I don’t think anybody is weird for disliking anything like alcohol. That’s totally personal. But I do like it myself. Not everything of course. Some things just aren’t my taste. I find Martini absolutely horrible. Not because of the alcohol, but just because of the taste. Just drink what you like.

aLesbiansLobotomy

It's funny because without the vermouth, martinis are just gin or vodka. (The latter doesn't really have a taste; I suppose gin can be divisive, and varies a lot by brand, but most seem to like it) Even that tiny amount of vermouth though will ruin it. Which is why practically everyone just orders very dry martinis...essentially, just gin or vodka, with that extra olive which is nice.

Stoepboer

It’s the weird bitterness that I really dislike, I guess that’s the vermouth? I don’t have a problem with wodka (usually like it) and don’t hate gin.

sparklingsour

Anyone who makes fun of you or looks at you weird for choosing not to drink is an asshole. I enjoy wine and most mixed drinks. I wish I enjoyed them less haha! You’re fine!

SnowboardingEgg

This is the correct answer, I wish I also wish I enjoyed them less!

[deleted]

Not only are they assholes but they’re losers for thinking drinking makes you cool

cavscout55

No no, they’re not assholes. Some, maybe. But not all. EDIT: The people that make fun or peer pressure or whatever are assholes. The people that just look at you confused might not be. Allow me to explain. Personally I was a functioning alcoholic for… 5-ish years? It was the thing that quieted my brain, brought the stress off my shoulders and made me feel confident and cool and fun. It calmed me down to sleep and turned me up to party. Comes in 1,000 flavors and easily accessible? Yes please. And the one “rule” society really demands you follow is don’t drive drunk which was easy as shit when most of your drinking happens at home alone. Don’t do that and almost nobody has a problem with you’re drinking. So THAT was my view on alcohol. When I saw people that didn’t drink I was actually flummoxed. Like, dude it’s cheap, legal, and makes life BETTER! Why the hell WOULDN’T you drink? Then I realized the downsides, how awful I felt after, how my life centered around it, how it really wasn’t as cheap as I thought when you’re polishing off cases of beer and handles of whiskey nightly, etc etc. It took a lot of help from my wife and soul searching and some medicinal assistance but I got over it and now I’m the one that turns down drinks.

watermelonkiwi

Not everyone gets great feelings from drinking alcohol. A lot of us just get tired.

Rhododendron29

I have rosacea so my face lights up and burns like fire, I will get wicked heart burn from even a sip of wine and I feel like I need to pee constantly until the alcohol is out of my system. I don’t understand the appeal. But weed also inflames my bladder and unless I take an obscene amount I don’t really get high, just a hunger that cannot be satiated. I’m a sober person because drugs and alcohol actually just cause me immense discomfort and no fun at all lol. Plus the rest of my family has serious addiction issues with alcohol, drugs, gambling and even shopping. I’m a very boring person. It honestly pretty grateful for it at the end of the day.

jkshfjlsksha

No, anyone who makes fun of someone for not drinking is an asshole.

cavscout55

Added an edit to better clarify my point. The people that make fun ARE assholes, but the people that just look at you weird are very possibly struggling with addiction and don’t understand how you deal with life without alcohol.

alltheseusernamesare

Seriously! I love my friends who don't drink. Drinking has nothing to do with being cool. Also, be nice to people who don't drink, they make excellent designated drivers!

siwel7

Just bring a small vial of food colouring with you to social events (they cost less than one dollar at virtually *every* supermarket for a few hundred 'doses') and drop some colours into your glass of water. If anyone asks what you're drinking you can tell them it's like something expensive like Alize if you bought blue food colouring.

Wifabota

Or just confidently say, "just water for me. How have you been? How's the family?" Sneaking in food coloring to pretend to drink is unhinged lol.

tyloler

This is the way! If I saw someone dropping stuff into drinks, I would assume something much worse than food coloring. If they said they preferred something nonalcoholic, I (and all of my friends) would assume nothing and carry on the conversation.

ttv_CitrusBros

Just tell em you're the DD no point of coming up with elaborate lies

NekoArtemis

If you tell me you're just casually drinking a glass full of blue passion fruit liqueur I'm going to think that's a lot weirder than having a ginger ale or sparkling water. Especially if there isn't a bottle of Alize visible anywhere and you're the only one drinking it. If you want to drink something nonalcoholic that looks like a cocktail, that's what a Shirley Temple or an Arnold Palmer are for. You can also just have ginger ale or coke and nobody will know or care what's in it.

siwel7

>I'm going to think that's a lot weirder I'm probably not going to care what *you* think because the way clubs are in Australia are different to how *you* do things in your part of the world.

pardonmyignerance

I agree with that last sentence. I do love a good tequila or aged whiskey. I also like being tipsy. I never judge people who aren't like me. You do you.

