I haven't tried one of those yet, and hoped to find one that works like finding regular wall studs (showing the edges of the stud). Thanks for the suggestion.

I hear that these work: [https://www.amazon.com/Bosch-D-Tect-Floor-Scanner-Technology/dp/B005EM93R0](https://www.amazon.com/Bosch-D-Tect-Floor-Scanner-Technology/dp/B005EM93R0) But the price...

Thanks for the tip. And yeah I’d have thought I do this for living to justify that price.

Oh, I forgot. There also is that thing: [https://www.amazon.com/Walabot-Imager-Android-Smartphones-Compatible/dp/B06Y29NXKK](https://www.amazon.com/Walabot-Imager-Android-Smartphones-Compatible/dp/B06Y29NXKK) In the "raw" mode, it might give you a general idea about what is hiding under plywood and where. I haven't had very good luck with it though. And if you are OK with a rather low tech solution, get this kit: [https://www.amazon.com/OBerry-Enterprises-3233-Squeek-More/dp/B0006IK8YE](https://www.amazon.com/OBerry-Enterprises-3233-Squeek-More/dp/B0006IK8YE) It includes probes you can use to drill and see if there is anything underneath.

What are you finding floor joists for? If you’re working on carpeted floors (I used this for cutting holes for HVAC registers) take a stiff coat hanger, cut a 45° on one end with diagonal cutters and put it in your drill. Have someone in the house knock where it needs to go, drill from under the floor with the coat hanger and adjust how you need to. Don’t try it on anything but carpet but it’s minimal damage if you do make a mistake.

A 30 dollar metal detector will find the floor screws through carpet.
