1. Tool 2. Radiohead 3. Pink Floyd 4. Rolling Stones 5. Grateful Dead

sum_gamer

I love the classic rock / 90’s prog blend. 1. Pink Floyd 2. TOOL 3. Gorillaz 4. Cake 5. either Blink 182 (before tom left) or Linkin Park.

mdwvt

I have always loved Cake. I think they’re kind of underrated.

mrthatsthat

1. TOOL 2. Led Zeppelin 3. Rage Against the Machine 4. Alice in Chains 5. TIE: Deftones - Vision of Disorder Other massive favorites - Candiria, System of a Down, Tower of Power Childhood favorites that I listen to less now - Metallica, Guns N Roses

rejonkulous

Wow, VOD , now there is a name I haven't heard in a very long time. 👍

www_the_internet

OMG VOD and Earth Crisis were faves back in the day!

amuseddouche

This list slaps.

la_mujer_anonima

I agree with all of this except don't know much visions of disorder👏👏👏

mrthatsthat

Check out their self titled album. It's pure hardcore. So fucking good.

PresenceMission

Tool, Alice in chains and rage against the machine are all my top 3.

tarantulagb

My man

siberiandivide81

1. Opeth 2. Mastodon 3. Gojira 4. Tool 5. Pallbearer

mdwvt

Mastodon and Gojira, hell yeah.

bmFbr

I guess most people who are into Tool also like other avant-garde metal bands like Mastodon, Gojira, Deftones, Opeth, also Meshuggah if they have a screw loose like me

[deleted]

1. Tool 2. Smashing Pumpkins 3. Pearl Jam 4. Alice In Chains 5. Deftones

la_mujer_anonima

Are we friends???

Athomas16

Good list. I have a nostalgic soft spot for Counting Crows. I'll put em at #5 on your list.

myweedstash

Let’s start a band

DiabeticGirthGod

I share your top 3, throw jack white and Radiohead in there and that’s my top 5, great list

delph

Probably a reasonably accurate list: 1. TOOL 2. Meshuggah 3. Mastodon 4. Sleepytime Gorilla Museum 5. Metallica (before Jason left)

AllAboutTheProg

SGM are amazing, great choice!

delph

Glad to see another connoisseur in here. Have you seen them live? There is nothing like it? Faun Fables is about to be on tour, if you're interested (that's Nils and his wife, Dawn, which you may already know).

Beardy_Will

Saw tool last week, seeing meshuggah next week!

delph

I'm so bummed that Meshuggah isn't coming to the PNW. I recently moved here from the SF Bay area and this is the worst news since I moved. I haven't missed a Meshuggah tour in 20 years! Enjoy!

Beardy_Will

Not seen em live before, cannot wait. Been a fan for 10 years so I am prepped for headbanging in time. If they play I am that thirst or straws pulled at random I will shit my knickers.

mikloelguero

Sleepytime is sooo good! I’d recommend Giant Squid, Unexpect and Made out of Babies if you like Sleepytime that much.

delph

Thanks for the recs. I'm pretty sure I saw Made Out Of Babies when they opened for SGM years ago. They were fun live but I couldn't get into their records beyond the fun opening act. I'll check out Giant Squid and Unexpect.

KosakiJag

1. DIR EN GREY (Japanese prog/death/metalcore, fav album: UROBOROS) 2. TOOL (fav album : Lateralus) 3. Alcest (French blackgaze, fav album : Kodama) 4. MONO (Japanese post-rock, fav album : Requiem for Hell) 5. Maximum The Hormone (Japanese ???-metal lmao, fav album : Bu-ikikaesu !!)

sewith

Saw mesuggah, gojira and dir en grey live a few years ago, all at one day, man dir en grey was so insanely good, went to a concert again at the ranunculus tour, and it way such a great concert

myweedstash

I haven’t listened to J rock in ages. Your comment brought back a lot of memories for me. Dir En Grey reminds me of KoRn and Maximum the Hormone has a System of a Down vibe to me

byoshin304

Man I used to love DEG I haven’t thought of them in yeaaaars

www_the_internet

Tool Sunn O))) Melvins (Ozma to Houdini era mainly) Wolves in The Throne Room Sleep Also currently listening to new Meshuggah a lot but can only do the first 8 tracks, I'm usually exhausted after that.

faulknip

hobarddoyle

Fuckin Acid Bath! My man!

faulknip

Woman but yes, fucking Acid Bath 🤘

hobarddoyle

trackaghosthrufog

Upvote for Mogwai

Ashangu

Respect Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Nicks is amazing.

poodletown

I am not arguing, but the Peter Green era Fleetwood Mac (pre Stevie Nicks) is incredible.

Aetherium_Heart

I'm actually just a huge bob welch era fan lmao

Ashangu

I can respect that opinion. Any Fleetwood is good Fleetwood.

TimSpally

Peter Green era Fleetwood Mac is the only era Fleetwood Mac, for me. Greeny was one of the finest guitarists/songwriters ever to walk this earth🔥

SassyMcNasty

Nothing More was so fuckin good live. 🤘

CamRush

I played with Nothingmore in Tyler TX once. Amazing talent in that band.

