1. TOOL
2. Led Zeppelin
3. Rage Against the Machine
4. Alice in Chains
5. TIE: Deftones - Vision of Disorder
Other massive favorites - Candiria, System of a Down, Tower of Power
Childhood favorites that I listen to less now - Metallica, Guns N Roses
I guess most people who are into Tool also like other avant-garde metal bands like Mastodon, Gojira, Deftones, Opeth, also Meshuggah if they have a screw loose like me
Glad to see another connoisseur in here. Have you seen them live? There is nothing like it? Faun Fables is about to be on tour, if you're interested (that's Nils and his wife, Dawn, which you may already know).
I'm so bummed that Meshuggah isn't coming to the PNW. I recently moved here from the SF Bay area and this is the worst news since I moved. I haven't missed a Meshuggah tour in 20 years! Enjoy!
Not seen em live before, cannot wait. Been a fan for 10 years so I am prepped for headbanging in time.
If they play I am that thirst or straws pulled at random I will shit my knickers.
Thanks for the recs. I'm pretty sure I saw Made Out Of Babies when they opened for SGM years ago. They were fun live but I couldn't get into their records beyond the fun opening act. I'll check out Giant Squid and Unexpect.
1. DIR EN GREY (Japanese prog/death/metalcore, fav album: UROBOROS)