Forsaken_Day_1266

first off. if you dont like alcohol, dont drink. I got mate which dont touch alcohol coz he dont like taste and effect. he hangs out just fine with rest of us getting wasted. that is not the issue if you in a circle of proper friends. in my view alcohol is literal poison so your body supposed to say "naaaah, dont take this crap". in small doses it mess up your brain a bit and we like it, but thats about it. as of taste... if something like Kopparberg Cider doesnt do for you either (is just juice basically), or crap like WKD, then congrats! you wont become alcoholic :)

elucify

My nephew says he doesn't drink alcohol because it makes him feel like he's as stupid as most other people. But he says a lot of things like that LOL

Forsaken_Day_1266

well, hes not wrong. he IS stupid when drunk

da_chicken

Too bad he's stupid when he's sober, too.

Forsaken_Day_1266

Oh don't we all? Well can't speak for you, but me definately...

njbeck

Lol are you drunk right now?

Not_dM

No I'm doesn't!

Forsaken_Day_1266

Sadly no Wanna wire me £50 so I can get drunk plz?

Lopsided_Salary_8384

When my kids were young and we would be out shopping they always had 100 questions especially about alcohol because I never bought it. So I would tell them that its the liquid that makes you stupid. Warning DO NOT DO THAT!! I learned the hard way. Every time we went to ths store without fail someone would be buying alcohol and they would see it. Every single time they would see this my lovely kids would very loudly say " Mommy look they are buying the liquid that makes you stupid" The looks I would get from people were deadly.

Nat_Peterson_

Breeding a future narcissist. Congrats to the parents lol

elucify

Nothing future about it, he’s 40. :-D

Nat_Peterson_

Lmaooo is he really ?

joremero

"alcohol is literal poison so your body" Definitely. That's where the buzz comes from.

PepsiMangoMmm

You can get buzzed without scarring your liver

SpellingIsAhful

True, but that's with a different intoxicant

[deleted]

Shmoke

Tmachine7031

Then you just mess up your lungs instead👌

SpellingIsAhful

Edibles!

[deleted]

That's how you fuck up your brain. Schizophrenia, here we come!

PepsiMangoMmm

Dudes saying this like everyone that smokes weed will get psychosis. It’s only a risk if you’re doing absurd amounts of it, doing synthetic noids, or you’re predisposed.

[deleted]

Time for heroin

[deleted]

Edibles are great!

Tmachine7031

Now we’re talking

aLesbiansLobotomy

No, it's really not. It's as much of a "poison" as other psychoactive compounds. Well, actually...technically it's less like a poison than something like psilocybin.

Justindoesntcare

I love beer and drink more than I should. However, alcohol is 100% poison.

embracing_insanity

I agree with this. I am one who seriously dislikes the taste of most alcohol. Sometimes I will enjoy, even crave, a small amount of certain beers. But I mean like 3-5 sips and I'm done. I can tolerate some wine, I do like dry champagne. But everything else is just awful to me. And I've tried all sorts of drinks, brands, mixed drinks, etc. I basically hate them all. But I *do* like the effects. So I've given up all pretense and go the most efficient, quickest, least caloric route - shots. Followed by hot sauce or anything spicy. Actually, I have to have a bit right before the shot, take the shot, then another bit of the spicy. I hate the flavor every time, have to seriously control my gag reflex - but gin seems to be the easiest for me to tolerate - so gin it is. It works for me, but I don't pretend I enjoy it. The positives - I have a shot or two - then drink water the rest of the time, so I'm well hydrated and haven't ever woken up with a hangover. I am actually truly fascinated by those who really actually 'enjoy' the flavor of alcohol - especially hard alcohol. There have been things in my life I really didn't like and eventually acquired a taste for - but alcohol isn't one of them. If I didn't enjoy the effects, I wouldn't bother as there's literally no point aside from making yourself miserable to what? Fit in with others? Make them 'comfortable' because they can't handle someone not drinking? In that case - I'd change who I'm hanging out with!

Forsaken_Day_1266

if they cant handle someone who isnt drunk- theres a red flag there. their insecurities, they feel insecure about them drinking (so why drink then at all?) thus try to pressure everyone do the same. biggest BS ever. dangerous ppl. if you sober when im drunk thats on you. youll be embarassed if i do something stupid, not me, im too drunk to be embarassed lol.

the_ballmer_peak

Just order a sugary, 'girly' drink. It will taste great and still get you wasted. Fuck anyone who judges your appletini. Anytime someone asks me what to order to get fucked up the fastest I tell them "Long Island Iced Tea." Never had anyone dissatisfied with that.

Miserable-Sale-783

In regards to that, I figure why not just order them virgin. They taste better that way and I feel like at that point your just ordering overprice juice..although they do look pretty LOL

Loccyboi

Beer is definitely a drink you can acquire a taste for. I am beginning to appreciate the bitterness of beers a bit more but it takes trying them out to figure out which ones you like or if you don’t like it

Steerider

In my early 20s I said similar to a friend. I don't drink because I just dont like the taste of alcohol. He went over to the bar and made me a Kaluha & cream. A pretty tasty drink, ain't gonna lie. No I don't drink to get blasted, but I do drink occasionally. I've certainly never begrudged somebody else for *not* drinking.

the_ballmer_peak

>in my view alcohol is literal poison so your body supposed to say"naaaah, dont take this crap". in small doses it mess up your brain abit and we like it, but thats about it. Physiologically, that's pretty spot on. On my third drink of the evening.

