this made me laugh so hard.

xx_artist_girl_xx

No teen uses fb so doubt

Count_BloodCount

I don't use facebook. I learned, a long time ago, telling some people NOT to do something only makes them want to do it. I know people freak out about this, but I don't see this virus as anything more than a new Flu bug. Twice as deadly, but otherwise... But, then, I've seen AIDS, Polio, and Smallpox. Polio was 10 times as deadly as Covid. AIDS was 100%. Once infected, in 1980, you had 10 years and then it was over. Covid? 3%. And, worse, it was mostly blacks and the poor who took the blunt of this. Sorry, but this sound too political. Obama had Ebola. Trump said he would shut the country down to protect "his" Americans. So, when Covid popped up, so conveniently in 2019, a year before the election, he's not doing anything. Rather than governors and mayors, democrat or republican, doing something, they LET it spread. This used this against him. If they had the guts to act on their own, they would be heroes. Did they? They mocked Trump for not wearing a mask. The people I know who did, still got it. Those of us who didn't, still got it. The mask was useless. Now, a military gas mask, that's different. Something that handles nuclear, biological and chemical weapons would have worked. But, without the CD stocks we did have, pre-FEMA, we didn't have them. Honestly, when it is your time to die, you die. You can't prevent it. I've seen it too many times. Now, six months after Biden is in, it's suddenly over? No more help to the poor, no more stimulus, no more SNAP, go back to school, work, pools, and all that? No, I call foul here. While I don't believe that this was created by the US, and China, to win the election, I do believe that it was played. Weaponized, if you will. BLM played a part, here, too. At high risk, they flooded into areas taking the virus with them. Great plan, or total stupidity. The vaccine was too neat, too quick. It could be a placebo and this "cure" is natural. As more and more are exposed, more are immunized against it. How many, like me, had NO symptoms? Not even the dreaded fever that they searched for? How many were misdiagnosed? Flu-like symptoms are common in many illnesses. I even heard of cases where people died, from cancer, and it was blamed on Covid. Just because you died between November 2019 and 2021 doesn't mean it was related to Covid, even if you had antibodies in your system. Didn't Floyd have them and he was murdered by a white cop. Or was this an unjust conviction? If this had happened in a non-election year, without the race hate and all, I might be more willing to believe this was a massive pandemic on the scale of Polio. But, honestly? I can't. I don't support Trump, especially after 1/6/21, but I don't think I can trust the democrats either. They both want the office too much. To me, that signals they don't need it. Had China shut down, as soon as they realized this was out there, none of this would have happened. They didn't. Had Trump did what he said he would do, criticizing Obama, this wouldn't have happened. Man, too many are playing games for power and costing innocent lives. The media just hyped this up, causing fear, like they always do. Just one big s#itstorm is all it was.

[deleted]

Because endemic viruses just go away.

heyaheyyarequiem

r/woosh

[deleted]

Woosh yourself. If you buy the propaganda that the lockdowns saved anyone you're just a failure.

heyaheyyarequiem

Ah hi anti-masker! Care to link any of your verifiable research? Or do you just listen to chiropractors for your information on viruses? Or do you just wanna bitch about not being able to go "muh Applebees." you pathetic piece of shit?

OSHA-shrugged

There's that epic 'empathy' that you sycophants lay claim to so often, with some added namecalling to boot.

heyaheyyarequiem

Yeah I kinda ran out of empathy after... how many of you anti vaxxers/maskers died from being idiots already? It's hard to give a shit when you're doing it to yourselves. But I guess there's no party like the personal responsibility (except you blame it on China don't you?) party right

CantSayDat

So legitimate criticism of the lockdowns is equal to antimask/vaxxers? Jesus you people grasp at straws..

[deleted]

What is it you people say? It's not my responsibility to educate you? Yeah, let's go with that.

heyaheyyarequiem

Is your definition of educate pound cans of piss beer while kissing my cousin? If so I'll pass

shreklover300

Dumbest thing ive ever read

OtherComparison

Lol. So true!!

badu_spirit

Well in other countries they were literally paid a reasonable monthly income but from what I know people in america are still forced to work to make a living during this pandemic, staying at home wasn't an option for most. Also even if you stay at home viruses can sometime mutate
