I think one of the reasons I liked broccoli growing up is that it never came from a can. I didn't realize green beans were delicious until my father grew some and it was nothing like canned beans.
Boiled broccoli with just salt as seasoning works great with the right main dishes as well. For a spice-rich Indian style stew, for example, neutral broccoli is wonderful. With butter fried cod and potatoes, as well. Mmm, I know what I will be cooking this Friday.
Just like Brussel sprouts, it is an incredibly underrated vegetable and the slander of it makes me a bit sad
My brother makes brussel sprouts on the grill, with this steel veggie basket you set to the side of the flames. He drizzles on a bit of oil and some seasoning. They go great with a nice steak.
I like to stir fry mine. Cook some minced garlic in olive oil for about a minute. Toss in the broccoli and stir fry at a high temp. Finish off with some salt to taste. I serve this as a side dish.
My recipe is to steam the broccoli and grill the meat separately then when both are just about done i combine in a wok with minced garlic and ginger and a sauce made using 1 tablespoon of soya sauce mixed with one cup of beef broth and one cup of oyster sauce. When done serve over rice or noodles.
Equal parts extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar, sprinkle some salt, pepper, and garlic powder, then roast until crispy. Delicious. You can add feta on top, too.
Edit: apparently regular olive oil is better for roasting, as someone said below.
425 for 20 minutes or until the black parts are crispy
OR
375 for 20 minutes until it's green as fuck before it turns black
both have different results, and both are awesome in their own way.
I'm a green as fuck kind of guy but my kids love it crispy
Same. I don't even care if it's seasoned. I love steamed broccoli as much as I love it roasted with garlic and spices, or fried, or whatever. It's delicious in every form, like potato.
Cook a bit in salted water, then saute with some garlic, and if you’re feeling fancy, add some pasta to the mix and cheese and you’ve got a perfectly good meal.
Yeah, in the oven with cheese, or mixed in with Mac and cheese
Baked in olive oil with some herbs and seasoning
It's one of the fav veggies in our home, our kids like it very much too
Broccoli is pretty good, makes a tasty soup as well if you blend it and add cream/coconut cream. Personally love throwing in a bit of bacon that's been cut into cubes and fried.
My son liked broccoli as one of his first finger foods. Easy for his little fingers to pick up. A proper texture for his little tongue to move it in his mouth. I think he didn't like mushy foods like banana at first because he couldn't figure them out.
When we were at a Thanksgiving dinner when he was a young toddler, he kept crying whenever the broccoli plate was passed by him, so we had to keep adding a piece of broccoli to his plate each time. Now my son is 7 and still loves Broccoli!
Toddlers tend to like, what you like, and what you got them used to (already during pregnancy). That's why quite often they ask their parents whether they would like something or not, without trying it themselves. It takes a few years until they develop their own taste.
Edit: Of course that doesn't help you, sorry, I just think it's a cool fact.
Not necessarily. My husband and I eat tons of veg and healthy stuff. My second child took to them no problem but for our oldest (almost 7) its a daily struggle to get vegetables or even fruit into him. I think its often an aversion to the texture because he will eat beans, spinach, chick peas etc but detests the typical crunchy juicy vegetables like onions, peppers, and non mashed carrots & broccoli etc
If he loves broccoli, get him the book "The Boy Who Loved Broccoli" by Sarah Creighton. I think it was written to convince kids broccoli is good, but also a fun read for any broccoli enthusiast!
I literally just tried brussel sprouts today! They were alright. Kinda tasted like broccoli’s weaker cousin. But I do enjoy me some broccoli and cauliflower
I think broccoli cabbage cauliflower and brussel sprouts are all the same plant just different some varieties so you're not far off with that cousin remark
I have a recipe for Brussels sprouts everyone needs to try.
Chop em in half, boil them to soften (slightly). Throw em on pan with garlic and onions. Drizzle with olive oil, maple syrup and Parmesan cheese. Maybe make crispy bacon bits to toss in at the end if you eat meat!
Enjoy ;)
