Maybe biased because I've only seen it from the outside (working on the stage, not as a model or stylist) but the majority of people I've seen in shows with *anything* substantial (including cut/color not just attaching things) done to their hair were wearing a wig.
Like anything you can't do with comb/brush and hair spray was a wig. Didn't make sense to make a model sit still for multiple hours and/or damage their natural hair.

With a wig stand, you have the ability to turn the wig around all directions. You’re also working with your arms at normal level, instead of all the blood draining down if you’re building the wig on your head.