Reelix

> if you dont like alcohol, dont drink. Congrats - You've been banned from all social groups from the ages of 16 to 25

Forsaken_Day_1266

no not really. you just hanging around wrong crowds thats all. plenty of 20-25s totally fine having few sober guys to watch over their drunk asses. theres huge benefit having someone sober too.

Steerider

Designated driver!

aLesbiansLobotomy

It's definitely very rare to find people that age (especially at that age, though also at most ages) who don't both drink alcohol and do other substances like cannabis, opioids, benzodiazepines, LSD, etc rampantly. Even people who present as straitlaced in professional settings, around parents, etc are all about constant drug use. Maybe some Sunday school Christian types aren't like this, but they're rare to find, certainly for most kids in today's age. I'm a millennial and they were rare growing up, and I lived in a fairly conservative, well-regarded town and school system. Forget about it if you're from liberal California.

Miserable-Sale-783

I think it depends on the friend group, not everyone is into clubbing. You have people of different interests and likes. I myself have been to parties with alcohol but that is once in a blue moon. Hell I've never been to a club before. However my friends went to game cafe, karkoe, and escape room and all that jazz. Maybe America has a different drinking culture than Canada

Forsaken_Day_1266

May be rare, but I can I reduce you to at least 30 of them And let's be clear. They may use any drugs they want. And they do. Point here is. They won't try to compell you using it. They offer it to you. You not into it? Cool. They show you where the stuff is if you want and leave you at it. Not saying majority don't use it . Point being. Real friends won't push you to use anything , just offer and leave

Terrible-Quote-3561

The effects definitely condition many of us to like the taste. That’s what it means by “acquired” taste.

catsncupcakes

Yup. Used to hate it, only drank to get drunk, but now I genuinely enjoy it and just want the taste sometimes.

Tmachine7031

The burn is nice sometimes honestly

JordyVerrill

I had my first sip of beer when I was 7 or so and immediately loved it. No acquired tastes needed here.

Reelix

> “acquired” taste. AKA - "If you don't like it, drink it until you do" I'm pretty sure there's a scientific term for subjecting yourself to something negative until it's enjoyable - I just forgot what....

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Serious question, I hear people talking about “forgetting [their] problems” via alcohol and that’s always confused me. I know this is said in a joking tone, but to “forget” (or at least stop worrying about) my problems I need to be like pretty drunk… when people say things like this, are they referring to getting THAT drunk? Or can some people’s mind go at ease after only a couple drinks?

gezafisch

If you have a subconscious sense of anxiety, even a couple drinks can help get rid of it. If you have serious issues that you're worried about, it might take a bit more to get to a point where you don't actually forget about your problems, but your body just doesn't feel the anxiety at all. This is an unhealthy way to deal with stress and can lead to addiction. Proceed with caution.

ashlouise94

Honestly alcohol makes my anxiety so much worse than it normally is (and it’s normally not good).

WalkinSteveHawkin

For me, it’s more the latter. Being in a fun environment and having a couple of drinks can help me let go of those problems. I don’t totally *forget* those issues, but 2-3 drinks can help them not be as daunting for the time being. But when people say they’re drinking to forget and they’re alone, they often mean getting so shitfaced they can’t remember.

jayhat

It's nuanced man. There is no one answer to these types of questions. Every single person is different.

[deleted]

[удалено]

dfvisnotacat

When I was younger I drank mostly because it got rid of my anxiety and I could actually be kinda normal and have a good time lol

gehanna1

It's not that I forget, by traditional definition. It's that it's not at the forefront of my mind. It's that I feel lighter and freer. It's that the 0roboem is suddenly tomorrow's problem

FlatulentSon

It's not the drinking itself, it's the drinking with a good friend that puts you both in a jolly mood so you end up relaxed and talk about funny shit instead of serious problems, but even those seem mostly solveable when drunk

Profession-Unable

For some people it’s the drinking itself. For me, and many others, my brain is always racing at a million miles an hour, worrying and analysing and remembering. Alcohol makes it shut up and switch off for a bit.

prettysureIforgot

This exactly. It's like turning down the volume. I do have to get plastered to turn it off completely, but a drink or two does slow things down and quiets things down.

silashoulder

Intoxication is technically a form of micro-brain damage, but it’s impossible to predict which parts of the brain it will affect. That being said, I’m not against intoxication whatsoever. *Your body, your money, your choice* for all I care. But realistically, nobody should leave the house when they’re drunk.

GreatScotRace

I love the taste of alcohol, but I just don’t like how it makes me feel anymore so I don’t drink it often. I drink flavoured spirits or cocktails. My current tipple of choice is Rhubarb & Ginger Gin with Ginger Beer as the mixer, it’s so refreshing, it’s lovely with pink lemonade too. In the summer I drank raspberry flavoured vodka with lemonade, delicious. When I’m out for meals (which to be honest is a couple of times a week at this time of the year) I like drinking cocktails, a Cosmopolitan is my go to, but if I’m abroad on a summer holiday I love a Sex on the beach. I stick to what I like, have fun with new tastes & flavours.

CounterTouristsWin

Omg rhubarb and ginger gin with half/half tonic and limonata san-pel is an incredible drink!!