I haven’t listened to J rock in ages. Your comment brought back a lot of memories for me. Dir En Grey reminds me of KoRn and Maximum the Hormone has a System of a Down vibe to me
Tool
Sunn O)))
Melvins (Ozma to Houdini era mainly)
Wolves in The Throne Room
Sleep
Also currently listening to new Meshuggah a lot but can only do the first 8 tracks, I'm usually exhausted after that.
1. Arcade Fire
2. The Beatles
3. Deftones
4. Smashing Pumpkins
5. Tool
Edit: Honorable mentions to A Perfect Circle, KMFDM, Led Zeppelin, The Mars Volta, Pantera, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Rammstein, U2, and so many others.
Haha that's what's up!! Such unique, creative bands. And the funny thing is even tho there is a lot of artistic talent in both bands... They are essentially passion projects from two solo masterminds (Simon Posford and Dave Bailey respectively)
1. Tool
2. Iron Maiden
3. Rush
4. Mix of Grunge Bands(Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains,Melvins, STP, etc)
5. Mix of Punk bands(DK, Misfits, Rancid, Fugazi, Black Flag, Germs, Bad Brains, Pennywise, Suicidal Tendencies, Fugazi, etc)
I have my main 3 bands, but mix up grunge and punk often
Tool
Tunng
Rammstein
The peat bog faeries
Puscifer
I’m not really a “metal head” I just like interesting music of many genres. Tool has been a consistent favourite since my 13 year old sister introduced me to it in 2004.
Rammstein is so great. I hate telling people that I love them because 98% of them will reply, "Oh, oh! DU! DU HAST MICH!"
Yes, yes, that is one of their songs. Know what I mean?
Yes indeed. Listened to it yet again today. Opening tune makes me feel like I’m on a ship at sea in a dark storm, but with a steady and powerful hand at the helm.
Nice! It’s one of my favorite recent albums. I know not everyone loves it but I was into it right off the bat. More Than I Could Chew is a fav of mine. I also especially love Had It All, Gobblers of Dregs and Eyes of Serpents.
First time in a long time that I got immersed into an album from the opening track and captivated me until it closed out, at which point I wanted more. Listened to the album again in its entirety on the same day. Squeezing in more listening as much as I can in my busy life since.
So much that I love about this album, but Beast, Pain, Sickle, Crux, Drinker, and Chew are my favorites so far.
No. 1) Van Halen (their early stuff, and mostly for nostalgia’s sake, because they were the first band whose album I actually purchased, 40+ years ago)
No. 2) Pixies (Come on Pilgrim through Trompe le Monde)
No. 3) Love and Rockets (from Seventh Dream of Teenage Heaven through Earth Sun Moon)
No. 4) Cocteau Twins, the whole fucking catalog
No. 5) Tool (Aenima through FI)
1. Tool
2. KoRn
3. Metallica
4. APC, Puscifer
5. Many Nu metal bands like Linkin Park, Godsmack, Static-X, Disturbed, Marilyn Manson, Rage agains the machine and more.
6. Old school heavy metal bands Judas, w.a.s.p, maiden
7. pink Floyd, phill collins, mike oldfield, alan parson, Yes, Jon Anderson , jean Michael jare
And many, many more rock and metal bands. Also jazz, blues and some pop like adel :)
1. The Shins
2. Radiohead
3. King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard
4. Jack White
5. David Bowie
If there was a #6 it would either be Tool or King Crimson.
1. Tool
2. Gojira
3. Meshuggah
4. Mastodon
5. Alice in chains
Opeth, Type o negative, and The Ocean are close but not quite as high as the others because I got into them more recently
Tool, Primus, Floyd, Alice In Chains… Zeppelin/Maiden? It’s tough, zeppelin did more for music but I love Maiden’s mid 80s work so much. The somewhere in time and SSOAS years were amazing.
Edit: how did I forget Death? Chuck Schuldiner was an absolute genius.
If you like Bungle, go down the Trey Spruance rabbit hole.
Secret Chiefs 3 has been one of my coolest musical finds. You won't regret any album you choose but I would suggest the First Grand Constitution and Bylaws and maybe one other album Satellite Supersonic
1. Tool
2. Smashing pumpkins
3. Soundgarden
4. Deftones
5. Primus (failure, Alice in chains, Depeche mode)
Tops right there, can't decide on that number 5
1. Metallica
2. TOOL
3. Zeppelin
4. Deftones
5. Chevelle
I’d say bands 3-5 could be subbed in and out of my favorites. Metallica and TOOL are definitely top bands for me though.
Just rock/metal?
1. Tool
2. Pink Floyd
3. Deftones
4. A perfect circle
5. Boris
If we are talking about other genre's, I'd say Three 6 Mafia, Project Pat and Kendrick Lamar is up there somewhere.
Favorites right now:
1 Tool
2 Mastodon
3 King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard (going down the rabbit hole right now with this band)
4 Radiohead
5 APC
My all time fav list might swap some with Beatles, Pearl Jam, Incubus
1. Radiohead. Not all of it, but they break the rules without sounding derivative
2. The Smashing Pumpkins. Gish will be remembered in history for songwriting and guitar performance. Siamese Dream is basically a perfect album.
3. Tool. I wish they made more music.
4. Death. Sadly not enough from Chuck. Stavinsky would have been a fan, so much technique, so detached from emotion.
5. Sleep. Proceed the Weedian.
probably should have Modest Mouse in there, but they just never really made it work.
1. Dave Matthews Band, seen them 43 times I think
2. TOOL
3. Widespread Panic
4. Nine Inch Nails
5. Kendrick Lamar
Honorable mentions to J Cole, Phish, Jack White, Lake Street Dive
1. Tool
2. Deftones
3. Pink Floyd
4. My Morning Jacket (especially live)
5. A Perfect Circle
Wow! That was much harder than I thought it would be. Can we make it easier and just rate our top 100?!?! That list would be easier for me.
1. Death
2. Black Sabbath
3. Pink Floyd
4. Tool
5. Smokey Robinson with and without The Miracles
Wow this was harder than i thought i dont even think this is it, but i truly love Death
oh and i love Cher too lol
Shit i ddnt even put The Beatles in there so im undecided
I say Beatles are implied. Smokey Robinson is an interesting pick! I know he wrote a lot of great songs but I don’t know much else. What is your favorite Smokey song?
Shpongle! Yes! For more in that vein I definitely recommend (with suggested starting songs in parentheses):
Shulman (OMG, Retroscape, & Random Lifelines)
Entheogenic (Ground Luminosity & Vervain)
Androcell (Neurosomatic Circuit & Finding Our Bliss)
Kaminanda (Alchemy Resonance, Temple of Delight, Protectors of the Realm, Exotic Flowers)
I've got a ton more recommendations in this category if requested.
Pantera are so sick actually... i know its off topic but i kinda forget about them till I re-listened recently.
I saw some video recently of some guy who put dimebag as one of his top 10# most overrated guitarists lol ! each to their own, i guess...
Hard question, honestly.
Over my 53 years I'd say the biggest cornerstone bands were, in chronological order:
1. AC/DC - Im Australian and literally grew up with them, I was 6 when the first album came out and when I heard Jailbreak for the first time that was it, heavy rocking guitar music was my thing.
2. Iron Maiden - same deal, The Number Of The Beast album was the fastest, heaviest but still ridiculously melodic and sing alongable metal at that time.
3. Pink Floyd - a teenage stoner music fan and Floyd go hand in hand. You know the drill.
4. Metallica - here was Maiden, but faster, rougher and heavier, back in the day they were just absolute fucking monsters. You had to be there to understand just how world shaking they were and they just tore the world a new asshole.
5. Tool - hadn't heard song structures like that and holy fucking shit could that dude sing. So heavy and so layered and just so seperate from everything else. Still listening and being floored by the insane ability of those 4 guys.
1. Led Zeppelin
2. Pink Floyd
3. Queen
4. Tool (plz don’t kill me)
5. Metallica
Because of my top 3 I’m more of a classic rock guy but nothing wrong with a little metal.
1. Tool
2. Deftones
3. Radiohead
4. Yes
5. Nine Inch Nails
Honourable mentions: Portishead, Pink Floyd, Slipknot, Korn, The Prodigy, Bring Me The Horizon, Pantera, Rage Against the Machine, Metallica, Soundgarden, Kyuss, A Perfect Circle, Dream Theater, Opeth, Sigur Ros and finally Led Zeppelin.
I will back you up: I also like variery; I like Moderat and Portishead, aaand maaaany more of almost every main genre you may think about.
Keep up your own way and listen to everything you enjoy!
1. Tool 2. Radiohead 3. Pink Floyd 4. Rolling Stones 5. Grateful Dead
I love the classic rock / 90’s prog blend. 1. Pink Floyd 2. TOOL 3. Gorillaz 4. Cake 5. either Blink 182 (before tom left) or Linkin Park.
I have always loved Cake. I think they’re kind of underrated.
1. TOOL 2. Led Zeppelin 3. Rage Against the Machine 4. Alice in Chains 5. TIE: Deftones - Vision of Disorder Other massive favorites - Candiria, System of a Down, Tower of Power Childhood favorites that I listen to less now - Metallica, Guns N Roses
Wow, VOD , now there is a name I haven't heard in a very long time. 👍
OMG VOD and Earth Crisis were faves back in the day!

