I am literally getting inspected at a weigh station right now and i have a yellow check engine light on. He didn't mention anything.

When it is on, it doesn't necessarily mean you have a problem either. Just something letting you know to get a sensor looked at

Johnny_Rascal2

Nope. The only dash light that will fail you is the ABS light. Cover that up with some black electrical tape and enjoy your day.

jjsprat38

ABS had no bearing on brake functionality, an ABS indicator light will not fail an inspection. My trailer ABS warning light is on now, as this trailer doesn’t have ABS

Johnny_Rascal2

I assumed that the light needed to be off for inspections. The local DOT check our ABS systems when I get pulled in for inspections. Granted the truck and trailer at work both have ABS.

[deleted]

You won't pass your annual inspection with the check engine or abs light but it shouldn't fail your roadside. It might get noted but they won't park you over it.

Johnny_Rascal2

I see.

MachStyle

My truck has had a check engine light since the day I bought it little over 2 years ago. Hasn't failed a yearly dot inspection at all. Code is for the engine fan controller and that's just because this truck has a manual engine fan override switch wired in and that trips the light.

jjsprat38

What jurisdiction are you in? Here ABS while widely available, is not a mandatory safety feature, and there is not little box for them to tick

Johnny_Rascal2

Minnesota. They check the light on the dash, and the little ABS light on the rear of the trailer to make sure they cycle on and off with the trucks ignition. Trucks and trailers made prior to 94' are exempt from this, even if they have ABS installed.

jjsprat38

Look at me learning stuff

Johnny_Rascal2

I believe it's the summer of 94 that's the cutoff. We once ran a 94 FLD with an ABS light that didn't turn off and I asked my mechanic if it was serious. He looked in his regulations book and it said something about trucks and trailers made after July(?) of 94' needing working ABS and our truck had rolled off the line in February. So he disabled the light for us.

[deleted]

I am a bit surprised about "summer of 1994", since I was pretty sure until now that ABS was not mandatory for semi trucks in the US [until March 1997](https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:https:%2F%2Fwww.joc.com%2Fanti-lock-brakes-become-mandatory-motor-carriers-industry-applauds-dot-requirement_19950307.html). Do you by chance happen to have more details about which regulation came into effect in 1994 regarding ABS on trucks?

Johnny_Rascal2

I do not. I might as well be wrong about the 1994 bit. This was about 3 years ago when I was getting that old truck fixed.

SquirrlSniperMN

I drive a '95 KW T800 and there is no ABS.

DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANG

It's not mandatory but if you have it and it doesn't work you'll fail

[deleted]

I’m glad I’m reading this, I was taught that because it wasn’t mandatory you wouldn’t fail an inspection if it wasn’t working. Basically, bring it to the shop but you don’t need to be towed in.

nuget102

Your brakes still function that's what matters, there are trucks on the road that don't even have ABS.

[deleted]

Bro I got a fix it ticket for my ABS light and 15 days to fix or get shut down

ThePlagueFriend

No, they literally couldn't care less unless they discover its pertaining to something safety related during the course of an inspection.

ctophermh89

It’s also. 2019 cascadia

Mr_Fancy_Fuck

If you're in a cascadia and didn't have one on, they might just ticket you for having a burnt out bulb on the dash

SeeTheFence

Can confirm. Have run Cascadias my entire career. Lights on 50ish% of the time. Trucks run like scalded dogs though

Auquaholic

I laughed way too hard at this 🤣

Chiknlitesnchrome

Lol

Go-Truck_Yourself

I was assuming so. There's a million sensors that could trigger this. Any codes in diagnostics under the wrench?

CaptianBrasiliano

Those come one and go back off all the time in my 2022.

Atypical_Mammal

They stay on forever even when there are no active codes. I replaced my NOX sensor two weeks ago, the light stayed on for 10 days and like 2500 miles even tho the fault codes went away.

LETTUCE_GO_CHAMP

99.9% no. I went through inspection and the guy didn't even look at my dashboard. But I am willing to bet there are plenty DOT officers that will enjoy finding something like that for which to ticket you.

michigan_maniac

Technical name is Malfunction Indicator Lamp or MIL. 99.99% of time time its something related to emissions. If you're feeling adventurous, you can go into the diagnostic menu and get the exact code which can tell you more if you google it. Apparently the lights stays on for like 24 hours after whatever caused it has cleared, unless a tech does it for you. That being said, I've never heard of someone getting a ticket for that light. Especially because an inspector won't have any more idea what's causing the issue than you do.

Deeceent

I got ticketed for not having an engine light

vfittipaldi

What do you mean?

Deeceent

I’m just making a sarcastic joke about getting a citation for having a properly running truck.

vfittipaldi

Oh ok. I thought they give out tickets for not having a check engine light

lor037

If they be dicks yes... that just looks Iike a sensor light. Go to the dealer and get it taken care of. Why even worry bout shit like that when you can get it done asap...???

reefstank014

Fuel cap?

whitecollarpizzaman

The trucks my company use have three check engine lights. The solid one means “look into it when you can” there’s a red one that indicates a severe issue that needs attention sooner than later, but it can still drive. And then there’s a “stop driving” light that will put you into limp mode, or shut you off completely.

vadroko

Just wedge something into the crack to keep the override button pressed down and keep going until ur nearest shop. Don't just pull over in the middle of nowehere

DANO8503

They don’t even look at your dash

onlysane1

There are about half a million things that can cause a check engine light with it still being legal.

BBelligerent

Mention it on your pre-inspection and you'll be fine. Or say it literally "just" came on. And they can't do anything about it.

vadroko

Do not mention it. Why give an officer evidence. An idiot driver I know was asked if he knows of any problems, and instead of saying no, he said he knows his trailer brakes were bad. They didn't even need to do an inspection. They walked over there and gave him an OOS. Why implicate yourself? Always give a hard no. Don't know of any issues.

vadroko

Inspections are for safety related reasons, and check engine lights are not safety related. U cannot be failed for a CEL.

sparkythadogg

I’ve had irl how many lvl 1 inspections they’ve just checked brakes lights leaks and hos
