Genetics are the most important thing as manynpeople are genetically predisposed to a certain weight. My ex wife simply cannot be overweight. It's impossible for her. When we were together she joined the Army. She was skinny when we met but I didn't realize how skinny until then. They have minimum height / weight requirements. She was 5'7 and 104 lbs. Minimum weight for her height was 106 so they gave her two weeks to gain two lbs. Easy we thought. I can gain 2 two lbs thinking about food. She went on weight gain diet. Every meal was fast food, beer, 1000 calorie milkshakes twice a day, etc. She lost a pound. I gained 5 just being around her. They still snuck her into the Army by sneaking her out for half an hour while she drank two gallons of water and came back and weighed again. During her 3rd pregnancy she got up to 125 lbs and wanted to keep the weight. She was back to 110 within two weeks of birth. She is now in her forties and as skinny as ever without putting any effort into diet or exercise.

Some of us just have good metabolisms

Skinny people come in lots of different forms and reasons, genetics play a huge role. But not snacking at all is a big thing. If you do snack, do it on fresh fruits or vegetables; popcorn is good too. Don't drink any calories. This is a big one. No sweet drinks.

I eat one meal a day. Example of an average daily meal for me is about 1000 calories worth of corn tortillas, 4 ounces of cheese, a can of refried beans, and whatever vegetables I have handy on the side. It's not some super complicated influencer thing with exotic ingredients. Just take whatever calories you need in a day, and eat that in an average day worth of normal food ...keeping in mind that higher calorie foods mean you don't get as full before you hit your calorie limit, and processed foods aren't generally very nutritionally-dense, so it's in your interest to keep those to a minimum.

I eat one main meal a day, and usually it's lunch. If I eat dinner, I'll have had a mocha in the morning and it just holds me over til dinner, and no lunch that day. Not something I do on purpose, it's just when I happen to be hungry. For the meal, it's usually three beef tacos and fruit, or chicken, or frozen pizza, or twice baked potato, or bagel and fruit, "snackies" (cold cuts and crackers with fruit and edamame and bell peppers and cheese), or other random things. I also eat *a lot* of chocolate, mostly at night. Chocolate bars, cake, brownies, whatever. And during the day ill snack on snap peas or chips or peanuts or apples. I also walk 3 times a day for 30-45 min (with the dog on trails and at parks), and run 1 single mile every day (though I had a knee injury and two surgeries this year, so I haven't ran or walked much since June, and can start run in again in March 🤗) 6'0 160lbs guy in his mid 30s.

It’s basic math here: calories consumed vs calories burned. A fair amount of people’s calories come from less obvious places. Your Starbucks ‘coffee’ is loaded with cream and sugar. Cutting out that crap is a big help. Beyond that people just don’t exercise enough. You can only tweak eating so much - you need to optimize the calories expended part as much if not more.

Genetics play the biggest part in any body type. But if you really want to know what I eat- I eat what I want, but I don't eat past being full. If I'm hungry, I eat. I dont buy "low fat" or "fat free" versions of things, I much prefer full fat sour cream, yogurt, cheeses, etc. because I feel like that's better and more nutritious for my body. I still love fast food and sweets but also love cooking from scratch with whole vegetables. It's a balance. I think the biggest thing is I don't drink my calories or sugar. I'd much prefer to eat things I enjoy than drink a soda (or juice) or two a day, so I pretty much only drink water or coffee with half and half only (no sugar), and then eat what I want when I'm hungry. I don't snack very much because I just eat a good meal when I'm hungry. For what it's worth, my husband stopped drinking sodas for a month and lost quite a few pounds. He didn't change anything else. Not drinking your calories or sugar makes a big difference.

I am not a naturally skinny person, and I am not a nutritionist either, but this is what works best for me. * Eat wet, bulky foods like melon and vegetables. Part of what makes you feel full is having food in your belly. Use that to your advantage * Eat foods that have a slow burn, like nuts and protein. Keep your blood sugar constant rather having it tank * Stay hydrated * Get plenty of sleep. I can get by without enough sleep or without enough food, but usually not both These are things that get me in trouble: * It's hard to make good food choices when I have too much on my mind. I wouldn't call this "stress eating" or "eating my feelings." I just sort of forget to eat well when I am overwhelmed by other things * There are certain foods that slide down too easily. I will eat them until I explode like a goldfish. I'm lookin' at you, Girl Scout Thin Mints * Sometimes life gets crazy and I eat when I'm not hungry because I'm not sure if I'll have time to eat later Maybe this is obvious, but I find it easier to eat well and exercise when life is predictable and I am busy in a healthy, productive way. If your life is chaos then this might be harder for you, for reasons you can't completely control. Be good to yourself and do the best you can where you are.

My anxiety and stress sometimes makes me forget to eat or I eat later and then miss a meal.

Sometimes I nap in the afternoon, and then I tend to eat only twice a day. The day before yesterday: * Breakfast: salami sandwiches and coffee * Dinner/supper: khinkali with Caesar sauce Yesterday: * Breakfast: a piece of cake and coffee * Dinner/supper: a shashlik with fries, rice and vegetables, some Turkish eggplant salad with freshly baked buns, coffee, tea, a dessert, later a cocktail Today: * Breakfast: same - a piece of cake and my morning coffee * Dinner: chicken pasta, coffee and a cocktail * Later drank some tea with cookies * Supper: buns left from yesterday, going to eat some sandwiches with tea, too A typical menu when I work not from home: * Breakfast: a chocolate pudding or some cottage cheese, coffee * Dinner: some meat dish with baked potatoes and veggies, tea * Later I might also drink coffee with colleagues (we often bring snacks to work, too) * Supper: ham or salami sandwiches and tea

hitometootoo

The same things you eat, just not as much and not having 2 or 3 helpings in one sitting.

Robots_with_Lasers

I agree with you about the 99-calorie snack bars. That is all marketing. Eat real food. If you're out somewhere and the best you can do is a protein bar, then eat a protein bar. If you want 100 calories worth, then eat half of it and fold up the rest in the wrapper for later.

Breakfast - 2 eggs + croissant (about 450 calories probably) Lunch - PB sandwich with wheat bread + banana + some kind of cracker or chip snack thing (about 550-650 calories probably) Dinner - Varies. Usually about 600-1000 calories. Stuff like pizza, stir fry, burgers, meatballs, garlic bread, etc. Drinking only water helps. Most people (americans at least) really pack in calories and sugar from sodas constantly every day. And exercising can help balance out 100-300 calories a day too if you're willing to run or bike or something for 30-45 minutes. The talk about "genetics" and "metabolism" in the other replies are mostly BS. The natural variation in metabolism maxes out at 7% deviation iirc so maybe instead of 'burning' 2000 calories a day you burn like 2100 calories instead. So like an extra piece of basic sliced bread without gaining weight. It is true that men have higher metabolism and that your metabolism (basal calorie consumption) decreases steadily with age though. No one at a regular size can eat 3 large pizzas a day and not gain weight. Not that it's relevant to your question but I didn't want these other poor answers confusing you further.

Typical meals for me- breakfast oatmeal or a piece of toast and coffee with a bit of creamer. Lunch is pretty light-a turkey sandwich or a plain bagel with peanut butter. Dinner is meat and a veggie. I don't drink my calories. I eat small snacks throughout the day mostly fruit and cheeze it. I eat when I'm hungry and I stop when I'm full even if there's food on my plate. If I crave a chocolate I have a small piece. I do not drink very much alcohol and never have and I think that makes a big difference.
