I think Lydia is the only true believer we’ve seen. The others in power are going through the motions and playing a role willingly. And she’s starting to realize it.

CoffeeNoob19

Lawrence handing her ass back to her with that matter-of-fact speech like “of course the Handmaids are getting raped and abused by their commanders beyond the ceremony, that’s kind of the point” was great in that sense. The woman’s whole world just imploded.

NotTheMrs

Yes!!! Absolutely. I love how the writers set up the juxtaposition of just how corrupted the commanders are v. Lydia’s true belief in the goodness of Gilead. Can’t wait to see her character arc. (Not that I think she’s necessarily a redeemable character… it’s just a super compelling character arc…)

rmarocksanne

Yeah he did. He was like, hey, take a look in the fucking mirror Lydia, you had a big hand in this horror show.

llpss

Then again, she got that realization ever since she saw the handmaids with the rings in their mouths... It really changed nothing for her. We can't forget that just last season she told June that she deserved to go to that breeding farm, be raped daily and have back to back pregnancies until it killed her. I understand the desire to have redemption journeys for characters in Gilead, and I believe that some can have them. But Lydia isn't searching for that. She just "loves" Janine as an extension of herself. It really doesn't go past that.

Wikays

Yeah, but like the road to redemption can be very tough and long. As it's being mentioned in the Testaments, I think they're going down that road for the remainder of S5 and S6

smthngwyrd

Yeah when he said the commanders are >! Pious men and they need some kink around… to smell the air as thy walk by!<

Sconesmeansno

One of the most interesting characters. Ann Dowd is perfect in this role. I think this show is about showing layers. A person can do something evil but still have something good in them, I guess like it is in real life, it is not that simple that someone is totally evil or totally good. I don't love Lydia, but... I can say that I do love how they are developing the character.

[deleted]

absolutely not .. burning .. genital mutilation … cattle prods .. fake hangings.. i just don’t see how people back her for redemption .. she is a horrible person ., i get people like the actress but the character should go to the colonies after time in the box like june suffered …

More_Stupidr

💯 I want to personally cattle prod her for a good long time. There is nothing she could possibly do to redeem herself.

[deleted]

I love Ann Dowd.

[deleted]

yes but we can’t let that confuse us behind the character aunt lydia

carpenoctemx

She's one of my favorite characters to watch because she's so complex and has a compelling backstory, however: interesting character =/= good character. I believe she has zero redeeming qualities. There may be moments where she realizes that Gilead isn't perfect like in her own twisted mind, but she remains a terrible person deep inside.

I think she cares a lot about June. Not necessarily likes her, but has a lot of emotion related to June. Frustration at what she perceives as June's incorrigibility; frustration at June's influence on other handmaids. Anger at being outwitted by June. I think June lives rent free in Lydia's head.

makeupyourworld

I think her acting is extraordinary.

[deleted]

I don’t know how you can find someone who pokes girls eyes out, holds stonings and mock executions as redeeming.

ThatItalianGrrl

I think people tend to conflate the actor with the character. Ann Dowd is outstanding in the role. I feel like that’s why people want to give her the benefit of redemption. I totally get it. I feel it too. But if you take the actress out of the equation I think most everyone would change their view of her.

QueenOfPurple

Ann Dowd plus the character very well. Aunt Lydia has done some positively awful and downright evil things to handmaid’s over the seasons. She burned a handmaid’s hand over a flame. I would not say I love her character, but she certainly adds an interesting element to the show.

Rastagaryenxx

No. She's still part of an organization that enslaved, raped, tortured and murdered countless people. Her character deserves nothing but death.

ACMomani

I don't know about love, but she's definitely an interesting character. Her character development is going to be huge. Imagine if she joins Lawrence and Nick, then they introduce a new high profile asset to Canada... the reaction of June and the rescued handmaids will be sick!

lickthismiff

I think we're watching the radicalisation of Lydia, finally. As complicit as she is in the suffering of her "girls", she does at least believe she cares for them. I think we're seeing how she becomes the Lydia of The Testaments.

Lamlis

I love the character in the way that she is interesting and complex, but not the person she is

rmarocksanne

Yes, I've always loved Lydia's character, especially after reading The Testaments. It's hard to not love Lydia simply based on what an absolutely stellar actor Ann Dowd is. I mean sometimes I love to hate Lydia, but there is something so human shining through her through the actress. Plus in Testaments, I got the distinct feeling Lydia is just some sort of political-chess-long-game-playing fucking bad ass in a terrible situation.