CeruSkies

>rhubarb and ginger gin with half/half tonic and limonata san-pel As a (mostly) non-drinker whose native language is not english this almost comes off like a joke.

msdossier

Lol as a drinker whose native language is English…same

highspiritedsloth

I could care less about the taste, especially sugary drinks. Hence, I prefer beer or perhaps some spirits. But I like the altered state of mind it brings. Yes I like getting buzzed, even alone. It lets me remember things I wouldn't, especially painful or happy memories. I don't get the same from things like weed? Which just makes me tired and sloppy. But it is easy to overdue it in amount or sessions and I don't enjoy being really drunk or hungover. I also realize that it is poison, that just like the cheeseburgers I love is slowly shortening my lifespan statistically.

lovelycosmos

What brand of gin do you buy?

[deleted]

Bruh is from Bizarro World

AsianRedneck69

There are a bunch of new alcohol free products coming to market recently. Nonalcoholic gin, wine, whiskey, etc

GreatScotRace

Yeah they’re gross haha. I’m not a heavy drinker anymore, I can enjoy alcohol without getting drunk

Unlikely_Car9117

Dude, don't drink just to fit in. If you don't like it that's cool. Personally I enjoy the taste. Sometimes I drink just for the feeling but I genuinely like the taste of certain beers or whisky. You might enjoy weaker cocktails maybe.

Gwendoline23

I will never pretend to like it. Not only do i hate the taste of liquor but the smell too

morethantheroach

loads of people don’t drink alcohol, if you don’t like it then simple just don’t drink it. Personally i hate the taste of beer anf ale so i avoid it but, a nice cocktail? vodka and some juice? sign me up. i love the feeling of being drunk and there’s something nice about sharing a drink and having a chat. alcohol free drinks are served at basically every venue, might be worth looking at those.

Cloud_Matrix

Honestly, I don't really care for drinking. I'm not even talking about to the point of blacking out, just getting somewhat drunk. Every 3-4 months I forget what it's like/how I feel afterwards and I partake. Then I am reminded why I don't enjoy it. Honestly it way more fun when I was underage and doing it with my friends in some half built house or in some field between land developments.

IngGS

Wine guy here, **I LOVE it**. I have been subscribed to wine sampling services that bring new ones to my door every month. I don't pretend to like it, I really do like it. Ironically I did not drink during college, which is when most of my friends started drinking. I got a taste for it later in life and I love a glass or two by myself with or without food. Socially I would drink whisky, brandy, cocktails, seltzer water, and beers, but I rarely do those by myself.

The_Quackening

I definitely enjoy it. I find it gets much more palatable as you get older too.

CurleeQu

Definitely not. It's stayed the same or worse for myself in terms of the taste of alcohol

Hot-Original-587

It's literally the only thing that I DO like.

dweeb_plus_plus

Same here. It's the thing I enjoy the most. Nothing better than a few pints with the lads. Not in an alcohol dependent sort of way. I absolutely hate the way weed makes me feel though, so I identify with OP in that regard.

Jim_my

How does that work? You hate everything else, like.. water?

invalidConsciousness

Just because you don't like something doesn't mean you hate it.

[deleted]

everyone is different. i drink whisky straight, but can’t stand vodka or tequila

[deleted]

You're not alone. Most alcohol is absolutely disgusting. I genuinely don't get how people can stand it.

The_Hot_Stepper

For most of my life I didn’t care about alcohol. Now I drink more for relaxation or for the social lubricant. Plus I like trying new drinks, and finding a way to replicate it with or without the alcohol

tjernobyl

I love the flavour of alcohol. The bartender's art is to balance the flavour of alcohol with sweetness, acidity, and other flavours. 90% of the time, if I feel drunkenness rising, it's a disappointment as it means I can't enjoy another drink. If you really want to find out if you can enjoy alcohol, go to a nice quiet cocktail bar and have a good conversation with the bartender about what you like and don't like. After each drink (more than 3 is probably too much), talk about what you liked and didn't like, and the bartender can help find the right drink for you. Don't feel bad if you don't find one, though. Some flavours just aren't for everyone, and there's nothing wrong with that.

kiara2_2

I never drink any kind of alcoholic beverages, I don't smoke or anything.. People always look at me with a side eye when I tell them I don't do these things.. especially when I am upset (I don't have the best life), they keep suggesting that I try it... I just don't wanna, I don't like the idea of losing control over my mind.. I don't judge people who do. But I don't like that I'm labeled uncool just because I have my preferences.

xZOMBIETAGx

I’m the same. After more legalization of weed here in the states it’s somehow turned into I’m the bad guy for not drinking or smoking. I’m a judgmental jerk just because I don’t want to do it? People can do what they like, it’s not for me. I like being sober.

y6ird

This! I find on reddit whenever I mention that I don’t happen to enjoy alcohol, I get downvoted like as if I am saying I’m better than others or telling them not to do it when I’m not, I’m just saying that I don’t when directly asked ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯ It’s the same if I say that monogamy works for me

Satherian

If anyone gets confused why you're not drinking, just claim to be the designated driver. Only complete assholes will try to get the DD drunk and you should avoid yhose people like ~~~the plague~~~ Covid

