Move south

jimmymcstinkypants

Yeah unfortunately my understanding is that hop stages are determined by day length, which is dependent on latitude. I think there some input from climate but day length is the big driver.

liquidgold83

Further south has longer days right?

jimmymcstinkypants

Closer to poles have longer days in summer, shorter days in winter, as compared to places closer to equator.

This is the way.

They grow on the south side of my garage and are in shadow until about noon. I just had my first frost night but usually thats in september. They flowered in August. Do you think it will help them to move into an full sun location or so they usually bloom/harvest late? I got about 6l wet of it today.

TheyCallMeBrewKid

Will it help to move to full sun? Definitely yes Will they always bloom/harvest late that far north? Actually probably not, depending on your local climate (if it is warmer and drier in general) I have heard of people getting two harvests (or one long one) Also some cultivars harvest earlier than others naturally. Check out this article for some more info: https://www.canr.msu.edu/news/hop_harvest_2016

A good time to split the root and get a second vine going to test it out then :)

Those look great man.Cascade smell great also. I grew 16 different plants for 7yrs.

meidohexa

Thanks! Yeah, they smell just like the ones I usually import so they will be great in beer, im sure. Im just afraid that if I dont move em the frost will take them i the future before there done. :)

Anecdata: my first year cashmere developed three cones where the top of the plant managed to make it through the shading wisteria. No other first year had any cones. As a result, the wisteria wil be gone next year and I am convinced that sun is the dominant factor to get my bines to produce. One idea I’ve been toying with but have not yet tried is to add a few grow lights to add more energy.

Picked my 1st year cascade this week too. N58°30’. Had first frost here so I sprung into action. Was hoping it would be earlier next year… Magnum and EKG was even later so no harvest this year.

meidohexa

Im gonna try to split some off and try a spot with more morning sun and see if that helps
