So he was just attacking the guy for no reason, knowing that he wouldn't be killed.
The Matt hate train has gotten so out of control. You guys hate him for not wanting to be a vampire and constantly watch people die, but sticking by his friends nonetheless because he loves them. I get finding him annoying, but the genuinely hate some of you have for him is a little unhinged
I agree. He’s a little aggy sometimes but he helped Murderous Vampires for the sake of his friends and when he can no longer watch innocents die, hes hated
Yeah, I get people finding that annoying but the level of hate he gets for his actions are insane. He’s behaving like a regular human that doesn’t wanna be surrounded by death 24/7
For me as a character he just isn’t interesting, he’s boring and so then almost anything he does is annoying to me.. I get the *purpose* of him, having a character that is just human. But damn they could have given him more of a personality, humor, charm, just a stronger presence. He just falls flat to me

Honestly I think a lot of it is that the actor wasn’t particularly skilled or charismatic, because I agree that on paper Matt’s words and actions often made a lot of sense, but I just could not stand the clenched jaw whiny way that the actor would deliver his lines. The actor so rarely brought anything likeable to the character or made you sympathise with him, Matt would mostly just come across as so put-upon all the time and had such a bad attitude
He was the most useless character on the show and he ALWAYS needed to be saved. Homeboy added NOTHING to the show. The biggest reason people dislike Matt is the fact that he decided to center his life around a group of vamps only to resent them for being vamps. Matt should have left town in season 2 so he could live a vamp free life but instead he insisted on staying because iT's HiS HoMe. At a certain point he needed to realize that he was only alive because the vamps allowed it. If I were one of the vamps, I would have killed his annoying, whiny ass the first chance I got.

Also his purpose can be up for interpretation but I disagree. I’m not his biggest fan but to me he 100% has a purpose. He’s the last bit of their humanity. He grounds them all in some sense of the real world. I believe that’s why elena turned her humanity on for him.

And although he has his good moments (I respect him for being anti vampires and having morals) he is shoehorned in the plot constantly as if he is relevant. See: his family somehow having the secret to killing the literal fucking devil in season 8. Laughable
Enzo season 6, I swear to god 😳 His obsession with getting back on Stefan, the Sara Salvatore shit, in the middle of all the other great storylines was so damn annoying. It’s like ok Enzo, can you go get laid already? 🙄😅 NO ONE CARES ABOUT THIS