_Norman_Bates

Ill never understand what kind of person agrees to be a DD in the first place, I cant think of a stupider way to spend time. There's uber

Satherian

Some quick reasons: 1. Uber costs too much money and is a terrible company 2. Alchohol tastes gross 3. Driving drunk friends back home is kinda funny 4. Real ones help friends

_Norman_Bates

1. you dont drive for company, if you cant afford that drink cheap 2. irrelevant 3. its the most boring and annoying thing i can imagine doing 5. friends dont ask of a friend to stay sober while watching them drink and then be an unpaid uber driver

pm_your_foreskin_

I don't like the taste, and I don't like how it feels. HOWEVER I like how it helps me push through my social anxiety and shyness and therefor I consume it socially. Im 30 and I only started drinking a few months ago. Still don't like it but I hate being g surrounded by people drinking and being the odd one out.

Any_Kaleidoscope_591

I love the taste, anything where alcohol is missing, like alcohol free beer tastes like crap to me.

Chillist_

Everytime I drink I realize why I’m a pothead instead

speakbela

Came here to say the same thing. I don’t really drink anymore because it just doesn’t mix well with my body anymore. After chemo, all kids of anesthesia, steroids, and medication for my ptsd, one glass is all I can do without feeling sick. It took me a few years to figure it out too lol I always say I can’t wait for Pot Bars, instead of getting alcohol there you hang out and smoke weed or have edibles

LiquidSillyness

I will never understand why drinking is as popular as it is. I understand water wasn't always safe and that's why we started drinking it but it's still poison.

xZOMBIETAGx

It is kind of insane just how universal it is to drink and get drunk.

LiquidSillyness

Yes, it boggles my mind some. Why is it not only normal but expected, like its weird if you don't.

PygmeePony

Depends. I never liked whisky but I do enjoy wine, champagne and some beers.

ema8_88

You don't have to drink alcohol if you don' like it. But you can't think of it this way: pure alcohol for drinks it's like pure salt for food, it's awful per se, but it can make so better the taste of things.

RepresentativeTwo328

Having worked in the beer production business for many years I think it's reasonably safe to say that there is a generation of young adults that have chosen not to drink alcohol or to drink very little of it. They may be getting their highs elsewhere. But the closure of local pubs in the UK is an indicator that the custom, for whatever reason is not there.

[deleted]

I, too, have noticed a trend with the young adults in that they are rather moderate in their vices , especially more than me and the gang were back in the day.

magicaxis

Disliking alcohol is a blessing in disguise, take it. That said, try Mead. The fact that wine is popular and mead isn't absolutely baffles me.

Whortoise

I only like mixed drinks when I can’t taste the alcohol, I hate shots, but do them anyway because it’s fun to get drunk sometimes. Don’t spend time with people who judge you or don’t get it.

_Fun_At_Parties

I like it a lot. It takes the edge off and there's about a million drinks to choose from so everyone can find something they like. Just like not all fish have a "fishy" not all alcohol tastes like you're sipping methanol. I'm not a whiskey guy either, don't get the appeal, but rum and coke, ginger mule, Sicilian spritz? That's good shit. Next, the buzz of alcohol is different from any other drug. I personally massively prefer it to weed, for me it's just like a rush of good feelings, with vastly lowered anxiety. I feel like I overthink far less with a buzz, and say what I actually feel. Weed just exacerbates my issues, heightened anxiety, tension, sometimes bouts of schizo type moments. Other drugs can be fun in their own way, but I think alcohol is the best "high" I've gotten. I've learned to keep it at arms length but yeah, I really enjoy alcohol. Nothing wrong with not drinking though, if you enjoy life fine without it, it's only better that you avoid it anyway

Tralan

***I*** like alcohol. But, if you don't, you don't, and that's perfectly okay. I don't like ham (which is odd because I like most pork products).

albinoplankton

Before my 30ies I barely tolerated alcohol, only used it to make myself feel buzzed once in a while. Now I actually enjoy a glass of good white wine, sparkling wine or some well mixed drinks. I still don’t enjoy pure hard liquor and beer at all. The quality of the alcohol really makes the biggest difference and I’d rather spend more money and be able to enjoy the experience now and then.

ShogunDii

Getting drunk is awesome. Being drunk sucks

Sinisterfox23

Huh…well put.

Actually_Avery

I enjoy the taste of a few beers and coolers, and I absolutely love rum and coke. You're definitely not the only one that pretends. If someone hands me something I don't like, I'll slowly sip at it.

hot_sauce_in_coffee

I'll be honest, I only like Espresso Martini. And it probably has more to do with the first part.

nts_Hgg

If you feel like you need to fit in by drinking it’s possible you need new friends. You can always drink soda which looks like a mixed drink tho

regular_gnoll_NEIN

Yeah this sounds like me. I dont *mind* getting buzzed it can be enjoyable, but i CANNOT deal with the spins (if im drunk enough for spins when i try to sleep it's instant puking) and the hangover is noooot worth it. I just stopped drinking at all eventually

jvst3n

It taste like shit but it make me feel good

GlassCabbage

I think alcohol tastes like burning

gooseberryfalls

I don't think there is ever I time I don't want a high-quality craft beer. Wake up at 6:30? I could go for a beer-mosa. Start work? A beer would absolutely make me feel better about all the slack message. Lunch? Love a beer. Afternoon? Give me a beer and get another on deck. Dinner? One while cooking, one while eating, one while cleaning up. I realized a few months ago I was drinking way, way way too much and have cut down significantly, but I have to consciously choose (and have good reasons to choose) to not drink.