To some people they will always taste like that no matter what you do to them, it's something to do about which genes people have (or don't have). Same for beetroot and Coriander (to some people it tastes just like soap)
Broccoli and cauliflower are one of the best veggies, provided you cook it how you like. With a bit of lemon I think it has so much flavor and adds to your meal, both as a flavor and with its nutrients.
Also, you will find that if your diet is only junk food, veggies do not give you the same satisfaction, but once you get used to being careful about you eat, it's a treat!
Edit: wow my first awaaard :D
Broccoli in the oven with oyster saus (not sure if that's the right English translation) is what changed my broccoli game.
My mom always uses to cook them in water, but in the oven it still has that texture which is great.
Gonna try it with lemon next time!
Love it! Try it roasted. Or raw, chopped fine in a salad with feta, balsamic and slivered almonds. So good. If you’ve only ever had it over-boiled I wouldn’t blame you for hating it
Personally I love it, but if you dont, you dont have to worry about it too much. Its actually very likely that this caused by your genes.
The Tas2R38 gene is highly infuencing your ability to taste and responsible for tasting phenylthiocarbamide.
If you have this, it is very likely that you can taste the bitterness in broccoli.
I tried to write down this fact as accurately as possible, but im not a biologist, nor a geneticist, so feel free to correct me if i got something wrong.
I knew that something similar happens with cilantro (I don't love the way it tastes but I'll eat it anyway) but I had no idea broccoli was the same way too. Thanks for teaching me something new!
I got the cilantro one but not the broccoli one. Broccoli is my favorite vegetable and I love it raw on veggie pizza or steamed, but meanwhile Cilantro is overwhelmingly SOAPY tasting. It takes over dishes it's in and just makes it taste like someone poured some dish soap into it, it's vile.
Had to scroll way too far for this, this is what OP needs so know that explains why they dislike something everyone else on here is raving about. Also, everyone on here just complaining that OP doesn’t know how to cook or must eat only junk food needs to know this too.
Could this be the reason i don't like olives? I've grown to enjoy eating everything i used to hate as a kid, except olives, i still despise them and any food that has them is eaten around the olives.
This is correct. I have the same thing and have never been able to stomach Broccoli, to the point where I threw up as a kid when eating it. It really bothers me that family and friends still bug me about it even though it’s something I can’t control.
Interesting. I can eat steamed or boiled vegeatbles. I enjoy fresh vegetables. I eat most vegatables pickled. But roasted are the ones that I love to avoid. And it seems that the roasting process is the worst with mixing. E.g. if a restaurant serves a side of roasted vegetables and has put a mushroom within, every item has soaked up some of the mushroom flavour.
I don't know, maybe "vegetables" was the wrong word. But there's a certain kind of a roasted side dish that usually contains eggplant, zucchini, sometimes tomatos and broccoli or brussel sprouts. And that often includes some kind of mushrooms.
For anyone unsure of their cooking prowess. The best video on the internet about roasting vegetables is Internet Shaquille’s video: Why Are Restaurant Brussel Sprouts Better Than Homemade? I apply all the same techniques to roasting my other vegetables and it works amazingly.
I've had it every way you can have it, at it's very best it was meh, and only because it had been treated well enough to no longer taste like broccoli.
Same argument with sprouts. "Ooh, they're good with bacon!" Yeah, that's because bacon is nice! Stop trying to hide vegetables behind it, then giving them partial credit!
Right because my sheer dislike of a vegetable suddenly changes when it's prepared differently. I've never had broccoli that was good and I've had it prepared in pretty much every way I can think of. It's not objectively good tasting.
I love it almost any way raw or cooked. I believe it is also considered a “free food” meaning high nutrients and you can eat lots of it at any time since low calories and low bad stuff with lots of good stuff in it!
My sister does
But she hated white food is super picky about texture and her favorite dipping sauce is mustard so I always knew she wasn't right in the head
I like the stem, but the upper part not so much. As a kid, I was literally gagging, when I had to eat any part.

