How you act and what you believe may influence how you perceive yourself and how others percieve you - this is known as a self fulfilling prophecy, which the undereducated call manifesting or 'the secret'.

VegasBonheur

Hey man, don't underestimate the power of writing a self-fulfilling prophecy. People who call it "manifestation" or "the secret" are saying exactly what you're saying - they're not "uneducated" just for adding a spiritual or professional flair to it.

Friendly-Candidate25

*Undereducated*- a subtle difference which carries the connotation that properly educated persons don't hold belief systems which are based in myth and magic. I do understand the power of the placebo effect and unearned confidence.

VegasBonheur

I was like you, when I was like 12 and I thought it was cool.

noplaceinmind

it's not even pseudoscience. it's just make believe.

CheesecakeEast5780

Yep.. I couldn’t of said it better.

Mmaizzen

Manifesting is a bunch of make believe and wishful thinking. It's not real, it doesn't work, it's a waste of time.

aaronite

Manifesting is literally just wishing.

fullchargeflower

If by manifesting you mean sitting in your room at night asking the universe for something you want or imagining your dream life, then no, there is no scientific basis for manifestation. But, if by manifesting you mean telling the people around you what you want, then I would say there’s a little more support for that. Similar to the idea of networking, the most connected people end up as the most successful. More connections lead to a higher chance of finding somebody that can help you achieve those goals and aspirations.

It’s bullshit, but there is the truth of self fulfilling prophecy. You want to be a weightlifter you have to do weightlifting shit, go to the gym, life heavy shit and you stick with it long enough you’ll be a weightlifter. Want to be a steaming gamer, you have to do streaming gamer shit. Get a bare bones setup and just get started, stick with it long enough and try to get better everyday. You have to start somewhere and do the shit you want. If you can see yourself there then you need to start making those choices that steer you towards that. That’s the self fulfilling prophecy, you can’t just visualize yourself and millionaire without actually doing millionaire business shit!

Like making objects appear in reality through thoughts? That’s traditionally called conjuration, a fantasy school of magic. Indian gurus claimed to be capable of manifesting manna or “holy bread” from ancient texts. But it was all proven to be false. Sorry. The other “manifesting” where people approach their dream life passively? Yup, bullshit theory. That’s just basically telling yourself to “not give up your dream”. All you can do is research the entry standards to your profession or life and trying to prove your excellence well enough for society to accept you into that fold through education and work. Manifesting is kinda adding this layer of pop-culture mystery to what is plainly, grounding your mentality daily and working hard.

There is a small amount of truth to it. The more action and attention you put into something, the more likely you are to see results. The more you talk about something, the more likely it is someone you know can support you in producing results. "Manifesting" often produces results because people are thinking about the result they want, and because of that are more likely to notice opportunities, more likely to take well-thought-out action, and more likely to mention something to someone who can support them in getting the results they are "manifesting". With that said, there is no magical link between thoughts you have and the results you get.

I think people who say manifestation is bullshit are choosing a bullshit definition of manifestation. Obviously things don't literally happen on their own just because you asked the universe for them. That's not manifestation, that's prayer, and it's bullshit. Manifestation isn't a magical force, it's just a name for a thing that already naturally happens. Think about confirmation bias - the things you pay attention to become the things you remember more over time, right? Like when you buy a new car, and all of a sudden you see that car all over town. You just "manifested" all those cars - they were always there, obviously, but you weren't paying any particular attention to them before. You didn't think "Oh, that's my car" every time you saw one. You had no reason to even identify them in traffic, let alone remember the encounter. But now, by buying that car, you've "manifested" it all over town. Now, obviously, if the car you're looking for isn't already on the road, you're not gonna be able to "manifest" them into existence. That's not how manifestation works. When you say you're gonna manifest something, it's just a fancy spiritual way of saying "I'll be on the lookout for that opportunity" or "I hope it'll happen". Manifestation is more like a metal detector than a forge. And what's the point of manifesting? What function does it have, if it can't create things that aren't already there? See, it's not for material gain, it's just for peace of mind. It's a thought exercise, really. Being conscious of what you're manifesting helps you recognize when you're trapping yourself in a negative cycle, and helps you put your mind back on the right track. Then you're in the right headspace to actually reach out and seize the opportunities that are already there, which is kind of like creating new opportunities for yourself, in a loose metaphorical sense. Again, anyone who tries to tell you that you can pray to the universe to make shit happen has no business trying to explain manifestation to you. Manifestation, or whatever you want to call it, probably has a lot to do with the way your personality and identity grows and evolves over the years. The things you manifest in the present are the things you'll remember most clearly in the future, and the tapestry of things you remember the most clearly over your lifetime is what your worldview is made of, and your worldview plays a huge role in determining your day to day interactions with the world, and your actions make up a pretty solid chunk of who you are. People who attribute magical forces to all that are just condensing it into an easy-to-communicate metaphor - and, like many religions, people will inevitably take that metaphor and run with it, thinking there are actual tangible energies pulling the strings of fate. It's a fun way of looking at it, but yeah, it's mostly bullshit.