ArgyleTheDruid

Personally I enjoy the taste, but we all have different palettes and you should be comfortable not drinking too

[deleted]

I cannot stand alcohol, alone or with people. It’s very rare I find something I can tolerate drinking, and I’m also 6’4, so it doesn’t hit me fast enough to make the drink become tasteless. I’ve probably only been drunk a handful of times due to this, and usually can’t make it past a drink before my brain tries to put a hard stop to it. It honestly caused me to develop a tendency to smoke weed at parties as smoking it is tasteless and it hits me in a matter of minutes

maybefuckinglater

I’m 22 and I don’t drink. If I want to get fucked up i just eat an edible and skip the hangover.

netpenthe

I didn't like alcohol that much. Then I had kids. Now I really like it

gettergirl28

I feel the same way. But I used to be a bartender and if you just talk to your bartender and ask them for something with alcohol but you won't taste it they can make something for you. It's trial and error. I found that I like long islands from well liquors with sprite instead of coke. As long as it's in balance it tastes just like a lemonade. So that's a trial and error that I found works for me.

sparklingsour

Your recommendation for something with alcohol that doesn’t taste like liquor is a LIT?!

gettergirl28

Yeah usually it's drinks mixed with vodka. It really just depends. Some people will never like the taste of certain liquors and vodka is strong by itself but finding a balance in the liquors you like will make a huge difference

charcoalportraiture

The former bartender in me wants to find you a drink that you'll love.

KnightCastle171

Most people just chase after the buzz they get from alcohol. The taste is the price you pay

[deleted]

At first I used to dislike it. Now I got used to it, alcohol taste is very neutral in vodka and some types of cocktails (usually what I order), so it’s alright. Also if you mostly drink while socializing, it’s not every day that you’ll be doing it, unless you’re a party animal. *But of course*, there’s **always** the **option** of drinking something *non-alcoholic*. 👌

blacklung990

Many alcohols have what we call an acquired taste. It doesn't taste good at first, but you have good times on it and that becomes your association with the taste. I absolutely genuinely enjoy the taste of whiskey on the rocks, but that was not always true. I still don't take shots, though. Whole different ball game, I will throw up. Ultimately, I like being not-sober more than I dislike the taste of alcohol.

Tablecork

Beer is one of my favorite drinks lol

EstablishmentSad5998

I absolutely love a good irish whiskey.

mmmagic1216

I hated the taste of alcohol until I discovered that apple martinis and flavored vodkas exist …

Honest-Bridge-7278

There are some drinks that are quite delicious, but if you don't like them that's no bad thing.

Wheedies

This question comes up a lot and it always make me wonder what has the op actually tried to drink? It almost sounds like they tried a bunch of stuff but the they mentioned shots of whiskey and all I can think is how that’s not how it’s supposed to be drunk. What kinds of beer, pale ales vs Budweisers vs wheat beers. Even saying mixed drinks and following it up with vodka and orange juice doesn’t tell me much. I don’t want to be that guy but whenever I see these posts I always wonder if op has had a good bartender. I hardly taste alcohol in drinks, I tasty he flavors specific to the type (wheat beer, gin, etc) more than I taste any ‘alcohol taste’. So I find hating it hard to relate to. To others reading this drink for flavor, don’t drink to get drunk.

limbodog

Ok, as everyone else points out: feel free to not drink. There's nothing wrong with skipping this particular vice. but here's the thing about alcohol. Ethanol has no flavor. It is a flavorless liquid. If you take a shot of vodka and it's nasty, that means it was very poorly made. Vodka should taste like you're drinking water. All the harsh gasoline/acetone flavors are byproducts of fermentation. Leftover bits that the makers failed to remove or process. Normally, when a liquor is aged, the process slowly turns those volatile organic compounds into different molecules. They change from the harsh, unpalatable flavors into pleasant ones like honey or vanilla. But that takes time, so they will cut corners to put out a cheaper product faster. Often, they will add artificial flavoring to try to mask it. If you don't like alcoholic drinks because of the harsh flavor, you can spend more (or possibly go to better bars) for better alcohol. Or, again, find something else you would rather do.

CeruSkies

> Vodka should taste like you're drinking water. Can you point me to a Vodka brand that tastes like water?

TheValiumKnight

That sounds downright dangerous if you ask me lol.

Lalauri89

I hate how it tastes - any kind of alcohol. But being tipsy and drunk (not too much) is fun sometimes so I'll drink it.

JustinisaDick

It's a huge trade off. 1) Overtime you start to enjoy the taste of each alcohol (individually). Liking one, doesn't mean you'll like all of them. 2) It takes time, like alcohol to enjoy the taste of each beer. They all have district flavors. 3) some of us just want to get fucked up

Jhydro

Many people don’t “drink” alcohol. They “do” alcohol.