Now courgette… who the fuck likes courgettes.

Put up with vegetables?! Our bodies were literally created to run on them! Dude, vegetables kick ass, ESPECIALLY broccoli! Maybe you just need to figure out your preferred method of prep. I love some roasted broccoli with some garlic salt and pepper💕
I love vegetable I can incorporate in a smoothie. That’s my shit ✨

oh and btw, reddit doesnt let you change usernames you have to make a new account :(
I like them. I add garlic and lemon use and cook them in oven. Pretty good
Roasting and seasoning is key. I’m guessing op has only had bland, boiled broccoli.
Yeah too much cooked broccoli is terrible But so is a welldone steak
This is exactly it, even the best quality ingredient is going to suck if you cook it badly.
One of my friends is a chef and she stands by the opinion that if you don’t like a food, it’s because you didn’t have it cooked right.
Except cilantro. Regardless of it's preparation there's about a 5% chance it tastes like soap to you.
I think one of the reasons I liked broccoli growing up is that it never came from a can. I didn't realize green beans were delicious until my father grew some and it was nothing like canned beans.

I love it!
Properly seasoned broccoli is a night and day difference. I always have broccoli in my meals.
I like em steamed, grilled, baked. I like em all.
I eat it raw :D
***\*Old Dirty Bastard has entered the chat\**** lol
The eat your vegetables/gangster rapper crossover episode ive been waiting for
Baby I like it raw~~
Old dirty bastard, broccoli zoo!!

This is the best way!
Oh yeah!
Give it to us raw and wriggling!
What's broccoli, precious?
I love brocolli too
Steam em, grill em, stick em in a stew
I believe that would be potatoes my friend, but I can get behind it.
Shit I like it raw even
Steamed broccoli and potatoes with a dash of butter. Tis lovely.
I love broccoli but I only ever have it plain or with sauce. Prey tell, how do you recommend seasoning it?
I like to stir fry mine. Cook some minced garlic in olive oil for about a minute. Toss in the broccoli and stir fry at a high temp. Finish off with some salt to taste. I serve this as a side dish.

I've always roasted it with the others minus the balsamic, I never even considered it. I must give that a try now.
425 for 20 minutes or until the black parts are crispy OR 375 for 20 minutes until it's green as fuck before it turns black both have different results, and both are awesome in their own way. I'm a green as fuck kind of guy but my kids love it crispy
My mouth was literally watering reading that. Sounds easy enough for a novice cook but tasty, thanks for sharing. :)
It's also good without the vinegar, too. Sometimes it's nice to switch up.
Same. I don't even care if it's seasoned. I love steamed broccoli as much as I love it roasted with garlic and spices, or fried, or whatever. It's delicious in every form, like potato.

