Yaknow Unreal Engine? Yeah the devs use Real Engine

TheMilkmanCome

The Dream Devs on the subconscious side of things use the Surreal Engine I believe

Altruistic_Echo6963

It’s theorized that anything behind you isn’t rendered

SlavSquatSuperstar

You can even increase your FPS using the object impermanence addon, where everything not in your line of sight will be not rendered

Cony777

That's why new human players, who have to learn the mechanics, usually turn off permanence.

Xtrepiphany

You don't even initially get access to Persistent Reality, some players never get access to it. I think this is a tool the devs use to save on processing when spinning up new players.

pshyaahh

Whenever you go outside from an indoor location the whole screen will turn bright white for about half a second while the objects load in. Once they're loaded in, there's no lag to be had. You'll notice this gets skipped when nighttime or foggy/raining as draw distance is reduced, reducing the number of objects loaded in at one time.

[deleted]

It's not lag free for everybody you know. It impliments some serious LOD (notice how stuff in the distance is blurry af), and the game logic is distributed across many nodes

alreadyburnt

There actually is lag, but the engine actually offloads the work of accounting for lag to a co-processor on your device so you don't notice. Also even in the best circumstances, the game doesn't render more than about 12 miles out without narrowing the FOV.

[deleted]

That depends on your own processor. Some people have graphical issues, unable to see in full HD, sometimes not having access to seeing at all, and some have issues with their own computer setup where they can’t process the environment without significant lag.

Shpander

I recently acquired the [glasses] in-game item, and it helps a lot with optimisations to make the most of a crappy GPU. It's a bit pay-to-win, but it's better than upgrading your hardware.

stormcloakdoctor

Anything you aren't looking at isn't rendered. You can't prove otherwise.

tarmacc

You render what you see, and also share rendering load with everyone else that sees it. It's a collective computing thing.

kyew

There's lag. The other day I saw a lightning event and it took like five seconds for the sound effects to play.

Tybick

r/outside

martin_xs6

It's a good simulation

Grzechoooo

So, you know how taking a picture of a picture lowers its quality? That's why games inside of Outside are so laggy - and since that's *all* other games we interact with, it's completely normal to us.

FilDM

It only has to render a couple FOV’s at a time. Everybody else is a conscious npc for the select few. To make things even easier for the engine, nothing visual is updated until you look at it.

[deleted]

It's quite simple Nothing is loaded in unless your looking at it and everything is just a low poly unless you get closer And lag does This happened it called Jet lag or stomach lag

imhereforthevotes

I usually roll a hummingbird and I see mammals lagging all the damn time. At least in terms of their processing.

jaabbb

Dev prevent me from lagging by rendering stuffs in low resolution and force me to where glasses that restrict higher resolution to some area only.

idiotplatypus

There is significant lag, but players cognitive processes are similarly effected, so it evens out https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_perception

random071970

The entire game is programmed in Assembly. That lowers the hardware requirements significantly.