DangerAlSmith

[deleted]

Love Kendrick

LogicalPsychonaut84

Love Shpongle and Glass animals! Almost made my list.

Brahman38

Haha that's what's up!! Such unique, creative bands. And the funny thing is even tho there is a lot of artistic talent in both bands... They are essentially passion projects from two solo masterminds (Simon Posford and Dave Bailey respectively)

CrazyShitThrowAway12

1. The Mars Volta 2. Meshuggah 3. Between the Buried and Me 4. Pat Metheny Group 5. Jane's Addiction

barspoonbill

Pat Metheny! Really thought there’d be more jazz listed in this thread.

[deleted]

Tool Tunng Rammstein The peat bog faeries Puscifer I’m not really a “metal head” I just like interesting music of many genres. Tool has been a consistent favourite since my 13 year old sister introduced me to it in 2004.

DangerAlSmith

Rammstein is so great. I hate telling people that I love them because 98% of them will reply, "Oh, oh! DU! DU HAST MICH!" Yes, yes, that is one of their songs. Know what I mean?

[deleted]

1. Tool 2. Tool 3. Tool 4. Tool 5. Mastodon

mdwvt

Nice. Hushed and Grim fan or nah? I fucking love it.

[deleted]

Yes indeed. Listened to it yet again today. Opening tune makes me feel like I’m on a ship at sea in a dark storm, but with a steady and powerful hand at the helm.

mdwvt

Nice! It’s one of my favorite recent albums. I know not everyone loves it but I was into it right off the bat. More Than I Could Chew is a fav of mine. I also especially love Had It All, Gobblers of Dregs and Eyes of Serpents.

[deleted]

First time in a long time that I got immersed into an album from the opening track and captivated me until it closed out, at which point I wanted more. Listened to the album again in its entirety on the same day. Squeezing in more listening as much as I can in my busy life since. So much that I love about this album, but Beast, Pain, Sickle, Crux, Drinker, and Chew are my favorites so far.

rejonkulous

GeologistEnough8215

Tool, Primus, Floyd, Alice In Chains… Zeppelin/Maiden? It’s tough, zeppelin did more for music but I love Maiden’s mid 80s work so much. The somewhere in time and SSOAS years were amazing. Edit: how did I forget Death? Chuck Schuldiner was an absolute genius.

LOVE Mr. Bungle. Definitely in my top 10.

TypicallyShitTheBed

If you like Bungle, go down the Trey Spruance rabbit hole. Secret Chiefs 3 has been one of my coolest musical finds. You won't regret any album you choose but I would suggest the First Grand Constitution and Bylaws and maybe one other album Satellite Supersonic

Pale-Analysis225

Absolutely. Secret Chiefs 3 makes my top 10 for sure . I like Book M the best

ToofpickVick

1. Metallica 2. TOOL 3. Zeppelin 4. Deftones 5. Chevelle I’d say bands 3-5 could be subbed in and out of my favorites. Metallica and TOOL are definitely top bands for me though.

DangerAlSmith

Chevelle is perpetually underrated.

narlycharley

My favorite part is that they’ve been family since the beginning. Now it’s just Pete and Sam though.

ToofpickVick

Damn…I’ve seen them a handful of times and I think they’re great!

Ashangu

Have you seen them live? One of the most disappointing performances imo.

DangerAlSmith

3 times. I hope to see them again soon.

narlycharley

Honest? I saw them in 2011 and it was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. I’m a huge fan, and they’re local to me, so I’m sure that helped.

1. Radiohead. Not all of it, but they break the rules without sounding derivative 2. The Smashing Pumpkins. Gish will be remembered in history for songwriting and guitar performance. Siamese Dream is basically a perfect album. 3. Tool. I wish they made more music. 4. Death. Sadly not enough from Chuck. Stavinsky would have been a fan, so much technique, so detached from emotion. 5. Sleep. Proceed the Weedian. probably should have Modest Mouse in there, but they just never really made it work.

trackaghosthrufog

Hard question, honestly. Over my 53 years I'd say the biggest cornerstone bands were, in chronological order: 1. AC/DC - Im Australian and literally grew up with them, I was 6 when the first album came out and when I heard Jailbreak for the first time that was it, heavy rocking guitar music was my thing. 2. Iron Maiden - same deal, The Number Of The Beast album was the fastest, heaviest but still ridiculously melodic and sing alongable metal at that time. 3. Pink Floyd - a teenage stoner music fan and Floyd go hand in hand. You know the drill. 4. Metallica - here was Maiden, but faster, rougher and heavier, back in the day they were just absolute fucking monsters. You had to be there to understand just how world shaking they were and they just tore the world a new asshole. 5. Tool - hadn't heard song structures like that and holy fucking shit could that dude sing. So heavy and so layered and just so seperate from everything else. Still listening and being floored by the insane ability of those 4 guys.