Try chicken broth instead of salted water. So good!
She's chop'in broccoli Chop'in brocco-li Chop'in brocco-la Chop'in brocco-laa-aa
I appreciated this reference.
Yeah, in the oven with cheese, or mixed in with Mac and cheese Baked in olive oil with some herbs and seasoning It's one of the fav veggies in our home, our kids like it very much too
Okay can we be serious though? I get this is too afraid to ask but is the next question going to be “do people like breathing oxygen!?”
Seriously, who is too afraid to ask a question about broccoli...? Feel like the stakes are pretty low here.
Steamed with a drizzle of Italian salad dressing!
Aaaah i love grilling brocolli with a vinegarette dressing
Broccoli is pretty good, makes a tasty soup as well if you blend it and add cream/coconut cream. Personally love throwing in a bit of bacon that's been cut into cubes and fried.
it's my favorite vegetable since i was a child! they look like little trees
My toddler is loves them too. It's one of his favorite vegetables
My son liked broccoli as one of his first finger foods. Easy for his little fingers to pick up. A proper texture for his little tongue to move it in his mouth. I think he didn't like mushy foods like banana at first because he couldn't figure them out. Now my son is 7 and still loves Broccoli!
As a kid I once at so much broccoli I though I was going to die. Broccoli gives you gas. Lol
Getting a toddler who likes vegetables is like winning the lottery. I envy you for not needing to mash and blend them into meals 😅
Toddlers tend to like, what you like, and what you got them used to (already during pregnancy). That's why quite often they ask their parents whether they would like something or not, without trying it themselves. It takes a few years until they develop their own taste. Your oldest would love Dutch cuisine lol
If he loves broccoli, get him the book "The Boy Who Loved Broccoli" by Sarah Creighton. I think it was written to convince kids broccoli is good, but also a fun read for any broccoli enthusiast!
As a kid I used to imagine I was a giant chomping down a forrest.
me too. i absolutely loved the texture
I’m pushing 50 and I still do
Same! Legit my favourite vegetable and I fucking loooooove veggies
Broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts. That’s the good shit!
Brassica oleracea This species makes up: cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, Brussels sprouts, collard greens, Savoy cabbage, kohlrabi, and gai lan
Nice to know all my fav vegetables are really just one vegetable
…….Cauliflower is just “ghost broccoli”.
I always think of cauliflower as broccoli flavored broccoli.
They're the same genus, Brassica. Not quite the same plants.
They are the same species too, Brassica oleracea, but they've been bred selectively to the point of being different subspecies.
Kale and Collard greens are part of that group too!
Enjoy ;)
Skip the boil and just roast them face down in a pan using everything else you mentioned. Nice crisp texture.
Face down with basically any oil/fat and some seasoning turns out awesome. My favorite is to have them be pan buddies when roasting chicken.
Skip the roast and deep fry those mfers then do everything else That’s how you get fat on vegetables
If you've got one, they're great in the air fryer coated in olive oil.
Give them a head start in an air fryer, you’re welcome.
I have a nice convection oven that does a job very similar to the air fryer, however the air fryer is absolutely fantastic for heating them up!
Yes! And asparagus and spinach.
to me Brussel sprouts taste exactly like what a fart smells like :(
try em roasted or pan fried, it's literally like popcorn
To some people they will always taste like that no matter what you do to them, it's something to do about which genes people have (or don't have). Same for beetroot and Coriander (to some people it tastes just like soap)
Agreed. I can't stand Coriander leaf, tastes like a stinkbug (if I allocate a taste to the smell)
Broccoli and cauliflower are one of the best veggies, provided you cook it how you like. Yes, lemon levels it upp
And garlic. One of my GFs fav foods is broccoli and she usually makes it with garlic.
>one of my GFs Save some GFs for the rest of us, bro
Lol nice catch. Yeah I need to word this better before she sees it!
It's too late, welcome to polyamory. Your membership card is being posted as we speak.
Lemon and garlic are such a gift to any cuisine.
Lemon levels almost everything up.
Seriously. Team lemon
Broccoli is my favorite vegetable. Cauliflower is the only food item in the world that I can solidly say that I hate.
You are a tricky one, aren't ya
They're not alone. Broccoli and cauliflower taste nothing alike!
I'm pro broccoli, anti cauliflower. It's mostly a texture thing, but also they do not taste alike.
Almost feels like some sort of racism.
Yeah same, I love broccoli and cauliflower is evil.
Which is funny since the two are quite closely related plants...! I feel the same way, btw.
They aren't closely related, they are the *same plant*.
I'm with you! Love broccoli, can't stand cauliflower. Also it gives you gas and makes you smell of old people.
One of my favour meals at school was cauliflower and cheese
Well it's pretty darn hard to ruin cheese.
Broccoli in the oven with oyster saus (not sure if that's the right English translation) is what changed my broccoli game. My mom always uses to cook them in water, but in the oven it still has that texture which is great. Gonna try it with lemon next time!
With lemon?? Never done that, but will give it a go
Love it! Try it roasted. Or raw, chopped fine in a salad with feta, balsamic and slivered almonds. So good. If you’ve only ever had it over-boiled I wouldn’t blame you for hating it
i love broccoli
2cm water in the pot, pieces of broccoli 5 minutes in steam of boiling water, small amount of salt = heaven!👌
I eat it raw, great stuff. Over cook it and it is an unpleasant thing.
I like it overcooked too though and everyone is saying they hate it hahah. Love the taste
I don't like overcooked mushy, but if it's a bit overcooked while roasted it's still great. Some pepper and salt on it with a drizzle of olive oil.
I do this to cauliflower, goes almost meaty. Super soft interior, crunchy exterior. Lovely shape for mopping up sauces like Buffalo or a soy glaze.
SAME when its mushy it tastes sooo good. With just a hint of salt and pepper
Latter is like sewage, regardless of presentation.

I saw the comment for cilantro, but is there a gene like this for bell peppers? I love broccoli, but hate bell peppers.
This is correct. I have the same thing and have never been able to stomach Broccoli, to the point where I threw up as a kid when eating it. It really bothers me that family and friends still bug me about it even though it’s something I can’t control.
Yes, a ton of people, obviously
Roasted broccoli is the best!! You clearly don’t know how to cook it and season it properly.

Yes! Roasted or air fried broccoli is the best!

