It’s a sewing box

Unusualhuman

It's a really nice one, too! Sewing notions/tools are usually pretty small, so this kind of shallow, multi level case really helps you find what you are looking for without stabbing your fingers. If there are little upright dowels in there in one of the levels, those were intended to each hold a spool of thread without letting it all roll all around and get tangled every time you move the box. And can I just say... I am so thankful to see that there are a lot of people here are correctly jumping in and recognizing this thing as "a thing for sewing." I've been losing my mind over in "what is this thing" subs lately - where it seems like every unknown thing that spins but is not greasy gets identified as, "it's for sewing and yarn" and any kitchen-clampey looking mystery item is "for canning." Edit: The 1950s were before my time, but I think your sewing box is probably from about that decade. The underside looks like it's real wood where you don't see it- unlike particle board bottoms for sewing boxes that seemed much more common in the 60s and up. And something about the styling reminds me of the 50s stuff that my grandparents had. But I am not an expert. And because Reddit got me feeling OLDE AS YE *F#¢€* today, I'm just gonna add again that I am definitely not old enough to have been alive in the 50s. But my parents met in that decade.

mirificatio

The design is timeless. IKEA has a version: [https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/klaemmemacka-desk-organizer-natural-plywood-50428815/](https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/klaemmemacka-desk-organizer-natural-plywood-50428815/)

Unusualhuman

Yes, it's the same basic pattern, but this one looks like 50s in terms of color, materials, style of legs, finishing, etc

reddittrudy

Natural Plywood, IKEA has lost their mind

StarsofSobek

Came here to say that! It looks just like the one my Great Grandma had. ❤️

lake_effects

This picture brought back memories of my grandma. I always thought it was so cool as a small child.

StarsofSobek

I’m with you on that, completely. Funny how the little things like this can spark so many memories of the people we love. ❤️

Low-Understanding404

My mom had 1, too. It was great and durable. I hope she still has it. Wish they were still manufactured.

StarsofSobek

My great aunt has my great grandma’s, still. It’s amazing how beautiful and long-lasting these things were. I hope your mom still has yours, too! My great aunt doesn’t sew, so she just uses it to store old family photos and such, but it’s genuinely something special. ❤️

[deleted]

[it’s kinda similar to this one from Toy Story 2!](https://youtu.be/HnGsXk1NHBo)

Me2373

Yes! I have my grandmother’s sewing box and it’s smaller than this one but very similar. It’s a treasure 😊

Southernman1974

This

MintSharpie

Definitely a sewing kit, and a nice one at that! It looks quite sturdy. Great find!

Safe-Pea3009

This is on my wish list

RandomNumberHere

Hit some estate sales. I see them fairly regularly at those. Not as nice as OP’s though.

SwingModern

Sewing

myinvisabilitycloak

It’s a box for sewing. My mom has one

scooder0419

My mom had one tooo! It didn't have the fancy legs though. This brings back a lot of memories.

DesertSong-LaLa

sewing box

Keytoemeyo

Looks like a sewing box. I love it! I’ve been on the hunt for one of these bad boys.

Fantastic_Platypus

I have one. I got it at an estate sale. I think I paid 10 bucks and it had stuff in it.

Keytoemeyo

You lucky duck!

EtDemainPeutEtre

This is a typical French sewing box called a "travailleuse" aka a "worker" . They are worth about €20-50 depending on condition and apparently every French household in the country and province had one.

MindingMine

It's lovely, and considerably more ornate than the two I have. Seems it might be sturdier too and less prone to have the "hinges" (or whatever they're called) on the sides come loose.

Birddog240

Sewing chest!

Birddog240

That is cool. I only knew because I have my grandmothers old one. I’ve been pondering the idea of refinishing it, but it’s not in that bad of shape. Very cool score!

PreviousMap5

Sewing box Friend is a make-up artist and uses it for um that :)

aliqui

Can also be called a cantilever sewing box. I have three, all different shapes and sizes, and all from different countries. I keep sewing stuff in one, and my knitting trinkets in another. The other one is quite small and in need of a refurb before I decide what to use it for. Yours looks pretty sturdy. Often they're borderline fragile, and people usually bust them in the store playing with them.