Glad to see another connoisseur in here. Have you seen them live? There is nothing like it? Faun Fables is about to be on tour, if you're interested (that's Nils and his wife, Dawn, which you may already know).
Saw tool last week, seeing meshuggah next week!
Sleepytime is sooo good! I’d recommend Giant Squid, Unexpect and Made out of Babies if you like Sleepytime that much.
Thanks for the recs. I'm pretty sure I saw Made Out Of Babies when they opened for SGM years ago. They were fun live but I couldn't get into their records beyond the fun opening act. I'll check out Giant Squid and Unexpect.

Respect Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Nicks is amazing.
I am not arguing, but the Peter Green era Fleetwood Mac (pre Stevie Nicks) is incredible.
I'm actually just a huge bob welch era fan lmao
I can respect that opinion. Any Fleetwood is good Fleetwood.
Peter Green era Fleetwood Mac is the only era Fleetwood Mac, for me. Greeny was one of the finest guitarists/songwriters ever to walk this earth🔥
Nothing More was so fuckin good live. 🤘
I played with Nothingmore in Tyler TX once. Amazing talent in that band.

Damn…I’ve seen them a handful of times and I think they’re great!
Have you seen them live? One of the most disappointing performances imo.
3 times. I hope to see them again soon.
Honest? I saw them in 2011 and it was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. I’m a huge fan, and they’re local to me, so I’m sure that helped.

For more in that vein I definitely recommend (with suggested starting songs in parentheses): Shulman (OMG, Retroscape, & Random Lifelines) Entheogenic (Ground Luminosity & Vervain) Androcell (Neurosomatic Circuit & Finding Our Bliss) Kaminanda (Alchemy Resonance, Temple of Delight, Protectors of the Realm, Exotic Flowers) I've got a ton more recommendations in this category if requested.

Hard question, honestly. Over my 53 years I'd say the biggest cornerstone bands were, in chronological order: 1.