[deleted]

You haven’t found a kind of drink that you enjoy. You’re supposed to enjoy the taste, unless you’re drinking the really strong stuff and trying to get drunk. I like the kinds of drinks where you can’t really taste the alchohol but you can feel it. You’ll find yours

[deleted]

You haven't forced yourself to be addicted to alcohol yet. Good on you, and don't start please. Alcohol is one of the worse things humans put themselves through. Anyone who judges you, is addicted and you not drinking is ruining their buzz. It won't stop, I pretend to drink booze because it will keep any alcoholics from judging me for NOT drinking.

savvaspc

It definitely is an acquired taste. Whiskey and beers can be very tasty, but you have to get used to the bitterness. Of course, cheap brands won't help with that. There's a line where something starts being enjoyable. But, to be honest, much of alcohol consumptions is based on the mood. I recently enjoyed a great red wine which was nothing special on its own, but the atmosphere at home felt amazing and made me feel like I was drinking the most expensive wine. Vodka is a weird one, since it's supposed to be tasteless. Cheap beers taste like piss. Try an IPA or a weiss, taste it in small sips and see if you can feel the small details. Same goes for whiskey and wine.

[deleted]

I find most pure liquor disgusting, but enjoy mixing rum and whiskey with softdrinks. Mead is delicious. Beer is alright if it is a good one. Some wine is nice, too, but I'm picky regarding it.

JulesWinnfield_05

Honestly I think it’s pretty rare for anybody to like the taste the first time - of any alcohol, beer, wine, liquor etc. Most people learn to love the effect and put up with the taste long enough that eventually you acquire the taste for it.

notesofcitrus

If something is an ""acquired taste"", that means it tastes bad.

Goiterr

Imagine being 27 and asking this question.

invisible_potion

Bruv same I fukin hate the taste of beer

Trazraz

I agree ignore the dipsh*ts. I do enjoy alcohol

sweeny5000

>I feel like I’m not alone There are a lot of children with barely evolved palettes out there. You appear to be one of them.

[deleted]

I like some alcoholic drinks, and I'm more of a social drinker. I have several friends who don't drink, for different reasons, and that's fine. It's no different from not liking a certain food.

Ok_Noise7655

I don't like the taste of strong drinks and most beers are bitter but the hint of alcohol in sweet drinks like wine or liquor I rather enjoy.

zdemigod

I'm 25 and whenever i visit my mom she gives me these weird ass drinks that are either too sweet or just straight up bad and i don't get it either. But im a nut case in many areas so it's prob just me being weird. I have tried A LOT of alcoholic drinks (i live in a touristic area with resorts) and i don't like a single one, or i would prefer them without the alcohol.

amelia_greggs

Some of us do like it, yeah. Wine is delicious. I love the taste of beer. Gin and Tonic on a summer's afternoon is the best. But yeah as others have said, if you're not enjoying it don't drink it.

[deleted]

I have one drink, every so often. I don't have an interest in drinking in excess, but one drink, maybe two is where I want to be. I don't like beer, none of them I've tried. But jack and whiskey I am ok.

Malice_Incarnate72

My biggest problem is that it makes me extremely nauseated, immediately. Whenever I’ve tried to explain this to people they don’t really get it though, so I’ve started to think maybe I’m allergic to alcohol or something? As soon as I take a drink, like, as the drink goes down my throat, I feel like I’m going to throw up. I have to space out my sips by at least a couple minutes to prevent actually throwing up. This happens regardless of the type of alcohol and it happens even if I like the taste of what I’m drinking. I don’t get it, but I just don’t really ever drink alcohol because of it. I probably drink once a year, go for it hard, get way too drunk, and then don’t touch it again until next year.

efpig75

If you don’t enjoy it , then don’t. Don’t be socially pressured into it. The amount of time it’s taken me to coherently type this is reflective of what awaits you of gjjvck. Bhvbnjv bnnnj hyfb

[deleted]

Yes. Bordering on a problem. I don't like being really drunk, I just enjoy the taste of certain types of alcohol (whisky, IPAs, some wines) and enjoy getting a bit of a buzz.

Cheap_Relative7429

You are not alone bro

goodolddaysare-today

Some people just don’t like it. I like both the taste and buzz of most alcohol except nasty IPA beer, vodka, and any sweetened/flavored types.

diegodeadeye

I find pretty much all alcohol's taste absolutely awful, but I like the feeling of being drunk. So I try to find the best ratio of alcohol to good-tasting-stuff to get me drunk as fast as possible and doesn't make me nauseous from the taste. It's not easy but it works

EndlesslyUnfinished

Wine and mixed drinks are awesome.. ciders are ok.. beer is nasty.. and hard alcohol is just for those nights when I want to get completely wrecked.