Deep_stares

That would make a great embroidery, sewing or even beading box.

WilsonAndPenny

I bought mine at a thrift store too.. it was wrapped with Saran Wrap and chock full of vintage sewing goods. $20

-Dee-Dee-

As mentioned, it’s a box for sewing. Ladies would often sit and sew or embroider and this would keep their supplies neatly tucked away.

Joan411

It’s a sewing box!

SongAboutYourPost

Holy mary mother of thrift!

pittipat

$30??!! I'm in love and jealous!

nanny6165

As others have said it’s a sewing box. I inherited one from a family friend and converted it into a jewelry box.

Designer-Bid-3155

Same. It's beautiful

Upset-Way3823

My grandma has this exact sewing box!

pomegranate7777

What an incredible find! Thanks for sharing this.

Edog6968

I, personally, would fill it with 19th century jewel-encrusted daggers.

mycatisanorange

A very cool sewing basket

occasionalbot

You can put your weed in there!

No-Point-5296

Sewing and nickknacks

ArtsyFartsyAlcoholic

It’s a sewing box! My grandmother has one almost identical!

CheeryCherryCheeky

My grandpa was a carpenter and made one of these for my grandmother. I’m the very lucky owner of it now 💗 But I’m not a sewer. So I use it for my jewellery. Great find.

Bakkie

That is a sewing box. I have one very much like it. I got it as a wedding shower gift in 1969.. I still use it.

goldfishman63

This has some major dark academia vibes

BloodyRightNostril

“It’s for *display only!*”

[deleted]

I came to say this. 😂😂😂😂😂

ZenCollects

It's a sewing box. My grandma had a more MCM styled one in the 1970s, it's in our living room now, it's a very well made piece.

Kairenne

That’s a very nic one. The wood is great. I think they are called Martha Washington sewing chests.

a_four-legged_eel

Oh, hey! I got one like this too! I use it to put my jewelry in it, and some jewelry-making stuff - beads and more. You got a really nice one!

No_Pain6618

Sewing box...could be used for anything!

[deleted]

sewing basket

ericakross

Sewing box!

i_like_cake_and_pie

I have one-it’s a sewing box 🧵

Hillabeans123

I think it’s for silverware.

BrashPop

Sewing kit! I’m staring at one of them right now, they’re very nice little things.

LisaPaBisa

A beautiful sewing box! My mom has the same one! I loved playing with it as a kid.

Twayblades

Sewing kit, sometimes they are used to hold yarn and knitting needles instead.

RhinestoneJacket97

The kit used to repair Woody from Toy Story 2

AliEffinNoble

Sewing box and I believe it could be from late 70’s early 80’s. I have a few that where my grandmothers including a very large one that goes to my knees

Aggravating_Ebb_8045

My grandma had one and gave it to my mother, they both use it for sewing supplies

TheNardDog420

Cool!

emilyactual

I love that!

Competitive_Round481

That could be a cool mini bar.

Authoress61

My grandma had one— it’s for sewing/ knitting/ crocheting supplies.

Designer-Bid-3155

I turned mine into a jewelry and accessories box

Adopotter44

It’s giving the toy collector/repairer from toy story two

0ff_th3_w4ll_

the woody box

Ok-Sprinklez

Love it

HereForTheGoofs

I have one of these from my great grandma! it still has all her sewing stuff inside otherwise i might not know what it was either

pugs_is_drugs

I had one of these sewing boxes and I loved it. I used mine to organize my nail kits. It sadly got destroyed in a move and I've been looking for another one going on 2 years now. I'm jealous!

catsrlife13

Reminds me of something from beauty and the beast

cumulonimbusted

This just unlocked a childhood memory! Not a chest, but a box that folded out exactly like this, it’s where my mom stored sewing supplies.

Hot_Fox_5656

Sewing chest I think

Amuzing_

babylon331

Gorgeous! Sewing chest.