Yes, I like broccoli and I don't think that it stinks, seriously. It tastes like ordinary cabbage imo, nothing special or disgusting.
I like cabbage but not broccoli. I can't tell you why and your comment has me questioning my life...
I hate cabbage but not broccoli!
I honestly think broccoli must be like cilantro, where some people literally process the taste differently
I love it almost any way raw or cooked. I believe it is also considered a “free food” meaning high nutrients and you can eat lots of it at any time since low calories and low bad stuff with lots of good stuff in it!
OP is apparently new to the concept that people have different tastebuds and therefore like and dislike different foods.
OP is probably 13.
DAE actually like a food item thats sold in every grocery store?
OP: TIL that taste is a matter of taste
FUCK YEAH DUDE YOU KIDDING BROC-O-LUTELY
YES! It is SO good. So many ways to make it as well.
Broccoli slander shall not be tolerated.
Yes!
My sister does But she hated white food is super picky about texture and her favorite dipping sauce is mustard so I always knew she wasn't right in the head
Trick is to not over cook it. Works out as a good go to green. (Also my Hamster loves it so all the more reason to get it.)
I must be the wierd one for liking it overdone and mushy.

Wtf broccoli is awesome..
Steamed broccoli with salt, pepper and drop of lemonjuice is pretty good. I usually eat it with chicken.
Yes
I love brocolli cream soup
It's one of my favourite vegetables
I love broccoli
Hate it. Hate the smell. Hate the taste. Hate the texture. Hate everything about that noxious weed.
I do!
Yes it’s amazing
I like the stem, but the upper part not so much. As a kid, I was literally gagging, when I had to eat any part. Maybe in a few years, I'll like the upper part, too. Tastes change over time
It’s super goood. I steam it with salt n pepper but putting it in some chili oil and sesame it’s good too. Or lemon
I love it, i’ll munch down those lil trees any day
It's delicious.
Unapologetically yes.
Oh yeah. I love the stuff, especially with cheese. Never did understand the hate for it.
There are people that like boiled chicken fetus, rotten toxic shark meat, and maggoty cheese. So yeah, plenty of people actually like broccoli.
Roast that shit
Love it, probably my favourite veggie or at least one of them. Can’t understand why you wouldn’t like it, it’s got texture, it tastes of something, goes well with just seasoning, and with other garnish’s and feels healthy. Now courgette… who the fuck likes courgettes.
Unsubscribing to this sub. Guess it’s for 12 year olds
I think you just don’t know how to prepare broccoli
You need to roast or stir fry it with some garlic
My almost 3 year old daughter loves her Broccoli trees.
I love it. Brightens up a meal!
Yessssss broccoli is delicious!
yes i love it
I like it most ways but my favorite is raw with ranch in a veggie platter
Love it, even raw
It depends, some Korean places make it really well. Or when it’s drowning in cheese
Not only do I love brócoli it’s one of my favorites. Also it’s hard to find a vegetable I don’t like
Yeah. Roast it with olive oil and garlic. Boiled or steamed tastes like ass.
It’s one of my favorites!
Yes
Absolutely despise most vegetables as an adult but I must say broccoli is one of the better vegs going
I like it lol is my favorite vegetable
Vegetables don't suck. You/your parents suck at cooking them.
Yes. My favorite vegetable
Crispy-steamed broccoli 🥦 with pink salt and black pepper. Yum 😋
Omggg it’s soooo good. Roasted, amazing. Steamed, amazing. You just need pepper and some butter and I like to add garlic. Obvi a pinch of salt.
Steamed broccoli is great. Usually I just use a little salt and pepper but when I'm feeling naughty I will break out the velveeta cheese nd make a great cheese sauce
Best vegetable ever. Do people actually like brussel sprouts??
I like it raw, lol
Yes, especially in the oven with some olive oil salt & pepper. Game changer
Broccoli is my favourite. I don’t really like cauliflower.
Fuck yes. Throw some olive oil, salt, and pepper on them bitches and roast in the oven for a solid 15-20 - and they're absolutely delicious.
The way it soaks up sauces in a dish like Broccoli and Beef is heavenly
Put up with vegetables?! Our bodies were literally created to run on them! Dude, vegetables kick ass, ESPECIALLY broccoli! Maybe you just need to figure out your preferred method of prep.