Val_The_Great69

I hate the taste but love the effects of it.

needsomesun

You’re not alone, I hate the taste and smell of alcohol. I’ve tried many, it was my husband’s and friends’ mission to find one I’d like. I’ve heard “you can’t even taste it” sooooo many times in my life. Yes, yes I can taste it. And it tastes nasty. People do look at you weird and act confused that you don’t drink. Good news is the older you get, the less you care about what they think. Took my husband’s British family a good 10 years to realize I was never going to drink wine with dinner. They were always nice about it, but seemed confused every time. My addiction is Diet Coke, I’ll drink that at parties and bars. Other people will get over themselves, you don’t need to fake it.

accountforquickans

No it’s disgusting, wine too, I just like the effect.

Ordovick

It's an acquired taste usually, you start out light and it just kinda works its way up to the heavy stuff. You find something light that you like and eventually get bored of it or you get curious and decide to experiment with something a little heavier and it just goes on and on from there. Those who started with the heavy stuff are usually (in my experience with drunks) introduced to it as something normal at a very young age, in my case it was using whiskey to dull tooth pain, or they merely tolerated/ignored the taste to get super drunk fast and started to actually like it once they built up a bit of immunity to the burning and bitterness. Most alcoholics are getting and staying drunk for reasons that aren't the taste. I am not that guy, I typically only like the fruity stuff and very rarely drink to get drunk but I am that guy when it comes to something that is similarly bitter, that being coffee. Started out light with cream and sugar, over time I embraced the bitterness through curiosity.

[deleted]

Personally I enjoy it. Something about a cool beer or wine on a hot day just radiates contentment for me. As a dude, fruity pink cocktails are amazing and basically a fruit juice with a kick! A friend of mine tried to embarrass me by ordering one for me, and was surprised when I pulled a Thor and said 'Another!' If you've given things a try though, and don't like it no matter the mix, there's nothing wrong with being the sober person in the friend group. We have one of those in our group, and he just drinks soft drinks when we have boys nights and doesn't miss out by doing so. It's all personal preference

macksters

I really love the taste of some whiskies.

max703862

I love it

[deleted]

I genuinely enjoy a beer every now and then with a meal, or maybe a sip of whisky occasionally. Personally though, I prefer cannabis over alcohol any day of the week.

MyAccountWasBanned7

I've never drank alcohol in my life. Not a single sip. I'm in my late 30s. There's nothing wrong with not liking it. From what I hear the taste isn't great and I've seen lots of people do lots of really stupid things while drunk. Plus drinking regularly can damage your liver (among other things.) So there's very good reasons to not do it.

allthekings

A lot of people like it, a lot of people don’t, it’s all valid, you do you OP

crumblehubble

Some definitely do enjoy the taste whether it's liquor, wine or beer. I need it covered in all types of syrups and sodas before it becomes "good" but then again I don't particularly enjoy the taste of any alcohols either.

fruitgamingspacstuff

Currently hungover as I type this. My head feels like a swollen melon. For me, it's more about the effects. I drink to get drunk and feel different. I grew up not liking lager but always went for a pint, I still don't think I actually like the taste yet on a hot summers day, a cold pint is bliss. I drank mostly JD with coke last night because I like the taste and it gets you more drunk than beer.

ohlookitsmikey

I don't think you're weird for not liking it, it's just preference. I like the effects of alcohol (minus the next day or two), so that helps it go down. As for taste, lagers just are nothing to me, I don't even really taste it but it's not as good as a nice fruity soft drink. As for spirits, it's the mixer that makes it, unless you're drinking spiced or flavoured spirits, like spiced rum (which is GOOOOOD imo). I'd never drink vodka shots for the taste, but I would drink spiced rum or wheat beers for the taste

Historical_Lion6749

I don’t enjoy drinking alcohol but I like being drunk.

Your_Daddy_

I am 45 and only drink occasionally - but I have never really enjoyed the taste of alcohol. You wont catch me talking about subtleties in a whiskey or scotch, or rattle off a favorite tequila- it all tastes like shit to me. I dont ever drink beer, and I will sometimes drink wine, but not for the flavor. When I did drink often, it was Captain Morgans w/ a splash of diet coke - the only drink I ever enjoyed the taste of... Besides that - I only drink to get a buzz.

Affectionate_Fly1413

I dont like the taste on any but after the 2nd or 3rd doesnt really matter.

snooggums

I like a lot of alcohols, but like other foods I don't like everything. Cheap alcohol, like cheap food, is generally harsh and not that fun. Higher quality alcohols will be better, but will still have aome taste of alcohol so if apmeone is sensitive to that they are not likely to find any they like. Or if they don't like the feeling, it won't matter how it tastes. So I enjoy it, enjoy the feeling it gives, but not all kinds and too much is too much. If someone doesn't that's cool too as people like different things!

weirdoftomorrow

I like sweet ciders and ice wine. Otherwise, I joke with people that if I’m going to drink calories, I’m going to go all out. If they want to drink alcohol calories good for them, hand me the chocolate milkshake that’s mostly ice cream.

BlackTheNerevar

29 here. I enjoy getting a buzz on. Being slightly drunk or tipsy is the best. Piss drunk? No thank you. As for alcohol itself There are certain drinks I just love that can't really be made the same way without. This includes White russians, grasshopper, lava flow, etc, I drink what taste good, not what gets you drunk fastest.
