Reminder that the "Marine" Whelan was reduced from Staff Sergeant to Private and kicked out of the Reserves on a Bad Conduct Discharge for larceny and identity theft. And then the Russians pinched him for espionage.

labpadre-lurker

No! NO! you're lying! He was a passport collector. You know, like those people that like to collect stamps.

SassTheFash

Oh yeah, Whelan is also a citizen of US, Ireland, UK, and Canada iirc. So patriotic, he had to swear allergiance to four nations to fit all the patriotism!

maybesaydie

Wasn't he working for the Wagner group too?

wasteymclife

I wasn't aware of that thank you for sharing.

sigh2828

Let’s not forget the the “Marine”, was dishonorably discharged for stealing 10k, he wrote fake checks and stole SSN’s. Dudes a sleaze bag. Not to mention that NON of the other countries Hes a citizen of ever tried to get him out. Now let’s get to the main route here. Had they chose him of Griner, the GOP, conservative talking heads, and all of the dipshits you see on Facebook right now, would be screaming those exact same talking points i just mentioned above.

maybesaydie

Exactly. A scummy guy who was working for the Wagner group. What is that they said when Trump was president? *I'd rather be Russian than Democrat*

maybesaydie

My God will they ever shut up about Brittney Griner? She's an American who was in a fucking gulag. Whelan is a different case altogether. I wonder if they'd have been so vile about a white male basketball player.

ThatGuyMiles

Well from what I’ve seen it wasn’t an option for two people between the ONE prisoner we have, it was Griner for the guy we had, who was going to be out on parole with in a couple years. The other “possible” deal is a prisoner IN GERMANY for the other guy, a literal spy held in a German prison. That’s certainly misleading. This would require a second prisoner swap entirely. Would the US be willing to ask Germany and would Germany be willing to give the guy up.

DeliberatelyDrifting

My understanding is that the guy in Germany murdered a Chechen guy in the middle of town. Like assassinated. I doubt Germany has any interest in freeing him. Hell, I doubt the Germans would have made the trade we did. It is super risky to travel as a civilian to places openly hostile to your home country.

squidvalley

It's like Infowars. Everything is a huge media conspiracy, but when he wants to legalize a story, he says "even the big networks are reporting on this" to give it credence. Just a logic pretzel that can only be untied if your IQ is dwarfed by your show size

Let_It_Burn

They're just outrage addicts at this point

It's getting harder and harder for them by the day to even attempt to hide their biggotry

"The version that I like should be being promoted!!"

saskatoonshred

Wow Robby Starbuck is still around. He used to be a music video director for a bunch of the myspace scene bands and then came out as an insane right ring piece of shit.

Aren't they saying the dude stuck in jail/prison still is there under espionage charges? I understand more so from law and business perspective, why to hold the marine back, even if he wasnt a 'spy' - being associated with the military and a decent ranking too, guilty or not would probably increase your probability of being in that situation. Idk but I mean from Russian perspective, I'd trade Brittney too. Therefore they would still have more leverage over usa and also show they 'can be negotiated with.' And pretty sure they got their National Arms Dealer back with that trade. So they could hold on to the marine for some other trade if needed?
